Rex RX-607Z walking foot machine review, threading, bobbin winding, sewing

  • Rex RX-607Z zig zag identical to Omega, Tuff Sew and Others. 1.5 amp motor. Super solid and easy to operate once you have the tension settings dialed in. No stitch length marks, is the only flaw of the machine, but I guess that is up to you. The cheapest portable walking foot machine for sale. Sews thick materials well. No base included, I had to build one out of 2x4's.

    I just got mine in. I bought it for the price and the amount of projects I plan on doing. I won't be doing this but for a few projects and didn't want to spend a 700-1000 for a machine. So first thing I did was take all the covers off test tighten all the screws took and oiled it over and over till all the black oils went away, ( metal and oil plus what ever the may have coated it for shipping across the ocean ( salt water ) ) I ran it for about 20-30 mins oiling it over and over. It started running smother now I will let it sit for a day for all the excess oil to drain away then wipe it down again. So this is a budget machine and you need to be thinking it's a budget machine. It may last years sewing a few things here and there or it could. Crap out in a few months. But either way it's still cheaper then paying someone todo what you can do on a budge setup.

    These machines are so underrated. I just got the Omega version, replaced the foot pedal with an old style analog and poured lead around the flywheel then machined it (8lbs now!). Works fantastic for the price. The friction clutch sucks so it's been disabled. I just rewind with the needle moving at zero position.Took a hook, bobbin case, bracket, and metal retainers from a 50 year old sears and they fit in perfect - and way better than the originals. Before the swap it would occasionally skip stitches on the bottom full out. Now it's hooking perfect every time.These machines will fit into a standard case of those old Singers.Even including upgrading to a Cuda Crank (Sail Rite Monster flywheel) everything was only 40% the cost of a basic LSZ-1 Sailrite.I don't think they're ideal machines for leather, but great for canvas, vinyl and denim.Cheers!

      It sounds like you really know these machines. I came across a Model 607 today in a pawnshop for $160.00 out the door. It looks new or without any scratches , but did notice the bobbin case was missing. From what you said they're the old universal cage so hopefully I can use that to get the price down some more and not be hurting. They give like a 7 day return policy so in 7 days I should know what I've gotten. The cheapest I seen them was $250 online. Is there anything I should check beside noticing the bobbin cage was missing?

    You ought to make video on setting walking foot timing. It is not completely like the nailrights. Also the presser foot bars screw holes are spaced further than rex. Takes some modifications. All metric threads.

    Why is it so difficult to find a decent walking foot machine for hobbyists? I have been searching on a definitive verdict on which one to buy to be able to sew, say 2 layers of 5 oz leather pieces on a regular basis. My recent buys have been a Pfaff 130, which I am trying to put together to make it work and test, and a Pfaff 1222e with a walking foot, which I am waiting to be delivered this week. What I am afraid of now is that both buys will not stand up to my requirements. So, for a hobbyist like me who wants to set up a start up small business, which is the best first walking foot machine I should buy? Thanks, in advance.

      Craiglist. Look for xn old industrial singer walking foot. I found a singer compound talking foot with a servo motor and a few spools of thread for $400 that will walk all over this rex machine.
      If you dont need a walking foot there are many industrial straight stich machines in the $200 range. Juki consew singer etc. These are typically production machines that will rip 1000 stiches in seconds wot.
      These old industrial machined will outlive your kids.

    Any idea why my thread keeps pulling out of the needle? I can't seem to figure it out!

    • @JeffDrumm
      @JeffDrumm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the first Stitch you always have to hold the top thread and the bobbin thread with your fingers for at least two stitches and then you can let go. That is just what happens especially when you have tension on the plates.

    • @cathysUtubeXOXO
      @cathysUtubeXOXO 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought this machine second hand and now I am fiddling with tension, etc.
      Thankfully, your video shows how to thread since the manuals way wasn't working.
      By the way, what do you usually keep your thread tension at?
      Thanks.

    • @JeffDrumm
      @JeffDrumm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cathysUtubeXOXO it depends on the material you are sowing to what tension you need, for instance I so a lot of very thick dense materials and keep my attention between 8 and 10, but if you are sewing something thin like lightweight silk or something you would want the tension very low around 3 or 4 maybe

    • @glockstitch

      Hola Kitty it’s just like any other sewing machine. On the hand wheel, there is a silver stop motion screw; while holding the hand wheel, grab the inner stop motion screw, rotate counter clockwise. It may be very difficult to do. But once unscrewed it disengages so you can wind bobbin.

  • @tp2315
    @tp2315 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are several errors and omissions in this video. First, all the hullabaloo thread path for winding the bobbin. Just create straight path for the thread and provide friction wit finger. Second, you don’t just wrap thread around the upper tension disk - you must wrap thread over the tension hook and under the check spring. Third, you need to be through the thread guide just above the needle on the needle bat. Forth, you need to thread the top thread through the hole in the foot. All in all, a pretty poor video - look for better. This guy is a hack. I’m surprised he can get it to sew. If he can, anyone can.

    • @JeffDrumm
      @JeffDrumm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely followed the manual for winding a bobbin but this machine was a piece of crap anyway, which is why I got rid of it. Husqvarna sewing machines do so much better and cost less. FYI, I sew for a living not sure what you do.
