You hit the nail on the head about O'Neil. He tormented and killed characters left and right but it always felt shallow. Just shock value over substance. I completely gave up on him after reading the original Nightwing mini series from '94.
Some of the post-Miller issues seemed to be veiled critiques of his handling of DD. In 192, Kingpin calls him out for using Vanessa as a bargaining chip (and that, "she's alive, I have her" was a lot of heavy lifting). After Heather's self-deletion, he chews himself out for not recognizing the break-up note was forged. All these takes are valid. What makes DD so interesting is that he'll do morally questionable things without turning into a homicidal vigilante.
I know ya going to cover "Born Again", but please please PLEASE do not sleep on the Ann Nocenti run on DD! She was the best writer to take over from Miller. Her run is very underrated.
O'Neil's best work at Marvel is his Iron Man run. Like with DD, O'Neil was following up on a character defining run for Iron Man (The 1st Layton/Michelinie run) but unlike with DD, his Iron Man run is arguably better then the legendary run he was following up. Before Miller popularized the super hero deconstruction with Born Again, O'Neil pioneered it with his Iron Man run and he did it for almost the entire run, unlike born again which was just a story arc.
I think this run is a great follow up to the Miller run with the big exception to any issue that had Micah Synn in it. I just find the stuff with him boring with how he just talks. I tend to skip his stuff and get to the Matt drama in my rereads. Despite that one personal issue, it's a good read for me. Although honestly, I feel like The Last Rite stuff and Tyhoid Mary stuff that comes after this run is even better.
my fave was the run when he was in Acts of Vengeance fighting Ultron. It's a rather improbable fight and quite sad. Anne Nocenti wrote #275-276 and further on -- lots of the first appearances of great new villains like Typhoid Mary.
This stuff, all of 90s Daredevil late 80s Spider-Man and 90s Spider-Man and Ghost Rider: Danny Ketch were some of the best Marvel books ever. Everyone loves the X-Men of those time periods but the other stuff was a lot more consistent and better.
Sorry how the hell are we skipping over HARLAN ELLISON?!?!? The Writer of the amazing, I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream? seriously, that's an absolutely amazing fact and we just got like 2 sentences on it. wtf mannn
I honestly just didn't realise it was him. I was more focused on the main crew and didn't bother looking up Ellison. I would've talked about it more had I realised the creator of AM wrote the story about exploding child robots.
@@FinnSutoThe2nd I wonder if any other really weird writers has ever worked on a title like this. Maybe Douglas Adams on Martian manhunter or something random like that??? I can't wait til you get to Nocenti and JRJR btw
Very good analysis of comics I could not bring myself to read at the time. I did get pulled back by that great Vulture story and the western tale. And then the M/M team was better than the sum of its parts absolutely. O'Neil was someone who's overall influence was very positive but was not a big star for most of a long career. Good tribute.
I don't like Janson as a penciller. Mazzachelli was an improvement over Johnson, and once he started inking himself, Daredevil went back to being one of my favorite titles. I especially liked the fog and Vulture issues. I think I only read the last issues of the Micah Synn story. I remember loving the final fight in the rain, and my roommate and I loved chuckling over the "Your ice cream, Micah Synn" scene.
#200 was horrible. A year and a half after being crippled, Bullseye gets Adamantium bones, yet gets taken down even easier! And Micah Synn overpowering Daredevil? I was ready to dump this book except Mazzuchelli's art got better and better each issue, then Born Again. Great episode.
random but really like your thumbnail style, espeically when it pops with a vibrant background colour and the old comic art.
Agreed
This was a REEALLY underlooked run. O’Nell wrote as well as he did his classic Batman stories in the 1970’s.
You need to read and make a video on the Ann Nocenti run. Super Cray take on Daredevil.
Her Spider-man comics are wild too.
Yes. I grew up on that run, and LOVED it! Born Again feels like the LAST and final Daredevil story, though!
For me, the single greatest issue is Daredevil: Roulette, Issue 191, Miller's last issue.
I finished Millers run a couple weeks ago and am now half way through Bendis. Man, I love Daredevil.

I remember Daredevil being one of my favorite books throughout the 80s.. the Frank Miller run got me hooked on it..

The Micah Synn storyline seems like a rough prototype for the Bane/Knightfall storyline that O’Neil would oversee as an editor.
it's not.

That's a crazy writing career

Haven’t read the limbo between 191 and 226, but what comes next (Born Again and Ann Nocenti’s run) are peak Daredevil
