"Yeah, that would be great, right now I mainly care about money and being re-elected, however."
And there we have it, ladies and gentlemen. Modern democracy boiled down to two quotes by Quill18.

It would be interesting if politicians only got one shot, so they were never concerned about reelection. "You've got 5 years, go make it count." Maybe they'd actually get shit done then.

@@styot this usually ends up leading to "corruption all the way - make sure you get as much money as you can from your term, and secure your financial situation for the rest of your life. Doesn't matter if people will hate you, and consider you the least productive politician ever. You weren't planning to be re-elected anyway."
Also, leads to short-term thinking/planning only.
I have a better idea how to make politicians actually do useful stuff - before they get elected, they'd have to list what they want to accomplish during their term... and they'd only get paid for accomplishing, or at least making measurable progress, towards their listed goals. If they make any promises before the election, they'd HAVE to specify a punishment/consequence of breaking those promises, otherwise the promise would be only empty words. I mean, when a business agreement is made, the sides specify the consequences if one side does not fulfill the agreement - why should it be any different with politicians?
Of course this idea has the disadvantage of being inflexible. The politician would have their entire term planned from the start, and if the situation changes and requires a change of plans (say, an epidemic breaks out and politicians have to react, but none of that was planned before the election) - then by design my idea states the politicians would not get paid for anything they do in response to the new situation, because none of that was planned (i.e. agreed upon with voters) before the election.
      Some possible solutions:
      - making broad promises accounting for any possible scenario
      - making (possibly small/limited) re-elections when the situation changes
      - some system to change the terms with voters, where voters agree to change the agreement between them and the politician

    • @dutydutoslav
      @dutydutoslav 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

@@Tennouseijin Also, a lot of issues can be seemingly "fixed", but only in the short term. The politician would get paid and 5 years later everyone would find out the real costs of "fixing" the problem.

One thing I would have liked to see from this version is the implementation of some sort of extended development for your country outside of internal affairs. So for example you can build relationships with specific countries and that affects things in certain ways (immigration, religion, war, etc.) and the policies would have more of an effect over just numbers.
Like for example if you run a mars program and your countries technology and education and everything is high enough, then maybe you get a chance to get an event where you’re the first person to send a manned mission to Mars and you get a bunch of bonuses for that. So much potential, like if you’re a primarily goods based economy you could set up export deals with another country in return for cash or something else, being a world leader in scientific innovation could cause other countries to send spies to infiltrate your government or just straight up increase the number of people who come to your country for education, running a country with good health and promoting exercise in schools and things could lead your country to great sporting success in the olympics or other sports which could have some impact on something. Befriend the corrupt leader of an oil rich country to get super cheap oil at the expense of your relationship with others.
I don’t know just something that made you feel like your choices actually had an impact on the greater world more than just the foreign relations bar.
Don’t get me wrong I loved democracy 3 and have put many hours into it. Each play through just got quite stagnant after a few hours so I was hoping for something more from this game. I get it’s still in alpha though so hopefully it becomes a bit more.
(Having now watched the whole video i concede it does seem to be an improvement on the last game, just like a better version with more options and some extra flavour events. So fair play to them. Enough for me to pay for the game? Not so sure.)

@@jeremyalexander135 Someone hasn't talked to any outside of their circle.
Firstly, there's nothing wrong about being against immigration, plenty of reasons like asking working & lower middle class people to compete with cheap labour, that's bullshit, also many migrants have the advantage of sending back money where their country's cost of living and currency differences increases the value of their wages much more than here giving them a distinct advantage to the point where undercutting wages is a viable strategy.
And then there's the sovereignty argument, which is why I mostly dislike the EU as being an advocate for Direct Democracy and localism, I find supranational organisations as the EU to be basically an expansion to our already terrible neo-liberal system moving politics even further from people.

Scott Berry To be honest your two arguments are the usual generic arguments for isolationism everywhere, you don’t need to talk to anyone on any side to hear them, they are very accessible and widespread. So the first dude is still kinda right.

@@svenzverg7321 How? Neither are generic, also that's not isolationism, funny enough no-one calls Japan isolated because it has strict rules on immigration, America had stricter rules on Immigration than the UK but somehow the UK is isolationist.

@@devilmanscott No country is "isolated", strictly speaking, even North Korea. Japan has some isolationist policies, it doesn't mean that the country itself is isolated. Apparently, you have some problem with the word "isolationist", like it's an insult or something, and really want to apply it to countries instead of applying it to policies where it belongs.
"Supranational entity" is a big word and there is a shitton of them. If a country refuse to participate in any of them - that's extremely isolationist policy. If a country leaving some of them - that's an isolationist shift in policy.
What is your problem with the word? You want migrants not competing with citizens for employment and you want to achieve maximum sovereignty over domestic policies. You are isolationist. If you don't want people to put this tag on you, you need to formulate your arguments differently somehow.

Scotland also has minimum alcohol pricing per unit too, and bans on many forms of deals. (You can still sell alcohol cheaper than usual so long as it's above the minimum price per unit, but you can't do buy one get one free etc)

What ends up happening is instead of having a lot of drunks you have a lot of poorer drunks.

There are definitely issues around that, and the middle class drunkards are definitely not hit, but it does bring the minimum floor up on stuff like White Lightning and other cheap ciders etc which are sometimes cheaper than Coca Cola.
It's not a perfect system, but what is.

3:51 I dunno if you ever played that way, but in Democracy 3 you could very successfully ignore money altogether. You cannot ever run out of money and crashing the GDP gives you a negative effect but all your government programs more than offset it. I was the lowest rating possible (I think its only D or so), constantly had random events about how bad my GDP is, but I basically eliminated poverty and crime in my country and had a gigantic plus on healthcare and education.

I had to check the website after just the start of this vid and seeing that they're doing more than the two party system was my main concern from previous games.

A great way to win in Democracy 3 was to implement a flat tax of around 30% in the second turn. After that you have all the money you need to spend max on health, crime, education, development etc. Usually by the end of the first 4 years you were popular enough to win and then you got massive economic growth which guaranteed re-election forever. Worked around 70% of the time.

6:10 That must be a bug. It clearly says FIRE above the ones selected and KEEP above the ones not selected. Also, from a design perspective it has to be select to fire because firing is the affirmative action; keeping is the passive action. However, this "bug" may at times accurately simulate real life cabinet reshuffles.

While obviously I haven't played Democracy 4, it not being out yet, based on past Democracy games, it's a good idea look for inexpensive policies (both moneywise and influencewise) that have even decent positive effects at the very start of the game, and implement them at the very start - I know you did find and implement some as you went, but it's often a good idea to look at the policy lists at the start and see what they all do. Anything that boosts literacy, GDP, health, etc, is often worth implementing, as the longer-term economic benefits will more than pay for it.
Also, check your current programs and see if you like the settings, whether it might be worth increasing/decreasing the sliders. Admittedly, watching you check a few dozen policies/policy settings just to see how might not make the best TH-cam viewing.
