As a 30 year long all year round rider, this is a whole new world to me. This is serious. All the critics aside, you are serious about cleaning your bike and I will upvote you for that. +1
I know this is an old video but it’s still clearly relevant today. People have the idea that since WD40 breaks down rust it must break down everything it touches. It is perfectly safe for o-rings. I believe you are correct that proper alignment and tension have more effect on chain life.
WD40 is a solvent and penetrating fluid. Great for most cleaning but not on O ring chains. This is because WD40 is also a solvent. It won't destroy the rings but it gets past the rings and eventually disperses the grease packed inside the chain and you get a rattly chain. Always clean with paraffin and use a proper chain spray for lubing. Chain looks way too tight in video. Always adjust with wheel on ground with chain in tightest position.
I recently drove my Kawasaki 250KLXs Duelsport from NH to South Florida, using I-95 for most of the 1650 mile trip. I soaked the chain good with WD-40 every 400 miles. The little KLX preformed well and the chain arrived in as new condition. Thank you for this great video showing how I can keep it clean. Detailed and interesting.
In my opinion your video is pretty spot on. One thing I noticed though, while cleaning your rear sprocket. While spinning the front side clockwise, there is a chance to get your fingers caught in the chain (for the viewers that try to copy what you've done). Great video though, thanks for sharing.
I use wd40 to clean everything on the sprocket and frame drippings. Silkolene pro chain lube and kerosene to clean with. The problem I have with WD 40 is that it will not stay on anywhere near as good as any other chain lube on the market. There two way different lubes. One is made to be tacky and stick and WD 40 is really good at breaking down as a lube. This is just my opinion as everyone has one. For each there own. Nice bike and I see all the aftermarket goodies you've put on!
That's one extensive cleaning, but I like it! I'm still stuck on using Motul cleaner and lube here. Been debating on kerosene and WD40 eventually I will switch to those products once I change out my chain and sprocket. Love your bike and that 3D chain is beautiful!!
Compared to my 2005 gsxr 1000 it seems like your chain is a little tight? The manual says 1 to 1 1/4 of free play? It's hard to determine what exactly that means. Do I measure with a really strong push on the chain or what. Your is either tight or my chain is too loose? Have a safe year bud
Great vid, I use Chain wax lube, is special paraffin base for street & off road use, also O-ring chain safe, fling resistant, is a great product and since is wax, it last a while. WD-40 I use it for lots of other stuff but I don't like to apply to any chains.
pro tip. buy the little blue bottle of kerosene from walmart and put a spray nozzle from a 409 bottle or another empty bottle that size. Let it soak and use a grunge brush to scrub it. If you are feeling frisky, clean the kerosene with soap and water next, then spray with water. While on the rear stand, run the bike in gear to dry and heat the chain. then you are ready to lube it.
I find that with WD40 I don't have to pre-clean chain with kerosine. The stuff works like a magic, all grease goes off, and chain looks like new. Then I wipe it good, go for a little ride, and apply chain wax. Btw, nice to see someone else cleaning chain with WD40, i had my doubts initially about it.
every inch of your bike is so clean. my only concern is i think tension of your chain is too tight. btw good video i also do the same method no worries using wd40.
I personally have been using WD-40 to clean my chain and then I use white lithium chain lube to lube the chain. So I guess I'm getting the best of both worlds LOL. And for the guys that are hating on WD-40 this particular method was recommended to me by the dealer. This method has worked wonders for me especially getting rid of stiff links or chain Kinks. The one product that I will never use again is a chainwax Lube, That product is what caused my stiff links or Kinks.
nice music running in the background! i wasted way too much chain cleaner and didn't get my chain cleaned this video was helpful. nice bike i subscribed!
That is a nice looking chain, well done man! I got lazy over the winter and didn't take as much care of mine as I'd have liked - It's supposed to be a silvery colour but now very much black from all the grime (hey, I'm from England, cleaning your bike in that cold and rain is madness)! Anyway I'm stealing some of these ideas. Thanks for the video mate :)
Pretty chain on that bike. 1. When you are using a solvent and a scrub brush on anything, but particularly here, ALWAYS wear hand and eye protection. The brush is literally flicking solvent coated grains of sand and grit. One tiny grain of sand in your eye will feel like a jagged chunk of crushed pea gravel in your eye. Dermatitis on your hands makes them itch on the inside, you can't scratch it. It's frigg'n miserable. You did a thorough job for a chain that wasn't very dirty, but what you did could have been done easier by taking off chain guards and using a pressure washer. Then once a year or more often if needed, pull the master link, take the chain off and soak it in kerosene for a day to a week or so, then give it a good brushing, hang it up, spray with a non-petroleum cleaner like Super Clean, rinse, let air dry. In a clean pan, 30 weight motor oil, soak the chain for a day (to allow capillary action to pull the oil into where it needs to get into), then hang it up and let it drip till it's done dripping. DO NOT USE WD40 for chain "lube". It is much more a solvent than a lubricant. It has no "film strength" or "service duty". It can lube a door hinge, but not a motorcycle chain worth beans.
And by the wear marks on the tires it is only ridden slowly in a straight line......... Get to leaning the dinner table over a little .. It's a sport bike
I have a Suzuki DR 650 1997 model. It has the original chain. Has only done 15000km all off road. I use Kerosene and lube it with clean engine oil just brush it on and let it drip off as per the Suzuki manual. O rings are fine when I shortened the chain they looked AOK. Sure a bit flicks off but is easy to wipe off. Just my 10 cents worth.Cheers.
Thank's for taking the Time , like to watch all the Different Techniques & Products , tried all different lubes , Gear oil next & it's meant to be Top Dog ". . 💣
Gear oil is the way to go, recommend by manufacturers too. WD-40 is petroleum based which damages rubber over time, a sure fire to destroy your chain 👍
i believe the brand called 'Driven' and it is alloy lightweight sprocket, slightly better performance than the normal harden steel sprocket. i believe it made in U.S.A? major use in race (alloy sprocket)
I see alot of people claiming the chain is too tight, it doesnt look too tight to me. You have to consider the angle of the swingarm in regards to the front sprocket to judge the chain slack, and the angle looks very low
I have change sprockets and chain 4 years ago. All together it cost me £230 because £80 of those went for a scottoiler v-system. I haven't clean or adjust the chain since. It is still new, not like new I mean NEW and it has 24.000 miles. I have only adjust it when I replace the tyres which means once every 10.000-12.000 miles
I've rode motocross forever. I run oring chains and have used the wd40 method. It works better than wax based lubes. Those attract more grime and wear your sprockets and chain faster. I can confirm longer life with the wd method even riding in sand and dirt :)
MotoTenacity don't waste your breath bro.. fucking idiots on here know fuckall.. dumb fucks who probably have never lubed a chain..I've raced road and motox bikes. Used wd40 for 20+ years and never had a issue.. sticky lubes act like a grinding paste but dumb fucks on here think they know it all.. 🤣🤣😋🤣
WD40 has some lubricating properties and if you're lubing it every 100 miles or so, I can see getting by using it. I don't run aluminum sprockets and expect 20-30k miles from my chain, I use a high quality chain lube. Sure it's a little more messy but I can live with that. I wipe it down 10 miles after a lube and I'm good for 400 miles. More thoughts on WD40 - some lubricating isn't saying much. There's more friction than you know in that metal on metal chain. I don't want to get by... I lube mine with the good stuff!
Ive started using Dawn liquid dish washing detergent and water, after a quick trip down the road to get the chain hot. Rinse amd let dry. The Orings are there to seal the factory grease in the roller, and to keep trash. WD 40 keeps Orings nice and conditiomed.
oh man, using WD is so counter productive. I like your videos. and mostly you're Bang on with your information. kerosene is perfect for cleaning your chain. it's a gentle boss. but WD actually will do damage to your inner seals. which will decrease the life of your chain.. use motul chain wax. keep the videos coming
Love the OCD! Great results! I personally clean with Iprone, then use gear oil as per manual. And in poor weather ill use a wax after to retain the oil. Oil every 600 miles and clean properly every 1200. As I commute. If it was a weekend toy id probably do it more often
Corey Slieker and you'll still be mistaken. I guess I'll trust my actual hands on experience, training, racers, and every tech I know. We dont like being called mechanics, just FYI.
Kawasaki zrx1200R. 2001. Chain: JK 530 110 links. X-ring. Lubricated every 500-700 kilometers. Cleaned every 2000-4000 kilometers. Chain lasted for 40000 kilometers. Which is impressive. Haven't tried automatic lubrivation systems. Some say they're good )
I would say use WD-40 OR kerosene since they are basically redundant. I personally use the paraffin/teflon based lubes on my bicycle and motorcycle because my chains are nearly never wet. The sticky lube products create an abrasive slurry in my experience. You may as well trickle sand on the chain after you grease it. Wet conditions are another matter entirely though. My chains stretch before they wear out as a rule.
dude wd40 contains kerosine . its a chain cleaner. Buy lube .Motul and castrol are good ones.. And your chain is screaming too tight.. You can hear it how dry it is from wd40 aswel. And 11k miles is way too low miles for a set. . I dont know who thought you this but they are having you for a fool.
I use a wax lube. I clean my chain after winter before first ride, middle of the year and after last ride before winter so that's 3 times a year. I have almost 29k miles on my stock chain and it still doesn't have enough wear to replace, it's close though. It's a ninja 650.
I use WD for the cleaning and the WD"Chin Lube" (yellow lid) formula for lubrication, lasts about a week or two and doesnt attract as much gunk and crap as alot of the lubes out there
WD40 as a stand alone lubricant for a chain is too thin and flies off too fast. 99.9% of riders won't lube their chain every other ride as you do, and it's not necessary with appropriate lubricants. I use WD to spay off grime then wipe with a towel but always apply chain lube. Honda chain lube is the best I've found so far after 36 years riding experience...ok, now tell me how wrong I am.. :)
The pivot point of the swing arm in relation to the center of the sprocket on the gearbox as well as, albeit to a lesser degree the weight of the rider and pillion will determine the tension / slack of the chain. Therefore best adjust it with wheels on the ground. I always ask my Mate to sit on the bike while I adjust the chain. He is a touch reluctant to help me at 03.45am!!
Brother your right I been using WD40 since one of my first Street bike 1985 Yamaha FZ750 it works! I used it on my ZX14 turbocharged you don't have that thick crap grease up all over your underbody. You have done a perfect job,so well I let no one touch my bike, I would let you do my chain. That's R1? Greetings from Canada
Nice move with the WD40, spotless bike! I know you will say it ain't broke don't fix it but check this out. -- DuPont Teflon Chain-Saver Dry Self-Cleaning Lubricant
Hello guys just a beginner rider over here, just wanna ask do you still going to apply another chain lube product after cleaning it with WD-40? Or WD-40 has its lube already?
Hey bro, how do you clean the grease off that comes on the chain when you buy it...Do you soak the chain in kerosene first or do you just clean it the way you did in the video...Thanks
Kerosene on an "O" Ring chain , and your rubbing the brush where the roller's cannot roll as they are still in contact with the sprocket teeth. interesting usage . I prefer a dry wax Like the Bell Ray product that sticks melts and then wicks into the roller pin area, I have had standard chains on dirt bikes for years that I used Mentholated Spirit and powdered graphite , didn't attract shit to the chain and didn't fling off either. . You should lightly spray the roller's go for a ride to warm the chain wipe it off and lube when hot and as it cools the lube is drawn into the joints. As I said I use a conventional chain and can make them last as long if not longer than an "O" Ring unit O Rings supposedly stop shit getting into the chain but they also stop Lube getting in.
I have been doing research on this topic and still learning. 2 excellent videos on this topic are by "fortnine". He tests various cleaners and lubes and rates them. In his tests he finds that kerosene actually leaks by the o rings, whereas wd40 does not. He also recommends gear oil as a lube. Another video by motorcycle magazine finds that wd40 does absolutely no harm to o rings. Both sources view wd40 as a cleaner but not as a lube. Based on these videos and others, I will be using wd first, then simple green as a cleaner; then gear oil as a lube.
WD 40 is an OK chain lubricant but its not sticky enough to stay on the the chain, going through water and mud (I have a dirt bikes)and I use bar and chain oil that you use in chainsaws, it's much much thicker and stays on that chain better
Just me or does anyone else love the smell of WD40 in the morning (?) Then for lunch on to the the smell of Petrol/Gas Haha great tip my bike loving friend.
when you touch the chain after you lube, is it supposed to be sticky or oily? I used ChainWax Chain Lube and it is actually sticky, not oily. how should the chain feel like?
I was tired of maintaining chain and got a shafts driven bike. cleaned it once for the first 10th miles. If you clean your chain that thoroughly within the manufacturer intervals I wonder when you are actually riding it.
I have worked for years both as an electrician and mechanical engineer and can safely assure you that wd40 has very poor lubrication properties, it is not advised for chains, best to use racing type non fling spray grease, best cleaner for the chain is either . ACF 50 or overnight soak in SAE 80 gear oil and wipe off surplus next morning, that way you can get 40k miles plus per chain, Ged
hey, you have a very nice and clean bike,You can upload a video how you clean the bike and what cleaning materials you use. It would be very useful! thank you again.
Can someone help me 1st time cleaning my chain (just hit 400 miles since I bought it) and I bought this stuff from lowes that's called klean-heat I believe i thought it was kerosene but it's called "kerosene alternative" it's clean says it meet and exceeds kerosene standards would it still work? Also what time of lube do you use on your chain I got ninja 250
Super clean bike, I'm trying to keep mine clean. I use tinfoil and spray in the tinfoil, it makes for easy clean up and little to no overspray when I clean, and lube it.
Question can anyone help if the chain on the bike is somewhat brown should I buy the bike it has low miles on it or should I get it and clean up the chain
Do you spend anytime riding.I have been riding since 1999.I do use kerosene. But not with brush.Simply put rear stand on put it in neutral and spin the tire I just keep old cotton shirt or rag wet with kerosene. Then take out for short ride about ten minutes.I t dries chain and heats it then use MAXIMA chain wax applying the way you did WD 40.And let it sit for couple of hours riding makes wax stick to chain.Do this about once a month.I get about 20,000 out of my chain
all i can add is that if you don't clean the underside of the chain and just the top, you aren't really cleaning the part of the chain that hits the sprockets the most. You are scrubbing the non-friction part and not the high friction area.
As a 30 year long all year round rider, this is a whole new world to me. This is serious. All the critics aside, you are serious about cleaning your bike and I will upvote you for that. +1

I use WD to spay off grime then wipe with a towel but always apply chain lube. Honda chain lube is the best I've found so far after 36 years riding experience...ok, now tell me how wrong I am.. :)
that is a good way to clean a chain .... but o-ring chains need to be lubricated after cleaning them
Sandro Żahra hints why he used WD 40
@@tricktop9064 you shouldn't use wd40. It's a water repellent not a lubrication
I'll check it out hommie
I follow the chain manufacturer recommendation. Kerosene for cleaning and gear oil for lubrication , done
Hello guys just a beginner rider over here, just wanna ask do you still going to apply another chain lube product after cleaning it with WD-40? Or WD-40 has its lube already?
Hi. It's look very dry... may be some of wb40 has to stay on chain?
That chain is sparkling clean!!! Show us how to clean a dirty chain
Man, you're attention to detail is on point! Can I hire you to do my bike? Lol
Jeff King Absolutely! if you were close, id just have you bring it over! ;)
I prefer a dry wax Like the Bell Ray product that sticks melts and then wicks into the roller pin area,
I have had standard chains on dirt bikes for years that I used Mentholated Spirit and powdered graphite , didn't attract shit to the chain and didn't fling off either. .
You should lightly spray the roller's go for a ride to warm the chain wipe it off and lube when hot and as it cools the lube is drawn into the joints. As I said I use a conventional chain and can make them last as long if not longer than an "O" Ring unit O Rings supposedly stop shit getting into the chain
but they also stop Lube getting in.
This is how I clean all my chain driven vehicles. My mopeds and motorcycles. Easy, cheap, and it does work and works well (for me at least).
What type of chain is that? D.I.D.? I like that black & gold..looks like a Renthal sprocket ( I think )?
WD 40 is an OK chain lubricant but its not sticky enough to stay on the the chain, going through water and mud (I have a dirt bikes)and I use bar and chain oil that you use in chainsaws, it's much much thicker and stays on that chain better
Just me or does anyone else love the smell of WD40 in the morning (?) Then for lunch on to the the smell of Petrol/Gas Haha great tip my bike loving friend.
what you put into the bucket? its petrol? this dont harm the o and x rings inside?
Thank You for sharing.
Very through & clear instruction video.
Kudos.
when you touch the chain after you lube, is it supposed to be sticky or oily? I used ChainWax Chain Lube and it is actually sticky, not oily. how should the chain feel like?
All the best bits. Great video. Love that EK3D!
Why do you run your chain so tight?
WD-40 smells so good.
drug guy
TT RACER right haha
had an old lady that got turned on by the smell of wd 40,lol
I was tired of maintaining chain and got a shafts driven bike. cleaned it once for the first 10th miles. If you clean your chain that thoroughly within the manufacturer intervals I wonder when you are actually riding it.
Dang, man! Can I hire you to detail my bike? :D
Thanks for the tips.
I have worked for years both as an electrician and mechanical engineer and can safely assure you that wd40 has very poor lubrication properties, it is not advised for chains, best to use racing type non fling spray grease, best cleaner for the chain is either . ACF 50 or overnight soak in SAE 80 gear oil and wipe off surplus next morning, that way you can get 40k miles plus per chain, Ged
thanks a lot mann. This is the best video on chain lubing. keep up. the good work
ashish joy thank you!
Cool chain..Where'd ya get it?
I hear in this moment in the back round. This just got a little bit better
to each his own... at least people are out there actually trying to maintain their bikes.. instead of going and getting ripped off by the dealerships.
this guy here loves his ride fuckin seriously..... cheers brah..
hey, you have a very nice and clean bike,You can upload a video how you clean the bike and what cleaning materials you use. It would be very useful!
thank you again.
Yeah man, I have! Check out my channel and look for a video called "how to: motorcycle detailing". Take care bro!
Isnt wd40 a DEEEE greaser?? so cant i use that to clean the chain then spray it with the proper lube afterwards?
Does the kerosene do any damage to seals on the chain brother?
Super clean bike, I'm trying to keep mine clean. I use tinfoil and spray in the tinfoil, it makes for easy clean up and little to no overspray when I clean, and lube it.
Thanks bro, that's actually a pretty good idea, I'll have to check that out.
NoxImus
I got a super long video lol but it has merit
Question can anyone help if the chain on the bike is somewhat brown should I buy the bike it has low miles on it or should I get it and clean up the chain
awesome video man watched both parts very detailed and informative Appreciate it!
Thanks bro, no problem!
Any way to clean the video down to about 3 minutes? I don't ride a tractor. I'm kind of in a rush to get downtown and pick up some banjo strings.
wow! super clean bike!! (your chain is cleaner than my fairings ha ha ha)
Haha, I'm anal man!
I'm convinced that,much like fire,Prometheus gave us WD40 too.Duct tape as well,I think.
I'm holding onto what you said, i'm reusing that! LOL
NoxImus
Spread the good word,brother!
Too clean everywhere :D
all i can add is that if you don't clean the underside of the chain and just the top, you aren't really cleaning the part of the chain that hits the sprockets the most. You are scrubbing the non-friction part and not the high friction area.
