I knew it was skate within the first 3 minutes. Halibut don't fight like that. Skate's are like a sheet of plywood suctioned to the bottom, which was very apparent to me. Halibut swim like a fish, and shake their head like a fish. This was obviously not a halibut right from the start.
I caught a similar Bat Ray on the *municipal pier,* the one in the backdrop, in 1971. A few observations: Why wear a mask out there? Using 10 lb test with a *hair razor* for halibut, a lure usually used for stripers? Opening the bale on the reel? Putting your fingers over the camera lens? *But, what do I know?* 😎🎣🎥👍
I was thinking Bat ray 🦇 I hooked a smaller one on other side of GG trolling on my kayak. I hooked it in the fin and it was towing me out deep. It fought like a 50 pound something. I finally had to cut my line.
I used to work on charter boats. The best way to lose a fish is to stand like a statue and not reel. We have to remind the fishermen to crank down and to keep reeling. Short stroke. Pull the rod and crank down. Keep cranking. This guy kept standing like a statue.
When you run into these pests best thing you can do is clip their tail barb immediately with a pair of pliers so no one gets stung. A sting can cause a toxic reaction and leave you with a painful burning bleeding hole that simply won't stop bleeding,. Then its a trip to the E/R room to clean the nasty wound and you end up on Cipro antibiotic for several weeks.
How about just being careful and using common sense? Clipping its tail barb is cruel and leaves the Ray defenseless. Can’t stand people like you. Lazy and cruel
That is barbaric. If you intend to keep it, then by all means cut the barb. If you intend to release it, don't remove it's only line of defense against predators. This is not a pest. It is an indigenous creature to the SF bay. With your mentality, you might as well kill all the bears in the woods so nobody can get mauled while encroaching on their habitat.
@@joshsircy7695 What do you think marine biologists do with rays for petting zoos? Also if a bat ray is being attacked by its predators the barb is not going to defend off the attack. Numerous shark species, notably hammerhead sharks feed on them as a primary food source.
@@terryberg A bat rays primary barb is not going to stop a predation from its S.F bay two primary predators( Seven gill and great white sharks). Sting rays also shed and regrow their spines on a regular basis. Killing all the bears? lol!!! fricking kook
jim bo Rays in a petting aquarium are fed and taken care of. They do not need to defend themselves from anything. There are no Hammerheads anywhere near the San Francisco Bay. Your point is completely irrelevant. I’m an avid fisherman and have caught hundreds of Bat Rays. The barb is at the base of their tail and they can’t whip you with it. I’ve never been stuck with the barb in all my handling of Rays for 30 years. If you don’t know how to handle a Ray or any fish without getting yourself hurt or hurting the fish then you have no business fishing for them. Like I said, you are lazy and cruel.
Knew it had to be a bat ray once I saw how long the fight was
That’s the greatest feeling in the world, and the moment of truth is when you hook into and eventually land a nice fish, and on shore.
Nice 😃👍🏼 🎣

Living dangerously with light tackle, it’s a lot more fun!
Nothing amazing about this footage. Loud wind noise, low quality video. Not amazing. Maybe "decent" but not "amazing".

That's a fukashima halibut, good catch

He's on 10lbs test. What more do you expect
Careful... that fish hasn’t been vaccinated! Who fishes out there with 10lb line😂😂
I do. It's more challenging.
Perch?
whoever was waiting for Halibut those people never caught one because Halibut don’t fight, easy pulling in
Nice job protecting his identity at the end😂
One part shows you west of Ft. Point pier then another shows you on other side? Tad confused or is it just me-
We were in between GGB and the SF Yatch Club, adjacent to building 937. Tight lines!
Line: Pucci golden gate 30# test
4oz weedless shad head
8” candybar slider squid color
Procure diarrhea gel
The elusive bat ray lives!
amazing? If amazing means unwatchable, then yes
Know how to hold the camera next time !
Bat Rays are common species you do not want to hook.
Bat ray!!! Ggggrrrrrrr
Fishing with a mask on 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂in the ocean
All that ,,, for a 5LB SMALL RAY????
THIS VIDEO SHOULD BE ILLEGAL,,,, STEALING LIFE , AND PRECIOUS TIME...
Come on now it shouldn't take that long to pull a fish in you trying to be BASS PRO
That was at least 50 pounds bat ray!
This is exactly why I don’t fish with bait ….!
He's afraid of catching covid from the fish wearing that 😷
Many people eat ray "wings",like fake scallops
Seriously dude, take the stupid mask off 😂🤣
All that work for a Sting Ray
FUN is the name of the game.
Learn to tie knots and you might have been able to get it in faster
You're slow huh

Sorry to me not amazing, and is actually a pest!!! Rather catch nothing than waste my time with a frickin ray!!!;
Oh boo hoo
Freaking clickbait!
This exactly why I stopped fishing with bait…!
