My Hayabusa chain looks like that all the time. I use Dupont chain lube. Maybe once a month go over chain with a paper towel. Chain spotless with no effort. 30k miles so far on this chain. Many more miles to go on it.
Richard Johnson Same here man. It's great stuff that doesn't fling or drip and you can usually pick it up at those big branch style Wal-Mart's(not the typical Walmart) for like $11 per can. Kerosene for cleaning works well when poured into a hand pump spray bottle with a few pieces of paper or some cardboard (as Van did in the video) to keep your tire and rim from getting soaked. I like to try to do a light spray with the lube on the outside links too so they don't rust since my bike is outside most of the time.

It's not necessary to get all these staffs for chain maintenance as advertised. Kerosene does the job for cleaning the chain pretty well (even it's recommended according to some motorcycle manufacturers as per their their manual) after that just lube it with any branded chain lube.
Are the cleaner and MPPL solvents? The manufacturer said not to use solvents on my Indian FTR with an X ring chain. I have already bought the kit from you. Thanks Mark
We use this same kit on all of our bikes, not an issue. Use the cleaner first then apply the MPPL to the chain using it to rinse off the Chain Clean. Good to go as long as you do not let the cleaner sit on the chain for an overly long period of time. - Van

We use the synthetic stuff on the track because the chain will get lubed every day or when at MotoAmerica a little before each time the bike hits the track. If you are using the non wax style on a street bike I would try to put a little lube on it weekly. The chain wax will require less applications but looks horrible. - Van
Today's "O" Ring chains are sealed and you CANNOT get Lube into them very successfully , Yes clean the outside and then a hi tack hi pressure grease is ideal when I say Hi Pressure I am referring to the Greases ability to resist the tendency of the lube to being squeezed out from between sprocket teeth and roller's do NOT wipe the lube OFF but allow the propellant /Solvent to evaporate leaving behind the hi-tack lube only then wipe with a brush to distribute the lube . Just do not wipe it until the solvent is all gone as it's job is to assist in getting the Lube into the chain joints by greatly reducing surface tension. Remember that your trying to get lubricant inside the roller on top of the hollow Pin through which the solid pin from the outer side plates runs the "O" Ring seals these side plates. Oh I'd advise to NOT use Contact cleaner as the solvents in this product may effect the '"O" Rings
I've been using this kit and I like it. I usually use the chain wax with the kit. I've always wondered is it necessary to warm up the chain first (ride the bike for a few moments) when using the chain wax?
Use the straw that comes with the lube, aim for the O-rings & lightly spray (takes practice). I do that, let it sit for several minutes or hours while turnning the wheel every so often. Then I wipe the rest off with a clean rag before I ride.
The CleanUp goes way faster than the others. The multipurpose lube really isn’t necessary, imo. I like the Chain Wax, due to it not slinging as much as others I’ve tried. Having colored rims, orange, it’s almost impossible to keep it from happening.

It is really an as need situation. You don't want the chain to get super dry. The type of chain lube you use has an impact as well. The white colored chain wax will stay on much longer but some riders do not like how it looks so they will run the clear synthetic lube and apply it more often. - Van

I cleaned it off with some of the Maxima Chain Clean followed by a little Maxima Contact or Suspension clean. Same cleaners I used during the project. - Brian Van
You can use that to clean the chain as well. IMO this Maxima kit is the right way to go. The kit is just over $20 and the brush is $11, total is under $40. You will be able to clean and lube your chain for multiple seasons with this so it delivers solid value. Most people have no use for kerosene or diesel fuel and would have to go purchase an approved container, store it etc... which would make that a real pain in the ass IMO. With the kit you also have the MPPL which can be used for other maintenance items on the bike or around the house. - Brian Van

Sport bike chains are installed using a rivet link which makes removing and reinstalling it difficult. Kerosene can be used for sure but then you have to store it etc... Well the chain manufacturer recommends kerosene and gear oil. I find it a whole lot cheaper and a lot more effective and cleaner than spray and stuff everywhere
You can use that if you like. To be fair most people have no use for kerosene which is a lot harder to store than a can of chain cleaner. Do what works for you. - Van
YOSHIMURA Stator Cover and the black Crankshaft bolt info please?
Yosh is no longer producing those parts. - Van
Awesome Brian,.
Thanks for the video, very nice. !
Thank you for your service to our country and the kind words! - Brian Van
+Sportbike Track Gear
I watch your videos all the time, they are very informative and thorough. Say Why don't Lightech make a chain adjuster for the 2016 ZX14R SE. ! ???
Thanks.!
Lightech makes some amazing stuff for sure. I just checked and they do not show the ZX14 any love. - Van
Why does the front sprocket makes the sound when you spin the wheel
The chain and sprockets will generate some friction which will produce some noise while spinning. As long as you have done your maintenance and the chain is adjusted nothing to worry about. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear oh okay that explains it. Thanks for answering my question. I’m doing new chain and sprocket on my r6 soon. I just ordered it from you guys
How to clean a chain - if you’re Brian Van just yell at it to come clean and the dirt/grease will fall off.
Man do I wish that was the truth. - Van
Is there such a thing of using too much chain cleaner and lube?
If you notice a ton of excess flinging off the chain after you lube it you will need to reduce the amount you use the next time. End of the day only so much lube can stick to the chain before it drips or flings off. - Van
Excellent video, but please use protective rubber gloves to prevent dermatitis from all those chemicals.
David my hands have bathed in this stuff since I was 16. Before starting STG I was a technician at a Cadillac dealer for many years with daily exposure. At this point it is what it is. - Van
Look into THE GREASE NINJA...saves you a lot of time and lube
Looks pretty cool, I just sent them an email. - Van
why did you decide to clean a not very dirty chain?
Chain was super dirt before I cleaned it. Remember this is a race bike and not a street bike. The chain needs to be pristine and well lubed. - Van
Great video!!
Appreciate that! - Van
i use all 3 , clean mppl then synthetic, i feel i should cut out cardboard to protect bike
Hey, nice video. Thank you for that. But please...wear rubber gloves (especially while working with chain cleaners)
I have been wrenching since I was a kid (20 years professionally) and have never worn gloves. Some believe they are necessary and others not so much. - Van
I use lanolin spray.
Great video! Why not take the chain off and soak it in kerosene? I would love to buy some kind of product to catch the drops and help keep the chemicals off the tire/bike.
Sport bike chains are installed using a rivet link which makes removing and reinstalling it difficult. Kerosene can be used for sure but then you have to store it etc... If you had a need for kerosene in your home then this would work for sure. I like to wedge cardboard between the tire and swingarm with a drain pain placed underneath to catch run off. - Van
Indeed true agree with this vid, I'm always do maintain my chain the verdict result oustanding 👍👍👍
Appreciate you watching and leaving the comment. The end result was exactly what I was looking for, super happy with the Maxima products and that Tirox chain brush. - Brian Van
Would you ever recommend using a heat gun to heat up the chain?
No, I would not use a heat gun. Clean off excess lube, get the chain tension set and ride it. Be sure to inspect after the first ride and lube it as needed. - Brian Van
There's an easier way to warm up your chain. Hint, it's attached to it.
Always clean a hot chain. Go ride a few miles come back and clean.
I love how he first just introduces the 3 maxima chain cleaners, by 7mins in he's got about 10 different cans he recommends you buy. Now do u think he cares about the guys trying to learn about cleaning his chain for the first time, or picking up sponsors?
I am not sponsored by Maxima. Simply showing you products we use on our bikes, if you don't want to buy them that's up to you. If you think you can do a better job feel free to buy a camera and shoot some videos. - Van
so mppl and while its wet w mppl start washing?
Yes I would use the MPPL on the chain before washing with water. It will give the chain a little protective film until you lube it. - Van
thx mr. van 🤝🏻
Thanks man
You are welcome and thank you for watching! - Van
I dont see any before video so it didnt happen. That's a new chain. Dont lie..🙃
LOL It is just that damn clean. - Van
Brian, what 520 chain and sprocket brand(s) would you suggest for a daily-commuter 2018 Kawasaki Z650 (price not being a factor)? I want the best quality / longest lasting.
For your Z650 I would go with steel Driven 520 Sprockets both front and rear with an RK MAX-X Chain. This kit will perform well and last a long time with proper maintenance. Here is a link to this on our site: www.sportbiketrackgear.com/driven-520-chain-and-sprocket-kit-kawasaki-z650-2017/ - Brian Van
Where can I get those shifter kit
And what brand. Thanks in advance
What year is your R1? This is the Auto Blip Clutchless Downshift Kit from FlashTune. It is available for a few different bikes now and you will need a flash to use it. Shoot me an email directly if you want more info service@sportbiketrackgear.com - Brian Van
Steve never actually shows anything Van asks him to show. Not that I can remember at least.
These install videos are really hard to shoot my man. Also important to note we are a bike shop and not a Hollywood studio. - Van
I'm guessing Steve didn't get a raise last year, so no dirty chain shown.
don't use the MPPL until after you warsh bike obviously
Best to use it after you rinse if you are using a hose. - Van
edit your videos down below 4 minutes mate. good info but it's a snore at 12 minutes long cleaning a clean chain
Not enough time to fit all the content that needs to be included. It takes longer than 4 minutes to clean the chain or install a kit of rearsets. My goal is to help riders get the project done not collect TH-cam views. - Van
How can i believe that is not a new chain. he didn't even show how it previously looked. Just showed a new chain and said 'i made it like a new one'. 😝
This isn't CNN, I really cleaned the chain using the product we show in the video. - Van
Right
Thanks for watching! - Van
Why are you doing this video AFTER you already have cleaned the god damn chain?😅
I do not let our bikes get very dirty. - Van
Also clean your sprockets!
Degreaser and gear oil.
Change my mind.
It's your bike, use whatever you want. - Van
Kerosene is the best chain cleaner than DuPont chain saver
That's all you need, keep your money in the bank.
DuPont chain saver leaves a semi whitish yellowish wax in the areas on the chain you couldn’t reach after wipe off. I used it for about a year. It dirties chains quickly too.
American made product pride on a japananese bike hahaha
I don't really care where it is made, for me it's all about how well the product performs and is it worth purchasing. - Van
Sportbike Track Gear that’s cool I respect that a lot!
wouldn't i cheaper just to buy a new chain lol
The chain clean tools and chemicals last a very long time, you will be using the same stuff for several seasons. Staying on top of the chain maintenance will improve performance and make the chain and sprockets last longer. - Van
thanks a lot for you , im your big fan from taiwan =D your youtube chanel is my favorite lol
Cool man, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave this comment. It is appreciated my brother. - Brian Van
Hey dude, please wear gloves when you do this... !! Especially when spraying those products on your hands...
If I am getting something from this it already happened decades ago. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear I’ve been doing this for years as well, I now have multiple myeloma...
Too much of product.
If a track rider then this is the best may be.
But for a normal bike like an r3 we only need kerosine to clean and use the lube
You can use the kerosene if you prefer. The reality is the products we show are much more convenient than storing a can of kerosene to clean your chain. - Van
Promotion, advertising, marketing...nothing else. Kerosene and gear oil. $17 4 liter jug will last 5 years of cleaning. Also use kerosene to clean frame and wheel from flinging lube.
It is a lot easier to store a spray can than 5 gallons of Kerosene. - Van
I use kerosene
If you have another reason to have kerosene around this is not a bad idea. - Van
Woah... That bike rly needs an oil change. 5:39
How did you determine that for an outside standpoint
Next time do a dirty chain ....
My chains get cleaned after each track weekend and never get really dirty. - Van

We do the majority of our riding on the race track during track days and racing. No modern sport bikes are produced with shaft drive. - Van
Yeah, let me get an r6 with shaft drive lol 😂
@@sportbiketrackgear No old school sport bikes had shaft drive either....WOW!! , show us ALL the trophies you got, using your 'sport-bike' with chain drive....makes NO difference, ITRW....only at the top 0.5%....you in that space? LOLs.

Almost, but not entirely, Unreasonable Where’s my shaft drive r1? Still have nothing to show.
Why didn’t you just show the actual cleaning process on the dirty chain?
We keep up on our stuff so it never really gets very dirty. Process is the same regardless of how dirty it starts off. - Van
