Just a hint--if you set the timer on your phone for the amount of time you have in the port, it removes some of the worry about ship time vs. island time. Also, simply plan to be back 75 minutes before "all aboard" time. If you messed up the times, you are still 15 minutes early.
My wife and I had the displeasure of multiple annoying interactions with a couple in the cabin next to us. Noisy, profane, rude behavior on the balcony. It got worse when we asked them to moderate their behavior. We were overjoyed to witness them running for the ship as it was already pulling away. To my surprise the ship stopped, turned around and got them. Just kidding. The rest of our cruise was peaceful.
As someone who's had to deal with the entitlement of the chronically-late (and has even gotten in trouble for calling them out in the past), these pier-runner videos are SO cathartic.

These “pier runners” are the same people that live the closest to work and are late every day. I worked with a guy that lived literally 10 minutes from work. He would be 20 minutes to 30 minutes late almost every day. I asked him one time when he realized he was gonna be late? Was it after the time he was actually supposed to be at work? Being late, all the time is selfish, people are expecting everybody else to work on their time schedule. I’m glad to see that these ships leave when they say they’re going to leave. When it cost people thousands of dollars to re-join the ship or to head home maybe they will learn their lesson? 🤷🏻♂️
Yes! I have dealt with a few. The narcissism is stunning. Even had one tell me, after showing up at a restaurant for a group dinner 1.5 hours late, basically, "Well, that's who I am and that's not going to change." Or some such. She was a good person, but thought everything revolved around her.

Sometimes that is the case, I'd imagine. Many people are self-absorbed. Some have lost track of time while some of them are not on ship's time as their watches reset to local time and they did not realize it. These last ones think they are back in plenty of time only to realize that they are woefully late. Still others went out on tours and either traffic or accidents kept them from getting back when they should have been well within the cutoff. And I bet quite a few get all liquored up and lose track of everything.
@@bcarter9252 NO. There is very little similarity between the propulsion plant on, and manoeuvring of, an oceangoing cruise liner and an automobile. It is often very unsafe or effectively/practically impossible to return to a berth so shortly after leaving. Do they have astern propulsion? Of course. But it's not like backing you car into a parking spot.
Pier runner videos are some of my favorite videos online. As someone who has worked customer service for a long time, it’s so cathartic to see people have to deal with the consequences of their actions.
Shouldn't point and laugh, it's already their loss to miss the ship, they have already gotten consequences, ship and everyone else is not expected to wait but still don't shame, you don't know if they were in some kind of situation.
I mean, there’s thousands of people on that ship. A handful being late out of thousands is predictable. Doesn’t mean they need to wait for them but being late isn’t some moral failing. And, no. I’m NEVER late. My anxiety won’t allow it.
It is not about pulling out immediately. It is more about the gangway. Once the gangway has been taken down they are not going to take the time to hook it back up. That would take too long. It would delay the ship. It they were about to take down the gangway and they saw you running toward it they would wait for you. If the gangway is already down they are not going to hook it back up.
This. I was crew and played golf with the captain at every port. That's what he told me. If a late passenger is sprinting for the ship, he'd probably wait, if they were casually walking back he'd leave them. Run for it!
I used to drive a bus for a college, so had pretty much the same passengers every day for months on end - and it was *ALWAYS* the same people who'd be running down the drive, with a slice of toast in hand, yelling for me to wait, when I started backing down the drive before turning. Every. Single. Time.
I have a friend that I legitimately have to tell her to be here an hour before I want her here. And she will STILL be 30 minutes later than when the party starts. 🤦🏼♀️ Some people are truly terrible with time management.
I can relate to that, Jack. I drove a bus here in the UK for five years and part of my route included picking up from a school. I lost count of the number of kids I saw in the mirror running after the bus. I had a set time to leave and when that time came - I left.
The kids who were on the ship that left their parents behind were fine. There were other family members on the ship that took care of the children. If you saw the whole video, it was the wife's fault. The wife hadn't returned and the husband got off the ship to look for her and they ended up both being left behind.
True love...the Husband get stranded with wife in a strange port ...there are no laws that protect your rights... you may even be robbed at gun point.. I dont like cruises for various reasons but those who do have to be VIGILANT to follow the rules of the ship. Otherwise your relaxing vacation will turn into your worse nightmare and you will miss that boss that you hate back home.

If you arent early then you are late. And if you are late you are screwed. Most of us learned to tell time in kindergarten. Its a handy skill to retain.
My wife and I took a cruise every year, in November. We made it a point to be back in time to grab a quick snack and head to the best place to watch the "Pier Runners". This was one of the better parts of the cruise.
@@tomsunday My bf and I are on a cruise rn. We watched a lot of pier runners so far. We took 4 pit stops recently. And none of them made it. I stuck my head over the balcony and started singing the theme song from Rocky when he's climbing running up the Lincoln Memorial stairs and everyone joined in. I'm not kidding.

I have been on many cruises. The ships' PA, paperwork, phone app, and various workers tell everyone multiple times what time you need to be on the ship and the time it currently is when exiting the ship. People who do not pay attention or just assume that the ship will wait are 100% responsible for their actions. If you're on a ship sponsored excursion and there is an incident that ship will wait. It's always safer to do a ship sponsored excursion.
I haven't done a cruise yet but I can guarantee I will only do official excursions for that reason alone. It is worth paying more to know that the ship will still be there at the end.
@@cvn6555 Absolutely this. And if something happens with the excursion where the ship canNOT wait, your stay and travel to the next port is taken care of, by not only the cruiseline. Hopefully your travel insurance would kick in too, since it'd be a SHIP-purchased excursion.
We always do ship sponsored excursions. Much safer and just like Lynn said, the ship will wait. And they actually advise you to do that instead of doing some side road freak show. You never know what could happen when you’re in a different country.
@@TwoHorses7Ducks I looked up the exact timeframe that another cruise line has for the same excursion, and it seems there's not that much time to do snorkeling. Looking the timeframe up was a good thing because THIS WAY I can get ready quicker and be MORE prepared to have a good time, re: shopping bags on my feet for putting on my wetsuit, a waterproof backpack/bag for my stuff, even a thermos for coffee which will stay hot for 8 hours! It'll go in the little 'holder' on the bag. The excursion's for 4 hours, since we leave at 9 am, get there at 10:30, water temp MAYBE 65-70, and then going back to the pier while wet, so I'll wear layers and warmer clothing, Plus waterproof lipstick and eyeliner!!!
The greatest pier dash I ever saw, was in 2012 a couple where the husband was jogging to the ship and a brisk pace group walked past the wife and right up to the gate and made it in time. The husband then stood waiting while the wife took a very obviously slow waddle down the pier screaming expletive's at her husband for fat shamming her and yelling at the crew "don't you dare". Well we watched the crew offer the husband on or off and then abruptly closed the gate. When the Captain was making his rounds, people ask him and he responded with "Passive aggressive behavior and threats towards crew members is not tolerated, her being late to the pier was the second reason she was left behind. I heard her from the top deck and made the call" 2 nights later we ran into the husband and got him sloshed, man was oppressed by that woman for 20 years.

My husband and I took a cruise for our honeymoon. We made sure we were back onboard even a couple hours before time to leave. There was no way we were getting left lol
If I take a shore excursion, I am getting back on the ship two HOURS before departure time. And there's a hidden reason for that: I get first dibs on the buffet! By then, the chefs will have had ample time to restock the snacks that I missed out on. Yes, I'm sick and evil but I'm getting my hands on the salmon puff snacks first!

(People who choose to ignore common sense). I have been on 3 cruises and chose to be back 2 hours early on all of them. Better safe than sorry and it doesn't ruin your cruise.😂 Being left behind will always be what you remember most about that cruise. 😆
Had a captain just pull away from the dock. We waited an hour and a half. Blew the horn and one lady in the group of 10 just stopped walking. Closed up and left them screaming at us. Funniest thing of my life was hearing two ships singing goodbye
I was one of those late returns. I thought I had plenty of time to walk back. When I arrived, the ship was down to one open door. I did make it to great cheers from my fellow passengers. I was never late again.
Usually I always make it back to the ship at least 1-2 hours before it sails, but one time my mom had a friend in the port we were at. We hung out with her the whole day, until it started getting late, and we have to get on the ship in an hour. We ride In the friends car but, we got into a car accident, It wasn’t major just a tap, but the other driver wasn’t very happy, so we were held back for a while, we had to run back to port, this was a while ago, so I was young and my sister who was also young was there, Including my grandma who doesn’t have the best knees. We ran as fast as we could and thankfully we made it on. Its funny because there was still people who were much later than us!

One time I was on a flight and some people got on at the last second, they kept bitching about the nerve of some people (who were smart enough to get there in time for the line) in the 1-hour long airport security screening line not allowing them to cut in line to avoid missing their plane. Having stood in the line myself just an hour earlier I had no sympathy for them.
I've worked the tourist industry in Ketchikan, AK for two seasons and Pier Runners are freaking hilarious. 🤣😂 They're always like "OMG HOW COULD THEY LEAVE WITHOUT ME!?"
I was taught to be on time by gradeschool. TARDYS ON REPORT CARD WERE PUNISHED PERIOD. at the breakfast table your butt was warm if dad finished and you weren't seated yet. I was NEVER LATE. I find it childish for grown adults whom can't figure out how to be on time for appointments without someone else MAKING THEM BE ON TIME. ( my mom was like this.) And they do it on purpose. HOW DID THEY EVER GET A PASSPORT TO GO ON A CRUISE?
Me too. I can look God himself in the face and swear I've never been late for anything. I always add in a fudge factor. As i've gotten older, I've become increasingly rude to people who keep me waiting. Five minutes and I get narky, ten minutes and I'm no longer there. My own daughter knows I will not wait.
At the port of Cabo we had to take a tender into the port. The ship was moored off the shore. We left that evening as it was getting dark As our Norwegian ship left under the guidance of the port pilots, we gradually came to a stop. Off in the distance we saw the lights of a tender approaching, which pulled up to the ship. There was a door that opened and a ladder extended onto which three people ascended. My hubby who is a former merchant seaman quipped, "They must have left the chief cook. they would never leave without the captain nor the cook!"
Back when gas was $2.50 a gallon, during a Q&A with the captain he said that for every hour they left the pier late, the ship used $23,000 of fuel to make up time to the next port. I can only imagine what it costs now
Also, the cruise company is charged docking and port fees by the various ports. Once the mooring lines are released, the ship is considered as having left the berth and the port. The ship can only come back to the dock if it pays the fees again and those fees are $$$$$. (It’s not just cruise ships, this is true for cargo ships as well) Also, slightly related each cruise company is allowed/has bargained for X number of docking per year in a port, they aren’t going to give up one of their precious docking allotments to pull back in to pick up someone who missed the boat. Every little thing on these ships are regulated and scheduled and subject to contract with the ports. How many hours of exhaust from the generators vs the engines, how much grey water can be discharged, how many hours of port side crew support. The fuel quantity onboard is based on X number of hours underway at Y speed, waiting at the dock with engines idling then having to run them at a higher speed to make up lost time means higher consumption rates which = more $$$. It’s cheaper for the cruise company to leave someone behind and help them get to the next destination or home than to hold the ship or come back.
Back in 2008, I saw a situation at Skagway, Alaska, where the cruise ship at the pier next to ours actually left an hour before it was supposed to, and left over 30 people standing on the pier looking at the empty slip where their ship was supposed to be. The US Coast Guard was alerted and forced the ship to come back and pick up their stranded passengers. The ship in question probably carried only 400 or so passengers, far fewer than our ship's 1200. Most, if not all, of the stranded passengers had signed up through the cruise line for excursions which were due back well before the scheduled sailing time--the ship sailed without checking whether or not everyone was back aboard.
Hi Ken! Thank you for sharing that. It's one of the first times I hear of this. What a story. Do you remember which cruise line this was? I heard of ships leaving because of the tide but not checking if everyone is onboard? Wow!
If the ship sailed earlier than scheduled, obviously that is a totally different story and the ship SHOULD go back and get the passengers but if the passengers were just late getting back, I am totally in favor of the ship saying, "We'll see you at our next port of call."
When we were on a cruise and docked in Mauritius rumor was that the captain left his wife behind because she was late returning from an excursion. A ship waits for no-one.

I saw a documentary about a cruise ship which waited about 25 minutes for one couple. This delay meant that the ship would miss its slot at the next port so they needed to sail faster, unfortunately this higher speed cost about £25k in extra fuel.
Once the ship starts moving away from the pier, it ain't coming back! 1) Stay on ship time, 2) come back an hour before call time (which also lets you avoid long lines to embarkation), 3) only take SHIP'S excursions (if you're on one and it's late back, the ship WILL wait). If you're on your own, too bad, so sad!
Me and five other passengers from the Dawn Princess returned 45 minutes late from a diving excursion. On the trip back to the ship everything that could go wrong, went wrong. A heard of goats blocking the road, a delivery scooter/truck with a flat tire blocking the road, and the only "traffic jam" that Aruba had seen in years, all combined to make us late as hell. Fortunately, being that this was an excursion arranged by the ship, they had to wait for us. The cab (minibus) driver drove right up to the gangway to let us off. He refused to take payment for the ride and thanked us for being so patient. As we were scrambling up the gangway to the ship, the Captain announced throughout the ship that we (the late people) had arrived and the ship would be leaving immediately. There was a loud and sarcastic cheer the rang out from the two ship at the pier. Then the Captain announced that we not to blame for the delay as it was not our fault for being late. At that point, there was a very loud cheer and applause from our ship, and the Carnival ship across the pier. Even though the Captain had absolved us of any wrong doing, the eyes of hundreds (maybe thousands) of people were on us and it sucked. As we got onboard, my wife and the wives of the other guys were standing in the lobby at the top of the gangway; all of them with their arms folded, drumming their fingers on their arms and looking very dissatisfied. Fortunately, they were just giving us guys a hard time. That (thankfully) was my only time as a pier runner. We (the six couples) spent the rest of the cruise as friends, sometimes even taking excursions together.
It's worse in the Navy...you miss your ship...they charge you to fly you out to next port and you can expect to lose a stripe or two...we had one guy just miss the ship in the US Virgin Islands, but catch a ride on a Coast Guard Cutter. He just had the Captain scream at him for 10 minutes and that was all. The Captain was so amused that he was actually able to catch a ride he didn't punish him further.
We had pier runners in Puerto Vallarta a couple weeks ago. Officers were trying to hurry them along and the lady kept stopping at the kiosks to shop!! There was a group of us on the top deck and on that side of the ship and we started "encouraging" them to move. We were already 20 min late leaving.
In Napier, NZ we had some people arriving back late. We were watching them jogging along. Then one stopped to take photos of the musicians and vintage cars on the pier. No regard for everyone who were waiting.
Had some dock runners in the VI. We were only going over like 200 miles so the Capt waited. Bow and Stern line still on but 2 hrs late, is unacceptable!!! Here they finally come. They ran 20 ft then walked. Capt dropped the lines and left them. I talked with the Capt and two Officers at the Captains dinner that night. He waited due to weather anyway. Epic!!!
I think these vids are hilarious. Since we all have cell phones, there is no excuse for being late. My favorite of these is the passengers on the ship.
One guy I saw in a documentary on the QE2, a first class passenger rang Cunard to advise he was running late but was on his way to the ship. Ship did wait,although Captain was getting concerned about the incoming tide. If they had to wait much longer the ship would have problems clearing a bridge. When the guy arrived he saw the Captain and thanked him ….and then told him he was delayed because his driver couldn’t find a tabacconist who stocked the cigars he liked. Captain was not impressed and told him so.
If you’re going to go on a tour while in a port of call, always book it through the cruise line because you are guaranteed to get back on the ship even if the tour is running a little bit late. If you book excursions on your own, then your fate is in your own hands.
Yep. I’ll do a 2-3 hour private tour if it starts shortly after getting off, but a longer tour or an afternoon tour I will always book through the cruise line. I know they’re a bit more expensive, but if it’s something I really want to see or do, it’s worth it just for pease of mind.
Or book with locals but do it in the early part of the day. Don't book an excursion or decide to go on a tour that is s heduled to last until 1 hour before departure. I generally make plans or reservations through small businesses in ports but if we're supposed to be on board by 4, I plan for the activity to be done AND to have travel time back to the port (if necessary) no later than 1.
Definitely! I did an Alaskan cruise last summer (totally worth it, especially on Holland America) and a shore excursion I was on came back a tad late. Because it was an official excursion through HA, they waited for us, and we found out we were literally the last people on board.
One aspect to note is that ships/vessels pay fees/taxes to the ports or country they enter. Once the rope is untied they cant come ashore unless those fees are paid again. So it is way cheaper for the pier runners to find their way home. Ship didn’t leave them they were late.
I love how these people are really late, yelling, and throwing up their hands, complaining to anyone that will listen to them. and still following the ship as it has to stop for them as it leaves.
We were on a cruise in New Zealand where our dining room waiter missed the ship due to a horrendous traffic jam. Fortunately the next stop was also in New Zealand so he somehow got to the next stop. He was teased by the other staff for the remainder of the trip.
I would collapse in panic and cry until I couldn't see the ship anymore...then start to figure out how to get back to the boat or home ..and would never leave my kids behind without me.
The ship only has a specific amount of time to stay in port. Once that time has passed, even if only by a short time, a whole new block of time costing thousands of dollars would have to be paid again. It is ridiculous for people to miss the time to be back.
Yes pier Runners, Same as commuters late for the commuter boat, Ran a old commuter boat in Boston during the 1980s, You always get some one running down the dock as your backing out of a ferry slip, there jumping up and down waveing there arms,, priceless !

It seemed idiotic to do that. You’re going to need a phone to help you make travel arrangements etc. If someone on the ship doesn’t have you or your traveling partners number that is a much easier problem to solve with a phone than without one!
I knew someone whose mother was left. If I recall rightly she got so ornery about it that they told her she had to fly home as they wouldn't let her back on if she flew to the next port.
I used to work on cruise ships as a dancer 💃& singer long time ago and one Sunday my bf and I lost track of time in Venice (not sure how it happened, normally we’re very punctual people) and the worst part was that you can’t run some part of town because of water canals. As staff members we had to be onboard 30 min before passengers so in that aspect we’re 30 min late but we made it just on time (30 min before departure) It was very stressful and I still have occasional nightmares about missing the ship😁
We saw it as the sundowners entertainment , many a time have I and many others spent time at the rail watching hapless drunks making a fruitless effort at re-joining the vessel
in my experience most people miss the ship when there is a difference between local time and ship time. Most people use cell phones now a days, which auto turn to the local time. Their so used to using that to tell time, they forget ship time is off. We fix this by always using the ship ap to tell time, because the ship app is always set to ship time
I almost learned this the hard way. Fortunately, I saw a clock at the airport and was shocked to see that my phone automatically resets the time whenever I'm in a different time zone. I guess it uses GPS to track where I am and adjusts itself immediately. Don't forget to go into your settings menu and click the switch that says "Switch between time zones." That might help. I also download a free kitchen timer app and set it for the amount of time remaining before the flight leaves.
I'm too paranoid to be pulling something like this. For flights I get to the airport like 3 hours prior sometimes. I'd rather chill in the airport knowing nothing is going to go wrong.
My first cruise back in 1980’s we got to the ship as they were pulling up the gang plank, luckily they put it back so we could board. We’ve sinced cruised more than 50 times and always check and double check departure time, make sure our watches are in sync with the ship’s time and get back to the ship at least one hour before departure.
We saw a couple come screaming up to the dock in Venice, Italy, in a taxi boat. Too late. The ship was already away from the pier. The taxi boat driver was stopped right next to the ship and police boarded. Apparently he was speeding. We heard later that they had taken a boat to a glass factory, not a ship sponsored tour. They didn't buy anything so the factory refused to take them back to the ship. They finally found a taxi boat but it was too late.
It would be interesting to know what the agreement with the glass factory had been. If they had arranged transportation and the factory hadn't made clear it was contingent on making a purchase, they could sue the factory for the cost of their flights.
@@thomasdalton1508 Other than watching the boat let them off at the pier and watching it get stopped by the police, we only heard things second hand. We had taken the ship sponsored tour to the same place and didn't have to buy anything. But there were independent boats waiting by the pier that were not ship sponsored so my guess is they took one of those.

I witnessed this once on a cruise, they kept calling this couples names over the PA thinking they might be on the ship, then as the motors fired up, I saw the couple running down the dock, they were lucky and made it just in time
Unless you have been in an accident or something, there is no excuse for being late back to the ship. Good for your behind if it gets left. We make it a habit to be back on board at least an hour ahead of time.
Not so, I took my mother-in-law on a chair lift to see the sights and when we got to the top they shut-down for lunch, a one hour break. Luckily it was a coach tour and I must say the passengers were not friendly, I thought it was cold on the mountain but it wasn't as frosty as the reception we got. Another time I got lost going back to the coach and the time I had allowed soon evaporated and talk about stress, every street looked like the right one only it wasn't and I had to back-track time and again. Luckily there was a great bunch on the coach and they cheered me on when they saw me running towards them. I told I'd met a girl and lost track of the time and I got patted on the back as I went to my seat.

I used to work uniformed security at the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, Ca. While I never saw any "pier runners" myself I did see a group of people who arrived at the terminal to board thier cruise ship. Only problem being that the ship had pulled away from the pier and had just entered the main channel to leave the harbor. Plus, pretty much everyone who worked there was gone for the day....The "gentleman" was having a complete meltdown and ranting about how he had been in touch with the cruise line and that the ship would not leave....😆 I was laughing like crazy all the way to my car.

Had a few rather overtly entitled idiots from time to time but given my size and attitude, no one got overtly stupid on me. But overall, it was pretty fun....One day a cruise ship stayed overnight on a port call and I was posted aboard the ship itself to help out the ship's security department. The unexpected perk with that being that I was allowed to go to the crew's mess deck for my meal break ( Food was excellent) and every hour or so someone would come along with water, juice or hot coffee for us. ☕️ (Trust me...A hot cup of coffee at 02:00 hours does help you with staying awake☕️)

Some people simply don't do hard deadlines. They go through life being late but getting away with it. I'd bet none of these people are British ( unless they are under 30) we British would be far more frightened by the excruciating embarrassment of being late than the fear of being left behind 😱😂
I went to New Orleans on a business trip and saw a cruise ship docking area near my hotel. I heard it was sounding off and wanted to get the thrill of running over to the ship. I ran as fast as I could and I saw the ship leaving. By the time I got near the boarding area, the ship jumped to warp and was at least 4 football fields away. It was fun trying that simulation.
I was late with my family for a royal Caribbean cruise once. They decided to stop the ship and sent one of the little life rafts (not the lifeboats but the small ones) to pick us up and take us to the ship.
I worked in Skagway, Alaska for over 20 summers. I have absolutely no sympathy for these muttonheads. I drove tours and if there was any way we could miss a ship, the tour was over and it was an immediate return to the ship. Nobody on any of my tours ever came close to missing a ship. Say the truth, many of the people are just plain stupid and deserve to be left behind. When I was working in Skagway, a cruise passenger got on a on bus to take him into town. He sat down immediately behind my friend, the driver, and asked him what is the exchange rate into Alaskan currency. Without missing a beat he told the passenger it 2 dollars US for one dollar, Alaskan. The man gave the driver $20.00 US and the driver gave him $10.00 US back. After the transaction, the man mulled over why he had $10.00 US instead of Alaskan. Shortly he began to laugh at himself. Alaska is part of the US. He was a good sport and told my friend to keep the $10.00. There will always be people missing ships. Just make sure it isn't you. In Alaska it can be a very expensive mistake.

At many ports, cruise ships have to sail on the tide. If they stop and come back to the dock, not only will they have to pay for the extra fuel burned, but the cruise line has to pay for an extra day in docking fees, which adds up to thousands of dollars. Worse, they can end up occupying a spot scheduled for an incoming cruise ship.
I thought if kids were left alone on a cruise ship they died? Literally, the end of the world for them. Just the way of the world I guess. WAIT! Isn't there some lady on the Love Boat that might take care of them? Asking for a friend who has kids.

Our Royal Caribbean excursion ran late on St. Martin and we were all late getting back. Fortunately, they waited an extra half an hour cuz there were 30 of us, and it was their (terrible) excursion. We won't be doing an excursion so late in the day anymore. It was too nerve wracking!
I've seen a couple other videos about the mother who missed the ship that her kids were on. The other videos mention that their uncle is on the ship with them so they're not taking the next leg of the trip by themselves.

On one of my first cruises, my husband and I were up on the pool deck and a lot of people were over to one side looking over the railing. We managed to find a spot and saw a young couple standing on the dock as we sailed away. She was sobbing. IIRC, a small boat ended up bringing them to the ship. For another cruise, our plane broke down, causing us to arrive after the ship was supposed to have sailed (ALWAYS book your arrival for the day before the ship departs). However, it turns out the ship was delayed leaving for some reason and we made it to the ship.
I will admit me and my family were once peirce runners. Lol but we were part of a group of 50. Booked the excursion through the cruise. Both busses broke down. Making us 30 min late. We all ran.
Another hint, the ship will blow its horns 3 times. If you hear the first one, you have plenty of time to get there but its TIME TO GO. We had to put some hurry up in our step once but didn't have to out right run. It's best to plan on being back an hour early. Most cabbies, bus drivers and local tour operators know what time you have to be back and will do what they can to remind you and even help you. Plus you will get cheered and jeered on your way on board.
On my first cruise, after our day in Jamaica, we were sitting on our balcony watching another ship depart. A couple came running down the pier yelling for them to stop. They found a handy guy with a motorboat close by who took them out to their ship - not sure how much money changed hands - and the ship stopped to await their arrival at a hatch near the stern of the ship. They were lucky that they and all their bags made it onboard. Definitely taught me to not be late getting back to the ship!

You've given some great advice, @tomsunday. I think the most important thing is keeping your phone/watch on ship time. No auto time zone setting. If you don't know how to do that, fund out, BEFORE you leave the original embarkation point, or it could really cost you. Also, for those of you who are so self-important that you think yuo can start jogging and wave your arm and the ship will come back to the dock... you're adorable... but no. That's not how it works, no matter how important you think you are, or who you know or who your related to or where you got your law or medical degree. That's what makes these videos so priceless.
This video made me remember when I took a day trip by boat to Catalina Island off SoCal. As the boat arrived there, there was an announcement of our departure time and the man on the loudspeaker ordered all us passengers to repeat with him what time that was, more than once. That worked to really get that time clear in my memory, but my friend and I were both very careful to be back regardless. And one benefit is that Catalina isn't very big, so you're not ever very far away from the dock.
I've only been on one cruise, but my sister and I made sure we were back at least 30-45 minutes before the ship was scheduled to leave. It was nice because we had some time on the ship practically by ourselves

Just a hint--if you set the timer on your phone for the amount of time you have in the port, it removes some of the worry about ship time vs. island time. Also, simply plan to be back 75 minutes before "all aboard" time. If you messed up the times, you are still 15 minutes early.

My wife and I had the displeasure of multiple annoying interactions with a couple in the cabin next to us. Noisy, profane, rude behavior on the balcony. It got worse when we asked them to moderate their behavior.
We were overjoyed to witness them running for the ship as it was already pulling away. To my surprise the ship stopped, turned around and got them.
Just kidding. The rest of our cruise was peaceful.

These “pier runners” are the same people that live the closest to work and are late every day. I worked with a guy that lived literally 10 minutes from work. He would be 20 minutes to 30 minutes late almost every day. I asked him one time when he realized he was gonna be late? Was it after the time he was actually supposed to be at work? Being late, all the time is selfish, people are expecting everybody else to work on their time schedule. I’m glad to see that these ships leave when they say they’re going to leave. When it cost people thousands of dollars to re-join the ship or to head home maybe they will learn their lesson? 🤷🏻♂️

Yes! I have dealt with a few. The narcissism is stunning. Even had one tell me, after showing up at a restaurant for a group dinner 1.5 hours late, basically, "Well, that's who I am and that's not going to change." Or some such. She was a good person, but thought everything revolved around her.

Sometimes that is the case, I'd imagine. Many people are self-absorbed. Some have lost track of time while some of them are not on ship's time as their watches reset to local time and they did not realize it. These last ones think they are back in plenty of time only to realize that they are woefully late. Still others went out on tours and either traffic or accidents kept them from getting back when they should have been well within the cutoff. And I bet quite a few get all liquored up and lose track of everything.

It is often very unsafe or effectively/practically impossible to return to a berth so shortly after leaving.
Do they have astern propulsion? Of course. But it's not like backing you car into a parking spot.
Pier runner videos are some of my favorite videos online. As someone who has worked customer service for a long time, it’s so cathartic to see people have to deal with the consequences of their actions.

It is not about pulling out immediately. It is more about the gangway. Once the gangway has been taken down they are not going to take the time to hook it back up. That would take too long. It would delay the ship. It they were about to take down the gangway and they saw you running toward it they would wait for you. If the gangway is already down they are not going to hook it back up.
This. I was crew and played golf with the captain at every port. That's what he told me. If a late passenger is sprinting for the ship, he'd probably wait, if they were casually walking back he'd leave them. Run for it!

I can relate to that, Jack. I drove a bus here in the UK for five years and part of my route included picking up from a school. I lost count of the number of kids I saw in the mirror running after the bus. I had a set time to leave and when that time came - I left.
The kids who were on the ship that left their parents behind were fine. There were other family members on the ship that took care of the children. If you saw the whole video, it was the wife's fault. The wife hadn't returned and the husband got off the ship to look for her and they ended up both being left behind.

True love...the Husband get stranded with wife in a strange port ...there are no laws that protect your rights... you may even be robbed at gun point.. I dont like cruises for various reasons but those who do have to be VIGILANT to follow the rules of the ship. Most of us learned to tell time in kindergarten. Its a handy skill to retain.
My wife and I took a cruise every year, in November. We made it a point to be back in time to grab a quick snack and head to the best place to watch the "Pier Runners".
This was one of the better parts of the cruise.

I stuck my head over the balcony and started singing the theme song from Rocky when he's climbing running up the Lincoln Memorial stairs and everyone joined in. I'm not kidding.

I have been on many cruises. The ships' PA, paperwork, phone app, and various workers tell everyone multiple times what time you need to be on the ship and the time it currently is when exiting the ship. People who do not pay attention or just assume that the ship will wait are 100% responsible for their actions. If you're on a ship sponsored excursion and there is an incident that ship will wait. It's always safer to do a ship sponsored excursion.

I haven't done a cruise yet but I can guarantee I will only do official excursions for that reason alone. It is worth paying more to know that the ship will still be there at the end.
@@cvn6555 Absolutely this. And if something happens with the excursion where the ship canNOT wait, your stay and travel to the next port is taken care of, by not only the cruiseline. Hopefully your travel insurance would kick in too, since it'd be a SHIP-purchased excursion.
We always do ship sponsored excursions. Much safer and just like Lynn said, the ship will wait. And they actually advise you to do that instead of doing some side road freak show. You never know what could happen when you’re in a different country.
@@TwoHorses7Ducks I looked up the exact timeframe that another cruise line has for the same excursion, and it seems there's not that much time to do snorkeling.
Looking the timeframe up was a good thing because THIS WAY I can get ready quicker and be MORE prepared to have a good time, re: shopping bags on my feet for putting on my wetsuit, a waterproof backpack/bag for my stuff, even a thermos for coffee which will stay hot for 8 hours! It'll go in the little 'holder' on the bag.
The excursion's for 4 hours, since we leave at 9 am, get there at 10:30, water temp MAYBE 65-70, and then going back to the pier while wet, so I'll wear layers and warmer clothing,
Plus waterproof lipstick and eyeliner!!!
The greatest pier dash I ever saw, was in 2012 a couple where the husband was jogging to the ship and a brisk pace group walked past the wife and right up to the gate and made it in time. The husband then stood waiting while the wife took a very obviously slow waddle down the pier screaming expletive's at her husband for fat shamming her and yelling at the crew "don't you dare". Well we watched the crew offer the husband on or off and then abruptly closed the gate. When the Captain was making his rounds, people ask him and he responded with "Passive aggressive behavior and threats towards crew members is not tolerated, her being late to the pier was the second reason she was left behind. I heard her from the top deck and made the call"
2 nights later we ran into the husband and got him sloshed, man was oppressed by that woman for 20 years.

If I take a shore excursion, I am getting back on the ship two HOURS before departure time. And there's a hidden reason for that: I get first dibs on the buffet! By then, the chefs will have had ample time to restock the snacks that I missed out on. Yes, I'm sick and evil but I'm getting my hands on the salmon puff snacks first!

Had a captain just pull away from the dock. We waited an hour and a half. Blew the horn and one lady in the group of 10 just stopped walking. Closed up and left them screaming at us. Funniest thing of my life was hearing two ships singing goodbye

I was one of those late returns. I thought I had plenty of time to walk back. When I arrived, the ship was down to one open door. I did make it to great cheers from my fellow passengers. I was never late again.

Usually I always make it back to the ship at least 1-2 hours before it sails, but one time my mom had a friend in the port we were at. We hung out with her the whole day, until it started getting late, and we have to get on the ship in an hour. We ride In the friends car but, we got into a car accident, It wasn’t major just a tap, but the other driver wasn’t very happy, so we were held back for a while, we had to run back to port, this was a while ago, so I was young and my sister who was also young was there, Including my grandma who doesn’t have the best knees. We ran as fast as we could and thankfully we made it on. Its funny because there was still people who were much later than us!

One time I was on a flight and some people got on at the last second, they kept bitching about the nerve of some people (who were smart enough to get there in time for the line) in the 1-hour long airport security screening line not allowing them to cut in line to avoid missing their plane. Having stood in the line myself just an hour earlier I had no sympathy for them.

I was taught to be on time by gradeschool. TARDYS ON REPORT CARD WERE PUNISHED PERIOD. at the breakfast table your butt was warm if dad finished and you weren't seated yet. I was NEVER LATE. I find it childish for grown adults whom can't figure out how to be on time for appointments without someone else MAKING THEM BE ON TIME. ( my mom was like this.) And they do it on purpose. HOW DID THEY EVER GET A PASSPORT TO GO ON A CRUISE?

Me too. I can look God himself in the face and swear I've never been late for anything. I always add in a fudge factor. As i've gotten older, I've become increasingly rude to people who keep me waiting. Five minutes and I get narky, ten minutes and I'm no longer there. My own daughter knows I will not wait.
At the port of Cabo we had to take a tender into the port. The ship was moored off the shore. We left that evening as it was getting dark As our Norwegian ship left under the guidance of the port pilots, we gradually came to a stop. Off in the distance we saw the lights of a tender approaching, which pulled up to the ship. There was a door that opened and a ladder extended onto which three people ascended. My hubby who is a former merchant seaman quipped, "They must have left the chief cook. they would never leave without the captain nor the cook!"
The very least that can do is to have speakers on the pier playing the soundtrack from Chariots of Fire to help these guys out.

Back when gas was $2.50 a gallon, during a Q&A with the captain he said that for every hour they left the pier late, the ship used $23,000 of fuel to make up time to the next port. I can only imagine what it costs now

Also, the cruise company is charged docking and port fees by the various ports. Once the mooring lines are released, the ship is considered as having left the berth and the port. The ship can only come back to the dock if it pays the fees again and those fees are $$$$$. (It’s not just cruise ships, this is true for cargo ships as well) Also, slightly related each cruise company is allowed/has bargained for X number of docking per year in a port, they aren’t going to give up one of their precious docking allotments to pull back in to pick up someone who missed the boat. Every little thing on these ships are regulated and scheduled and subject to contract with the ports. How many hours of exhaust from the generators vs the engines, how much grey water can be discharged, how many hours of port side crew support. The fuel quantity onboard is based on X number of hours underway at Y speed, waiting at the dock with engines idling then having to run them at a higher speed to make up lost time means higher consumption rates which = more $$$. It’s cheaper for the cruise company to leave someone behind and help them get to the next destination or home than to hold the ship or come back.
Gasoline and ship fuel aren't the same price, duh!

Back in 2008, I saw a situation at Skagway, Alaska, where the cruise ship at the pier next to ours actually left an hour before it was supposed to, and left over 30 people standing on the pier looking at the empty slip where their ship was supposed to be. The US Coast Guard was alerted and forced the ship to come back and pick up their stranded passengers. The ship in question probably carried only 400 or so passengers, far fewer than our ship's 1200. Most, if not all, of the stranded passengers had signed up through the cruise line for excursions which were due back well before the scheduled sailing time--the ship sailed without checking whether or not everyone was back aboard.
Hi Ken! Thank you for sharing that. It's one of the first times I hear of this. What a story. Do you remember which cruise line this was? I heard of ships leaving because of the tide but not checking if everyone is onboard? Wow!

If the ship sailed earlier than scheduled, obviously that is a totally different story and the ship SHOULD go back and get the passengers but if the passengers were just late getting back, I am totally in favor of the ship saying, "We'll see you at our next port of call."

I saw a documentary about a cruise ship which waited about 25 minutes for one couple. This delay meant that the ship would miss its slot at the next port so they needed to sail faster, unfortunately this higher speed cost about £25k in extra fuel.
The penalties are very costly. A lot of people don't understand exactly how much they have to pay for waiting.
It’s like passengers expect to own the whole ship and it’s timetable just because they have a ticket in their hand.
I would just hang out at the pier just for the show...and enjoy some popcorn and a drink...😅 I have never been on a cruise...maybe someday I will go 🙂

Once the ship starts moving away from the pier, it ain't coming back! 1) Stay on ship time, 2) come back an hour before call time (which also lets you avoid long lines to embarkation), 3) only take SHIP'S excursions (if you're on one and it's late back, the ship WILL wait). If you're on your own, too bad, so sad!

I can’t stand to be late.
Me and five other passengers from the Dawn Princess returned 45 minutes late from a diving excursion.
On the trip back to the ship everything that could go wrong, went wrong. A heard of goats blocking the road, a delivery scooter/truck with a flat tire blocking the road, and the only "traffic jam" that Aruba had seen in years, all combined to make us late as hell.
Fortunately, being that this was an excursion arranged by the ship, they had to wait for us. The cab (minibus) driver drove right up to the gangway to let us off. He refused to take payment for the ride and thanked us for being so patient.
As we were scrambling up the gangway to the ship, the Captain announced throughout the ship that we (the late people) had arrived and the ship would be leaving immediately. There was a loud and sarcastic cheer the rang out from the two ship at the pier. Then the Captain announced that we not to blame for the delay as it was not our fault for being late. At that point, there was a very loud cheer and applause from our ship, and the Carnival ship across the pier. Even though the Captain had absolved us of any wrong doing, the eyes of hundreds (maybe thousands) of people were on us and it sucked.
As we got onboard, my wife and the wives of the other guys were standing in the lobby at the top of the gangway; all of them with their arms folded, drumming their fingers on their arms and looking very dissatisfied. Fortunately, they were just giving us guys a hard time.
That (thankfully) was my only time as a pier runner.
We (the six couples) spent the rest of the cruise as friends, sometimes even taking excursions together.

We did have special camaraderie for the rest of the cruise, which made the cruise special.
It's worse in the Navy...you miss your ship...they charge you to fly you out to next port and you can expect to lose a stripe or two...we had one guy just miss the ship in the US Virgin Islands, but catch a ride on a Coast Guard Cutter. He just had the Captain scream at him for 10 minutes and that was all. The Captain was so amused that he was actually able to catch a ride he didn't punish him further.

We had pier runners in Puerto Vallarta a couple weeks ago. Officers were trying to hurry them along and the lady kept stopping at the kiosks to shop!! There was a group of us on the top deck and on that side of the ship and we started "encouraging" them to move. We were already 20 min late leaving.

In Napier, NZ we had some people arriving back late. We were watching them jogging along. Then one stopped to take photos of the musicians and vintage cars on the pier. No regard for everyone who were waiting.

Had some dock runners in the VI. We were only going over like 200 miles so the Capt waited. Bow and Stern line still on but 2 hrs late, is unacceptable!!! Here they finally come. They ran 20 ft then walked. Capt dropped the lines and left them. I talked with the Capt and two Officers at the Captains dinner that night. He waited due to weather anyway. Epic!!!

One guy I saw in a documentary on the QE2, a first class passenger rang Cunard to advise he was running late but was on his way to the ship. Ship did wait,although Captain was getting concerned about the incoming tide. If they had to wait much longer the ship would have problems clearing a bridge. When the guy arrived he saw the Captain and thanked him ….and then told him he was delayed because his driver couldn’t find a tabacconist who stocked the cigars he liked. Captain was not impressed and told him so.

If you’re going to go on a tour while in a port of call, always book it through the cruise line because you are guaranteed to get back on the ship even if the tour is running a little bit late. If you book excursions on your own, then your fate is in your own hands.

Yep. I’ll do a 2-3 hour private tour if it starts shortly after getting off, but a longer tour or an afternoon tour I will always book through the cruise line. I know they’re a bit more expensive, but if it’s something I really want to see or do, it’s worth it just for pease of mind.

Or book with locals but do it in the early part of the day. Don't book an excursion or decide to go on a tour that is s heduled to last until 1 hour before departure. I generally make plans or reservations through small businesses in ports but if we're supposed to be on board by 4, I plan for the activity to be done AND to have travel time back to the port (if necessary) no later than 1.
Definitely! I did an Alaskan cruise last summer (totally worth it, especially on Holland America) and a shore excursion I was on came back a tad late. Because it was an official excursion through HA, they waited for us, and we found out we were literally the last people on board.
Way more entertaining than the magician, comedian, juggler, or band on the ship.
One aspect to note is that ships/vessels pay fees/taxes to the ports or country they enter. Once the rope is untied they cant come ashore unless those fees are paid again. So it is way cheaper for the pier runners to find their way home. Ship didn’t leave them they were late.

We were on a cruise in New Zealand where our dining room waiter missed the ship due to a horrendous traffic jam. Fortunately the next stop was also in New Zealand so he somehow got to the next stop. He was teased by the other staff for the remainder of the trip.

The ship only has a specific amount of time to stay in port. Once that time has passed, even if only by a short time, a whole new block of time costing thousands of dollars would have to be paid again. It is ridiculous for people to miss the time to be back.

It seemed idiotic to do that. You’re going to need a phone to help you make travel arrangements etc. If someone on the ship doesn’t have you or your traveling partners number that is a much easier problem to solve with a phone than without one!
I knew someone whose mother was left. If I recall rightly she got so ornery about it that they told her she had to fly home as they wouldn't let her back on if she flew to the next port.

I used to work on cruise ships as a dancer 💃& singer long time ago and one Sunday my bf and I lost track of time in Venice (not sure how it happened, normally we’re very punctual people) and the worst part was that you can’t run some part of town because of water canals.
As staff members we had to be onboard 30 min before passengers so in that aspect we’re 30 min late but we made it just on time (30 min before departure) It was very stressful and I still have occasional nightmares about missing the ship😁

in my experience most people miss the ship when there is a difference between local time and ship time. Most people use cell phones now a days, which auto turn to the local time. Their so used to using that to tell time, they forget ship time is off. We fix this by always using the ship ap to tell time, because the ship app is always set to ship time

I almost learned this the hard way. Fortunately, I saw a clock at the airport and was shocked to see that my phone automatically resets the time whenever I'm in a different time zone. I guess it uses GPS to track where I am and adjusts itself immediately. Don't forget to go into your settings menu and click the switch that says "Switch between time zones." That might help. I also download a free kitchen timer app and set it for the amount of time remaining before the flight leaves.
I wear an old fashioned wrist watch (you know, hands and numbers), to make sure I know ship time!
Now imagine not relying on an app to think for you. People used to be able to do it!
I'm too paranoid to be pulling something like this. For flights I get to the airport like 3 hours prior sometimes. I'd rather chill in the airport knowing nothing is going to go wrong.

I get there atleast an hour before my flight. It usually only takes me 10 minutes to get through security. Then I have time to chill before my flight.
My first cruise back in 1980’s we got to the ship as they were pulling up the gang plank, luckily they put it back so we could board. We’ve sinced cruised more than 50 times and always check and double check departure time, make sure our watches are in sync with the ship’s time and get back to the ship at least one hour before departure.
We saw a couple come screaming up to the dock in Venice, Italy, in a taxi boat. Too late. The ship was already away from the pier. The taxi boat driver was stopped right next to the ship and police boarded. Apparently he was speeding. We heard later that they had taken a boat to a glass factory, not a ship sponsored tour. They didn't buy anything so the factory refused to take them back to the ship. They finally found a taxi boat but it was too late.
It would be interesting to know what the agreement with the glass factory had been. If they had arranged transportation and the factory hadn't made clear it was contingent on making a purchase, they could sue the factory for the cost of their flights.
@@thomasdalton1508 Other than watching the boat let them off at the pier and watching it get stopped by the police, we only heard things second hand. We had taken the ship sponsored tour to the same place and didn't have to buy anything. But there were independent boats waiting by the pier that were not ship sponsored so my guess is they took one of those.

I witnessed this once on a cruise, they kept calling this couples names over the PA thinking they might be on the ship, then as the motors fired up, I saw the couple running down the dock, they were lucky and made it just in time
The kids on board were with their uncle. The parents caught a flight to the next port and rejoined the ship. Tempest in a teacup.

Unless you have been in an accident or something, there is no excuse for being late back to the ship. Good for your behind if it gets left. We make it a habit to be back on board at least an hour ahead of time.

Not so, I took my mother-in-law on a chair lift to see the sights and when we got to the top they shut-down for lunch, a one hour break. Luckily it was a coach tour and I must say the passengers were not friendly, I thought it was cold on the mountain but it wasn't as frosty as the reception we got. Another time I got lost going back to the coach and the time I had allowed soon evaporated and talk about stress, every street looked like the right one only it wasn't and I had to back-track time and again. Luckily
there was a great bunch on the coach and they cheered me on when they saw me running towards them. I told I'd met a girl and lost track of the time and I got patted on the back as I went to my seat.
In one video I watched, a couple was over an hour late IN THREE PORTS IN A ROW! I can't believe the captain waited for them.

Usually I always make it back to the ship at least 1-2 hours before it sails, but one time my mom had a friend in the port we were at. We hung out with her the whole day, until it started getting late, and we have to get on the ship in an hour. We ride In the friends car but, we got into a car accident, It wasn’t major just a tap, but the other driver wasn’t very happy, so we were held back for a while, we had to run back to port, this was a while ago, so I was young and my sister who was also young was there, Including my grandma who doesn’t have the best knees. We ran as fast as we could and thankfully we made it on. Its funny because there was still people who were much later than us!

I used to work uniformed security at the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, Ca.
While I never saw any "pier runners" myself I did see a group of people who arrived at the terminal to board thier cruise ship.
Only problem being that the ship had pulled away from the pier and had just entered the main channel to leave the harbor.
Plus, pretty much everyone who worked there was gone for the day....The "gentleman" was having a complete meltdown and ranting about how he had been in touch with the cruise line and that the ship would not leave....😆

Had a few rather overtly entitled idiots from time to time but given my size and attitude, no one got overtly stupid on me.
But overall, it was pretty fun....One day a cruise ship stayed overnight on a port call and I was posted aboard the ship itself to help out the ship's security department.
The unexpected perk with that being that I was allowed to go to the crew's mess deck for my meal break ( Food was excellent) and every hour or so someone would come along with water, juice or hot coffee for us. ☕️
(Trust me...A hot cup of coffee at 02:00 hours does help you with staying awake☕️)

I grew up in Palos Verdes and had a job at a restaurant at ports O’call. It was always fun watching the cruise ships leave every weekend.

Some people simply don't do hard deadlines. They go through life being late but getting away with it. I'd bet none of these people are British ( unless they are under 30) we British would be far more frightened by the excruciating embarrassment of being late than the fear of being left behind 😱😂

I went to New Orleans on a business trip and saw a cruise ship docking area near my hotel. I heard it was sounding off and wanted to get the thrill of running over to the ship. I ran as fast as I could and I saw the ship leaving. By the time I got near the boarding area, the ship jumped to warp and was at least 4 football fields away. It was fun trying that simulation.

I was late with my family for a royal Caribbean cruise once. They decided to stop the ship and sent one of the little life rafts (not the lifeboats but the small ones) to pick us up and take us to the ship.
I worked in Skagway, Alaska for over 20 summers. I have absolutely no sympathy for these muttonheads. I drove tours and if there was any way we could miss a ship, the tour was over and it was an immediate return to the ship. Nobody on any of my tours ever came close to missing a ship. Say the truth, many of the people are just plain stupid and deserve to be left behind. When I was working in Skagway, a cruise passenger got on a on bus to take him into town. He sat down immediately behind my friend, the driver, and asked him what is the exchange rate into Alaskan currency. Without missing a beat he told the passenger it 2 dollars US for one dollar, Alaskan. The man gave the driver $20.00 US and the driver gave him $10.00 US back. After the transaction, the man mulled over why he had $10.00 US instead of Alaskan. Shortly he began to laugh at himself. Alaska is part of the US. He was a good sport and told my friend to keep the $10.00. There will always be people missing ships. Just make sure it isn't you. In Alaska it can be a very expensive mistake.

At many ports, cruise ships have to sail on the tide. If they stop and come back to the dock, not only will they have to pay for the extra fuel burned, but the cruise line has to pay for an extra day in docking fees, which adds up to thousands of dollars. Worse, they can end up occupying a spot scheduled for an incoming cruise ship.

The children were not left alone. There was another adult relative onboard who was able to look after them until the parents caught up with the ship.

Our Royal Caribbean excursion ran late on St. Martin and we were all late getting back. Fortunately, they waited an extra half an hour cuz there were 30 of us, and it was their (terrible) excursion.

I've seen a couple other videos about the mother who missed the ship that her kids were on. The other videos mention that their uncle is on the ship with them so they're not taking the next leg of the trip by themselves.

On one of my first cruises, my husband and I were up on the pool deck and a lot of people were over to one side looking over the railing. We managed to find a spot and saw a young couple standing on the dock as we sailed away. She was sobbing. IIRC, a small boat ended up bringing them to the ship.
For another cruise, our plane broke down, causing us to arrive after the ship was supposed to have sailed (ALWAYS book your arrival for the day before the ship departs). However, it turns out the ship was delayed leaving for some reason and we made it to the ship.
Everyone gets back on time except for the self important ones, do not wait one second for them.
Hopefully its a lesson they only have to learn once!
I will admit me and my family were once peirce runners. Lol but we were part of a group of 50. Booked the excursion through the cruise. Both busses broke down. Making us 30 min late. We all ran.

Yes. Narcissism is such an insidious thing, you'll find they're always late, any consideration for you be d**ned.
Another hint, the ship will blow its horns 3 times. If you hear the first one, you have plenty of time to get there but its TIME TO GO. We had to put some hurry up in our step once but didn't have to out right run. It's best to plan on being back an hour early. Most cabbies, bus drivers and local tour operators know what time you have to be back and will do what they can to remind you and even help you. Plus you will get cheered and jeered on your way on board.

On my first cruise, after our day in Jamaica, we were sitting on our balcony watching another ship depart. A couple came running down the pier yelling for them to stop. They found a handy guy with a motorboat close by who took them out to their ship - not sure how much money changed hands - and the ship stopped to await their arrival at a hatch near the stern of the ship. They were lucky that they and all their bags made it onboard. Definitely taught me to not be late getting back to the ship!

When in Istanbul, a city known for traffic jams, I returned to the port an hour early - and shopped at the nearby shops and was on time for boarding.

You've given some great advice, @tomsunday. I think the most important thing is keeping your phone/watch on ship time. No auto time zone setting. If you don't know how to do that, fund out, BEFORE you leave the original embarkation point, or it could really cost you.
Also, for those of you who are so self-important that you think yuo can start jogging and wave your arm and the ship will come back to the dock... you're adorable... but no. That's not how it works, no matter how important you think you are, or who you know or who your related to or where you got your law or medical degree. That's what makes these videos so priceless.
Let's not kid ourselves, it's the arrogance of some people is unbelievable. "They'll wait for me." Narcissism at it's best.

We cruised on our honeymoon in 1982 to the Bahamas. One couple was late. They were given a ride on the pilot boat and had to climb to rope ladder.
I wonder how much that cost!

Health and safety regulations probably don't allow passengers to climb rope ladders these days!
This video made me remember when I took a day trip by boat to Catalina Island off SoCal. As the boat arrived there, there was an announcement of our departure time and the man on the loudspeaker ordered all us passengers to repeat with him what time that was, more than once. That worked to really get that time clear in my memory, but my friend and I were both very careful to be back regardless. And one benefit is that Catalina isn't very big, so you're not ever very far away from the dock.
Amazing opportunity for someone to operate a fleet of pier run golf carts for these folks. Just sayin' $$$$

This makes me feel bad for the stranded passengers but in the end it's their responsibility to be back on time.
Agreed. I also feel bad for them but if its their fault, they need to learn......ship waits for none!
If at a foreign port, hope they have their passports and a high limit, low balance credit card on them. Expensive but not the end of the world.
Its called punctuality and using your brain.
The thing is that before passengers disembark they are read ythe riot act. So its not like they didn't know.

I've only been on one cruise, but my sister and I made sure we were back at least 30-45 minutes before the ship was scheduled to leave. It was nice because we had some time on the ship practically by ourselves
