I had multiple pier runner moments on my lastest cruise to Bermuda. Join me as I recount the tale of passengers from the NCL Gem who missed their cruise ship after a 54-hour stop in Bermuda. From parents with strollers pier running against the clock to a ship-sponsored excursion cutting it close, and even two unfortnate passengers who missed their ship. Today we are talking about the latest pier running moment in Bermuda.

Tom. I believe if it’s a ship sponsored excursion, the ship typically has to wait. I know this as in a past cruise, we had taken a very long ship sponsored excursion which ended up being over an hour late. Needless to say, the ships officers weren’t very happy as the four buses of cruise passengers showed up at the dock.
Absolutely, ships typically wait for passengers if they're on a sponsored excursion, though there are exceptions, like when they need to leave due to changing tides or to make space for another cruise ship arriving in a busy port. However, if the ship does depart while a sponsored excursion is delayed, the cruise line is responsible for ensuring those passengers catch up to the ship at the next port, at no extra cost to the passengers. In this instance at the Royal Naval Dockyard, there was only one other ship docked, which fortunately meant our ship could wait a bit longer without any issues.
Thanks for a great video, we sail over 20 times but never saw a missing return the ship like in this video. Thanks again.
I am glad you enjoyed the video!
Trust me. This is not the first time these people have been late. If the ship excursion was late, the ship will wait. But, being late because of your own carelessness is something that should warrant a fine.
Well said. There is no excuse for this. Especially since we were at this port for 3 days!
Great video, Tom! There's a reason that we arrive back hours before "all-aboard" time!
Same here, Steve. I am back 1 to 2 hours before departure. It's better to be safe than sorry!
I don't understand how people can't keep up with time. I have never been even close.
Same here. Im back at least 1-2 hours before departure.
I have been on several cruises and this happens on every one.. I make it a point to book all excursions through the cruise line.. No matter what you might save booking at the port, it will disappear quickly if they are late and you have to fly to the next port on your dime.. I have never been close to being late and am one of the many other cruisers that stand and laugh at the inconsiderate people that think they are more important than the other 3000+ passengers are.
Better yet charge them late fee of $100 per person for coming late
That's actually a good idea. Money usually talks. However, I think people will still be late.
Ha, I love watching the pier runners - it always baffles me how many people run SO tight for the ship!
I always get back to the ship 1-2 hours before departure. I don't know why people gamble with their vacation. However, it does entertain a whole bunch of folks. Nice to meet you, Fraser!
Soon to be an Olympic event Pier Running.
😅
Are there any stats as to how many people miss the ship
I could not find any specifics. While searching, the only statistic I found was that 200 people went missing on cruise ships since 2000.
The cruise ships she reminded people to return to the ship on time or they will left behind on every passenger leaving the Ship.
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anyone miss their cruise ship in this video as your title says. Actually, no one here was even close to missing their cruise ship.
There were 2 passengers who missed the ship and were left in Bermuda. You don't see them because they never showed up. It's why the ship waited even after the runners boarded.
These people are taking this as if it’s a sport.
This is a repost, first posted ten months ago...
No, it's not. Get your facts straight before calling people out. A few months ago, I was on the Celebrity Summit and caught someone who almost missed the ship. This is on the NCL Gem cruise a few weeks ago. Different people, different time, same port.
