UBS hired engineers to tear apart and analyze BYD's electric car. Here is what they learned.

  • UBS launched a project that would tear down and study electric vehicles from suppliers around the world. In September of 2023, they took apart the Seal, a high-tech offering from BYD that is aimed at the mass market.
Their findings are bad news for legacy carmakers, especially in Europe.

As the largest oil importer, China will unswervingly develop electric vehicles, even though the West still insists on ICE vehicles.
Like China, many countries in the world are short of oil. Even if there is no environmental pressure, people will be happy to buy electric cars.

Working hard was the only way out and 50 years later, the Chinese are caught up and most live a decent lifestyle. So unless European countries realize and admit this fact and are willing to roll up their sleeves now. Give up some vacation time and put that towards making new stuff and charge less to sell to the rest of the world, I can't imagine the trouble they'll be in in 5 years.

While it's easy to put the blame on leaders, the ultimate cause of the issue lies within the culture. It's not like nobody see the trouble coming. It's because people who don't want to give up their greed and comfort. Open bribery (also known as election) every 4 years doesn't help. If people want easy money, they will vote for someone who promises an open check. Simple as that.

We were told in the 90ies that outsourcing was the solution for improving productivity. You would take a component calculate its cost of building it in-house and then bid potential suppliers for acquiring the component. It was the mantra that the cost of outsourced components were lower.
Then a company would lower the price every year, untill only a few suppliers remained.
The result is Europe and the US. Thousands of workers on the street, never finding a reasonable job again. Despair on the one side and gleefullness on the other because the managing class was praised by the shareholder and rewarded.
People knew it was immoral, politicians bought the ideology or were simply bought and now Europes winners of them are enjoying their money and the next generation cannot compete. How come?

Outsourcing is bigger profits for lesser work. lesser work means lesser employees. Lesser employees mean bigger paycheck and bonuses for the big bosses.

The unspoken issue in the ev craze, is that there's a basic disconnect in an assumed demand (which may not materialize despite government mandates) and the electricity required to phase out all IC vehicles. The basic infrastructure required to support recharging is not in place now, nor can be delivered within the next 10 years. This is because in order to generate the electrical energy to replace all the gas for our road ways will require an additional 10,000 to 20,000 power generation plants with the necessary distribution networks. This massive reinvention of our electrical grid would rival the response of the US military-industrial complex following WW2. America went from have 4 aircraft carriers at the start to delivering an aircraft carrier every month within 2 years. And that was when the US recognized the threat. But this aspect of a required link in the ev revolution is NOT recognized thereby not discussed or even on the list of issues needing attention. One solution that will not work is fantasizing that wind and solar can even be considered. NG power generation is frowned upon because it's oil based and that leaves nuclear. Nuclear is an option, but the enviro activist hate nuclear more than coal. So good luck BVD, build for car lots sitting full of unsold, not in demand product.

It sold the entire year's production within the first 24 hours of the launch inside China alone. There are car manufactirers bringing out cars fitted with Sodium ion battery, solid state battery while others are concentrating on self drive, long range battery, fast charging etc, etc.

EVs, and particularly hybrid models, can be highly beneficial in both electricity-abundant and electricity-constrained regions, offering backup power source, efficiency, and flexibility that traditional ICE vehicles cannot match. This backup power capability is a major advantage of hybrid EVs over traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in areas with unreliable electricity. The battery can provide a crucial safety net and ensure mobility and continuity of supply is maintained even when the grid fails.

I have heard that some insurance companies will not insure some EVs (or places where EVs are garaged) because, particularly the Chinese cars, have a propensity to spontaneously combust. Even the batteries that merely malfunction, and not totally destroy the car, are not easy to diagnose and repair. However, their designs do enable the batteries to be built cheaply. Fire departments in the USA have to invest in special equipment to fight EV fires. I understand that Tesla batteries that lose a cell are much easier to diagnose, limit damage, and repair but I do not know if this is true of European and American EVs. This report seems to concentrate entirely on cost to produce so I guess UBS' concerns stop after the sale.

Takeover of the global car market already happened in the 70's and 80's under the Japanese producing a cheaper, higher quality product. Sure it can happen with EVs 😊

Buy on price, pay twice. The long-term overall cost of BYD, or any BEV, is not receiving the level of scrutiny that in needs. A lot of EV buyers will learn the hard way . . .

I am hearing in the U.K. that when cars made in China and sold here are O.K. until there is a warranty claim. This becomes a problem when the fault is not rectified quickly. Is there any other car mechanics around the world having this issue ?

I'd be interested to know what sort of "after sale support" will be available around the world. Buying a car that you struggle to maintain is not a solution.

The West once had vertically integrated industries. But in the name of unlocking shareholder value sold off all the non-core industries. What was the result? Higher cost products that are difficult to integrate and run like garbage.

Are you meaning Boeing that has had already 2 crashes this year, on top of the blown-away airplane door, and a blown-up toilet storage pool for "that thing" amid air?

BYD's highly competitive & successful vertical integration is a first class argument against globalized supply chains. Maybe western economists were foolish to evangelize globalization & outsourcing? The end result has definitely produced winners & losers, and now one only has to check the scoreboard to see what happened.
In any case, China was brilliant to fully utilize all the benefits of globalization while minimizing the liabilities to their own domestic economy & national sovereignty. Well played!

Do your home work and research and you would find that BYD is the last car one should ever buy. The so called growth of BYD is deeply over stated and there are reports that BYD is staging cars in vacant fields in China because they really are not selling and are having serious fires with the EVs. Some reports are saying that in Europe will start restricting imports because of the number of quality reports.
