This game was UNREAL. And if you didn't play it with a joystick, you were missing out incredibly. I was the greatest starpilot in the galaxy at 10 years old.
I remember first flying the TIE Advanced thinking how bad ass it was after flying your standard TIE Fighter, Interceptor and Bomber then Gunboat. By the time we got the TIE Defender, the TIE Advanced seemed so outdated.
This was such an immersive game. I felt like a pilot in the Imperial Navy. I liked how the story focused on aspect of the Empire beyond just Empire vs. Rebels. The Empire had to squash civil wars, deal with pirates and defectors and I was there for all of it.
This is still the best space combat simulator that I've played. The graphics nowadays look a little outdated but boy did I love the story and story lines. The gameplay still outclasses most if not all space combat games of today.
Heres one major plus on TIE Fighter: Its is solely focusing Empire. Your main doesn't defect or switch sides

The X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance series, Dark Forces 1 and 2, and KOTOR 1 and 2 always felt like they were the true star wars to me.
Tie Fighter was absurdly outside of its time. I actually don't think any other era compares to the masterclass that was Lucas Arts circa 1994-1999
Back when the Empire was cool/intimidating and not silly/cartoonishly evil nowadays
Zaarin:"aaaaaaarghhhhhhhhhhhhh" KABOOM Thrawn:"such is the fate of traitors to the empire£ ...YES! bring this game back in HD gfx!

As a kid, my brother and I always laughed at how Thrawn always sounded angry even when things were going well for him.
I miss my days of loyal service to the Emperor :-P This game should be re-issued for Window7 and 8!!!
"Coru-skant." That pronunciation. lol
Man when the Emperor himself gave me that medal I felt so proud.

Grand Admiral Zaarin's Death was bloody fantastic.
V: Where is your fleet?
Masterpiece! Love the midi sound too. Classic.
This was the game that introduced me to Thrawn. And it showed that he was a tactical genius.
The best Star Wars game ever made. :)
