  • Hey guys, PotatoMcWhiskey here with a video on how to settler your first city in Civ 6. I see a lot of people struggle with this so I thought it would be worth it to make a guide talking about what goes through my head when I'm choosing a starting location.

Harvesting is short term gain in exchange for long term gain, but on the long term you'll sometimes want to use some tiles with resources for districts or wonders, so it's not so bad to harvest resources if you're planning ahead.

Honestly my OCD is half the reason I'm so bad at this game: I see unimproved resources and I immediately get builders, wether I need them or not, and always have all the buildings in each district, diverting production from more nesessary stuff.

It’s interesting watching this a year later and seeing the changes made to harvesting. Magnus isn’t quite as OP anymore. Also, it might b a good disclaimer that some of these strats aren’t quite as strong against players or online play bc of smarter combat, and harvesting too many bonus resources (which are now worth dramatically less) can stifle late game strength against a player who’s built a far more reliable economy and didn’t succumb to your early pressure
Edit: also districts now scale by number in the empire too rather than just price, making rushing them beyond the first couple cities rather futile

I know this video is old- but I have to share. My first game of Civ I had no clue what I was doing and thought the game just hated me. It was taking forever to get anywhere or make anything. I somehow made it through the ancient era into a dark age before quitting. I reloaded that save recently after winning a game on Emperor and laughed my ass off. I had spawned at the bottom of the map with no chops, my capital that I likely settled in place had no fresh water, there were no luxuries anywhere around me, to the north of me was a mountain with two lakes on either side of it, and ALL of the tiles going north were tundra hills 😭 I looked for a video to help me and came across this channel and started feeling way better about the beginning of my games- I almost reset my most recent win but stuck with it because there was enough potential to make things work!

Potato, when you consider the best spot for first city you have to include the future spot for second city and sometimes, when you're lucky to born in a spot mostly plain like in the play at 17:55 (so you have an initial big sight of the first tiles) the third city spot. I don't like cities too close to each other, cities must "breathe", the third ring of tiles in common at most, if you don't reach for example a resource too far to west, build the city further east and the second to the west. For the rest you're awesome, i discovered many things in your videos.P.S. sorry for terrible english.

Wrote all of these tips down in my notebook under Civ6 Settling: McWhiskeyisms. This was invaluable and will definitely help fine tune my gameplay even further. Still playing on Prince, but this video really helped me see some things that I was ignoring or not fully understanding; which will ultimately help me continue to increase that difficulty slider. As always, thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Can’t wait for the next one. Keep up the amazing hard work sir!! Your assistance is absolutely appreciated!!

I always go for domination victory. That's actually the only victory I've ever had. Seems easiest. I dominated the places on my continent. I sail to the next landmass and those empires have skyscrapers and looks advanced af. All I had was farms/mines and encampments and harbors. But had so many units that I squashed everyone. Takes a while tho because u have to manage so many units but it's fun

Played 300 hours in Civ5 and 280 hours in Civ6. I still learnt something from your first minute of analyzing the start location, i had no clue about the Plains hill production thing after settling. And the discussion about harvesting plots. Ive literally never harvested anything in my entire time playing the game.
I always just thought "200 turns of that resource must be better than a boost right now". But ofc it depends on the value of the thing you are building.
