About Narcosis:
Narcosis is a survival-horror at the sunless depths of the Pacific Ocean: Stranded on the seafloor with low light and few tools, an industrial diver takes desperate steps to surface before his oxygen - and sanity - give out.
Narcosis, conceived as a student project, is a first person survival story that follows an industrial catastrophe, from inside a half-ton, high-tech dive suit - a “walking coffin." The funny thing about this horror game is that, unlike others, if the monster catches you, your suit with be ripped apart and the pressure will immediately squash you for a quick painless death.

this is my first time watching this so what does the monster look like?
AJ Batenga Well, the monsters per say are just deep sea wild life that don't like you very much. Squids, spider crabs, the like. A quick google search will show you those ugly fuckers need to stay down there. But the main threat is more or less that you're hallucinating from drugs (hence the name of the game) and and are basically taking a jump scare littered drug trip while constantly trying to keep yourself from running out of oxygen.

fun fact: narcosis can also refer to hydrogen or nitrogen narcosis, which is a psychotropic state that can be induced by breathing in hydrogen or nitrogen mixtures respectively when deep-sea diving - which is probably what's happening here since I doubt this dude is actually taking drugs lol

it could also be due to the methane, they're mining it so I'm assuming exposure to it would be common, and it would also put a person into a state of narcosis...
@@EvakCorleone but water and oxygen molecule is smaller than methane, so if methane leaks into the suit, then both breathable air would leak out of the suit and water would get into the suit. analogy a space suit. if it can contain O2 inside a suit, it won't let in any vacuum :D so to say
Also Narcolepsy, the word “narco” in these words are Ancient Greek means either Stupor, a state of Unconsciousness or Sleepy... and Lepsy means either a Seizure or a Fit.... not sure what the “sis” in Narcosis means though, lol

Hey IGP, I love your videos, but I just wanted to toss my hat in and let you know that the name "Narcosis" is most likely referring to Nitrogen Narcosis, a term for the effect of breathing (particularly nitrogen and oxygen) at depth while diving. Nitrogen Narcosis provides similar effects to being drunk, such as euphoria, misreading information, and eventually hallucination and decreased mental/physical control.

Indeed - we met them at a few indie show and tell events; turns out their office is right up the street from some of us. It's a lovely and unique game - and, like Narcosis, started as a student project - give it a try, if you haven't already!

The Japanese spider crab is found unsurprisingly near Japan in the more sandy parts of the continental shelf between 50 (during mating season) and 600 meters. So while he is pretty deep in the ocean he can't be too deep. Also the spider crab tends to not hunt preferring to scavenge so you don't have to be scared of them in real life. Squids on the other hand are not so friendly and their beaks could easily break a deep sea suit

The game sort of reminds me of Layers of Fear. Anyone else notice how the two games share the weird feeling of hallucinations almost the same way with weird puzzles and encounters.

Narcosis could also refer to the Diving term / medical issue Nitrogen Narcosis, where bubbles of nitrogen in their bloodstream (due to using compressed air) swells and can block or rupture said vessels.
But it's probably the one you're referring to.

this game is pretty awesome so far. it's like subnautica on drugs. id love for you to finish the play through so we can see the end of the game

Hello IGP! I just wanted to point something out for you that most people miss:
If you take one of the lifts in the shuttle bay to the upper level, you'll find a room filled with crabs and lots of body parts. Please try and collect the ID card in this room - a lot of people miss it, and so far I haven't been able to find any good videos where it's found.

Narcosis may refer to:

1. Carbon dioxide narcosis, carbon dioxide retention leading to a reduction in the hypoxic drive.

3. Nitrogen narcosis, an effect of diving deep with nitrogen.

Likely the reason you are able to remove the green tank is because it could be a refill tank. The suit could maybe have an internal oxygen storage system and you are using the extra tanks to refill that reserve. Well, I guess in that case the bodies wouldn't have full tanks on them, would they? Unless, that is, they were using it as a spare reserve.

The word narcosis refers to an actual condition that deep sea divers can experience when the concentration of nitrogen builds up in their bloodstream. It is known to cause great pain and hallucinations.

This is kind of odd that it's a horror when you realize that most of the things he's seeing are symptoms of Nitrogen Narcosis. (Hence the name) Breathing pretty much any gas at high pressure can effect your body in a variety of ways including tunnel vision and hallucinations.
(I used to have a 21 and under diving permit.)
This is one seriously awesome story-driven game and the mind tricks are near Jedi level.
Plot twist: The squid grabbing you from behind isn't trying to kill you, they just want a hug, on your head, with their beak, and they wanna break through

Narcosis is something that divers get from a few diff ways. From sat diving and having a bad mix or from a quick change in pressure either up,or down. The diver will feel drunk or confused.

The title basically tells you why you are seeing everything that you are in game lol. As a certified diver you learn that that while diving at 90-100+ feet you will experience nitrogen narcosis. It is caused by how gases react to being under pressure at that depth. So this is a very real thing, just maybe not as extreme as the game makes it.

What if your character is still on the ocean floor at the beginning of the game and you are dying from lack of oxygen and the whole rest of the game is a dream his brain is making because it's starving for oxygen.

A smart ploy the developers could've added at the start contact with the others.
This would give them a false sense of friendship and THEN throw them into an isolated storyline afterwards.
