  • A long time ago... but in the same galaxy. Atratzu played TIE Fighter on the DOS as a wee little boy. But eventually he picked up TIE Fighter on steam and has now played through the whole game.

    I've actually got that tat - had it done a few years ago after living on this game, Xw, XvT, XWA in my teens! Great overview

  • @ThermalLance-hg4rd
    @ThermalLance-hg4rd ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Just wanted to say. I think you're playing the 1998 version which use the XvT engine. You are refering by mistake to the first Collector CD-ROM run that was released around 1995 which only basically doubled the resolution graphic-wise. The 98 version has quite a few problems unfortunately. The worse one is about the torpedoes/missiles. They made the mission essentially IDENTICAL to the original game while torpedoes/missiles have the same behavior than in XvT. Which, makes some missions needlessly annoying, especially if you want to do all side objectives. I'd still highly recommend the 1995 Collector release over the 98 special edition because of that alone. Only downside is, of course, the craft are untextured which dosen't look as nice.
    Fortunately we have the Tie Fighter Total Conversion mod for XWA now. Pretty much the best compromise of all the issues plus it looks a hell of a lot better.

      GAH! Rats. I worked so hard on this video too. I hate it when I miss stuff.
      Thanks for taking the time to explain the general differences between the two versions and the annoyances, I'm sure I experienced them while I played... some of those missions were quite painful to do. Although I naturally just thought I was bad at the game. haha
      And yeah, the Mod solves pretty much all the problems. I really need to try to get that working for me someday so I can play TIE Fighter the way it should be played. :)

    When to run: T/F vs E/S. Also, when you have a beam, dump it to engines and you can fly with full power to lasers and not lose speed.

      Very true. Best way to stay on someone's tail, the problem is I get used to using the throttle control instead of turning to the keyboard controls.
      So I'll often just under and over throttle instead of using keyboard commands.
      But that's my flaw. haha

      @@Atratzu I learned it playing Xwing vs Tie fighter on MSN gaming zone when I was a kid. My HOTAS now has enough buttons to hit that while still keeping my hand on the throttle. I just got freespace 2 working again so Im going to fire up all my space sims soon. Keep playing these amazing games. They may not be as pretty but they have better mechanics and were very thoughtfully and lovingly designed.

      @@Atratzu X-Wing was amazing. Pure and simple. It was like YOU did all the groundwork around the first and second movie AND you got to destroy the Death Star.
      The Otana is a nice ship but I'm sure a T/D would just dance around it and either destroy it or force them into submission.
      It's like a truck trying to outrun a sportscar.
      The T/A was fun to play as since it was the first Tie to even have a chance to keep up with an A-Wing

    Traditionally canon is just the material that the original author published. That's it.
    This idea that whatever media empire or mega corporation that buys the copyright of an IP then gets to decide what is and isn't canon is a modern invention. You have no obligation as a fan to accept whatever they present to you as canon.

    • @Atratzu
      @Atratzu  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I mean... I'm not going to argue with that.
      It's just a little annoying to needing to preface any time I talk about the expanded universe with "ugh, okay, so it's actually star wars Legends". haha

  • @hufnaaratnaaf
    @hufnaaratnaaf 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm sorry but that's not true - you can play with mouse and keyboard, but it's tedious. I know, because back in the day when I was playing it as a 6 year old we didn't have a joystick. Turning with a mouse was a journey by itself though - had to madly sweep it multiple times just to make a 90 degrees turn XD

    • @Atratzu
      @Atratzu  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're not wrong... but lets be fair... is it inaccurate to say you "need" a joystick? Because realistically speaking playing without one would be like pulling nails.
      I tried playing several flight sim's with just a keyboard and mouse, would not recommend, so by my opinion I'd say you "need" one... not that you can't function without one.
      But that's semantics, I guess. Thanks for the comment.

  • @mikeoyler2983
    @mikeoyler2983 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I loved your commentary. I see we both love the original expanded universe. However, I think a lot more needs to be said about the significance of the expanded universe of the 1990s given the fact that it had the Star Wars' or LucasArts' stamp of approval all over them. Instead of writing a whole diatribe on it, it will just have to suffice to say that books like the "Heir to the Empire" trilogy and video games like X-Wing, Tie Fight, et al. reflected a growing but maturing fan base. How unfortunate that the director himself completely ignored this fan base and the creative world that came out of it. Sadly, Disney continued this trend. Still, you as a kid were not daunted by the extremely difficult learning curve of these game and did not need to be spoon fed. You even one upped me by buying the technical manuals. I stopped with the novels, man! To me it just seems unfortunate that all of this was cast aside. I sure miss it. Thanks for this video. It was treat!

    • @Atratzu
      @Atratzu  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey, don't be too impressed by me. I grew up playing this on DOS with ye old "3.5 inch floppy" And I've always loved me some flight simulator games. haha
      Also I'm in my 30's (you might still be older then me, but it would be more impressive if some 18 year old who never heard the dial up sound tried it out TIE fighter.)
      Getting to the rest of your comment though, I definitely sympathize feeling kinda like we all were left out to dry when things switched over to Disney, but I think it's so much more... well, basically "magical" being able to come back to old star wars games like these and dusting them off and plunging into a world of my childhood fantasy where anything was possible in a video game.
      I really appreciate the comment, and always glad to find a kindred spirit! :)
