Who’s up for a Golf R drag race!
We’ve brought in the all-new Mk8 Golf R to go up against its older brother, the Mk7, to see which is the fastest over the quarter-mile.
As you’d suspect, there’s very little to split them when you look at the stats on paper. Starting with the Mk8, it’s powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engine, which delivers 320hp & 420Nm. It weighs in at 1,551kg, and costs from around £39,000.
As for the Mk7, well it’s also powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engine, although it only puts down 300hp and 400Nm. It does weigh slightly less though, coming in at 1,483kg. This is largely down to the newer Golf R having a more advanced AWD system, however.

@@mjspeedzone5532 I had the 7R and now have the 7.5R. They both look better than the 8 but the 7.5 looks way better IMO. Also, the digital dash in the 7.5 is amazing compared to the analog gauges in the 7. From what I can see the digital dash on the 7.5 also looks better than the one on the 8.
@@Seabass901 ya the digital dash is cool. But in alberta canada it will probably freeze in colder temps. And I drove one.. its cool. Like the gps map and stuff. But I felt like there was just too much going on. It was definatly a guage cluster alright.. a cluster of info that I dident really like. lmao.. but i still think the front bumpers look better on the 7. But to each his own.. but we both agree its better thsn the 8. Did you see that back end! I think they messed it up.
Surprised that people buy a golf for the looks, it’s a golf haha.
Everything about the performance is overshadowed by the fact the 7.5 just looks so sexy 🥵
That small gap can easily be made up with simple JB4 tune. It will be interesting to see what you can get out of a tuned 8 vs a tuned 7/7.5 though.
@@Seabass901 it’s going to be the same because the MK8 still uses the same exact engine. The difference will come from the upgraded diffs in the MK8, not the engine.

I have a 7.5. Would have loved to upgrade to the 8 but that interior sucks so badly. And the exterior is a step backwards.
Performance is pretty special tho.

Nope and I owned two a 2016 Mk 7 and a 2019 Mk 7.5 Alltrack. The Mk 6 had a much nicer interior and better styling.

As a 7.5 owner, I’m glad to see the stock HP improvement on the MK8 but my car looks SOOO much better than that thing. If I had to, I would get an older one before the new model TBH
your old looks obsolete with these analogic gauges... Things has changed and now is digital fully of digitaldashboards.

It's down to the wheels I think. Those mk8 alloys look terrible. They look like ones you get in the Golf Match or low end special edition. Swap them out as soon as you buy one

Don't forget the atrocious infotainment system in the new one. I've been driving a standard 150hp Golf Mk8 since September of last year and the infotainment is so incredibly buggy that it's borderline unusable on a day to day basis. Apple CarPlay craps out and displays only a black screen at least once a week, driver aids like lane assist and cruise control disable randomly every other week, the infotainment freezes or boot loops, climate control is incredibly frustrating to use, etc. No OTA update or offline update at a dealership has mitigated these issues so far. The only way to get rid of these problems when they appear is to turn off the car, get out, lock it, and then wait a couple of minutes before trying again.

The new MK8 R is definitely fast.
The numbers that both the MK7.5 and MK8 R’s are putting up with the DSG gearbox are significantly better than the numbers that the 6MTs are putting up- I’ve been driving MTs all my life but decided that with the R, I’d try the DSG and I am very glad that I did.
There are people who have posted 1/4 mile times under 13 seconds with the stock MK7.5 R with the DSG but when you put a high torque stage 1 tune and TCU tune on the 7.5, you’re in the low 12s at worst and will be hitting 60 in under 4 seconds. APR put up an 11.9 second 1/4 mile time with the stage 1 MK7.5 R and got an average 0-60 time of about 3.6 seconds.
I am very curious to see what numbers the MK8 will be putting up with a high torque stage 1 tune with TCU tune.
I had a choice between an MK8 R and an MK7.5 that had under 5,000 miles on the dash- I went with the 7.5 and tuned it and I definitely don’t regret my decision. I like the MK8 but I don’t like it nearly as much as I like the MK7.5.
But either one, whether it’s the 7.5 or the 8 will troll Type Rs and WRXs out of the box and when you slap a tune on them, that troll becomes a trollolololol.
Not to mention that when these are tuned, you will also be able to beat a number of cars with twice as much motor and that in itself is impressive.
And the best part is that oftentimes, people have no idea WTF they just got beat by because they don’t know what a Golf R is or they mistake them for GTIs. 🤣🤣🤣

People with just stage 1 tune consistently run 3.9-4.0sec 0-60, it'll probably slowly walk the MK8

you can avoid the soft limiter in the golf 7 by holding the shifter between P and R (and I think it was also turning off the esp; but might have been only for manuals with pressing the clutch additionally). and yes these were the right letters. there is no postion where it locks in so you have to hold it there.
I feel like the only person who will confidently say the MK8 looks absolutely incredible. Love the sharpness. Of course love the Mk7.5 as well but really rate the mk8

I think the 8R would also win but a bit closer. The non OPF is about 0,5 sec quicker from 100-200. But it also depends on the options the car have...

8R would still win as it actually has 350hp and not the 320hp quoted by VW.

@Bryce Czirr I've not driven either, but from online reviews there were some slight differences in how the 7 and 7.5 drive. If I wanted an 'R' I'd go for a 7.5. The 8 being faster is what I'd expect. Why would it be slower?

This is such a coincidence I recently just loved the golf and now this video came out
Would have been interesting to see how a 2018 MK7.5 R with 310bhp (pre opf) would have faired against the MK8 R, as those were rolling road tested at 320bhp. Where as the MK8 R is tested at 340bhp.
Mat you should uses in these 1v1 drags stuff like some cares get a head start or the hit and go just to make it more even n intersting

And whether or not you figured it out in any tests after this particular one, if you were in Race or Nürburgring mode and in manual mode, it will let you hit the rev limiter and would need to upshift using the paddle.
Got a mk7 golf tdi as my first car and it's not the fastest but it's simplicity paired with how solid it feels on the road makes it a great car.

Matt, would love to see a stock mk8 vs a stage 2 mk7.5 - when comparing dyno runs the mk8 nearly holds its own. I've seen 3.9 on my mk7.5 R which you got on one of your runs in a mk8 in another video.....

I’d love to see a Mk7 R vs Mk8 R vs. Mk7 GTI vs. Mk8 GTI drag race (all four together). If you could fit 8 cars in a race, it would also be awesome to have each represented by manual and DSG too.
Also, I have not seen any information that says the Mk8 R has a locking diff up front. I assume if it did it would be the VAQ like what’s on the GTI, but all the info I can find on VW’s website suggests it has an open front differential with a brake based traction control system. Anyone confirm? Also, I could’ve sworn that I had seen videos of the new R not upshifting on its own?
Great race. I wonder if an easy stage 1 to ecu and tcu improves the 8 as much as the 7.5. My 7.5 does 12 flat with it...genuinely curious.
Yes mk8 will make slightly more power, it has a better turbo and stronger fueling system.
i would say that the new golf is just as light so that Power difference is accurate or another possibility is that it is heavier but there is a 60 nm difference in torque between the two

U can still turn off the soft limiter on the 7.5. By turning the ESC completely off (holding the button). On a manual, left foot on the clutch and rev! I suppose left foot on the break on DSG.

In Special/Nürburgring mode is does have a real limiter. It even „kind of“ bounces of the limiter. See the R test on the JP Performance channel - but it‘s im german.

I've done it in Real life,and the old A45 had no chance against our A45S.And that was with 4 of us and a boot full of shopping in the A45S vs 1 lad on his own in an A45.
The old A45's gearbox doesn't help matters as it seems to be quite slow to react off the line if it's not launched.

I have the Mk 8 R. Had a focus RS to play with and spanked it beyond belief. These mk 8 Rs are quick.
I was expecting more out of the new r. I live my mk7.5 GTI, but for the money you're not getting much more from the r compared to a gti with a good tune. Looking forward to seeing the tunes for the new cars.

@@carwow OK. All Golf GTIs and Rs sound like vacuum cleaners from the factory. Unfortunately, now BMW have copied the formula and ruined the 1-Series in the process so by the looks of things, I'll be keeping my 2018 M140i for a long time!
