    For anyone who hasn't cruised before; one of the first things you'll hear over the entercom, ship wide, is the cruise director or the captain himself telling everyone to set their watches to "ship's time". Ship's time doesn't change throughout your cruise, even If you change time zones. Always observe ship's time. And, figure on getting back to the ship with at least an hour to spare. Not only will it save you from being left behind, but it will save you a long line wait when trying to reboard the ship, and you'll get to get lunch or cocktails with very little wait. Once everybody gets back aboard, they tend to b-line straight for food or to the bars. You can save this hassle as well by being early.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      One warning: make sure you go to your phone's settings and look for a setting that allows world clock functions. Ask the captain what the time zone is and set it for THAT time zone. That way, you won't have to worry about it changing back and forth one hour when you step off the ship! Had that happen to me when flying to Orlando, FL once. Fortunately, I found out about this when stepping off the plane, not when heading back!

      It’s also important to book excursions through the cruise line and not a 3rd party because you will not get left if that excursion is late or something happens. The ship will wait for you until you get back so you’re basically guaranteed to not get left by booking through the cruise line!

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@desireer1050 True, but you should still read up on reviews about the excursion if you can. The cruise line could be thinking about "breaking up" with them because they were late too many times. This suggestion was passed on to me by another TH-camr. She searched for the dreadful tour operator that was very late getting her back to the ship. No need for her to worry, the cruise line broke up with them and booked tours through a different one.

      My sister used to pick up grade school students at the school where her own daughter also attended. She did it for the extra money and she was there picking up her own kid anyway.
      She would often complain of this one boy that was always holding everyone up because he wouldn’t come out of the building with everyone else and was inside playing around while everyone else was sitting in the SUV waiting for him to come strolling out with a smile on his face because he felt so important that everyone was waiting for him.
      She talked to his parents about it and it would straighten out for a few days and then he was back to his old behavior again.
      One day she was not able to pick up the kids and asked me if I would take her SUV and do it for her. She told me where to park and the kids knew where to look for me. They all got in except HIM. One of the kids asked me if I wanted him to go in and look for late kid. I said no, and started the SUV and drove away. All the kids in van got quiet and you should have seen the looks on their faces.
      Later my sister yelled at me and asked me why I left his sorry ass behind and that his mother was pissed off and my sister was concerned about losing a customer.
      Well…… you can guess what I told her.
      She still did ask me every now and then to pick up the kids for her after that and on those days she would make sure to tell that kids mother that I was the one picking up the kids that day so the mother could tell her little darling that he better be on time today. Strangely enough he always seemed to be on time for those days. I wonder why that was?

    I worked on cruise ships for several years and now I'm cruising twice a year, always with Royal. I have NEVER seen a ship leave on time because someone was always late, despite all kinds of warnings and announcements. Most people probably do not realize this, but extra time at the pier costs the ship money. So, fair warning, be on time!

    The real reason cruise ships don't wait is not because they're on a "tight schedule". It's because every minute they're in port after their scheduled departure time they're billed for by the port.

  • @allisong7715
    @allisong7715 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It’s nearly impossible to blame any ship or any cruise line for leaving without passengers. They give multiple announcements as to when to be back on board. It’s up to the passengers to be back on board and on time. If the ship leaves at 4pm, I’m back on board no later than 3pm. These ships will not wait for you.
    However, if you book an excursion through the cruise line and it’s late getting back, they’ll wait. If you don’t book an excursion through the cruise line (but by a third party), then you may have a good chance of being left behind by the ship.

The company we were doing the tour with started arranging a car to pick us up right away. We managed to find a number to call the cruise line and they patched us through to the ship. Spoke to the captain and explained to him that we were gonna be 20 minutes late and asked what he could do. He said he would "hold the ship up no worries and will make up the extra time on the water". I will forever be thankful to that captain for his kindness. There are still great people in this world!

Harbor Master has to confirm people belong on the liner, arrange a water taxi or other craft to pick up late people , board them ,and transport them to meet the cruise ship just out side harbor, where captain has his trained crew men vested up,, and get gear to cargo door to receive the late comers. Years ago when I worked for the feds at the seaport the QE 2 was running late so they had a tug boat pick us up at the pier and took us to the ship while it was still moving. They opened an entrance and grabbed each of us by the hand and pulled us on board.

      @Chris Purdon in one video the captain calculated that it's best to leave port without filling up with fuel as the tugboat bringing in the fuel tanker was late. He said if he waits it will take a few hours to fill up with fuel which would throw the ship off schedule. So he calculated he had enough fuel to get to the next port where the fuel tanker can meet his ship.

However, what most people don't realize is that each Cruise Line have a representative on the island that will assist any cruiser's left behind get to the next port of call at their expense, and it's a good idea to carry your Passport and ID at all times. The only time a ship will wait, is if you booked an excursion through that cruise line or on the ship, and that for some unforeseen reason they return to the ship late.
