it's so interesting to me seeing someone just getting into daredevil .as a guy who's read basically all of his runs, i think you have a really cool unique perspective
I've read a lot of Dare Devil, I don't think as much as you have, but I agree yea I thought this guy's perspective as a new fan getting into DareDevil was sick.
I love what Frank Miller did with Bullseye, not only did he make Bullseye into a pure evil and unhinged threat but also made him a skilled fighter with a good battle that overpowered Elektra. Speaking of IQ, Bullseye had a lead on Daredevil's true identity long before Kingpin figured out. Plus Bullseye figured it out on his own, based on his own observation Kingpin just found out through an envelope passed on from Karen Page's dealer
I think Born Again is essential as an epilogue to this run. Matt IS crushed. Sure, we get O'Neil's (pretty good) run between them, but he is still a wreck. Born Again also continues everything from this run: Fisk's growing paranoia, Foggy growing as a man and Matt finally getting peace from inner demons (which is hilarious, considering what happens immediately after, but still). I do think runs after this one get a little worse: Danny's had this one arc that is just BAD and Nocenti is really good if you vibe with her style. I do, but it's not everybody's cup of tea.
@@VonWenkAgreed. Chichester’s time on DD was the best since Miller’s original run. O’Neil was pretty good. Miller’s Born Again was excellent, but short and tragic. Nocenti’s run featured amazing artwork from JRJR and Williamson but focused on Far Left views that too often veered into paranoia rather than real social commentary. (Not at all my cup of tea.) Chichester’s run brought back the excitement and adventure with nemeses such as Kingpin and the Hand, giving Weeks and later McDaniel opportunities for really dynamic action sequences. It was so good. (So was Chichester’s Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD run at that time with Guice.) The Daredevil runs that followed were either too goofy, too derivative, or too forgettable to be faves. I liked Brubaker’s issues, but those were the last I read… I gave up on DD after that. Yeah, after having followed the book religiously since the early ‘80s. I’ve since sold every DD run but Miller’s, O’Neil’s, Chichester’s, and Brubaker’s. Those I’ll keep forever.
Frank Millers’ run, along with Claremont/Byrne’s X-Men, Simonsons’ Thor, Lee/Kirby FF, and Stern’s Avengers, are one of those runs that lives lives up to the hype.
I push carts at Costco 5 days a week and your videos have been extremely entertaining to listen to through a headphone I hide under my hood. Keep it up 🤘
Great video, man! Watching someone else hop into such an unqualifiedly great run (with so many excellent issues) like this one for the first time with the same joy that I had reading this for the first time a few years ago was wonderful. I know that you primarily focus on Spider-Man (which I love as a massive Spider-Man fan) but you going through other famous runs is just as much fun.
Gotta pick up the miller run. Love daredevil since probably the early 2000s (THATS RIGHT! I love the 2003 film. Especially the directors cut) and got back into the character with the Netflix show. I always heard that Daredevil is a consistent comic cause he always seems to have good to great runs and I collected man without fear and born again so I guess I should finally nut up and read miller’s run. Problem with daredevil runs is there is a lot of them and I gotta spend money to read them😂
The Frank Miller / Klaus Janson period of DD was not only a high point for the almost-canceled-series beforehand, it's a benchmark for one of the greatest Marvel creator teams ever. I highly recommend Frank Miller / Bill Sienkiewicz's Elektra Assassin solo series which followed soon after, also outstanding.
Excellent video!!! Glad I stayed for the ending. I'm sure people have mentioned already but I love the Mark Waid run. I've never read the Miller run and now I'm feelin like a dope because wow, that's some awesome stuff I missed out on
As someone that's recently read all of Daredevil's comics (the main comic anyway) and saw the ups and pretty middling points at times (mostly stuff post Miller; definitely wouldn't call any run bad), I find it kind of fitting you're talking about Miller's time on the book. I will always recommend people read the Miller comics to really get a feel for the character and why people are so passionate about him. Of course people should also read the Daredevil stuff that isn't done by Miller cause his stuff ain't the end all be all for daredevil in my opinion. It's a landmark run and influenced the character to this very day but there's runs that are just the slightest bit better.
@@Mezzo-k1y Pre Millar Daredevil is pretty good for the most part. You can certainly tell they were trying to get the hang of Daredevil early on but they managed to pull through. I enjoyed pretty much most of Daredevil's early villains that I thought I wouldn't enjoy like The Owl, The Matador or even Stilt Man. The weakest issues for me were definitely most of the ones where Daredevil was doing stuff in Europe or meeting the non street level heroes (Just not the stuff I read Daredevil for. Although the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom ones are great). I don't know if this is a hot take but most of the stuff with San Francisco and The Black Widow stuff was the most middling part of pre Millar. I didn't care for the pairing nor their drama and the change to San Francisco just felt kind of arbitrary and made for the sake of changing stuff around. I definitely wouldn't call any pre Millar stuff bad. Daredevil is the most consistent superhero comic with how even his worst issues are just meh while like 80% is really good and entertaining and fun.
Her plot was resolved in the concurrent and following Spectacular and Amazing Spider-Man issues. Fisk was also a big part of the Spider-Man books around this time . Also, see Daredevil In Love And War.
These issues still hold up, too (For the most part.). And I personally consider Born Again the LAST Daredevil story ! It just feels final, and from what I read, it was SUPPOSED to be the final issue of Daredevil! But it sold well, and they continued the series .
11:04 This is still such an amazing page. Really shows how close Bullseye got to Matt. Kinda a perfect representation of their relationship over the years.
Daredevil should be a balance between a legal drama and a vigilante vs the criminal underworld. Setting those two worlds at odds and watching how each is dirtied by the other. The Hand and all that stuff should be sparse. Daredevil works best as a character when he is grounded in reality. The mystic stuff makes it too silly. Let Dr. Strange sort that stuff out. I do think it would be really cool to see a cross over with Ghost Rider. Maybe someone who becomes the rider even though they are a child, tricked by Mephistopheles. Maybe they are mentally disturbed and believe it all to be an hallucination. Then you could have Daredevil brought in to decide if they are fit to stand trial. That would be cool!
great video i'll makes sure to read these comics now. if can give some advice in my opinion the music is a bit to loud and distracting, you can also try doing a few more takes with the voice over like make sure its the best you can do,, like the words are hard to make out some times and your ughs and ums are distracting a bit, either way great vid
Currently first time watching the show, almost done, its fantastic but what I expected from what id heard and somewhat seen, mostly just some of Chip Zdarsky, hes a great character to read because his stories are so consistently good Uhm tho your grasp on psychological terms leaves some to be desired lol 9:30 Oh hey its proto-Nobu, Kirigi you say? Oh hes in the movie, probably didnt wanna reveal his thing immediately lol
If you're continuing with Daredevil, maybe you should do Marv Wolfman's run next, especially since Wolfman created both Heather and Bullseye. Both his and Denny O'Neil's runs on Daredevil are better than their Spider-Man runs, but most of the Daredevil writers for the last decade have gotten bogged down in the mysticism of the Hand as opposed to their being a cult of assassins.
one of the things that I absolutely hated is that DD writers practically ignored everything that happened in Waid's Run aka the Greatest Run ever. Waid's Run is fantastic bc its different, its a lighter take on the character but its still true to the character of daredevil. heck the whole reason that it was made was bc DD prior to Waid's run was basically Zeb Wells Spider-Man. he was constantly getting shit on, being a dark loner, losing people he loves and being sad and depressed 24/7. and DD in the run decides that he needs to be less dark so it doesnt feel forced be he acknowledges it and I mean the run literally starts with DD trying to stop The Spot from Assassinating a well known Drug dealer's Bride at a Wedding. and in some cases I consider this run to be the perfect ending for DD comics. I mean Daredevil started out as a campy hero who for a few years was just that and it wasnt until Frank Millers Run where he became a Dark and Brooding vigilante who's life in constantly in the gutter and for Waid to bring him back to what he originally was while respecting the previous run's and still keeping it dark at times while being funny and lighthearted is just such a satisfying ending to his character...........................................................and then the next few runs ignored everything that happened in Waid's Run.
Waid's run was great and my intro to the character but the ending didn't actually make sense for reasons that Soule's run covered, plus the fact that Matt would open himself up to neverending legal trouble if he did do what he did. Soule's run gets trashed for having to follow Waid's run, but after having read almost every run from Frank Miller's and onward I can say that I think Soule's run is in my top 3 if only for the fact that I think he understood Matt's character better than most writers. 1 Nocenti 2 Miller 3 Soule 4 Waid 5 Bendis 6 Zdarsky 7 Brubaker 8 O'Neil 9 Diggle Haven't read all of Chichester's or Kelly's
Calling the Bendis and Brubaker runs "basically Zeb Wells Spider-Man" is quite the take. Yeah, Matt's life sucked but the writing is way better. Also, unlike Spider-Man, there's an inherent pessimism to Matt's character. What makes Matt interesting is he's self-destruvtive and a hypocrite. His life is supposed to be messy. Spider-Man's themes have always been aboit reponsibility and growing in maturity. Daredevil's themes since Millar's run have basically been a dtory of Captain Ahab vs Moby Dick. Waid's run cooled it down a little but it never could uave lasted, the character would lose so mich of who he was if we stuck with how Waid's run ended
