A most amazing musician! This song is so recognizable and I love it. Back in the day my favorite TV show was Miami Vice and this song was playing during the opening credits and throughout the pilot episode. It was said to change television forever. Thanks for a great reaction.

Not in the opening credits...that was a longer version of the standard Miami Vice theme. In The Air Tonight was playing during the climactic scene as Crockett and Tubbs were driving thru Miami late at night hunting down the drug lord they were after.

He is one of the all-time most talented musicians ever. His timing in every aspect is impeccable. He gets to the drums at the precise right moment. He hits every beat, with hands and feet, while his voice remains steady. Today's musicians are more concerned with their social media popularity. Collins's focus was only the art, and it shows.

This demonstrates the difference between a true musician and a mere performer. And yes the best way to enjoy this song is to get into your car at 1AM on a warm night (when there's no one else on the road), roll down the window, crank up the volume, and ride.

    • @PurpleIrishSweater

      Yes!!
Except it’s a dirt road, on a summer night, with a storm coming in so that the road is randomly lit up by the lightening flashing through the sky - and the rain doesn’t start until the song ends.
Then the song feels like it has its own light show, and the night sky is applauding with the rest of us.💜

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums).

Daryl's haunting guitar sound on this was freaking amazing. I love how they applied the layers to the song one at a time. Each one building upon the other. Anticipation increasing. Brilliant.

The man is a legend. This was my childhood. Saw him last in concert in 2018 in Toronto. Came on stage with a walker and sat for the whole set. His 18yo son played the drums since Phil can no longer hold the drum sticks because of neurological damage. Seeing your reaction - not knowing who he was or what to expect about made me cry. So glad he could touch your heart like he has all his fans for the last 40+ years. 💕💕

Phil Collins was the drum player to Genesis. The lead singer quit and the band wanted Phil to sing. He did not want to,but the band got so popular he kept on. Never could find another lead singer, so he stuck with it. One of the greatest 80s bands ever!

Phil was the drummer for one of my favorite bands at the end of the 60s into the mid-70s. Peter Gabriel, their lead singer, left to pursue a solo career. We all thought that was the end of the band. Then Phil jumped up and showed he could sing, even while drumming. Genesis found even more success! Then Phil continued with Genesis while also pursuing solo and other projects. Phil Collins was the sound of the 1980s! He did numerous movie soundtracks and was the backbone of the sound of Miami Vice. You basically couldn't watch a Disney movie without hearing Phil's voice. His age and neurological disease have basically ended his career.
