But to each his own.. but we both agree its better thsn the 8. Did you see that back end! I think they messed it up.

It's down to the wheels I think. Those mk8 alloys look terrible. They look like ones you get in the Golf Match or low end special edition. Swap them out as soon as you buy one
Don't forget the atrocious infotainment system in the new one. I've been driving a standard 150hp Golf Mk8 since September of last year and the infotainment is so incredibly buggy that it's borderline unusable on a day to day basis. Apple CarPlay craps out and displays only a black screen at least once a week, driver aids like lane assist and cruise control disable randomly every other week, the infotainment freezes or boot loops, climate control is incredibly frustrating to use, etc. No OTA update or offline update at a dealership has mitigated these issues so far. The only way to get rid of these problems when they appear is to turn off the car, get out, lock it, and then wait a couple of minutes before trying again.
As a 7.5 owner, I’m glad to see the stock HP improvement on the MK8 but my car looks SOOO much better than that thing. If I had to, I would get an older one before the new model TBH

@Bryce Czirr I've not driven either, but from online reviews there were some slight differences in how the 7 and 7.5 drive. If I wanted an 'R' I'd go for a 7.5. The 8 being faster is what I'd expect. Why would it be slower?
I have a 7.5, but I love how the mk8 stock has a higher horse power now... only thing I don't like is the body. I prefer my 7.5 sooo much more. I guess maybe adding 5k into my 7.5 and it'll keep up with the 8

U can still turn off the soft limiter on the 7.5. By turning the ESC completely off (holding the button). On a manual, left foot on the clutch and rev! I suppose left foot on the break on DSG.
I have a 2019 R. It's fantastic. I could chop it in for a mk8.5....or I could do what I did; spend $850 on a stage Integrated Engineering 1 tune, and make it faster than the mk8.5. Job done.

The factory claims are crank hp and tq. The youtubers etc that have dyno'd the cars are giving you results at the hubs or atw. The factory results atw will be lower, say by 12-15% than their claims due to drivetrain loss of awd. Effectively the differences between factory and tested results are likely 50hp approx. Im constantly frustrated by idiots comparing dyno results and crank hp

I've done it in Real life,and the old A45 had no chance against our A45S.And that was with 4 of us and a boot full of shopping in the A45S vs 1 lad on his own in an A45. The old A45's gearbox doesn't help matters as it seems to be quite slow to react off the line if it's not launched.

8:20 Your driver in the MK7 clearly knows little about the difference between 20hp and 20Nm. From a roll, its all power to weight ratio, torque has nothing to do with it. From my experience, from a roll race of 40mph to 130mph, the difference in the amount of car lengths one is ahead is approximately 6hp per car length (at this weight car). So, if you were 5cars ahead at the end, then its a 30hp difference... and that's what I think is the difference, 30hp, not 20hp difference... this is provided the cars weigh the same... So, you have to factor in the extra weight of the two cars not being equal. Power to weight ratio says that for the mk7 at 300hp, the mk8 must have 314hp to be equivalent (4.6% heavier). Therefore, add 30hp to 314hp, not 30hp to 300hp... and we have 344hp vs 300hp. So, yes, its definitely waaay more than 20hp. 44hp more, not 20hp. Could be just 4cars ahead at then end of the race, so worst case 38hp difference. NUFF SAID!
Having owned both, the MK8 is so much better in almost every way. The only thing I can think of aside from the price which isn’t better is the boot bulk head which drops the boot height by about 2 inch, aside from that a world apart. Oh and the performance pack is a must
I’d love to see a Mk7 R vs Mk8 R vs. Mk7 GTI vs. Mk8 GTI drag race (all four together). If you could fit 8 cars in a race, it would also be awesome to have each represented by manual and DSG too. Also, I have not seen any information that says the Mk8 R has a locking diff up front. I assume if it did it would be the VAQ like what’s on the GTI, but all the info I can find on VW’s website suggests it has an open front differential with a brake based traction control system. Anyone confirm? Also, I could’ve sworn that I had seen videos of the new R not upshifting on its own?
Carwow really needs to have the person starting the race NOT do a countdown but simply drop their arm at a random time, otherwise Matt has an insane timing advantage OR has an inhuman reaction time.

So, you have to factor in the extra weight of the two cars not being equal. Power to weight ratio says that for the mk7 at 300hp, the mk8 must have 314hp to be equivalent (4.6% heavier). Therefore, add 30hp to 314hp, not 30hp to 300hp... and we have 344hp vs 300hp. So, yes, its definitely waaay more than 20hp. 44hp more, not 20hp. Could be just 4cars ahead at then end of the race, so worst case 38hp difference. NUFF SAID!

Having owned both, the MK8 is so much better in almost every way. The only thing I can think of aside from the price which isn’t better is the boot bulk head which drops the boot height by about 2 inch, aside from that a world apart. Oh and the performance pack is a must

I’d love to see a Mk7 R vs Mk8 R vs. Mk7 GTI vs. Mk8 GTI drag race (all four together). If you could fit 8 cars in a race, it would also be awesome to have each represented by manual and DSG too.
Also, I have not seen any information that says the Mk8 R has a locking diff up front. I assume if it did it would be the VAQ like what’s on the GTI, but all the info I can find on VW’s website suggests it has an open front differential with a brake based traction control system. Anyone confirm? Also, I could’ve sworn that I had seen videos of the new R not upshifting on its own?
Carwow really needs to have the person starting the race NOT do a countdown but simply drop their arm at a random time, otherwise Matt has an insane timing advantage OR has an inhuman reaction time.
yeah that 7.5 driver SUCKED at launching at the same time as the 8.. its like days went by and then the 7.5 driver was like "oh there is a race going on"

A simple ECU and TCU stage 1 REMOVES any lag on the 7.5 and puts it ahead of a stock 8.0.
Great race. I wonder if an easy stage 1 to ecu and tcu improves the 8 as much as the 7.5. My 7.5 does 12 flat with it...genuinely curious.
Yes mk8 will make slightly more power, it has a better turbo and stronger fueling system.
