Trey Burke Is Why There’ll Never Be Another Allen Iverson! Stunted Growth

  • To me Iverson is the hardest player to recreate, and imo there’ll never be another player you could compare to Allen, in play style that can have the same or better success, because the league is just so much different when Iverson took it by storm with moves, a look, and personality never before seen. A look, personality and even game that wasn’t always accepted and or championed by the NBA. But he was and is one of the greatest to ever do it, even without a championship. Second to Jordan as my all time favorite player. I just knew there could never be another player like Iverson, whose game I’d absolutely love watching. Then comes Trey Burke. A player that shows you just why the Iverson game style, wouldn’t work in today’s NBA. Shockingly Trey Burke’s game style evolved into what could be a splitting image of Allen Iverson’s, he even eerily resembles him physically, making me wonder, why isn’t Trey Burke able to have the same success in the league. What happened to Iverson’s second coming, and why with the same style, he didn’t work out like expected. Trey Burke Is Why There’ll Never Be Another Allen Iverson! Stunted Growth

    Asked for this ages ago and glad it's done 🙌🏾. But have to disagree with AI comparisons, at least initially. Burke is neither as quick nor as athletic as Iverson was; his shifty game allowed him to beat people at UM but didn't give him enough separation in the pros to dominate. He also tried to score his way thru NBA games instead of being a more balanced PG. Was once compared to Chris Paul in college but just became a one-note scorer in the pros. Definitely Stunted.

  • @nbarealtalker
    @nbarealtalker 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Excellent video! But I respectfully disagree with your take on how AI’s original play style wouldn’t work today. While advanced stats would probably still hate him, the floor is so open now. Defences would be leaving shooters pretty wide open if they tried to collapse the paint to take him outta the mix. Could easily see him dominating with his driving and penetration with either way less guarded lanes around the hoop or with a newfound plethora of passing options on the off chance a defence would rather isolate on his ability to create defensive breakdowns. Assuming there would roughly be a balance between the two for defences, I think pretty much all of AI’s numbers go up. And that’s assuming he doesn’t even bother working on his notoriously streaky long ball. He bumps that up to anything even touching 34-35% and I think we se some peak Harden numbers outta AI in todays game on a seasonal basis because nobody could keep up. Look at what Steph Curry did during his peak. Take away the shooting ability but add about 15x the speed to running off all those back cuts and low post screens while Bubba runs semi circles around the baseline and you’ve got a near unstoppable force on the court.

    Ok the big big difference is I’d say athleticism plus MAJOR ball handling and passing plus play making that’s a hole lotta difference. I will concede they’re play style is extremely similar, AI was just a different beast you can tell in the video he just created so much space he was much more fluid with the ball

    I've said this once and I'll say it again.... the NBA is QUANITY over QUALITY

    Trey Burke is a "dime-a-dozen" player
    QUANITY over QUALITY

    I’m confused, because I can name at least 5 modern-Iverson’s we’ve seen so far. Kyrie, Kemba, Burke, Lou Will, and Jamal Crawford. It’s the same thing. Scoring guards, 3 of which are barely 6ft, who are incredibly crafty with the ball, and bring little else outside of that skill. In a modern, more talented league, these are the absolute best possible scenarios for an Iverson 2.0. There isn’t a more obvious example because most teams are no longer foolish enough to put all their faith in an undersized guard.

    Iverson played defense for one and the spurs in the mid 2000’s showed teams how to play better basketball than just passing it to inefficient bucket hunters. It’s not about multiple stats it’s about advanced stats becoming prevalent.

    I think the major difference is allen iverson waa probably the fastest player from end to end from 1998-2003 ish when wade and bron entered the league. I think he's speed advantage made it easier for him to create space for jumpers and get to the rim. He essentially would get to open spots in the floor and raise up before talker defendera could catch up. And another thing, todays game has so many skilled players that an Allen Iverson type player would have to share the ball offensively a lot more. He'd be surrounded by a lot of shooters and guys who can also create their own shots which is kinda the opposite of what Allen iverson had in his prime where everything pretty much ran through iverson. So burke would've needed tp be in the upper echelon of speed, faster than guys like prime Westbrook/fox in order to replicate the advantage iverson had with his speed. Then of course the ultimate green light to have games where he can shoot 7-27, 11-31, or 8- 35 without beinf benched the next game. Kyrie is probably in that realm of having the greenlight, but he doesn't have the super speed advantage but he makes up for rhe inferior athleticism with superior ball handling to create his space. So burke would've either needed the speed or supreme ball handling to have the advantage over defenders. Also iverson regularly got a lot of steals, and I don't see burke having that type of ability , so thats another area where he somewhat fell short. So in order to replicate Iverson's play style and success, you need to be the fastest in the league, have the best handles in the lague, and have the ultimate green light to shoot as much as you need to win games. And also be on a team where your teammates rely on you to get them open and create open looks for them, while also leading the league in steals.

    My thinking is that Trey in comparison to AI’s raw athleticism there is no comparison. AI was a multi-sport talent and probably could’ve went to the NFL. I was a big Trey guy but he’s just not even in the realm of that type of athlete. Super skilled though.

    Nobody objectively was equal nor better as a traditional ball distribution, conventional point guard then Magic Johnson . Magic Johnson 19 points per game career avg is the second highest scoring career avg as a point guard in NBA history,only to Oscar Robertson 25 per game avg . Magic could have easily equaled Oscars avg if he didn't have a still lethal Kareem Abdul Jabbar on his team ,magic sacrificed his personal scoring for the overall benifet of the teams success. Context please. Jamal Wilkes ,James Worthy ,Byron Scott Michael Cooper, Bob McCado,, also were superb scoring options that magic structured his game to adjust accomendating his legendary passing ,lethal scoring combination.skills into making the lakers fast break offense unstoppsble .

    I would argue the Jazz completely screwed his development, as well as Dante Exum's. They drafted Burke, who finished 3rd in rookie of the year voting (in a historically weak year, mind you), averaging roughly 13 points and 5 assists to 2 turnovers. Not great, but not awful. Literally the next year they drafted Danted Exum and had them split starts. Completely screwed both of their development. Like if you've figured Burke isn't the guy after one season, fine. But then go all in on Exum. Don't stunt both of them.
