Buster Merryfield's Grave - Only Fools and Horses Legend

  • Hi everyone, in this video I also mention that I had been to Roger Lloyd packs grave, but I called him the wrong name. Just to let you know I had been up since 4 am that day and my brain just went blank at that moment. So please excuse that part where I call him David by mistake. Thank you 🙏
Born in Battersea, London, England, his father, also called Harry Merryfield, was a fitter, and his mother Lily, was a part-time waitress. His sister Irene died when she was eight years old. He was given the name "Buster" by his grandfather, as he weighed nine pounds at birth, and it stuck throughout his entire life, not least because he refused to divulge his real name to anyone during his lifetime and it only became open knowledge after his death.

My late grandma lived in Verwood and often bumped into Buster doing his shopping. She often stopped for a chat with him and said how nice he was. He signed a photograph for me which I still have:-) When he died, she stood outside the church for his funeral, just along the road from this cemetery and saw David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst and other stars arriving.

Cemeteries are fascinating places. The churchyard at Nacton village near Ipswich is where you'll find the grave of a sailor who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar. An unusual incident is reveled in the Akenham Burial Case. Only Fools and Horses fans debate which was the better character, Grandad or Uncle Albert. Uncle Albert was a new presence in Del and Rodney's lives so there was a huge backstory to explore. The transition from Grandad to Uncle Albert in Only Fools.... was handled brilliantly by the writer, John Sullivan.

Roger is buried in Highgate East cemetery. My husband took the time to find his grave, being a big fan. We were due to see Boycie do a talk but it was cancelled due to illness and a few days later he died. I’ve seen Only Fools and Horses so many times that it almost becomes wearing. I'm only 21, and I just recently finished watching only fools and horses, and I loved every single episode of it, I just miss the old stuff all those actors who played their part and I know it's sad that some them ain't here and the ones that are have aged now, times flying and I feel that in todays time things are rough, we don't get that joy and fun as it was 30-40 years ago even 20 years ago now days things and people have changed but not for the good sadly, we will never get such a show back again or those actors and their characters ever, nor we will get those year back, and I remember my grandad used to tell me about these shows but I didn't have a clue than, as im British asain my grandad was the first in my family who came to UK in 1969/70 from Pakistan, and those years were hard for Asians to live in uk due to racism and violence but they lived and worked, luckily he had mix of friends here who were came in uk way before him, now that his not with us rip grandad 1941-2015, now that I've seen quite alot of 70s 80s 90s TV shows and programs it just makes me feel happy and excited to see how those times were.

He was promoting to work in banking as I believe he was in the field of work for many many years. I got him to autograph the book he had just written, but was just blown away when he spoke, very, very posh, not like the Londoner he portrayed in the comedy. Uncle Albert said to the boss, Rodney wont be into day, he's got a belly ache. Rodney said, why did you say that? Uncle Albert said, You got an ache have'nt you? and it's in your stomach, isnt it? well then, you got a belly ache. Thanks very much for showing Buster's grave.

Thank you for such a good video, which I stumbled upon by accident. However, I am so pleased I did as Buster Merryfield played Cupid between my parents . He and my mother worked in a bank, after he left the army. My father was a regular customer and after a while Buster dropped a hint to my father and the rest was history. . A few years later they were married then I came along followed by my sister and brother. By then my mother had left the bank and the next she saw of Buster was him appearing on OFAH. Buster was in to his amateur dramatics when he worked in the bank and only went pro after retirement.
Thanks for the vid - and thank you too Buster...RIP.

Can’t believe it’s been 23 yrs since he passed!!! That’s scary….so interesting to hear about his early life…would never have imagined him as a boxer..or teaching things about the army survival in the jungle!! Yes.,it was the chemistry between those three actors that gelled that tv programme into such a hilarious one. A garden centre near me had a yellow three wheeler on the roof and the centre was called “Dell Boys” for a long time. We need more comedy and actors of his style..no swearing, fighting, etc..just good clean comedy.

Fools really got going once Buster joined the show. I was never that keen on Grandad as a character.

I met Buster several times in and around Dorset when I was a child. When I was 16 I had lunch with him at the Agricultural College. He was always jolly, ALWAYS dressed impeccably and a true Gentleman.

Verwood's cemetery has grown a heck of a lot in 30+ years since my mum was laid to rest there. Just a shame the industrial estate can now be seen through the trees on the far left. Certainly are some colour headstones down there. The picture ones are very touching.

Of course the show needs no introduction. I remember feeling so sad when grandad passed. But Buster quickly was written in well. I did hear or read that his last job was as a bank manager before joining Only fools.... Thanks for sharing some of his earlier history, great stuff.

I loved ' the dover sole' as Rodney called him once 😂
He was a better character for me than Grandad although Grandad had had excellent one liners

Myself and my wife at the time in mid 90s were shopping im M&S in Bournemouth when we bumped into uncle Albert. He kindly came over to see our new born and gave £1 for our lads piggy bank.
    R.I.P Buster, and thankyou.

Loved this programme like so many other people.
Could I suggest a video on Bobby Moores grave. He is buried in the City of London Cemetery in Manor Park. Also Jack Cornwell is buried there. He is the youngest person to receive the Victoria Cross as he was aged just 16 years old. He received it posthumously after WW1.
Thank you for your videos Paul. They are just so interesting. 👍😁

Loved Buster RIP old timer. Of interest I live in a place called East Preston right on the Sussex coast. At our local church in the churchyard itself is the final resting place of Lawrence Olivier the world famous actor if you ever want to visit it. 😀

Years ago my dad drove past a cafe in burley where buster sat reading his paper at the same table and I regret to this day not asking my dad to please stop the car. So I can ask buster for his autograph or photograph. We always will remember him because of his white busy beard. But I wish I got his picture taken. Rest in peace for eternity 1920-1999 xx
