  • Cruise ships are a foodie's heaven. There's something for every craving, whether it's late-night pizza, a juicy steak, seafood, or salad for those looking for a lighter option.
Even so, cruise lines aren't typically known for their high-quality food. While that's not to say you won't have delicious meals, not everything offered will be the same quality you would expect in fine-dining restaurants.
If you are someone with a sensitive stomach or simply want to avoid some of the worst options, here's a list of 5 foods you should never eat on a cruise.

Yea exactly. I spend "half" on each cruise and go on "twice" as many, as I would otherwise. Spend $4,000 on one 7-night cruise OR
go on two 7-night cruises at $2,000 each.

While tap water in poor countries is risky, the tap water on the ship is treated to be safe although it does have a chemical after taste. I will take a filter bottle or pitcher instead of having to buy bottled water on the ship. Agree, eggs on hot tray in buffet are lousy; I choose to get breakfast in the dining room on a sea day and the last morning.

The ketchup and mustard tip is actually spot on. I've seen people take a bite of their hotdog and then add more condiments while touching the nozzle to their food. It's more the outside bacteria, not that the ketchup went bad, that causes stomach issues in some people. Kids are especially guilty of this. I saw one swipe the drippimg ice cream from a soft serve machine and stick their finger in their mouth and do it again. It was beyond disgusting and luckily a crew member saw it and shut down the machine for "cleaning".

Am I missing something here? Have been on many cruises and never heard of anyone ever having food poisoning from eating food on the ship. Norovirus yes and touching handles and serving utensils can be ify. I love the eggs every morning and yes the omelets are the best choice. Can't afford the extra in speciality dining. Just say'n we enjoy cruising and maybe we are just stupid lucky never got sick nor saw any problems with other passengers. Fully agree when off the ship------be careful what you eat or drink and always have wipes or something for your hands ----- don't bring something back to the ship your ship mates will not be happy.

Condiments, which contain vinegar, do not need to be refrigerated, even at home. Maybe they shouldn't be out in the sun but people are way too obsessed with the condiments. Mayo, if homemade, does need refrigeration, due to eggs. Just use common sense, people.
It's that corn syrup in them that needs to go.

Some buffet still have self serve with ladles and serving spoons, handled by everybody.
Make sure you sanitise your hands after taking your food and before eating. Better still, sanitise your cutlery unless it is an individually wrapped disposable. Wipe down every knob and handle in your cabin as soon as you get on board, including the TV remote.

The egg product used is usually liquid eggs which is the same used for omelets. If you want "real" eggs, order fried or poached eggs. It's true that the liquid eggs have a strange texture when scrambled.

I am an infection control nurse. Like you, in the buffet, I wash my hands before dining, and after I have my food. I believe that the issue with the condiments, ice cream, etc., is that everyone does not wash their hands. It is difficult to change people’s mindset. Since the Civil War, Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton, have educated people on infection control. It's the 21st century, and people for some reason do not know, understand, or implement handwashing techniques.

In the 1980s, I had a patient post-operative. I heated her food, but first, she wanted the bedpan. I gave her the bedpan and had four paper towels for her. One paper towel to wet her hands, one paper towel with soap, one paper towel to rinse the soap off, and lastly a paper towel to dry her hands. She asked, ‘What is that for?’ I told her, I thought she might want to wash her hands before she ate. She said no. I threw the paper towels in the trash and set up her tray.
I left the room and found a wise nursing assistant. Mrs. Ellison, Mrs. Ellison, I cried out and told her what happened. Her reply. Honey, don't you know people think their own filth is clean? I never forgot.

Ive been on 17 cruises none of these issues have arisen on four different cruise lines, princess, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and celebrity. I think it’s a bit of a nervous Nellie attitude, they’re very very scrutinized on their hygiene practices. Poor hygiene practices will bar these cruise lines from being able to visit their main source of income, the US ports. Going to specialty is a waste of hard earned money. Why would you want to do that when you have the main dining room with four or five options at every meal, the buffet available always, not to mention snack fruit places like the pizzeria or the burger joint. Going to the special dining is a waste.

So much wrong with this content. 1. Ketchup (and other condiments) are shelf stable, meaning they do not have to be refrigerated. We refrigerate them at home because we use them so slowly over time. Cruise have a tremendous number of people they are serving, so the condiments change over quickly. Nobody is getting food poisoning from ketchup. 2. Ships aren't bringing in local water for you to drink. It's highly filtered and perfectly safe to drink water onboard a cruise ship. 3. I'll give you the eggs are better fresh. 4. Most cruise ships serve you at the ice cream machines for this very reason. Someone is usually stationed at each machine.
