I want to thank you you answered an email to me when I was eyeing an R32 1st gen. A war buddy of mine talked me out of buying such an old car for a daily. I was eyeing a new Golf R and a 21' WRX STI. I went with the STI because of more backseat leg room and trunk space. But man your vids are intense.. I just wonder are you and Eric-The-Car-Guy still buds.. Hard to say you guys aint.
Can we get an updated garage shop tour. Would love to see your set-up properly rather than trying to eyeball it in the background of your videos. Was one lift enough now it's been a few years down the line? Is there space for a 2nd lift or too cramped?
We used the cardboard method during my time in the Air Force especially for a portion of the wingtip that has screws of different lengths into nutplates inside of a fuel tank. Ensuring the right one goes in the right spot plus hardware accountability being so important in aviation maintenance 10/10. Love the videos man, keep up the great work!
Never considered buying another VW - until I've started watching Charles. He's energized me to rethink this whole thing. Only issue is that I don't live near Charles and won't be able to deploy his skills to work on my vehicle. Charles - do you do road trips?
The EA888 Gen 3 on up are pretty reliable, still have the water pump gasket issues, but nothing like they were. If you modify ANY car of ANY brand your gambling. Just keep that in mind.
Love your content, Charles. You make me wish two things. 1) That I had a Golf R 2) That I lived close enough and had enough money to get you to do literally all the work on it, so I never had to deal with it. Lol.
Great setup. My S3 made 411HP / 411 Torque (469/469 DynoJet) on pretty much the same setup on E50. The only difference is I’m running MPI. The turbo spools by 2900RPM and the transient response is like stock. It’s a great option if you want great response and a decent power bump over stock.
IE is gold, imo one of the best off-the-shelf tunes available. Customer service is top notch, 99% included with the purchase of the tune. Not like other companies that if you want them to review the tune, recommendations etc, will charge an extra fee. Besides that their app makes it so easy to make changes and do dyno runs, no laptop required / (only on mk6 platform requires laptop).
LOL. This Golf already had wayyy more horsies than it really needed as a DD. But I guess literally more power to you for doing the mods. Pity that lovely red clutch will be invisible to the world. But you'll know it's there. 😉Love the casual pop culture references. Look at me! I'm the captain now! 👀
I learned the cardboard trick from taking off the front cover on my vq35hr to do gallery gaskets. Not only are there bolts around the perimeter, but also in the center for various accessories that happen to also hold the front cover on.
@@GiuseppeBusso7 yep. Stock engine along with aftermarket intercooler, CAI, turbo inlet pipe, charge pipes, downpipe, catback exhaust, HPFP, flexfuel kit, plugs, engine and trans mounts, dogbone mount, etc… Essentially the same tune from IE that Charles is about to install on the Golf R.
I'm excited to see this build. I am supposed to get my HPFP internals any day. As soon as I swap that I'll be running full stage 2 true flex on my 7.5 GLI. I am curious the noise from the IE down pipe as well.
I knew about the cardboard trick, and totally forgot to do it on the Mk1 TT I'm rebuilding. Sad Day. Thanks for the great tips though Charles, I've used plenty of other things you've taught me!
Professional detailer! Not surprised to be honest. Most mechanics I've seen here in South Africa drive around in a s***box car that doesn't look like it'll make it to the next service :)
Watching this has reminded me that I'm glad I got rid of my mk7.5 gti. Thanks :D Love the content, just never could enjoy the cars like so many others do. Something about them just isn't me. (honestly it's a bunch of little things combined)
Great video and set up! I'm running the same set up on my daily driver 6-speed Alltrack, just with added multiport injection + hellcat in-tank fuel pump. This is a fantastic direct bolt on set up.
I bought the alignment shims from ECS since i dropped the subframe to the clutch and my camber adjustment was off quite a bit. Definately worth the money to be able to not have to put any thought into realigning the subframe
I went away from VW over the need for tools and lack of manuals under 400 bucks. But damn am I jealous of thier tunability. In a Hyundau Veloster N and the fuel system can't keep up with big power demands, and Korea hasn't figured out interior quality yet.
So for the Garrett turbo install, what tune did you use. I have a 7.5 and my tune is IE. The lkast modes I want to do is turbo, lpfp, mpi. I looked at IE and they say they are still working on the tune for the turbo for 2018 Golf R.
"start the engine mount bolts by hand" yeah theres me thinking it wasnt aluminium and sheared the thread...couldnt find another one in the country...BUT a friend was scrapping one..crsis averted...
Ah yes, Mk7/7.5 R Downpipes. Definitely not me having flash backs of doing mine in my driveway years ago, screaming, forcing the drive shaft over with a pry bar to yoink it out, cutting with an angle grinder as we pulled more and more out.
Beautiful. I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction figuring out a fueling issue on my mk7.5 ... I am currently losing fuel rail pressure when accelerating. It will dump power hard. I replaced my stock hpfp with ie internals to a 034 and did not fix it.
Awesome video, wishing I had kept my 19 Golf R. Speaking of Golfs. I do have a 19 Alltrack SEL (1.8t) that I am considering finally modifying. I am 2nd owner buying it in 19 with 6k miles. All services have been completed on time, OEM at the dealership. Car has been absolutely solid with nothing breaking except of course the dreaded sunroof leak. Thankfully very minor. I am at 68k miles currently. I do not know how much is shared with the Golf R being this is a 1.8T DSG awd verses the Golf Rs 2.0T DSG awd setup. If I were looking to do these same mods hoping for same or similar power figures what else would I need to upgrade, change? The DSG? The Haladex? Axles or prop shafts? Essentially making my Alltrack a clone Golf R Estate (the European Golf R wagon we never got).
I did not know that any of the Golf R platforms came in a manual? That's awesome now I want one! Sorry, I thought the last good Golf was the 2004 R32. Might still be?
Can you make a Video on a B5 manual transmission in response to the clutch grabbing so high? Apparently it’s an issue, no one knows VW’s as well as you, looking for adjustments in particular, looking forward to your video. Thanks

Hey Charles love the content 🔥🇿🇦. Have a question if you don’t mind answering. So as a person that wants to buy their first car being used doesn’t help. But basically I want to know if whether a rod bearing failure can be detected before it happens. I’m guessing it’s one of those thing that happen without warning right ? Because you don’t know the history of the car etc. So can it be detected before it happens? And is it worth it to replace rod bearings at all like as “preventative maintenance” will that do more harm than good? My plan is to do a compression test along with checking service history. Other than that there’s not much more I can do to prepare myself from catastrophic engine failure right? Let me know if I’m missing anything guys. Obviously I’ll also check for fault codes, accident damage. But other than that I think it’s all about luck right?
I'm not Charles, but I think if the car has good documented history, including regular oil changes, and doesn't show signs of abuse goes a long ways towards getting a good car. Always pay for a pre-purchase inspection at a good shop NOT associated with whoever is selling the car. This improves your odds as well. The EA888 is a sturdy engine, it would have to be heavily neglected or abused in order to spin a bearing. Only consider a car that appears to have been loved by its previous owner.
I may have chosen to drop the engine and trans together if I was doing all this in one shot. I also leave the rack bolted to the subframe when I pull them.
Is the clutch in the mk6 R that much stronger? I have one with an APR stage 1+, so it's around 315ish hp and it doesn't slip at all and it's far from a new clutch.

On the MK4, swapping to a single mass flywheel usually means having to swap the crank pulley for a dampened one, to counteract an unbalanced crankshaft.

How do you get trapped air out of the slave cylinder?
I think I mention that in part 2. Haha short answer is no. I tried that one time, and ended up blasting myself in the face with brake fluid
Is there a way to permanently disable the "Stop and Start" function. I have a 2024 Mk8. Thanks!
