I like this. I have changed tires many times with tools that belonged to my grandfather. It would be even easier if he used a marlinespike hitch to attach the wood handle.
@@Gazr965 Balancing a tire at home is surprisingly easy, just need a friction free wheel hub that spins easily, maybe a rear wheel hub with drum brakes, or an old disk brake wheel hub with no brakes and the bearing loosened a little, then if you spin the wheel, it will always stop heavy side down, then you add wheel weights at the top and repeat until it no longer has a heavy side. When I have new tires, after running in, I sometimes check them, and quite often improve on the professional balance. There are some corrections that the machines can do, that you can't do this way, but if the wheels and tyres are decent to start with, then you can quite easily do better than the professionals will normally do, they don't spend much time on it!
@@T.W.I.T. With All the Faffing around with the rope,,, I could easily do a car tyre quicker with a pair of tyre levers, and have done hundreds of times over the years.. And, Yes, It has to be balanced. Easier to just sit in the waiting room of a tyre place I think.. IMO.

Nice job! Avoids damage to the tire as well. One tip - let the tire sit in the sun for an hour beforehand to soften and expand. Works for car or motorcycle tires.
@@tazman8697 I put a rear tire on my r 1250 just the other day, cold and miserable, so I sat the tire on a chair in front of the wood stove for a couple hours. It went on easily.
I set a board on the tire and drive my car up onto the board. It helps if an arc is cut into the end of the board. Also, hardwood is less apt to break than a softwood like the building lumber you get at the big box store.
Great video. Now on to sealing the bead. Best way I've seen is to take a ratchet strap and encircle the tread with it. Tighten the strap to cause the bead on each side to expand outward towards the wheel. Add air and the bead will seal.
You can also tie a rope around the circumference of the tire and use the "Spanish Windlass" technique. You put a bar (branch, shovel handle, etc) across the tire beneath the rope, then twist the rope up until the beads both make contact with the rims. Then use air pressure to seat the beads/inflate the tire. Same effect, except you don't have to be as strong, nor do you need a ratchet strap.
I just did that with my ride on mower tyres, there was no way they were going to seal up and seat otherwise, without an air canon. Ratchet strap worked a treat, and it had to stay on until I had a couple of PSI in the tyre so they would hold the bead.
@@markmarkw1919 I've used this method, and it works great. It's incredible how much force that windlass generates. It will squish down a good-sized tire without much effort.
More with less requires a force of will and skill to accomplish. Very good presentation without one word. I bet this technique can be used on any size wheel . A tractor tire could be done using a steel cable and chain jack or winch as long as wheel could be anchored or just use a tall jack sitting on center of rim. Cool way to do for ones self. I just learned the advice to locate the yellow dot printed on most new tires opposite from where the valve stem is on the rim. This is supposed to take care of a fair amount of balancing requirements. Any shop that fails to do this might not have trained the staff properly. The possible and expensive variation in balance remedies should be a give away that this critical step has been neglected.

Good job - that's great! I'll try to remember that when I'm out in places with no reception. Also, to re-fill the type with air, remember adding a small amount of fuel inside, then lighting it. I've done it - it pops the tire out with force to seat the beads. And sometimes even fills it. Either way, you can pump it up with a bike pump... cool tricks in a pinch.

Zuerst mit dem Holz und dem Hammer, den Reifen von den Rändern nach innen geschlagen, dann bei der Außenseite, das eine Eisen rein und über den Felgenrand gedrückt und gehalten... mit dem 2. Eisen dann nach und nach weitergehebelt... Dann von hinten ein Eisen rein und den Reifen hinüber gedrückt und auf Spannung gehalten... anschließend mit dem Hammer auf die Wulst geschlagen... Die Felge ist dann nach ein paar Schlägen heraus gefallen... Den neuen Reifen dann drauf zu bekommen, ist ja einfach... 😉😎

I changed 4 tires by myself once. I run over the tire [right at the rim] to break the bead, do this for both sides. Then just use two pry bars just like a bicycle tire with screwdrivers to remove it off the rim. Granted a lot of work being that they were 4 265/70/R15 LT tires, but I got it done just fine being a teenager at the time. I did it in a gas station 7/11 parking lot so I had the air available.
That's the first thing I thought of. On a tire with a thin sidewall breaking the bead is a nightmare. A tire with a stiff sidewall is easier to break the bead.
Brilliant! I've resorted to TH-cam in the past to remove a tire from the rim, and while they technically worked, none were as easy and straight forward as this technique.
Love it, thanks very much. I'll be needed to do some DIY tire changes soon so the timing of seeing this video is perfect. Something I could add to this is after you've got the tire on, use a long enough rope to wrap around the centre of the tire then use it like a tournique to squash the centre of the tire in. This has the effect of pushing the sealing lips out and makes it easier to get an initial seal on the lips to start the tire inflation.
I could have used that method about 42 years ago when I had a flat, and I had a spare in the trunk that had no rim. I needed to swap the tire onto the rim with the flat. I was in downtown New Orleans on New Year's Day. Everything was closed and I couldn't get help anywhere. I was a young guy in the military, stranded with a friend. Four college students stopped and asked us if we wanted to buy the two extra tickets they had for the Sugar Bowl. Georgia and Hershel Walker would be playing Pittsburgh that night. I told them, "if you guys successfully help me change this tire and get air in it, I'll buy those tickets". The four of them, and the two of us, struggled for two or three hours, trying to swap these tires. An old man came wondering down the street and asked us what we were doing. I explained that we got the flat tire off the rim but couldn't get the new tire onto the rim. He said, "let me give it a try". I handed him the prybar and sledge hammer. The six of us young military and college guys, watched in awe as this old man put that tire on the rim in just a few minutes. We thanked him profusely and he waddled off down the street. All I need was air in the tire, but back in those days, everything was closed on New Year's Day, even in New Orleans. The college guys road us all over New Orleans trying to find an open service station or an air fill up station that wasn't shut off. The working ones required quarters and none of us had quarters. The stores were closed and we couldn't get quarters. Then I saw a city bus go by. I told everyone, "if the buses are running, they must have a garage with maintenance guys". We asked around and found out where the city garage was. We got there and found two or three old black men sitting around playing cards. We explained our dilemma and asked them to fill the tire for us. They were reluctant, saying it was against policy to do personal work. I begged and explained that we were military personnel and college students from out of state and they were our last hope. Reluctantly, one old fellow agreed to help. Each time he tried to put air in the tire, it wouldn't catch the rims and seal. He pretended that it wasn't going to work, and I could tell he wasn't really trying to make it work. He was about to send us off. I pulled a $20 bill out of my wallet and said, "do you think it will work on the next try". Poof! He inflated that tire so fast and snatched that $20 out of my hand. It was time to head to the Superdome for the game. Being from the south, I was pulling for Georgia. With 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Herschel Walker broke a 45 yard run for a touchdown to win the game. It was great time!

Don’t forget lube: water/dish soap 4:1. Doesn’t take very much. DON’T use petroleum oil. Damages most rubber compounds.

Set tire under pickup truck tow receiver and place vehicle jack between tire bead and receiver. Then extend the jack

Laying the tire out in the sun helps too, to warm it up and will be more flexible.

ガソリンスタンドとかに持って行ってお金払ってバランス取って貰うくらいなら、組み替えごとやって貰った方が割安だし早いし、外したタイヤも処分して貰えて好都合。

整備工場に勤めていた時、タイヤの組換が被ってチェンジャーを使われていた時に 同僚が「ビード落とすのだけ使わせて！」と言ってビードを落としたら…タイヤレバーを2本使って外した後、ワックスが塗ってあるビード部分をゴムハンマーで叩いて組み込んでいたのを見た時は大変驚きました！

Very clever !. It’s an adaptation of a trick used to seat some types of glass panels including windscreens in a retaining rubber/silicon seal

Thank you for sharing this great technique! Coating the rope or vinyl covered steel cable with a liquid soap might do the job easier. I sure will consider this trick 👍

Good job - that's great! I'll try to remember that when I'm out in places with no reception. Also, to re-fill the type with air, remember adding a small amount of fuel inside, then lighting it. I've done it - it pops the tire out with force to seat the beads. And sometimes even fills it. Either way, you can pump it up with a bike pump... cool tricks in a pinch.

ja, und wie er den Reifen von von den Rändern gedrückt hat, das hätte er mal mit zeigen sollen... 😃🥵Wir haben sowas im Notfall mit 2 Montiereisen, einem Hammer und einem Stück Hartholz gemacht ... Zuerst mit dem Holz und dem Hammer, den Reifen von den Rändern nach innen geschlagen, dann bei der Außenseite, das eine Eisen rein und über den Felgenrand gedrückt und gehalten... mit dem 2. Eisen dann nach und nach weitergehebelt... Dann von hinten ein Eisen rein und den Reifen hinüber gedrückt und auf Spannung gehalten... anschließend mit dem Hammer auf die Wulst geschlagen... Die Felge ist dann nach ein paar Schlägen heraus gefallen... Den neuen Reifen dann drauf zu bekommen, ist ja einfach... 😉😎

I changed 4 tires by myself once. I run over the tire [right at the rim] to break the bead, do this for both sides. Then just use two pry bars just like a bicycle tire with screwdrivers to remove it off the rim. Granted a lot of work being that they were 4 265/70/R15 LT tires, but I got it done just fine being a teenager at the time. I did it in a gas station 7/11 parking lot so I had the air available.

That's the first thing I thought of. On a tire with a thin sidewall breaking the bead is a nightmare. A tire with a stiff sidewall is easier to break the bead.

Brilliant! I've resorted to TH-cam in the past to remove a tire from the rim, and while they technically worked, none were as easy and straight forward as this technique.

Love it, thanks very much. I'll be needed to do some DIY tire changes soon so the timing of seeing this video is perfect.
Something I could add to this is after you've got the tire on, use a long enough rope to wrap around the centre of the tire then use it like a tournique to squash the centre of the tire in. This has the effect of pushing the sealing lips out and makes it easier to get an initial seal on the lips to start the tire inflation.

I could have used that method about 42 years ago when I had a flat, and I had a spare in the trunk that had no rim. I needed to swap the tire onto the rim with the flat. I was in downtown New Orleans on New Year's Day. Everything was closed and I couldn't get help anywhere. I was a young guy in the military, stranded with a friend. Four college students stopped and asked us if we wanted to buy the two extra tickets they had for the Sugar Bowl. Georgia and Hershel Walker would be playing Pittsburgh that night. I told them, "if you guys successfully help me change this tire and get air in it, I'll buy those tickets". The four of them, and the two of us, struggled for two or three hours, trying to swap these tires. An old man came wondering down the street and asked us what we were doing. I explained that we got the flat tire off the rim but couldn't get the new tire onto the rim. He said, "let me give it a try". I handed him the prybar and sledge hammer. The six of us young military and college guys, watched in awe as this old man put that tire on the rim in just a few minutes. We thanked him profusely and he waddled off down the street. All I need was air in the tire, but back in those days, everything was closed on New Year's Day, even in New Orleans. The college guys road us all over New Orleans trying to find an open service station or an air fill up station that wasn't shut off. The working ones required quarters and none of us had quarters. The stores were closed and we couldn't get quarters. Then I saw a city bus go by. I told everyone, "if the buses are running, they must have a garage with maintenance guys". We asked around and found out where the city garage was. We got there and found two or three old black men sitting around playing cards. We explained our dilemma and asked them to fill the tire for us. They were reluctant, saying it was against policy to do personal work. I begged and explained that we were military personnel and college students from out of state and they were our last hope. Reluctantly, one old fellow agreed to help. Each time he tried to put air in the tire, it wouldn't catch the rims and seal. He pretended that it wasn't going to work, and I could tell he wasn't really trying to make it work. He was about to send us off. I pulled a $20 bill out of my wallet and said, "do you think it will work on the next try". Poof! He inflated that tire so fast and snatched that $20 out of my hand. It was time to head to the Superdome for the game. Being from the south, I was pulling for Georgia. With 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Herschel Walker broke a 45 yard run for a touchdown to win the game. It was great time!
