At that time all the top artists came together, leaving their egos at the front door, & donated time & money for this charity event (Famine in Africa). Lionel Ritchie & Michael Jackson wrote this song!! I get chills every time! 😭😭 I think Cindy Lauper killed it on the vocals!! Love Tina Turner!! Love the reactors’ faces when MJ shows up - pure joy! 😁😁😁 l’m pretty sure artists today couldn’t set aside their differences long enough to pull this off!! They don’t have the talent either!!
Man Debra, you couldn't have said it any clearer than just what you said. Ain't, oops sorry forgot this isn't a word...ok, ok, you really had to have had to grow up back when music was authentic and real!! Musicians back in the day really had to have a little of something of a voice in order to make it back then. These so called wannabe singers today, seriously don't get it!! The "it" being, NO AUTO TUNE, clear and concise vocals, none of the mumbo jumbo crap their spilling through the radio nowadays..WOW, what a load of wasted air space; these goofballs have absolutely nothing-nada to offer us, the listening viewers!!! I just can't force myself to sit, stand, run, or anything else and listen to the horrible garbage they want to call talent & music. If I want to have a good day, just kicking back and really enjoying my time, well I'd just get out my trusty LP's/CD's and have the time of my life knowing at least I'm hearing the BEST!!

My dad was in a folk trio in the 60’s so music was a big part of our family’s life!! Here’s a little story … I watched a channel where this guy demonstrated how auto tune works. I was flabbergasted at how you can have the worst vocals then with auto tune now you sound good!! 😳 For fun the guy tried to auto tune Freddie Mercury!! Guess what? Nothing changed … that’s how good Freddie’s vocals were. 😂 👊 (boom)

When Quincy Jones is conducting and Harry Belafonte in the back letting others shine you know there's nothing but greatness in the room. I was lucky enough to have been in my 20s when this was created and they were ALL superstars then. The 70s and 80s was the greatest time in music history. 💖💖💖💖

This came out 1985 all the proceeds went to African Relief fund raising 70 million dollars in 85 (145 million in today's dollars with inflation 2021) to feed children in African Countries. The artist donated their time. I bought this cassete when it came out I was 9 years old then. Wish they do more of this but todays musicians have so overblown egos. 😢 No one artist would get along

I remember the first time I ever heard this and it still gives me goosebumps to hear it now and see all those musical giants! It was an incredible event and every time it came on the radio or the TV, I sang it, loud and proud!!

I've said this numerous times. You wonder how they got all these legends together? Who in their right mind would say NO to Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie? Those 3 put this together! There was even a sign above the studio door that said "Check your egos at the door!". This was about helping the needy people of Africa. No one person was bigger than the cause or this song! What makes this song even better is the fact that each artist is truly singing from the heart.And Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen brought it home towards the end.
About a year before this one British artists did one called Do they know it's Christmas, that was for Africa as well. Sting, Duran Duran, George michael to name a few.

Let's not forget "Tears Are Not Enough" by Northern Lights, another great song! It tied with WATW at winning the Grammy Award the following year.
I feel *so* old, I remember when this first came out and how the music industry seemed to be all too willing to try to help people who needed it. The best bit, imo, is when Cyndi Lauper busts in with her tutti-fruity hair and huge personality. We definitely need this kind of spirit again.

And the crazy thing is that this was right after an awards event and the artists were rounded up on the fly, I believe by Quincy Jones and Kenny Rogers, and Lionel Richie. They stayed at the hotel to practice over and over to learn a song they'd never heard, and also get this video filmed. No awards after party. Just them coming together to make this masterpiece. It was a long night, but so worth it.

You're right, it was Kenny, Quincy and Lionel that rounded everyone up right after the awards to come join in this project directly after the awards til 8 o'clock in the morning.
The special about the song was so good. Just hated that Jane Fonda was the host. She was sooooo hated at the time.
I still get the thrill of watch it watching someone who hasn’t heard it before. It’s such an amazing song and the best artist of all time. Sad to say this will never happen again in the same way. They cared about the what the song was written for and that was to help the world but all get people to realise that we are all the same and we are all people and we should all love each other and care about each other. That’s the message

There were many who said the same thing then but look. Its not adversity that writes history, it is overcoming adversity as a people and becoming better for it. You all see the agenda of the current leadership. This is their vision for the future and they don't care what anyone else thinks, but that is not how It works. I think a heavy majority has a different future in mind and if they don't care, we get loud. This is still a democracy, for how long is shaky but we need to be heard before we can't. I condemn communism and everyone associated with it.

Great song... I agree with many here. It's up to us to ignore the garbage put out by the politicians the media and sites like this. It's up to all of us. Almost everyone that I know agrees.
When the stars started arriving at the studio, there was a sign that read Egos must be left at the door. When I first saw this I was in awe at the amazing sound and all the celebrities. There was Hands Across America too, where there was a human chain that stretched all across America. Everyone held hands at the same time for a few minutes making the chain. It was for charity for Africa.

The song We Are the World was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones. This recording with so many artists singing and the Live Aid Concert in England and the United States are events we will all remember forever. For me, it was lucky to have enjoyed them in the 1980s, all united by Africa without egos and with a common goal, to raise funds. Wonderful the year 1985
There won't be anything like this again. They supported and respected each other and were there for a common goal. They were to check their egos at the door (notice Prince isn't there - he wanted special treatment and Quincy Jones told him no, also Madonna wasn't even invited!). They also just came from the American Music Awards, directly to start recording this at 10pm and worked their the night. Also notice, these are legends - no one was in their 20's. While some were 80's stars, most have been on the industry for a L-O-N-G time. Most came up in the 60's and 70's, then you have Ray Charles from the late 40's! Many of them were grandparents who were still at the top of the industry! Don't forget they all could really sing! No auto tune in 1985! I was 15 years old when this was released and premiered on MTv, back when MTv played music! We knew the words quickly. We played this noon stop!

I still remember watching this live on TV during the telethon. IT was absolutely amazing seeing all these artists that basically everyone listened to come together and collaborate on this.

There was another group song "Do they know it's Christmas" written by Bob Geldof in 1984 to raise funds for the famine in Ethiopia. Those singers were English and Irish. That duet between Bruce Springsteen (The Boss) & Stevie Wonder does something to the soul/spirit. It gives me goosebumps, along with MJ's solo parts.
This is one of the most epic efforts in musical history.

I loved your reaction and your appreciation for the level of talent that was assembled in one room on one night to do something about the starvation in Africa at the time. I grew up with these musicians and was in LA when the album dropped. The lines out the music stores and down the sidewalks were incredible, and I got my copy on that day. An event like this will probably never happen again. All these years later, I still tear up when I think of how privileged we all were to have them. Kudos dude!
What I love about this video is that they all take time out to actually be there and contribute....no zoom, no skype like today. Gives you the feeling that they really care. I LOVE Ray Charles.

There was this one made in 1985, along with the UKs equivalent song Do They Know It's Christmas by Bandaid. There was also a Canadian one I think but I dont know their song. There was huge famine in 1985 in Ethiopia I think it was, so artists came together to raise money.
"Tears Are Not Enough" was the Canadian song with Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Randy Bachman and others.

I was around 14 when this magic happened. This song was played all over the World. I remember the day of 28th of March of the 1986, like over 6.000 radio stations all over the planet, played the song simultaneously at 10:15am. I remember in schools (Italy) when they told us that the song would have been played all over the planet and it is been so... It has been the biggest moment of unification that I ever lived in my life. Something that is just utopia, a dream, at the day of today... I'm so glad that I'm coming from that era. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie materialized a masterpiece that night in L.A. This song has been made for charity. All those superstars went for free to spend the night in a studio to record the song. Some of them arrived there straight from the Americans awards etc .. They all left just when the job was done in the morning. No financial compensation for that long amazing job that they did. A support to Africa, that's it. There is a fantastic documentary (presented "hosted" by Jane Fonda) that shows part of that magical night. Whoever is attracted by this song and wants to know more, I suggest to watch that documentary.
The amount of talent in this song is OVERWHELMING. It brings tears to my eyes every single time I watch it, I swear. There is a similar concept song that was done by Band Aid to raise money for Ethiopia called "Do They Know it's Christmas?". It has a lot of talented bands and solo artists, but they tend to be a bit younger than the ones here.

I was 12 when this song came out. It had a big impact then and I believe it's so true for today. It's a beautiful song and I still get emotional when I hear it. It has so many legendary singers on this song. I love your reaction to this♥️
