How Jordan Poole Had a Rise And Fall In Just 4 Years! Stunted Growth

  • Jordan Poole in the 4 years prior to this season had the chance to be whatever he wanted to be in the NBA. His stats across the board was rising every season, and he won a championship in just year 3, on a team he could fit perfectly between 3 hall of famers. The Warriors have been the best team in the league the past decade and Poole was their young splash brother, who’s game was just what the Golden State Warriors needed. In 21-22 his game seemed like one any team would love to have as a featured guard, cause if he could average almost 20 points per game, shoot nearly 37% from 3 and lead the league in free-throw percentage over his teammate Steph Curry, who’s done it 4 times in his career, imagine what he could do with his own team. The NBA world and its fans finally was given the chance to see that scenario play out, when the Warriors traded him to the Washington Wizards summer 2023. In a down year for the Golden State, Poole Averaged a career high 20ppg in 22-23, good for 3rd on the team in scoring for the second year in a row. With a great mindset, and understanding the ideal situation he was in, the sky was the limit for the young point guard, only 24 years old, 23 when the Warriors finally gave up on him, realizing he was more damaging to the team than helping them move forward. Poole might just be shipped out of Washington, possibly even before the trade deadline 23-24, which would have to be the fastest any team has gone from viewing a player of their first real building block at point guard since John Wall. A position in the NBA not as easy to fill as it may seem, and one Poole is finding out for the first time in his career, isn’t any easier for him to transition into. I would like to see you do Ronald "Flip" Murray. I remember that one season when Ray Allen went down with the Supersonics at the beginning of the season...him and Rashard Lewis was balling out... Flip was leading the league in scoring for the first part of that year... I thought after him showing what he could do, he would get a chance on another team to shine...but somehow he fizzled out really quickly. What happened to him? Let's talk about it...

    JP would’ve had the keys to GSW after Steph retired but he messed it up when he didn’t listen to any of the OGs, Coach Kerr, and wanted to have same treatment as Steph, Klay, and Dray.
    But what JP doesn’t realize the treatment Steph, Klay, and Dray has is from hard work, dedication to their craft and team, and winning championships for over a decade; that treatment isn’t given to anyone but given to those who put in the time and effort to build their team up.

    • @seasonaldepressioncomics434
      @seasonaldepressioncomics434 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Ironically, the OGs are the ones holding the Warriors back. Dray and Klay, really, but Steph enables them. Even Kerr is kinda phoning it in this season, with the bad rotations, hell, even I knew you foul Chet in those final seconds. Looking back on 2021-22, there was no reason for Poole to go to the bench for Klay other than past accomplishments and feelings and that's where the problems really began. I'm a Bay Area Sports fan, you can throw 4 rings and all the records in my face. The 49ers cut Super Bowl winning legends like Ronnie Lott and Roger Craig early. Even Jerry Rice got cut. Now the Warriors have the same record and problems as last year, with an older team and no solution other than making a trade that definitely will involve Chris Paul, but might involve Klay or Dray. Literally both Poole and the Warriors are worse off now.

    • @arcadion448
      @arcadion448 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Absolutely not. Warriors would've kept JP had he shown improvement during his 4th year - but he regressed significantly. Everyone (even Green) knows that Green's days are numbered. Given a choice with an ever improving JP and an aging Green would you choose Green? Hell no! Between two players regressing, it's an easier choice to keep Green than Poole. Had Poole shown any improvement, Warriors would've done the same thing Lakers did - ship Shaq (e.g. Green) away.

    • @seasonaldepressioncomics434
      @seasonaldepressioncomics434 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      And what happened year 4? The punch and not having a defined role. He had to come off the bench, start, playmake, score. Nobody is gonna thrive or grow with no consistency or definition in their role. That on top of the vets telling him to get over getting socked in the face. Of course they chose Green. They're gonna waste Curry's golden years while Dray and Klay age infinitely more rapidly than Steph will, but hey. @@arcadion448

    • @seasonaldepressioncomics434
      @seasonaldepressioncomics434 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You saw the growth he made when he had a defined role in an environment that let him thrive. He plays his role in last year's toxicity, but the Warriors for sure had a hand in the toxicity with how they tried to sweep everything under the rug to appease the vets. Now the vets have the exact same record as last year with none of the scapegoats. @@arcadion448

    Real talk: the style of basketball that the NBA plays did guys like Poole dirty.
    In eras passed hot and cold guys who are momentum scorers like Poole, Klay and many others were used as offball threats. When they are on, they are on, but when they are cold then they either have something else to bring like Klay did before the injury or they can be benched.
    In today's NBA though, if a player can even score a tiny bit every single NBA team is like "you're our franchise star and were gonna let you have the ball for 90% of the game and you can chuck up whatever stupid bullshit you want with no consequences.
    Coaches don't coach anymore. That's the issue with guys like Poole.

    Jordan Poole is literally what every team fears will happen when a young player gets money and everything goes to their head. I feel like Jordan Poole is the example people will bring up when they say young players are just tryna get a contract and stop trying. And I feel like that discredits a lot of people. A lot of young talent will have good seasons, get a good/massive contract and will try to improve I feel like 80-90% of players do that, but then there’s Jordan Poole type of players who become super arrogant, and I do feel like the 2022 ring and him playing a decent role in it, did that to him, and made alongside a little bit of an CTE from Draymond and BAM, you’ve got modern day Jordan Poole.

    I told people when JP3 became the focal point of the offense things would change, we would see if he TRULY had star power. Those teams have tape on him & can focus on his weaknesses, vs when he was with GS Steph, Klay, Dray & the culture of the team could cover up his shortcomings. I remember those same idiots saying he was going to better than Steph during that championship run in 2022 lmaooo I say all that to say in 2023 he should've been the starting SG and Klay relegated to 6th man. This entire thing could've been avoided (Along with Dray hitting him), he WAS the better player between the two. I think GS are still holding on to what Klay used to be and not what he currently is.

    When a guy like kuzma is the most consistent scorer in the team you know something wrong. He has all the tools to be the main guy talent wise but that’s why intangibility is worth a lot to teams when it comes to basketball. You can have all the skills but if you don’t have the right intangibles then what’s the point? In the end a player like that is a waste of potential and not worth the investment. I hope he gets over this and humbled himself to the type of player he was before the championship, because what led him there is definitely what can help him thrive in the future. It’s honestly just disappointing seeing someone so talented and unique lose themself to their own ego.

    I always like to back and watch stories on my favorites players after somtime has passed.
    Two reporters who write for the Athletic and follow the Wizards wrote an article back in December. They said the video of Poole not paying attention to his coach in a huddle was a fake. Apparently the video was edited to make it look like he wasn't following along in the huddle.
    They went back and watch the actual game footage of the huddle and Poole did pay attention. They also said Poole was upset during the footage but it was because he made a mistake on the previous play that allowed Mikal Bridges to score.
    A few months ago they fired the Wizards coach. The new coach moved Poole to the bench so he could be the backup PG behind Tyus Jones. Almost immediately we've seen an improvement.
    Tyus has been injured for the past month and Poole has been the starting PG and has averaged 22ppg, 8 assists and 4 rebounds over his last 15 games. The team has him working with development coach David Vanterpool who is responsible for developing Damien Lillard and CJ Mccollum plus the Wizards new Head Coach is development coach Brian Keefe who is responsible for developing Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Brandon Ingram, and Shai Gilegous-Alexander.

    Even if Poole don't become a multiple time all-star and all that, if he checks his attitude even a bit he could at least end up being like a Kevin Martin or one of those guys that just comes off the bench for 20 but got a poor +/-.
    Im a lifelong Warriors fan so seeing him implode was rough, he would do some absolutely amazing stuff then have like two three terrible turnovers to lose a game. A perfect example is that game he took a couple horrible shots and almost cost u the game and even made Steph throw his mouthpiece and get ejected but then after causing Steph to get ejected Poole hit a buzzer beater to win the game

  • @Kagemusha08

    The Wizards are trying to tank anyways but even when you tank you still want to build strong team culture that will carry over to when you hopefully draft elite prospects. That shortens the timeframe until you can become contenders, like what Houston and the Magic seem to have pulled off. Having one dude clown around and piss everyone else in the lockeroom off is the worst way to build a culture.
    Hope Wes Unseld and the rest of the Wizards can get through to him and try to get him to grow up but like you said, it ain't looking good. It's always easier to get guys to change and mature when they're coming up, not after they got a big contract and have already won a ring.

    Kg out of his mind if he thought he would lead the league in scoring. Now he thinks he should be out of the league after a sideline issue. He’s a great scoring option but not a leader or star player yet. The kyrie comparison is outlandish, he didn’t wanna sit and wait for lebron to leave so he left first. The wizards are terrible either way if I was him I would ask to leave.

    Don't really see players come from there and turn up in other places, even the core roster wouldn't do well in other places
    Draymond would've burned out
    Klay would've degressed earlier
    Curry would still be Curry but probably with the 60+ win type years
    Everyone else was an accesory
    You go there to become part of the team, similar to the Spurs, not to learn how to get a fat contract somewhere else

    He is closer to Jimmer Fredette than Kyrie. Poole's game is fools gold: flashy and looks good from afar but is ultimately worthless. Everyone got caught up in his flashy moves and Curry-esque shooting during that championship season, but if you dive deeper, that single season is the outlier and how he's playing now is his norm. He isn't a particularly good shooter on any level, he isnt a good playmaker, and he is a cone on defense. You couple that with the entitlement that he seems to have and we are looking at the next Chinese star

    • @thestylemind4922
      @thestylemind4922 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So what are his flashy moves and Curry-esque shooting then? Did all that stuff just come out of nowhere? He clearly has skills. Wasn’t like he was hot for a couple of games. He averaged 20 for a whole season. He’s coming around. Those skills just don’t disappear like that.

    • @jayjonah83
      @jayjonah83 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thestylemind4922 seriously? There's scores of players that play phenomenal for a season and then completely fall off, Especially if it's a contract year. Poole is flashy not effective, and the odd fans of his seem to disregard that his 20 ppg were wildly inefficient and he cannot guard a door. The following year, this season, he's showing to be that same player that he was before and after the championship year, a glorified g league player

    • @thestylemind4922
      @thestylemind4922 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jayjonah83 all due respect you sound more like a fan than someone whose played basketball IRL or someone who knows how to scout. How you don’t see his talent is beyond me. He’s averaged 27 over his last 3 games by the way. He’s not a g-league player. He is a borderline all-star talent.

    • @jayjonah83
      @jayjonah83 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      While I'm not going to act as if 20 ppg in the NBA is an easy feat it's about the efficiency of those 20 points and whether it contributed to winning basketball (spoiler: he isn't, and it does not). See I watch full games wire to wire, and it's there where you can see how a player actually performs over the course of the game, not during the 7 minute TH-cam highlights. But since you want to confine his performance to the last three games let's go just a bit deeper.
      In the loss to Milwaukee he scored 30 points, on 26 shots, they lost by thirteen, he was a -26. 1 assist to zero turnovers. Not efficient, not a playmaker. 2nd worse defensive rating (146 vs 147) on the entire team
      In the loss to Charlotte he scored 24 points on 21 shots, they lost by only three but he was a -13. Two assists to 3 turnovers. Not efficient, not a playmaker, far and away the worst offensive rating of the starters (101 vs next lowest at 127) third worse on the team
      In another loss to Milwaukee he scored 26 on 20 shots, 1 of 6 from 3pt, this time he was only a minus 3. 7 assists to only 2 turnovers this time. Still not efficient but a better playmaker. He was also tied for the worst defensive rating at 129
      The team is substantially worse with him on the court than off of it and the numbers show it. Offensive rating on: 107.1 off: 120.8
      Opponents offensive rating on: 128.4 off: 113.4
      That's a whopping -28.7 when he's on the court.
      The numbers match the eye test. Yeah I'm 'just' a fan but I know what the fuck I'm talking about. it's hard to take your criticism seriously when you first quote his ppg (only in the last three games mind you) as thee indicator of talent and then follow that up with saying he's a borderline all star talent. It shows me that whatever level of basketball you may have played, you don't understand the game hardly at all

    • @thestylemind4922
      @thestylemind4922 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jayjonah83 I see where the disconnect is. You’re looking at things from an analytics standpoint, I’m looking at it from a skill standpoint. You can’t teach a lot of what Jordan Poole can do. That creativity is developed by him. He is not a g-league talent. He is an all star talent. He can learn to pick his spots and be more efficient and give more effort on D. It’s very difficult to be great on both offense and defense. He’s currently on the worst team in the NBA and he is being keyed on now. He will figure it out just like he did with Golden State. He’s too good not to.
