'I told you I was ill' is just utterly wonderful, & befitting of his genius.
I remember Spike doing a show in Birmingham in the 80s and tickets were expensive for a lot of people. Spike Milligan arranged for the doors to be opened half way through his performance for the unemployed public to watch the rest of the show. I was one of them, the show was terrific. I particularly remember him reading his poetry. It was awesome. What a nice gesture and what a nice man.

I used to live in Reigate, Surrey in a house once occupied by Spike's family. In one of his books he describes how he visited there when suffering from a bad depressive episode. He said how he slept on the floor in the bay window and I often imagined him laying there. He was a very talented man who didn't have things easy.
Interesting by life’s coincidence that you lived in his ex family home but your right I recall that he suffered from deep bouts of depression but you would never have known from his public facade.
I remember one of his famous odes, “The boy stood on the burning deck whence all but he had fled, What a Prat” 😂
They were a crazy trio. I loved Harry S. laugh. He could brake out in song unexpectedly. Thank you for taking us to Spike’s resting place.

I met Spike shortly before he passed and treasure the autograph I got. You got to admire a man who called Prince Charles a 'grovelling bastard'!
....And Charlie laughed along with the audience...... But, Like Charles...I too was glued to the radio listening to The Goons.
(So much better than the crap we have to endure now.... like "Britain's Got Talent"....see....even the title is a lie!)
Tha last line on the stone reads " Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite" which is Gaelic for "I told You I was ill". Spike always said he wanted that as an Epitaph but the Church Authorities would not allow it to be put on the stone in English
Thank you for that clarification....I was always under the impression, for some reason, that it was on the rear of the headstone.

Your absolutely right! The company I use to work for supplied the stone, I enameled the letter... we applied for the permit and it was refused because of the I told you I was ill... so it was written in Gaelic and was approved!! Lol
Síle (his daughter) is pronounced as Shelagh/Sheila . Definitely doesn't rhyme with mile.

Puckoon is the funniest book I have ever read. Used to get some funny looks when reading it on a train because I was always bursting into laughter 🤣🤣🤣

Spike kinda freaked me out as a kid. It wasn't until I read his war diaries that I realised the depth he had as a writer, fantastic descriptive qualities of Italian locations during the war with more than a few gags thrown in. Human insight too. And who could forget the moment he referred to Prince Charles as.....'a groveling little b*stard!'😂 A comedy great.
Spike has always been a legend to me and I had the privilege of meeting him and shaking his hand at a poetry recital in Enfield in 1990. I remember the year because it was in the middle of Italia 90.
He was the special guest but up until three quarters of the way through it was dull, dull, dull. No sign of the great man then suddenly he appeared at the back! From that moment we were in hysterics.
He read some of his childrens poetry and a heartfelt recollection of the death of his great friend and wartime C/O Anthony Goldsmith in North Africa.
To get to meet and talk to this wonderful actor, singer and musician, author, war veteran and humanitarian is one of the most cherished memories that I will take out of this world. In 2003 when my son was only six months old we visited Winchelsea and payed our respects.
I showed my boy Spike's resting place and Spike my son.
Spikes writings were every bit as good as Roald Dahl's but he was never given his due respect.
Spike, thanks for making me laugh and cry and for making me stop and think.
You ARE Irelands greatest son and the day you left us the world grew a bit colder.

I loved Spike's sense of humour... probably the first comedian that made me laugh out loud.

Spike was my hero growing up and I read all his memoirs many times over.
To find a monument to one of the greatest and most influential comedians of all time you have to go to a quiet, unassuming cemetery in East Sussex. For such a huge character somehow his grave seems rather insignificant and small.
If you’ve never listened to his War Diaries, you’ve missed out on a treat. They are hilarious, sad, scary and simply brilliant. The army barrack humour is unbeatable. I listen to them all 4-5 times a year and still laugh each and every time.
My dad met Spike, whilst in the army. He died in November 2020 at the age of 94 & we played the Ying-tong song at the end of his funeral, as he loved Spike Milligan & the Goon show.
I don't care when I've gone if I offend anyone but I'm so having SEE I TOLD I WAS ILL on my grave stone because I love to make laugh.
Spike to me is an utter legend.

I saw Spike Milligan when I was really young, he was playing 'Jim' in Treasure Island on WestEnd, oh so many years ago. He ad-libbed his way all through it, causing the rest of the cast to be in constant state of giggles. It was brilliant! Loved the Goons too!!
Along with Peter Cook and the Pythons, Spike my comedy hero. A absolute genius. Sadly missed.
Only been twice to the grave but will visit again.
My brother in laws sister used to be his cleaner, the stories she used to tell me about him were very funny and there were times he used to prank her, what a character he was, sadly missed
I've been a life long Spike fan so thank you for the vid, visiting his grave is on my list - it's a shame it looks a bit neglected but I think he would probably find that quite funny. As far as interactions go; I worked at a bookshop here in Bristol in the early 80s where he did a signing of his book of kids poetry. He was on top form and insisted that the kids approached his table without their parents so he could talk to them one to one. He spoke to each one of them and it was amazing to see him chat on their level and how they reacted to him. He also did a proper one man show around that time and I got front row for two nights, again in Bristol. An incredible experience and both performances were completely different. On the second night he proclaimed that he was bored with the show, sat on the edge of the stage, told some very personal stories and took questions from the audience. Genius is a word thrown around a lot, but he certainly was one.
I seem to remember reading something of his and it ended "By Spike Milligna that well known typing error". 🤣

Spike also suffered from really heavy depression too He spoke more about that in later life It always fascinated me that a lot of the great comics had a dark side I suffer myself nothing too heavy but I can empathise totally The Goons were funny Peter Sellers was bi polar I think Now he was dark very deep indeed lol 🍀💭🤔
Nice tribute, thank you. I saw Spike in 1970 at a gig at City Uni in London. I remember at the end he shouted "knock knock" "who's there?" "John" he said, "John who?" Spike said "John the Baptist" and sprayed us with water.
Hi Paul. Another good one! A shame Spike didn’t get his way with his memorial. It’s also a shame that we rarely got to hear him sing properly, especially as he cut his teeth as a jazz singer and musician. I remember watching him on a midweek episode of Parkinson and at the end he sang the show out with Kenny Ball and his Jazz Men, Spike was just amazing! This is the only occasion I can recall of seeing him sing on TV. Also, I was once fishing one evening on Stanmore Common in the late 70’s when an elderly gent stopped to talk. I can not recall his name unfortunately but he told me he was a friend of Spike’s and served with him in the army. He said they would meet up occasionally and on one such occasion not that long before our conversation, the gent told me that Spike had turned up at his house unannounced. The gentleman told me that he asked Spike to accompany him to his daughter’s house so he could introduce Spike to the daughter. Spike agreed and when they got there the gentleman told me that he introduced Spike to his daughter and Spike denied he was Spike Milligan and no amount of cajoling would get Spike to acknowledge that it was indeed him! Lol Typical Spike!

Spike was a Genius,an incredibly funny and clever man.
You missed out his most iconic and, to me , funniest TV comedy programmes The Q SERIES - Q5-Q9 and “There’s a lot of it about” which played on the BBC in the 70s . This is when I discovered the brilliant anarchic and zany humour of Spike and I now have them on DVD and watch them regularly.
A great comedian sadly missed.
My family loved Spike. My brother and I met him at the 'Save the whale' march in Hyde Park around 1982. I still have his autograph in a scrap book next to a photo I took of him. He called me 'Tex' as I was wearing a cowboy hat on the day!
A very funny man! I remember his book of children's rhymes I had as a child. Loved the Ning Ning Ning rhyme 🤣🤣🤣. Also I once had a book by him called Tombstone humour!! Quite apt for this 🤣🤣

Spike had a house in Hadley/Barnet that looked like a church near my Nan's house. There was always a Mini parked outside which made me chuckle because he could have had any car but chose a Mini.
There's a story about Sellers buying a Rolls Royce and discovering a leak or funny noise. He visits Milligan at 2 a.m. Sellers drives around with Milligan in the boot which is believed to be the source of theproblem. Sellers gets pulled over by the police. Copper opens the boot,sees Milligan, says, "Oh, it's you."

Spike came out with a classic when he was informed of Peter Seller's death, they were due to meet the next day for dinner and when he found out he'd just died he said " Typical Seller's, anything to get out of paying for the meal!"

Great comedian was Spike, missed his work since, I very often watch videos on you tube with him in it, I grew up with Spike on the radio and it’s was hilarious.

Landport and Allders in Portsmouth god I’m getting old ,I used to love the Christmas rides they put in every year when I was a kid, I think since Debenhams went under its now being turned in to student flats .

It's a beautiful churchyard and also contains the grave of Sir James Martin who co-founded the Martin Baker aircraft ejection seat company. The church has also appeared in many films as Pinewood isn't far up the road.👍
Strangly I always find myself drinking coffee watching your uploads, so many talented stars you cover, RIP to them all, they gave us all amazing memories, the crime ones you cover most taken to soon, and in such tragic ways. Rip to them too.
Mrs H .....Loved Spike Milligan...He was a very funny guy but I can't help feeling for his kids when it came to all they Father's memorabilia being sold off...I find that extremely sad....RIP Spike...

Technically your videos are very basic but this actually makes them feel much more focused on the person you talking about. Sometimes simplicity is so much more powerful! My first memory of Spike Milligan is in 1981 as a young 6 year old hearing the Goons song Ying Tong Song on the radio, I had no idea what it was about but the sheer silliness of the noises they were making tickled my young and impressionable funny bone and it cracked me right up! :D
I loved Spike when I was a kid too, he & Harry Secombe used to laugh so much you could hardly understand them, but they always made me laugh, that daft song he did is so unique, funny & child like, no wonder he appealed to me! I wish his kids had had his belongings, sent to a the auction house, that's terrible, it sounds like his kids were right, she just wanted his money. Sad how some people act when they're near death. 🌺 RIP Spike 🌺

A comic genius, I wrote to spike many years ago, and asked if he would be so kind to send me a signed photograph, and he did, I used to write to the stars as a hobby, got quite a lot of signed photographs, some no longer with us, and some are.
I thought his head stone said “I told you I was ill”. Don’t know where I got that. I absolutely adored him. Totally his own person in a world that I would love to be in 🧙🏻♀🧙🏻♀💐💐

My husband inherited all his uncles goons albums one of them has the ying tong song on it. They were the original young ones. Mad as March hares but so funny. They don’t make em like that anymore. RIP Spike laughing with your fellow goons now all together again. Bet they said what took you so long.
In the late 70's I was standing in line in a fish and chip shop in Noosa. I thought it looked like Spike in front of me. I said to the person with me "It isn't is it?" Spike turned around with a smile on his face and said "It is!" He was a very funny man.

Yet another performer I worked with as an extra on his Q tv show some 40 years ago; this is beginning to make me feel old.
Spike planted a tree outside a nursery in Rushey Green, Catford only a few Streets form where I grew up on. Also the boys school where spike once attended ( demolished in 94 I think) was also a stone throw from I had grown up.
He was amazing, rip Spike xx

I remember the Yin Tong Song and where I really started to love his sense of humour was the BBC's Q series which he had the comedic line every so often would end with "What are we going to do now....." and repeat

@@terrymurphy2032 I believe Michael Bentine ( Now there was another comedy genius AND a very intelligent man too, ) left The Goons early, whether it was an 'amicable separation' or not I don't know.
@@Mackeson3 With Bentine it meant there was two highly talented leading comedy writers and not enough room
for both so Michael left to pursue his own career. His wartime recollections are every bit as funny as Spikes but should probably have been filed under 'fiction'.

A great video! Spike is a comedy hero of mine, I’ve read his wartime memoirs and have all the Goon Shows radio shows! They’re absolutely brilliant. His mental problems were caused by his wartime experiences, we call it PTSD now, and I think his style of comedy and wit were his way of dealing with it! Thank you for sharing this with us all! I look forward to seeing more!
