Most recognized drum drop in all of music. PERIOD!! I honestly can't believe that you'd never heard this before. Portions of this song was spread through a lot of motion pictures...TV shows (Miami Vice specifically). Really glad you did this though. I had to do a double take on when the drums came in. As we men of culture know, it is our sworn duty to beat the hell out whatever inanimate object is nearest to us when this comes on. And people around should know and nod in respect when they see some 50-year-old dude giving his wheel a good trashing while driving or waiting for the green lights. This is the song we are responding to - via a sacred ritual we have followed for 40 years now.

A great reaction from you, I've been a massive Phil Collins fan for years. He's saying 'Hold on' not Oh Lord btw (that's the British accent for you). I heard he wrote the song shortly after his break up from his wife too but was also led to believe it's about him seeing someone walk away from someone drowning/in trouble and he is singing to the person who walked away. I guess it's open to interpretation and what people want to hear in a song.

    • @sandyleewhite
      @sandyleewhite ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@kp3369 I appreciate the feedback, although, when double checking with the original lyrics by Phil Collins himself, they are saying Oh Lord??? So I am not certain if you are correct.......here are the lyrics:
In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins)
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
And I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh, lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord
Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord, oh, lord
      Well, I remember, I remember don't worry
      How could I ever forget?
It's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep this silence up
      No, you don't fool me
The hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh, lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord, oh, lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh, lord, oh, lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh, lord, oh, lord, oh, lord, oh, lord

Helene here from Vegas. First of all, he is saying Oh, Lord. Second of all, in the lyrics at the beginning, he is saying “If I saw that you were drowning, I would not lend a hand.” Phil writes about his life. This was written after (or during) a VERY bitter divorce, and the lyrics are full of anger. “But you dont know who I am”. Yes, he is speaking metaphorically there. She never “knew” him. Thirdly, if you ever watched the TV show Miami Vice, Several of Phil’s songs were used in the series, this one most famously. And Fourth, Phil used to be drummer for the hugely successful prog rock Genesis in the mid to late seventies. When the singer, Peter Gabriel left to pursue a solo career, they tried to find a replacement, but none could sing as well as Phil...so he became their vocalist. In the early eighties, Phil launched his solo career and it became one of the most successful “band to solo” careers in music history. Many consider him the “sound of the eighties”. Fifth, Phil also played the drums on Robert Plant’s first two solo albums after the death of Zeppelin, and was extremely helpful to him (according to Plant himself) in getting up to speed about navigating the business side of the music business and running your own band...things that Robert had never had to deal with before.

Legend has it that Phil and brothers were swimming locally at home in UK. One of his brothers got a stitch in his foot while swimming, got into difficulty. He was saved by brother but that brother died. While all this was happening, a man from their village was witness to this tragedy, as he stood there over looking the beach. The man did nothing to help these kids.
Role on years later, Phil is a star. He hires a private investigater to find the man. Under the pretence of "winning" a ticket to see Phil live in concert. He has spot light right on him as the song is played......He is wailing 'I've been waiting for this moment all my life' at the end meaning that he is sing/crying with pain, grief and anger. Irish artists like Sinead O Connor ' wail' through sincerity of the pain they have suffered. This song is perfection because he lived the experience.
    - greetings from Ireland.

Phil Collins wrote this song right after a divorce from his wife in 1980. The drowning means that he knows she was cheating on him, he saw it with his own eyes, among other things that she's done. I've seen your face my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am means that she never knew him as a person or what he's capable of, and that the relationship was built around lies. This is a powerful song of regret and anger. Enjoy!

Helene here: The man at the beginning that looks like Gandalf. (ZZ Top) with his eyes closed, is the GREAT, Iconic, legendary bassist Leland Sklar. When asked about that moment, he commented that he just lost himself in the vibe. Touring with Phil Collins and this spectacular group of musicians is one of the highlights of his career. A career that has spanned more than 50 years, studio and touring, and .quite literally thousands of albums and artists...and just about all genres. He has his own TH-cam channel.....it’s one of the best for discovering SO many artists, watching him play his magnificent bass lines and hearing stories of the studio, the music scene and touring throughout the decades. He has a series of videos of him playing along to the songs from a couple of Phil Collins tours. Check it out.

I didn't realize that was Leland Sklar. That man has played on a few dozen of my favorite albums and I've seen him touring with Jackson Browne & Crosby & Nash back in the mid to late 70's. Before the internet most of my info on the artists and bands I liked came from the liner notes on and album and the Rolling Stone magazine. And I remember seeing Leland on so many of the musicians in the liner notes. I live in Nashville and Leland has played on many country artists albums in the 90's. And, of course, much praise to Phil for an amazing performance. I first saw him in Genesis and enjoyed all the players but he's the one that I liked very much. I've enjoyed bands that the drummer was a writer and singer like Don Henley.

This live performance was in Paris in 2003. The instrumental intro let each backing instrument get layered in one at a time and it’s legitimately over two minutes long. The song was the first single released from Phil’s first album in 1981. I consider this staging of this live version the best ever. And that’s before you get to the middle of the unique drum fill, an iconic moment in music history

He is saying “Oh Lord”. Phil Collins has been around as long as I can remember( and I’m pretty damn old). He was the drummer in a band called Genesis before he started his solo career but he has a lot of songs that became hits and a whole lot were used in movies so you’ve probably heard his music before you just didn’t know it. Besides this song, one of my favorites by him is I Don’t Care Anymore... I crank it up a lot of days on my way home from work😂

They are black lights. They look blue and reflect white objects very brightly. Let me break up your confusion. I am a classically trained guitarist. My advice to you reactionists is this. DO YOUR RESEARCH. This man is iconic back to the 70s. From his career with Peter Gabriel another icon in the band "Geniuses" to his incredible singles career starting with "Full Metal Jacket". The uban legend behind this song puts a whole different twist on the song which Phil will deny, but we never let go of the story When I was a twenty something woman in this era the story goes like this; 'When Phil was a teenager he was standing on a hill. His best friend went swimming in the sea coast. The undertoe apparently pulled him under. Phil was yelling to a man walking near by on the beach to help his best friend who was drowning. The man looked up and ignored Phil who was screaming at the top of his lungs. His friend drowned. Phil apparently searched and searched for this man for years. He finally found him a lifetime after this incident. He sent an invitation to this man to a concert appearance. The man didn't know who he was accept for his famous career. The seat he had was in the middle front row at his concert when this song was first played live. After the concert was done. The man apparently realized who Phil was singing to and why he was singing it. He went home and the urban legend was, that this man killed himself. Listen now to this song with that story in your head. He denies vemiently to this day that the urban legend was true. We all believed it was for a variety of reasons. True or not, who in this world wouldn't feel the same way? Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
