- The MK7.5 Golf R didn't come with power fold mirrors in the USA. In this video we install power fold mirrors, and code the power fold mirrors to the car. For this installation the door trim panels on the Golf R will be removed, mirror glass will be removed, mirror caps, and mirror housing. The power fold mirrors and puddle lights will also need to be coded on. These power fold mirrors will also work with blind spot monitoring or DAP! These things have "standardized" location numbers. Example, at 10:47 in the video you can see listed for the channel "ENG141635-ENG116665". You will also see a search box on the screen. If you type in the second number there, 116665, then it should filter out EVERYTHING except for that one channel, easy. So here is a list of said numbers for your adaptation channels:

Another adapatation that I found nice, is if you disable Bit 5 under module 42 and 52 (door entry lights not active while mirrors folded), the puddle lights will come on as soon as you unlock the door, instead of waiting for the mirrors to unfold.
It looks cool, because you can see the light beam moving as the mirror unfolds.

folding mirrors are the easiest way to tell if my car door is locked or not.
you can tell if the car is supposed to be locked. At least in VW and Seat you can send the lock command and have the mirrors fold in while a door is still open. after that door closes then it locks it
It would be better than constantly blocking the car and looking at it for the audible and visual ques.

YES I do the same, look back to see.
Don't need to look back. My car is set to auto lock anytime all doors are closed. Never failed yet. And getting the front doors to unlock is automatic when the fobs in pocket. Opening the two rear doors is easy too, just double tap on the inside of either front door handle and the rear door auto unlocks.

This is an excellent video. I have to replace my mirror on my golf and this video is the gold standard of ones I've looked for on youtube.
Seems like an outrageous amount of work for a simple mirror update, but looks can be deceiving. Actually it's quite a sophisticated upgrade, especially for the programming concerning the infotainment system. @@HumbleMechanic went with a 2014 Subaru XV crosstrek limited. Much slower but has more space without driving like an SUV and got it for a great price. I had a mk5 dsg and the new tech is awesome but the cvt is awful. Also have a 97 miata for the fun drives so not completely missing out on all the fun. Definitely returning to the VW family for a used mk7 golf R later on.

My 2018 white Sportwagen has mirror dip on reverse, carbon fiber mirror caps and the flowing turn signal feature, but not folding mirrors. Darn you for putting up this video and getting me salivating again.
Awesome... I'm glad you're doing these upgrades explained very well like the Kessey rear door handles.... coding for these things makes the car extra cool and tons of VW owners don't even know it can be done

I used to do this on the 80's mustangs.. allot of parts from all the different fox platforms are easily installed or adapted. Didn't have power seats.. find a Thunderbird. Plugs right in. Want different map light. Find a merkury. Lol
This is one of my favorite MODs, the puddle light has saved me more that once, in dog a friendly yard... Those trim tools are key, wish I researched prior to "very, very" carefully ripping the panels away from the door... lol

HumbleMechanic - Question for ya: I have my doors set to lock after I exit the vehicle (using the prox sensor). Do you know if there’s a setting that will also instruct the mirrors to fold when this happens? I already have everything else you have coded set and currently this doesn’t work.
I’m glad my 7.5 R had these from the factory. A lot of work to install them. Great video 👍🏻👍🏻

One thing I strongly dislike with my Leon is the rear window defroster and heated mirrors are operated by different controls. The rear window defroster from the button on the climate controls, that has an adaptable timer; and the heated mirrors from the mirror adjust rotatory button, that doesn't appear to be timed. I've not been in a situation where I'd have the mirrors heating and not the rear window or vice-versa, and I sometimes forget to switch the mirrors off which can't be good for the elements 😢
Hahahha maybe it’s the camera angle. 😜. I hate that button is not blacked out
VW have some stupid ideas especially with how you fold and unfold the mirrors. You have to look at the button before and after you rotate to know which mark you are on and where to rotate it because it fully turns to 5 different position without any tactile feed back of what is the current position! Very very stupid and a normal kick back of the button to fold/unfold is much easier as in our 10 y old chevy cruze. German engineers are sometimes so dumb

I watched it to remove the mirrors on a GTI and retrofit the puddle light. The harness clip tip was awesome! Overall, the video was extremely helpful, very clear and went over every step and trick to make a clean job.
this is actually a really worthy upgrade. the puddle lights and passenger's side mirror lowering in reverse feature are already really nice upgrades (and should have definitely came standard), but the power folding just makes it feel much more luxurious...
I think the main reason they left them out ultimately comes down to cost cutting, and not really to do with the size of the car, because you can get power folding mirrors from the factory on an S3, which is about the same size as the Golf.

I agree it is very cool and important in narrow traffic. My wife old Chevy cruze had this optin and she was used to it to the degree she insisted that I buy her the next trim of Passat because the base trim did not have that auto folding mirrors.!!!

For me it would be an hour max start to finish, both sides with coding. Average DIY is 2.5 hours I’d guess
Man, it’s sad that the 7.5 R didn’t come with it along with the auto hatch. Now that I have the 2019 Tiguan SEL premium it is two options I wish my Golf R had them too. Thanks for the videos.

I don’t have fishing line but maybe I can use weed wacker line. I used it to pull the wires through the rubbers boots and panels in the hatch for the LED taillight install.

So sick! I remember when I installed the Euro tail lights on my MKV Jetta TDI. And all the long coding I changed on it too.
People in the US are making their car look Euro, whilst here in Europe we make our cars look USDM lol. I especially like the USDM Jetta/Passat taillights for the red blinkers. I guess it's because here we see the Euro lights on a daily basis and vice versa.

Good stuff. You should wrap those door clips with a small amount of tesa tape. I did that on my 6R and it cut down vibrations and buzzing a ton. Although I imagine a brand new car doesn't have many of them yet.
Great video, Charles! I don't even have a Mk7 and I still watched all of it. Clear instructions and good close-ups to show what you are doing. I'm sure that I'll be watching it all again in the future if I replace my Mk6 GTI with a Mk7.
Folding mirrors are a great idea when parking on city streets since they give an extra few inches of clearance before someone clips them with a bike or passing car. I manually fold my driver's side Mk6 mirror in when parking in Philly, NYC, etc.

Great tutorial! I want this on my MK7 GTI. I think this mixed with the sequential turn signals and also new blind spot concave-vexed mirrors, as I don’t have blind spot monitoring, would be the perfect combo. $500 for all this is a lot, but I think worth it.
If you don’t have Bilnd spot it’s like $350 for the mirrors. But add turn signals and mirrors and you may be right back up there.
HumbleMechanic yeah. $350 isn’t bad. I would do the mirrors and sequential turn signals all at the same time if I did it. Would be $500 for everything. Still not too bad.
I wish this would have been an option in the USDM. Are you going to do the dynamic turn signals as well? Then get the Euro tails. Just get lubed up and jump right down that rabbit hole.

I kinda a like manual mirror in my b6 A4, I like how they are super strong. I remember when there was a huge snow storm, all of my neighbors car mirrors was either broken off or fold back ward, while my mirror is the exact way I left. I can’t forget the face of my neighbors looking for there mirrors under in snow while I am walking to my car like some kind of hero lol I wanted to scream ITS GERMAN ENGINEERING BRO!

I recently rented a small Mercedes wagon in Italy that had this feature for the mirrors. Yeah, raid space is really tight there. This feature is probably to guard against losing mirrors to scooter riders.
It is interesting that you say this because I had a conversation with a friend about this.
On the 08 MY C-Class (W204) they had this feature (I think as an option) in the US and for the 09-14 model years they removed this feature and only Canadian cars had them.
Between the 2010 MY to the 2014 MY they redesigned the mirrors on the C-Class that looked exactly like thebmirrors on the E-Class (W212) and they have the power folding mirrors. It makes me wonder why they didn't bring back the power folding mirrors for the 2010-2014 C-Class'?
After seeing this video, I wonder how hard it would be to retrofit the C-Class to have this feature.

Power folding mirrors are standard in Ireland and as was previously said, it's a great way to confirm that ur car is locked!!

wish yours would not have automatic headlights off when no ignition, cuz thats the mod my old old audi needs, should be easy and i am comfortable with electric stuff, but good guide would be always great.

Nice instructive video, but I'd never spend the money for this feature. I would put a drop of Loctite blue on the T30's holding the mirrors on the door.
Mine has these from factory, but my car is a Japanese version imported to the UK, so for a 2014 Golf R mk7 it's got pretty much all of the options ticked. However, one thing that does get me is that I can hear the trunk handle open for the reverse camera, but my head unti only displays the sensor screen. I'll have to open the trunk and take a look as you never know what previous owners have done, espically from Japan as they like to modifiy their cars with lighting etc. It even has an ETC reader in the glove box.

I’m curious, if you want a better car, why not get one? You do 4 door kessy, engine mods , folding mirror mod... why not get a car that has all that? Having said that, your vids are cool and I’ve learned several things. Thanks for posting.

Since those don't come as standard in US, at least can you open the windows with the key? As in holding the "open" button, opens the windows and the "close" closes them all
Not by default, no. We can enable it through coding though. Who knows why VW didn't enable that on US cars, there's all kinds of small features like that missing on US cars that can be activated if you have a scan tool.
@HumbleMechanic, have you ever thought about doing a video covering if not installing a MPI / Dual Injection mod? I do not know a whole bunch about it, but do see some kits available online. I would assume it to resolve the carbon build up on the valves. Vids are great by the way, I especially love the detailed how to's like this one.

Most of them allow E85 (whats that mean? - not a serious question, but this is the kind of thing that could be covered). Whats the minimum required? How far can you go with it? Etc, etc. I need a sponsorship, because ya its freaking expensive.
@@JoshuaMillerDev Ok so I'm not a famous mechanic or blogger but here's what I know about it since I am doing the MPI next on my stg3 mk7 gti. MultiPortInjection-MPI is used here in the US (oem on the Euro VWs) is a mod done mainly when you install a large turbo, larger than even the is38 found on the Golf R, when you really want to run full ethanol fuel aka e85 to gain as much power and eliminate any dangerous knocking related w/ higher boost levels. But you need also an upgraded LPFP (fuel pump found inside the tank) to be able to run the MPI extra 4 injectors that will be installed on the intake manifold. between the MPI and LPFP you are looking at $1200 give and take. Labor is about $600 to install both. Special tune is needed for both to work, you MUST upload the tune before starting the vehicle after it all gets installed. With larger turbo and other supporting mods, you will most likely be around 450-500+ bhp on the ea888 gen3 engines. Another benefit as you mentioned, will be keeping the valves a lot cleaner from the dreaded carbon deposits which all direct injected engines suffers with. You can also run 93 octane instead of full e85 but your tuner needs to tune accordingly. One interesting thing is that you could potentially have the MPI fuse off and run only when needed to clean the valves, not its main purpose of course but in case you wanted to save gas and be on 4 injectors when boosting instead of 8, although 2 different tune maps would need to be stored in your Cobb Accessport so you could use one or the other. CTS Turbo has a MPI that sells for around $700 when on sale, reg. price is $850. I have a hybrid turbo from Europe that is larger than the is38 found on Golf R's, the larger the turbo of course the more laggy it can be, but the MPI along w/ the e85 fuel can really help tremendously! Cool?
@@yoadriaaannn thanks for the details, I like learning. Probably not in my cards for this lifetime. I am a non mechanic, but do DIY crap. Most recently had to replace my clutch because of all things the pressure plate fingers (2) popped out of their rivet. Luckily there is enough info across forums, youtube, and helpful people so I could get by. This mpi stuff interests me, however only to keep the valves clean. So it seems like a massi e amt of effort for little gain, and a side effect of having to tune which I am not trying to do. Happy with 230 or whatever this mk7 pp is.

I have OBDELEVEN and I was able to program power folding on my 2016 GTI without any problem, but I cannot get puddle lights to work.

@Charles, great video, it inspired me to pull the trigger and install these on my 2017 E-Golf here in the USA. The 2017 E-Golf is a mk7.5 Golf, so thought this would be straight forward, but my mirror doesn't fold, nor does the puddle light come on. I have programmed the door module, and I did module 09 as per your detailed video. Nothing happens when I use the new mirror knob to fold the mirror. I was trying to see how many wires you had going to your mirror control switch, as mine only has 4, two pairs at either end of the plug. The two center positions are empty.
The coding was accepted and appears to be correct as per your vid', so at a lost as to my it doesn't work. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Question: Do you have to code the mirrors or can I just use the door panel switch to fold the mirrors? I do not mine not being able to use the key fob/lock button to fold the mirror.
