    I've had this one's little brother, the Juki DU1181n. I sew a lot of marine vinyl on it, and it's my favorite machine in over 50 years of sewing. I don't need a compound feed--I have a Consew 227 cylinder arm, but it's really overkill for my bagmaking needs.

    Boy, @Alexander Dyer.
    I noticed that you were able to adjust the stitch length (direction important here) from, say, 2mm-to-9mm without having to hold down on the fwd/rev handle while rotating the round knob. For example on my JUKI 1541S machine : Increasing the stitch length (round knob) the fwd/rev handle will float up without any hand assistance, BUT, when Decreasing the stitch length (round knob) the fwd/rev handle WILL need some hand assistance (pre-load if you will) to allow the stitch length (round knob) to rotate clock-wise, thus decreasing the stitch length. Hope that made sense. I'm a bit confused.
    New JUKI 1541S owner. Great video too, thanks.

    • @AlexanderDyer
      @AlexanderDyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is ok to help the adjustment by pressing the reverse down to relieve spring pressure from the adjustment stop.

    I have a Jukki 1540 (I think. I bought mine new about ten years ago. Now you show a 1541 so I will have to double check next time i am in the shop). Mine has a reducer on it and while I really like it doing boat canvas, insulated denim coveralls etc. I find the arm really should be longer to better take advantage of the machines capabilities. My biggest gripe with it is the bobbin replacement. The Japanese must have really small fingers but my meathooks won't work in that little space! I have to do it from underneath as you show only I use a large 'L' shaped table so to get under it I have to get up and go around the twelve feet of table to insert the bobbin from the far side where I have a lighter outfeed table that I can move first. I have never been able to start a stitch with any of my machines without holding the threads down. Always learn something new. I didn't know you could fill the bobbins while working. Of course I have a couple of dozen that I fill at one time so I haven't needed that feature. Nice to know though. I did buy a full manual when I bought mine and it is pretty good not like the Chinglish we are now subjected to. Good video. Doug

    • @AlexanderDyer
      @AlexanderDyer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Speed is a function of the motor. Clutch motors tend to be very fast, that is how 'industry' likes their sewing; time is money. By changing out to a servo motor you can completely change the characteristic and behavior of any given machine. th-cam.com/video/lavkvsU5ltk/w-d-xo.html

    Walking foot is important if you want to sew kites or sailboard sails but for a different reason. Coated ripstop polyester is extremely frustrating to sew on a normal sewing machine because the feed dogs slip. It's a very light thin fabric with a feel more like plastic than cloth. Also dacron leading edges and nose webbing are pretty heavy duty sewing as well.

    True workhorse. Had mine for a few years; I personally think it's the best Upholstery grade Walking foot on the market. Although if I could do it all again I'd probably go for the 1508. My 1541 had the knob to adjust the Foot height (as seen on the 1541-7's) as well as the actual tension assembly from the 1508; but not all of the 1541's have that. It appears only the later model ones have both of these. The earlier 1541s have Tension assemblies that feature only one pretensioner which locks the user in at #69-#138 thread. I've gone as high as #277 on mine comfortably with a Sz24-25 needle. 1508 has the U-Bobbin also, which is noticeably bigger in person.

    Could you please share some details about the MOTOR you are running in this set-up? I have a good basic servo set up with my Singer 20u33, but it seems to lack power and punch when the going gets a little tough. Sometimes when trying to climb over a thick seam it will just stop dead in its tracks and shudder. Yours is quiet like a servo, but seems stronger and more undaunted.

    • @AlexanderDyer
      @AlexanderDyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have probably seen this video already. th-cam.com/video/lavkvsU5ltk/w-d-xo.html That is my go to motor (the servo). When you say that your machine "shudders" it sounds like something is slipping if I am following you correctly. The 20U is a drop feed and drop feeds have a tendency to peel out or not advance the material when they hit difficult areas like seams. Next time that happens see if your motor is actually stopped or is something else happening. Belt slip Maybe? It is hard to say from here.

    Hi! Thank you very much for your videos... I also own 1541 juki, it's excellent, but I found that it is much difficult to sew on it little curved things from thin car-upholstery leather, because of the walking feeding and large outer presser-foot which tries to flatten the material. Can you help me - which type of industrial machine should I try? I wanted to buy one post-bed roller and dog-feed machine, but someone told me it's not suitable for thin leather with "skived" edges - thread will pull it up and down... Well, maybe I should find 2-feeding machine like 1181 or another, with inner foot but replace outer foot with roller or small foot, I don't know. I hope my english is not too bad )) Thank you!

    So many choices! I am saving up for something like this and appreciate the time and effort you put into your very informative videos. Do you have any videos or thoughts on the this type of machine vs a cylinder arm machine? I have seen some guys use a table adapter to get the flat bed style out of something like the Techsew 2750 with an adapter. I would love to hear your thoughts and those of your audience. Thanks!

      Hey, I have the 2750pro and a couple Juki LU562 flatbeds. Honestly, I hardly ever use the table attachment, I mostly use the cylinder arm when necessary and mostly use the flatbeds, I find them easier to manage the material during sewing. Hope this helps! Cheers!

    I have one and I suggest you hold the thread to start, I love this machine but you have to watch to complete cycle of the needle wen you reverse to avoid problems. thanks for the video, that's a great machine!

    I was saving up for this exact model, I had done my research, checked prices and it was the one I was after. I was getting tired of waiting as I didn't quite have all the funds in order. Instead I bought a lesser-priced Consew 206-RB5, yeah, the first ones made in China, not Japan. It dialed in easily and has been a great machine. Fast forward, I ended up working for awhile at a place that had Juki 1541 machines, many of them. After sewing Cordura at work I would come home and work from my Consew. In the end, I ended up liking the Consew better. Both great machines though, I suppose it's what a person get's used to!

      The sellers can include the table and motor with the head for about $150 more. You have to have it for the machine anyway because it has an oil pan below it, plus it needs a motor.

    I own a Juki 1541. I am not positive which model I have because I don't know how to tell the difference between the 1541, 1541S or 1541 DNU. What am I looking for to tell the difference and of the 3 which is the best or the difference? I have had mine maybe 10 years. I would have to find the receipt to be sure when I bought it. I put a different motor on it because I can't drive that fast. I have been sewing 60 years now, learning new stuff all the time. I love my 1541. I would just like to more about what I own. If you can tell me the difference then I will know more about what my machine will do.

    How thin or light of material can it run? Or is it just for heavy denim, canvas and leather type material. I use a lot of polyester and cotton but want to do more with leather and canvas.
    Great video! Thanks!

      Can you? Yes. Is it ideal? Probably Not. I keep and old home sewing machine for my light material sewing needs, it is ideal. This video is about thread size but it applies directly to lighter materials that coincide with small thread.

    Thank you so much for such a fantastic video! I have been sewing for decades but after trying to sew a window in a sailboat bimini (consisting of marine sunbrella and plastipane) using my Husqvarna Viking, I realized I needed a heavy duty machine. I've used a Sailrite LSZ-1 machine that was able to handle heavy duty sewing thru many thick layers for sails, marine canvas, many layers including leather but it's always been a bit temperamental and cannot handle lifetime thread when sewing a zigzag. However, living on a sailboat means that having a portable machine is a must because I cannot have a permanent sewing location. Is there a portable version of the Juki? Or is there a different portable machine that would meet my needs?

    I have an old industrial juki LH515 which wasn’t stitching well. My husband and I spent hours threading and rethreading the machine and changing the tension but it still wouldn’t work well. As you would know, this is a twin needle machine so there are two bobbin cases. Well we cleaned one of them but forgot about the other. After cleaning the second bobbin case, the machine is now stitching beautifully. I am not selling it.
    My question is, how often do we have to change the oil? I have three sewing machines so I don’t use the juki often.

    Want your opinion on Juki 1508N and 1541. I make purses, bags etc., I have been using a New Home (now Janome). Its a work horse, but I really want to sew more with leathers, canvas, faux leather, vinyls. Would you recommend the 1508 or 1541.
    Also can you purchase them assembled, not sure I could do that.

    Nice.....but I’m sticking with my go to ADLER 267......it’s 35 years old....and cost a lot of money at that time....but sooooo reliable....thrashing it out every day.....only trouble it ever gave was a zip shoe broke after 35 years work....metal fatigue obviously......
    QUESTION.......IVE BEEN TOLD A SERVO MOTOR CAN BE FITTED BUT NOT A SYNCHRONIZER.....IN YOUR EXPERIENCE DOES THAT SOUND CORRECT???????TIA

      Great machine the 267. I am a big fan of the brand and I have an 867. You can put a needle positioner on your machine, the trick is the physical mounting of the positioner on the hand wheel. That part you will have to work out.

    Hello. I just watched the Juki 1541 video as I’m Thinking about getting one for making bags , some upholstery etc. However I do a lot of lighter weight sewing like quilt piecing, kids clothes and such. Will it work ok for the lighter sewing as well, as long as I have proper thread and needles? Thanks.

      I recommend that you keep a portable home machine for these types of projects and zig zag operations to go along with your triple feed sewing machine. Then you will be ideally setup for all your sewing needs.

    10:10 at what point in leather or vinyl does a small stitch become perforation? seems like with a small enough stitch the seam would just become a "tear here" point with some thread in it
