I own a 718 Spyder. The GTS has a “similar” engine with the 4.0 flat 6 but the chassis is way different in the Spyder. The 718 Spyder has the same suspension as the GT4 (front end from the GT3 and rear that is unique to the GT4/Spyder). That is what makes that car so special. Top down driving in a race car like chassis can’t be beat. I traded my 911 in for it and don’t regret it one bit. The roof doesn’t bother me as I never put it up (southern living FTW).

I thought the roof on my 718 Spyder was okay....at first. Then I thought, yeah not great but I can live with it. Then I had to admit to myself I didn’t like it. And then after a while, I decided I fucking hated it! Then I drove the GTS 4.0 which was 98% as good to drive! I drove round putting the roof up and down, up, down, up down laughing out loud, I was so happy (I live in England). So I sold the Spyder and ordered a GTS, which then became the Boxster 25, which also has the short throw gearbox. Be here soon, can’t wait. So I guess my advice is save $20k, still looks great, drives sublime, won’t get on your nerves 😉👍

    • @justatemp2000

I think the problem is mostly England lol. Your weather is so unpredictable, raining one minute and sunny the next. In most areas of North America, we don't have this problem. Put the top down in the morning, put it back up in the evening. No big deal. Spyders are selling faster than GT4s, however, the GTS 4.0 is also selling well. Can't go wrong either way IMO.

More interior color options, more wheel options, automatic roof, ventilated seats, keyless entry are among the important things for me. The Spyder doesn’t offer any of these. The Spyder was an easy decision for me until I found out these details.

You're looking sharp, Nick! That touch of gray suggests a late career Cary Grant. I've always enjoyed your videos, with your enthusiasm for Porsche in particular. Thanks to you I leased first a 2017 M4 (I watched all your M4 videos) and then a 2019 Cayman S -- two cars with improved turbo performance but with controversially muffled sound. I still love my Cayman S because of all its great low-down grunt. I get that the sound itsn't tuneful, but to me it still sounds pretty Porsche, especially at higher revs, having driven a lot of the other turbocharged models, from the Turbo S on down. Obviously nothing like the howl of the GT3 etc., but I'm still happy with it. Anyway, keep up the great work! Always love your informative videos :)

Thanks for the great comparison between GTS and Spyder. However, on a straight road, driven at a maximum of 65mph, not much difference really becomes apparent either. The Spyder is a GT car with the front axle from the GT3 and rear axle from the GT4.That means it has a chassis that is inferior to the GT3 with better weight distribution and it in nothing except performance. The heavier GT3 needs the extra power because otherwise the extreme price difference between GT3 and GT4 or Spyder would not be explained. Due to the perfect aerodynamics it is possible with the Spyder without effort to drive open 155mph (if you can and it is allowed) and more without the vehicle becomes lighter. The GT chassis also shows its class especially in the curves and not least in braking. If you think after the test that the GTS is more or less the same car as the Spyder, you should drive it faster and especially in curves. ...yes, I am a fanboy but I have also driven both vehicles accordingly. 💪🍀😍Many greetings from Germany ☀️

Love my 718 Boxster S but crave the 4.0 GTS. If I had $138k to spend through, I would not buy the Spyder or any Boxster - I'd get a Carrera S cabrio or targa.

I’ll bet most people would prefer the livability of the gts over the spyder over the long run. Spend a few hundred bucks for a short throw shifter kit and enjoy the better ride quality of the gts and have $20k to spend elsewhere

This is a great side by side comparison, as I’m debating similar GTS 4 vs Spyder/GT3 vs 911

I prefer GTS 4.0, because it has the full range of options.

Now I know why over the past year or so there were soooo many 981 Spyders for sale: people were getting rid of them and buying this 4.0 GTS for not a lot more money, better engine and, most of all, an EASY top to put up and take down. Makes sense now!

Is the clutch a lot lighter than the 981? The 981 had the heaviest clutch i've ever felt by a long margin - kind of put me off combined with the long gearing. Made me question if I wanted the manual.

Nick, thanks for respecting that these are new cars that someone will be spending big money to purchase. I'm not sure about the Boxster, but my Macan GTS has a 2,000 mile engine break-in period.

Just take the GTS 4.0 in Gentian Blue (that colour really is an antidote to daily worries) and enjoy actually getting over speedbumps and staying dry in a sudden downpour.

Thanks Nick. I’ve ordered a 718 GTS 4 (traded my great five year old 991.2 Cabriolet) - no chance of getting a Spyder as they have gone in Australia. Picked midnight blue (like my 991) with burgundy/black interior. Btw - I’m an old grey haired guy!!

It is a shame that the 2.5 GTS is so hated, but it was a huge mistake to put a 4 cyl in the GTS, which is supposed to be a significant step up from the S. That said, I would absolutely own a 2.5 GTS if the price was attractive enough. Sure, the sound would bother me at first, but I'm pretty sure I'd get over that pretty fast given the outstanding performance.

Given how people like Subie rumble, it has its charm too. Tho not for the it cost. It could be an rntry model for 45-55k $ new, not for 80-90k $

    Hi Nick,
I'm glad you're back. I was beginning to think you were staying in New Zealand. What's not to like? Porsche videos and your particular brand of humor thrown in ( "the turd in the bowl") for good measure.
