    This is the best video I've seen on TH-cam for a home mechanic to follow and be able to do a fairly complex repair. This video will save lots of people lots of money if they have the ability. This deserves thousands of up votes and the few down votes mystify me. Excellent work. Thanks again!

    Finally a real Technician ! . . . I am a retired old school RR tech so not familiar with these new systems - My daughter's 2009 Corolla recently developed a severe power loss condition - starts easily but no real power any more. She was told that her best option was - get an exchange engine ! My problem with that solution is - - it's a total COP OUT ! . . . real techs don't do that sort of thing - we fix the problem . . . Thank you for showing me that this problem is fixable - - - TIME TO GET THE TOOLS OUT AND PUT THEM TO WORK !

    THANKS AGAIN! I just got around to doing my sons corolla. I watched your video 10 times to make sure I was comfortable. I just replace the gear with the most updated one. God I hope they reengineered it! It’s was a little scary seeing those cams pop up when you take the last caps off. It did make the grinding noise the very first time I started it but I’ll wait and see if it does it after it sits. If the noise comes back..... it’s going to the grave with the noise!
    10/21/19 update, no grinding noise so far so good.

    Oscar, to unlock the timing gear you need to use air pressure and electric tape trick. There are several videos here on TH-cam that I found for references on how to do it for other installations I’ve done. At 23:03 you see me pull a screen filter out of the main cam cap. This system runs on oil pressure so you want to confirm it’s not clogged up. Good catch, your the first to ask me about that. Thanks again and just message me if you have any other questions.

    • @sandersautosolutions4246
      @sandersautosolutions4246  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Scrape N Bass, You raise a great question. How do you really tell which cam gear. I’ve heard of people replacing both to resolve this issue. The problem is that the parts are really expensive and it is not necessary to replace the exhaust cam gear. Today most people want to fix it for the least amount of money. I’m just like most people too. Toyota compiles tons of repair data from 100s of service departments worldwide. They release Technical Service Bulletins that includes proven fixes to their techs to help resolve issues faster. Per Toyota’s TSB the exhaust cam gear is not necessary to be replaced. You can email me your vehicle year, make, and model to sandersautosolutions@gmail.com and I will be happy to email you the TSB from Alldata. This is open to anyone reading this. If you need this info just email me and I’ll send it over to you. I appreciate you watching my video and taking the time to message me.

      @sandersautosolutions4246  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thank you for watching my video. Many people have made it clear how my video editing is not up to their standards. I even removed the video for awhile because of all the negative comments I was receiving. I do apologize for not stressing how important it is to make sure the cam gear is in the unlocked position. In the video it’s around the 20:45. It must be unlocked before torquing it or you can damage it or/and it won’t unlock with the supplied oil pressure from the VVTI oil control solenoid. I made this video trying to follow the TSB released from Toyota. You may want to check online for TSB’s for your Prius. In the TSB it should have the repair procedure for your car if they have one out for it. I’ve been away from the shop/office because of the winter storm, but will check Alldata and let you know if I can help with more details for you. Thanks again... and I really like your screen name. Perfect for the times we’re living in.

    If your video views seemed to skyrocket over the past week or two that would be me. I watched this thing so many times to make sure I understood exactly what I was getting ready to do. It worked great. There was some work performed out of frame but it wasn't difficult to figure out. A couple things I noted along the way, releasing the tensioner is performed by rotating the crankshaft counterclock about 90deg until you hear it disengage the hook. I'm not sure what you did with the screwdriver except maybe disengage the hook manually. Also the torque value for the 13 cover screws is 7ft lbs.
    You saved me a ton of money and she purrs like a kitty. Hats off, I regret that I only have one upvote to give.

    Can u guys answer my question ?!!!!!
    Changing the camshaft for engine rattle does this effect the engine performance???!!!!!

    • @sandersautosolutions4246
      @sandersautosolutions4246  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Habib, I appreciate you watching my video. Changing the camshaft should not effect engine performance as long as you go with the same camshaft. If you get one with bigger lobes it will change the performance. The camshaft does not have anything to do with the start up rattle. It is caused by the VVT-I Cam Gear that is bolted to the Camshaft. If you change the VVT-I Cam Gear and are having performance issues confirm the timing marks line up and that the VVT-I Cam Gear was not installed to the camshaft in the locked position. If it was installed in the locked position it will not move freely to advance and retard the timing and will cause performance issues. If you have any other questions or need any other info on the repair I will be happy to help. Thanks

      @@habibkhan-xo5ox, So sorry to hear about your Corolla. Toyota released a Technical Service Bulletin that pin points the start up rattle noise to just the VVT-I Intake Gear. Not the Camshafts. I do have this TSB and will be happy to email it you you. As far as your hard start after warm up, it could be several different things causing it. My opinion would to be to check fuel pressure when the fuel pump is warmed up in the same scenario. It may be getting weak after warm causing the hard start. If you have any engine trouble codes they may help to further diagnose it. Thanks again, Tom Sanders

I have read some people claim its a 3000-4000 dollar repair at a dealership and they have to completely remove the engine from the car and all that. Based on your video it seems to be a much simpler and hopefully much more affordable job to take care of. Thanks for posting.

      Hi TracyinKy, I’ve heard some customers say they’ve had the rattle for awhile, not an exact specific amount of time disclosed though. I assume it will all depend on the severity of the condition of the VVTI gear. I don’t see how it could be good for the timing chain and plus the added stress on the chain guides and tensioner. These are interference engines which means if any thing happens with the timing chain the top of the piston could hit the bottom of the valve which could cause a catastrophic engine failure. I would recommend getting it fixed as soon as you are able. Don’t get any cheap VVTI gears from eBay. They are junk. Most of them have been superseded, but they are still selling them. Get the most up to date part number for your specific vehicle from Toyota. Thanks for watching my video and if you have any other questions just message me.

      I think it does. I lived with my rattle for 6 years (49k to 90k miles) and every few months it would drag and stall my engine. Sometimes I would get a loud whizzing sound instead of the rattle, almost like plastic gears being stripped at high speed. Finally the other day it made the whizzing sound and was running but something was pinging around under the hood, just like a pebble in a tin can. I still don't know what that was. I replaced the gear, fired it up, she ran great but I still had the rattle for about 5 minutes, then it blew into my catalytic converter and finally all the way out. She runs great now.
      So to answer your question, yes, I think whatever causes that noise is bad for the engine although you may not have big issues for a while.

    Mr. Sanders, after the new Cam gear is reattached to the camshaft and before reinstalling back in the head, do you need to unlock or lock the cam gear for timing mark purposes? Also, before reinstalling the timing chain tensioner, do you retract the plunger and lock in place with side mounted clip?

    • @sandersautosolutions4246
      @sandersautosolutions4246  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ron, torque the cam gear in the unlocked position to the camshaft. Then move to the locked position before installing back into the head. For the tensioner, install it with the plunger locked all the way in. Once installed and ready for tension on the chain I used a long screwdriver to push in on the chain and chain guide to unlock the tensioner.

    • @ronrandall7118
      @ronrandall7118 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr. Sanders, today I got my camshaft and gear out of my engine head. I hand tightened the bolt in the unlocked cam gear position, but when I went to torque it to 40 foot lbs., the cam gear moved to the locked position. This happened to me twice. I was able to get it unlocked once by watching a TH-cam video where a guy put black electrical tape around the holes on the cam and applied air to the hole for advance. But know I can't get the cam gear to unlockon the second try. I seen another video where the guy uses a different method. Hope it works. Anyways, any explanation why the cam gear went to the locked position while tightening the cam bolt? Only thing I can think of is perhaps my torque wrench maybe out of calibration and over torqued the bolt and caused it to move to the locked position.

    I took apart the cam gear after removing it and found that one of the 4 cogs of the inner gear (the one directly fixed to the camshaft) had completely cracked through along its width. I believe that had allowed oil to completely drain out of that passage when sitting for a period of time, and the resulting lack of lubrication was the source of that cold-start noise. I had no choice but to purchase a new gear assembly to fix the problem but that took care of the issue.
    The problem was completely self contained within the assembly and doesnt have to be repaired (just irritating to listen to every coldstart.)
    I would guess the broken cog is the source of most cold start rattles
