    Thomas, thank you for the very detailed and relaxed presentation on the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 . I have a 2005 911 cabriolet and always wished I had bought the 2016 GTS, then they switched to 4 cylinders and that ended that dream. Watched this video when it first came out, was so impressed I went to local Porsche dealership and ordered a 2021 Guards Red GTS. This was of course before COVID-19 closed everything down, but got the order in. They told me car won't arrive until March 2021 but that is okay, gives me something to look forward to next spring! Thanks again for all your reviews, very much enjoy them.

    What a terrific video about a magnificent car. Thanks Thomas and it was an added bonus to have Mark Webber take a few laps. Carmine red with the red instruments looked awesome. If I was in a position to chose, it would be a Crayon 6-spd Manual GTS 4.0 Cayman no question. I do like the Cayman for very long time.

    Excellent review Thomas. Great to introduce and bring in Mark Webber as well! My only request is that you do a side by side comparison of the GTS 4.0 PDK and GT4 PDK. I really wonder if the PDK versions of those would outperform the 911 Carrera S PDKs on a track. Very very curious. Thank you so much!

    PDK is available for $3730 compared to $3210 for the GT4. My build specs for the GTS 4.0 compared to the GT4 with the same options was less than $8K. Unless you're going with a minimal spec GTS 4.0, you may as well get the GT4.

      It's the elephant in the room right now. Not many people are talking about the direct comparison between this new version and the outgoing 4 cyl turbo in terms of power.... I think the in the real world the old car will be faster, even if it doesn't sound great haha

    Having had a 6cyl 987 with Fabspeed bypass exhaust I am now waiting for a 718T. Having driven several 718 cars I find the sound of the 4cyl different, naturally, but also pleasing. Besides there's no way I could swing the price of the GTS. The 987 2.7 was also gutless below 3000rpm and the 2.0 has an additional 60 hp. So I'm more than pleased and looking forward to the T.

    • @michaelschneider-

      +1. .. The 2.5l turbocharged Cayman S is the way to go at high altitude; 8200ft. .. The normally aspirated 6cyl's specific output suffers greatly at elevation. .. At Vail's 8K' elevation my '98 Carrera S (993) is a dog.

    Nice Autogefuhl microphone cover! :D Thank you for another great video! I've been thinking about a 981 or 718 Boxster to replace my 2.5L 986, but after reading some owner comments, I'm a little worried it's not as "open" as the original (lower seating and higher doors / windshield so less in the open air). I enjoy the 986's 5 speed Aisin transmission much more than my 996's 6 speed Getrag because of the crispness of the shifter... by applying just a light constant force on the shifter, it moves into gear right when the RPM is matched, and I can dump the clutch - the 996 6-speed has so much non-rotating friction that it barely has any shifter feedback. Even my 1969 912's very long shifter (with a newer 914 transmission) has good shifter feedback.

  • @WIR217

    I love your reviews Thomas, they are thorough and honest. I must admit that they help me in making my decision, that was 1.5 year ago when I bought the 718 GTS 2.5 PDK Boxster and 2 month's ago when I signed up for the new BMW M135i. I am so happy with my 4 cylinder Porsche, the 6 cylinder version would not have been an option. Firstly for its price tag and secondly it is priceless in Belgium to get a big engine on the road. For the 4.0l, I would in a life span of 10 years pay almost 40000€ and for the 2.5l approximately 8500€ and for me is 30000€ still a lot of money. Don't get me wrong, I get the fuss about big engines, but they are too expensive on the road. And you must admit the 4 cylinder isn't that bad :)

      I agree. I just picked up the 2.5 turbo and everyone complaining about sound is absurd. If you don't like it, change the exhaust. I'd that's the worst gripe from people, they should just stop driving. I've driven the 6 and the 4, and naturally, there's a difference, but not enough to make me not buy either.

      @autogefuehl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thomas, the correct and British term for rev matching is “double de-clutching” and especially rewarding if combined with the heel and toe technique although none of this is necessary anymore with modern synchromesh gearboxes in good condition🤓

      @@autogefuehl Porches are fun cars but way over priced and the dealerships in the US are into slam dunking customers. I had a 2018 718 CS, 2019 3RS and a 2018 2RS and I did not have that much more fun with the 3RS or 2RS to justify the price difference(s) over the 718 CS. For those interested in Porsches the 718 is good enough.....I got caught up in the monumental Porsche hype.

    Best Cayman yet. Minus Ceramic Brakes, minus Sports Bucket Seats (Sports plus adequate), Minus Black Wheels (just have 20in spider wheels), to reduce price. Manual vs PDK is a toss-up. If you are blessed to live somewhere with good winding semi-deserted roads, manual for sure. If you live in a big city and use it as daily commute, PDK. Particulate filters, and Cylinder deactivation in Normal-drive mode, should make-up some gap in CO2 emissions for the additional 2 cyls and the bigger Engine displacement.

    Excellent Review! You're always so detailed, but I suddenly realised that I didn't see where the hand-brake is! At 23:02 thanks for the "German lesson"! Loved the track sequence, the great driving, and your quick drift on the left-hander at 39:24. Great Mark Webber feature. Nice car, but very expensive! You ask which 718? I also liked the GT4 Spyder that AJ tested in Scotland last year! Many thanks Team.

    We're nearing the pinnacle of Porsche's take on the mid-engined internal combustion automobile. Very likely that they'll introduce electric versions next time around, so this will go down as a return to form and classic after the 718 turbo 4 cylinder.

    OK, so I have a deposit on a Boxster GTS 4.0 for delivery in March 2021. I had a 2006 Corvette Z51 I purchased new but sold about 6 years ago due to the manual transmission being so miserable in Atlanta traffic. So, I'm definitely getting the PDK. But, should I go for the 10mm drop or 20mm drop? I am mostly buying it because it's a go-cart for the street and it is effectively a tricked out convertible replacement for both my old 'Vette and a 2011 Harley RoadGlide I recently sold. However, I will likely track the car at most a total of 2-5 times during the 10+ years I'll own it. Instead, it will be a car to do errands in and enjoy driving in the mountains on weekends. I'd love for someone who's driven both to let me know which should I get for making the car enjoyable for the type driving I'll actually do. I did hear in a different video that the 10mm/20mm drop is a major difference, but I don't know if that means it's a LOT rougher and only a little more precise or a LOT less precise and only a tiny bit rougher....

    Hello!
    First of all, sorry for my English which is very bad (Google translator).
    I currently own a Boxster 981 2.7 and have ordered a GTS 4.0 due for delivery in early August, but I am in time to change something in its configuration and I want to ask you a question.
    I think that at the Porsche presentation in Estoril there were Boxsters with PASM suspension of -10 mm (normal) and -20 mm (sport). Do you remember what suspension the GTS red carmine was wearing in the race?
    I have a question with which suspension to choose, I will not take the car to circuits and its use will be touristy. I make long trips and I like to discover the regions leaving the big itineraries and sometimes taking small secondary roads and perhaps my preferred option should be the -10 mm one but I am afraid that the car may lose character. Will the 20mm be very uncomfortable? Another thing that worries me is that with the car so low it can rub against speed bumps and access ramps to garages.
    I would like to know your opinion. Can you help me? Thank you!

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Always take the higher suspension. Makes no sense in every day driving to lower it even more.

    Even given the absurd price, I think the 4.0 is still the best 718 to get, by far. It's more the ideal Porsche driving experience than the 2.5, which has totally different characteristics. I don't think the 2.5 is bad, by any means, but the 4.0 would definitely be my choice, although I'd go very light on the options to keep the price to a reasonable level. Excellent review, Thomas!
