    I tried to grasp info, in my case i have one that it had burnt oil on it, it was washed with a solvent solution and a hot bath at the machine shop but i still see burnt oil on some holes so i am thinking i will have to take it apart and clean it inside; this does not shows that but it shows some info i can use to put it back together i guess. Thanks for the video!

      @@kesu90 Yes. The car was just put back on the road last 18, so far it is working, had some VVTi related code but I think it was due to oil not being at the required capacity; I put 3.9 quarters as required by manual but then drove 150 miles and seems there was some new oil consumption lowering oil level about half quarter, as soon as i filled it to point on the oil dip stick, cleared the code and it has not come back yet seems that was the issue; that sprocket I took it apart and expended like 4 or 5 hours cleaning and putting back together then in the camshaft making sure it would work. Mechanics recommend to just get a new one and install but I cleaned mine even assembled with one bolt from autozone as I damaged one bolt taking it apart, seems to be working fine but still not enough miles in the engine since back together to tell for sure.

    Question: when doing a timing and VVT actuator replacement, do I have to remove the camshaft from the vehicle? Or what if I unlock the new actuator and installed it to the camshaft already bolted to the engine?

    Bro! Literally the same thing happened to me. I bought a 2009 Toyota Camry with a blown head gasket to fix and sell. I ended up getting a whole other refurbished head from the machine shop that came with the cams and gears already. I put it all together and just like you said it runs fine and has full power but that damn p0012 code keeps coming back. I’m sure the machine shop didn’t do the unlock and lock procedure when installing the vvt gear. I thought maybe I messed up the timing but the car ran fine. I even replaced the oil control valve thinking that that would fix the check engine light. Now thanks to you I know the procedure to install the vvt gear and will do that so I can finally be done with the car!!! So just to be clear I have to unlock it, torque it, then lock it. Right? And I can do all of that with the vvt attached to the cam shaft just with that bolt hand tight. Am I right???

    • @SuperDjnrg
      @SuperDjnrg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you are correct. Don't forget to clean or replace vvt filter. It's under the first cam journal where you see a nipple in the middle of the journal.

      good question. I didn’t do the unlocking and then locking procedure. I just pulled the intake camshaft with a gear attached to it from the junk yard and installed it on my Corolla.
      Sure enough I got the check engine light on with a P0017 code. I’m going to follow the unlock/lock procedure in this video to see if it fixes the check engine light.
      Funny thing is my car is running ok but I can tell it’s not working as efficiently as it should be.

    I still don´t understamd the procdure, what makes the difference to tighening in unlock then locked position. Why does this make a mechanical difference? After all you turn locked an built in. So why?

    • @SuperDjnrg
      @SuperDjnrg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's in the tech manual to perform this procedure. You would have to ask Toyota.

    • @teeman1494
      @teeman1494 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do not unlock before you torque the sprocket, you risk ruining the vvt lock pin inside the sprocket because all the torquing force is exerted on the lock pin since it holds the sprocket gear and its inner vane together while in the locked position. You can look up a teardown video of a vvt sprocket gear to better understand this.

    • @thorstenpannwitz2345
      @thorstenpannwitz2345 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teeman1494 If so then the vvt-i shouldn´t be working direct after installing. Moreover i thing they simply constructed it poor because the hole(bore of the pin is washing out and not round after some working hours. But they don´t want to tell the customer.

    DOES IT HAVE TO BE INSTALLED UNLOCKED?

    • @DevJB
      @DevJB หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The point of installing it while unlocked is for when you torque it down it doesn't ruin the lock pin.
      After the vvt phaser bolt is torqued, then you hand turn this phaser clockwise to relock it.
      There is a hex feature on the camshaft that you should also hold with a wrench to stop movement of torque on the camshaft when you torque this phaser bolt.
      On Alloytec and Ecotec engines I don't perform this, on Toyota I do because most of these (especially on 1.8L) have a faulty intake phaser "numerous revisions" to begin with and will need the updated vvt phaser, retimed, and new tensioner. They are sensitive and expensive.

    • @SuperDjnrg
      @SuperDjnrg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Thaman and also I believe they remain locked once the engine stops running they operate off of oil pressure low low oil pressure will keep the cam gear lock higher oil pressure will unlock it.

      Dan Thaman. I have a camry and I was getting a knocking noise. I replace this vvt gear and it still made the noise. Turned out to be the vvt screen clogged which was behind the Power steering pump.

    • @SuperDjnrg
      @SuperDjnrg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Thaman yes change both gears, also check the vvt filter under the first cam journal if you look at the journal from the top you will see a nipple in the middle its derectly under it also dont forget to make sure the orings between the first journal and the valve cover are new. If not it will loose oil pressure at the vvt solenoids.
