Speaking of good Kraven stories, the 90s animated show had a cool depiction of him. When Spidey was going through accelerated mutation that turned him into a giant 6-armed Spider, Kraven's girlfriend pleaded with him to track down Spidey and give him the cure she developed. Oh, and Punisher was there. A-hole.

On thing that few people seem to bring up about Kraven's Last Hunt is how Kraven stayed dead for a good long while. Yeah you had attempts with his kids and such but Kraven himself was dead for a long while. It's a death that should've stuck since it brought a whole new level to Spider-Man's rogues gallery.

It's pretty sad that DeMatteis got guilt-tripped/shamed into writing an open letter about how Kraven's Last Hunt "wasn't supposed to be about su*cide." I think that it's 100% about that. I feel like you pretty much covered all the bases, but yeah - Pete's love, connections, humanity, and general compassion for people - coupled with the fact he manages to stay grounded have kept him going through tragedy after tragedy. I don't know if DeMatteis was specifically trying to say "su*cide is the coward's way out", but it definitely seemed to me that Kraven lacked the bravery to face his failures and move on with his life.

    ...context, great video dude!
..."They said my mother was insane" bang!
Gwen Stacy's death "ushers in the silver age" as we hear everyone say that...(Programming)
Kraven's Last Hunt had a "character dive deep* just because he kills himself
You don't get how DEEP Spider-Man's lore is for Ben Reilly, Flash Thompson, Kaine Parker, Eddie Brock, Miles Morales and Mayday Parker to all have rogues to last a few stories...
Ditko's Kraven's first appearance is a take on the "Man is the greatest hunt of all"...the context is Spider-Man and Marvel comics was fairly new so you saw a very real person saying that Spider-Man is the most dangerous animal...
    Dude great video!

The storyline itself I know Dematteis took inspiration from Dostoyevsky and its clearly seen as in his books there was always this dichotomy between atheistic nihilism and Christian Faith.
I can definitely see that in contrasting Spider-man and Kraven, however I don't think Dematteis was or is interested in inserting Christian Faith as the alternative, but instead ties into community and having people and love in ones life and rising above despair and hopelessness. Kraven definitely reminds me of Kirillov or more so Ippolit from Dostoevsky's work "The Idiot". Nihilistic characters that choose suicide in the face of atheistic conclusions based on their reality. Ippolit justifies his bad attitude as an excuse because he has a deadly disease and questions what is moral and just about the world when suffering exists, his character also attempts suicide and has a dream about a giant Scorpion creature similar to Kraven's "The Spider" which represents the coldness of Nature and relentlessness of death that cannot be stopped that is out to destroy him that he cannot himself destroy. How can one destroy Death?
Kraven however seems to be almost an interesting mirror reversal? Like possibly how Dostoevsky's Orthodox Christian Russian's and Nobility would react to the Soviet dominance in terms of an existential crisis. Their country and faith seemingly removed and adjusting to a new status as immigrants in other worlds not their own and renewed status among the unfamiliar.
This book actually lightly touches the topic on immigrants that struggle with identity in a different country that lack community and where they see themselves and a lost sense of identity.
I love this comic actually because perhaps I read too much into it, but I love comparing it Dostoyevsky's works to gleam where there are similarities.

i read this book when i was 12 or 13 years old. It might have been the first story i read that depicted suicide so viscerally. i really liked it surpisingly

I read it at like 14-15. Kraven had always been dead by my time so he was this mythical dead villain which added an air of mystery to him. A mystery which always intrigued me. I heard about the story but wasn't able to read it. When I finally did read it thanks to the power of digital comics, I don't think I fully understood Last Hunt but I loved the ahtmosphere. The abstract imagery played into the mystery of the character. To me, Last Hunt was exactly what I expected. It felt like reading a myth.

I don't think Kraven's mom killed herself. I thought that she developed mental illness and was locked in an asylum. At least that's what I interpreted when I read the story.

Nah, it’s clearly insinuated she killed herself. It was around this time it became known that suicide seems to be hereditary too. That’s the point.

You may be thinking about the mini series that happened right after the Mad Dog storyline - where a mother is sent there (and so is spidey!)

The kraven stuff is deep. Resenting your father, the denial driving you mad , kravens final thoughts. But the actions in this action comic is not good.

This comic is not the greatest anything… narratively it was mid. It was just kraven being a creepy little weirdo as he lost his mind
The visuals were actually pretty great though
This comic is entirely undeserving of its hype
