Your analytics are right on, Matt. It would be a waste upon returning home to Great Britain with a plethora of not fun days as a memory of this great adventure. Keep choosing to enjoy each moment. Love tagging along. Thanks and best...pops
Thank you sooooo much for this great series! I was dreaming of doing the GDMBR for some time, but was afraid for the distances, climbs and doing it on my own. And there you are! Showing how it is possible in a relaxt way. That you don’t have to be a pro like Ryan van Duzer (who I also love watching!) And that there’s small towns for food and water and campsite’s in a nice distance from each other. I can do this! And I will! THANK YOU! 🙏🏼😊👍🏻
Hi. I'm glad you've been reassured by watching these videos. I am definitely not a pro like Duzer and I survived. You'll definitely love it out there. It's incredible. If you have any questions just ask...Thanks for watching 👍👍
Epic drone shots! It’s so very beautiful out there. Unbelievable. I’ve decided to go and do it in 2024! Start in Banff/Canmore and bike to Colorado. 😃 Am gonna ask you some random questions every now and then. Here are some: Did you also saw solo female bikers every now and then? Did you have a alarm/sos device? If so, what did you take? Stupid question perhaps, but what about bears if you are having lunch in the middle of nowhere? Does the smell of food attract them, or is it mainly at campsites that you have to be very careful with your food? Thanks again for your advice! Oh, and when are you in Holland? And where are you planning to go? I live in Utrecht, you’re welcome for a coffee, meal or warm shower if you’re in the neighborhood.
Hi. It's great to hear that you're heading out in 2024. You'll love it. I'm always happy to answer any questions. I didn't see many solo female riders, probably three or four. Most people end up in small groups anyway (including myself). I took a Garmin Inreach Messenger. It has the SOS function but I also had it tracking me so friends and family could see exactly where I was. I didn't worry so much about attracting bears when stopping to eat. I was more concerned about surprising them. I think that's the biggest problem. A lot of campsites have bear boxes and, if they don't, provided toy hang your food away from camp I think you're fine. I was always a little worried though. I kept bear spray with me the whole time until I reached Pinedale. I hope that helps. I was due to get into Holland last week but my plans changed. I'll be over early in the new year for a quick trip. I hope to spend more time over in Europe next year so will keep your offer in mind. Thanks 👍👍👍
I’m watching this entire series all the way through a second time…and find it just as enjoyable as the first time. Such an epic ride to go on. Maybe someday I will get a chance to do it as well.😊
Another great video and the scenery is epic as you say. Love the small towns in the middle of nowhere, gives me a huge incentive to get back on my bike for an adventure once my collarbone heals. Thanks Mat, keep enjoying your rides 👍
The small towns are without question my favourite part of this whole trip. I'm in Atlantic City (population about 50) and it's such a fascinating place. Thanks for commenting 👍
Look at you! Not only a humorous fellow but musical too, nice piano playing! I love small towns, especially remote ones. Thanks for sharing and don't melt out there! Looking forward to the next episode! :) :)
It is getting hotter! I'll try not to melt. That's the only thing I can play on the piano. I'll learn the rest of it some day. The small towns are definitely the best and most interesting.
I had a work appointment in a medium far away town, so I decided to go by bike and make an overnighter before. When I returned via train, TH-cam send the notification for this new video. Now I’m tired and grateful. Grateful for my kilometers yesterday and for your miles we are all keen to watch.
What a great comment!!! Thanks. It genuinely makes me happy to hear when people enjoy these videos. Thanks for following, and for being a regular commenter. Cheers 👍
I wonder if that will have an effect. I didn't even think about it. Caroline (my partner/girlfriend) watches his videos and then messages me where he stopped, resupplied etc. It's like having a guide.
Brilliant again Mat, glad you’re enjoying it, I think you should savour every minute and relax. Breathe it all in. You’re not missing the dreadful weather here I’m sure. Great stuff
Binge watched all of these over the last 2 days, epic. It’s a bucket list ride for me but maybe when the kids don’t need me for two months! Keep digging in Mat, looking forward to the next video 🏴
haha, I loved your, "...my responsibility" comment regarding the old tripod. Excellent video, thanks for the memories. In 2021 at Wise River we were coughing on smoke from the forest fires. Lima was a blast, took a day off there due to a big storm rolling in. The gas station and Jan's Cafe were great! Excellent video!
The tripod is still going. Just getting more and more battered!! Lima was a great stop. We've been lucky with forest fires so far. Hopefully that luck continues. Cheers 👍👍
Hey Bert, your going well 👍 I have to keep reminding myself to calm down and enjoy the ride too when bikepacking, rather than just smashing out the miles....... Keep up the good work. Best. Ernie
Mat, these are great! I’ve recommended your channel to a friend to watch as we have serious discussion about doing the GDMBR. Your pace and mindset are exactly the example I’d like to follow. Can’t wait for the next videos…
I hope you slow down, long enough to enjoy Idaho and don't just skip across it. The section you are about to hit is probably my favorite. My first bikepack trip was from Island Park ID to Elk Lake MT. Which is tucked off the road there in the Centennial Valley. The Island Park to Warm River is gorgeous! I guess I will find out in the next episode.
We did seem to dart on and straight out of Idaho. I remember enjoying it for the short while we were there. It would be nice if they extended the route into Idaho for a bit longer. Cheers 👍
In reference to the road sign, all shot up. Welcome to America. We have a lot of things that are "all shot up". Your response to this makes me think your country sounds lovely. Ride on Mat, Ride on.
I really look forward to seeing these videos. It’s one of the things I’ve wanted to do for a long while and rapidly climbing to the top of the list thanks to your videos and showing me it’s possible to take the time out and do it.
Dubois on the hy 26 7 miles past Lava mt lodge is a great small town to have a day off I stopped there in the church hall (warm shower host)2018 trans-am ride.
Your Drone shots are SPECTACULAR! Continue to put your health ( mental and physical) #1 . The finish line will come to you one day. Just gotta keep moving for forward
Yes mate, just discovered you, if thats the right description. Out of my league TBH, money.. I'm ex forces and now 67 yo. Before that I back packed the ME
Another wonderful video, you seem to get a perfect balance of information and entertainment, even as someone with no plans to go on a ride like this myself, not anymore, it is nice to get the information about the towns and the different aspects of the trail just to build the full picture. You do seem to have found a groove in this one, I did think on a couple of occasions in the previous couple of videos that you looked a little disquieted, understandably so though given the physical challenge of what you are doing. After viewing for a while I wonder if I could make one request of you, do consider your nutrition for the days where you won't be making it into a town for a proper meal, I still feel hungry having a pack of those instant noodles after a day of doing very little, I can't imagine they go too far in replenishing you after a full day of riding.
You're entirely right. I'm not eating nearly enough food whilst out of town. I'm aiming to carry more food from now on. I eat quite a few bars/nuts through the day which just about keeps me going. Apparently, 300 calories per hour is the correct intake. That would be a struggle. I've noticed, through watching my own videos, that I struggle with the heat. The last three days have unfortunately been extremely hot.
There's no relative about it, I was a total newb going into it! I had done a lot of research though, and having walked the Appalachian trail a few years back I was confident that I was at least mentally prepared for the challenges of a long trail. I'm also learning a lot as I go, it's been brilliant though. Thank you for watching.
Do this old sock a favor and take occasional shots of your tyres so we can see the wear as you go. Your content is fantastic. You had my wife in stitches on the other episode with the "just gravely" comment.
I'm eating a terrible overpriced pie from a gas station and if I survive I'll film the back tyre for you. I have to confess, I can't remember a 'just gravely'' comment but I'm glad it was funny. Cheers 👍👍
Really enjoying the journey - quite an epic ride beautifully filmed and narrated. I have a bike and must get out on it again! Keep it up - as others have said, you’re an inspiration…best wishes from Cumbria
It's great to see comments like this. I genuinely love the idea that people might get out because they've been inspired by my videos. Thanks for following along 👍
I am the same. Want to go to the Swiss valleys with my bike and enjoy riding my bike. But then I am rushing and don't see shit. But you cannot do anything we are made like this. :D
Enjoy. As a fellow Brit who has done a 1500 mile section of that ride, my advice is to chill out and try and forget about everything. I too suffer with the exact same problem when I cycle tour. It’s not a race.
Good advice. Thanks. Which section did you ride? I'm doing my best not to overthink everything but am still tending to rush to the end point of the day. I'm getting better at slowing down though. Thanks for commenting 👍
@@matryderadventures it’s a really tough one. Unfortunately, I have a very active mind and struggle to switch off and enjoy the ‘now’. The mind always thinks about things back home. I did Helena to Salida.
We've ridden that section from Elkhorn Hot Springs to the Tetons twice and are planning on doing it again in August. We love that area. Thanks for the video. We usually stay in the hotel in Lima, maybe we'll try the cabins this time.
The cabins were excellent so I'd give them a try. It's a really beautiful section of trail so I can see why you enjoy doing it. Have a good trip and thanks for commenting. I really appreciate it 👍👍
Heeeee Matt!!! Just saying hello from the same Warmshowers host you stayed at in Butte! John B. Haven’t met him yet, he will arrive after midnight so I see him tomorrow. Sitting at his table now and wanted to check what’s in store for me the coming days so looked at your video again. 😊 It is so great being here! And this video also reassured me a bit of the route to come. I was a little afraid of the long endless stretches, but now I’m looking forward to it. Thanks again so much for inspiring me to do this! Oh and I just need to tell you: you’re famous! Every GDMBR-rider I talk to and tell you and Ryan van Duzer were my inspiration know the both of you! You’re a real influencer. Ain’t that great?! 😂 I wish you all the best on your trip to come. When I get back home I will watch that series! I’m planning to go to Jackson, not all the way to Antelope Wells. But I’m taking it slow, so will take some more weeks. 😊 Bye, bye 👋🏻👋🏻 Astrid from The Netherlands
Hi Astrid. I never met John either but he's an absolute legend. I had a great stay there. It genuinely makes me happy to hear that the videos are helpful. It sounds like you're having a great time out there. Me, famous 😂😂. I'm around 250 miles into the TransAm and it's going great. Keep me posted as to how your trip is going. It's great hear from you.
You’re making Gabe get out on his bike! We love watching you on your journey. It was so nice seeing you a lot more comfortable in you skin and going with the flow. Loved the Gerber beard trim! How’s your saddle sores? Hope you’ve managed to get a new mattress?!! Made me think of one I slept on at a county scout camp at Ragley Hall last year, went pop very loudly in the middle of the night! Woke lots of Beavers, Cubs & Scouts up 😂 That deserted gold mining village was awesome, but creepy! x
Hey Suze. Say Hi to Gabe for me. Good to hear I'm inspiring him 🤣. The saddle sores are......... managed!!! I'm dealing with them and I think things are getting better. As for the mattress, I haven't managed to replace it yet so sleep is challenging. It hasn't popped yet!!!!! Cheers Suze.
Another great episode. I enjoy your insight and sharing of your adventure. I finished the Tour Divide this year and watching your ride is stirring up so many memories and reflection of the ride I did. I'm also making some videos of my journey. Episode 1 and 2 released if you ever get bored and would like to see my perspective. :) Carry on Mat! Safe travels and talk soon!
So now we know that you are an accomplished pianist. Ivory tickler, needlework craftsman, Sesame street voiceover, is there no end to your talents... Curious as to why you quote your distance in miles but your ascent in metres 🤔 Another great video Mat, and a nod must be nodded to Ross also 🚴♂️👍
I use metric for nearly all measurements, but haven't quite got used to the transition from miles to kilometres for distance, I think it's probably as road signs in the UK are all still in miles/mph. I think my true talent is my ability to take create the illusion of talent! Thank you for watching 👍
Yep there's a lot of meters to get up, I think around 45,000 in total, I'm feeling each one! It's Moonlight Sonata, the piano isn't really my instrument, but I learnt the opening of this a few years ago so I can give the illusion of being able to play! Thanks again for watching and commenting.
Those views are awesome. Hopefully, you didn't shatter the North bounders dreams but telling them about the uphill that they are about to face! It all looks like your non plan is going to plan. It's great news. Keep it up😊 Ps, you can't rely on those tripod things. You should have packed your faithful stick. I believe it would not have let you down 😂
Hi Mat, thank you again for the very nice info. Did you ride the Milwaukee Railroad so you came over the trestle bridge (Blacktail Viaduct)? How was the connection at Pipestone Pass where the trails end? Easy to ride? Is the Milwaukee Railroad now part of the GDMBR or is it your own initiative?
Hi. I follow the official GDMBR route and have not taken any alternatives. I'm afraid to say I don't really know where I've been other than that. Everything is completely new to me. I'll look into your questions properly and get back to you. As for that general section, I don't remember any difficult bits..sorry for the vague reply. Thanks for following 👍👍
@@matryderadventures Hi Matt, this is new to me. The single track you showed us is very nice! As far as I know, the GDMBR follows the Blacktail Creek (Mount HWY 2 W, Roosevelt Drive, Highland Road and Moose Creek Road) until Highland Trailhead. But that has apparently changed. Highland Trailhead is the place where you say "anyway we're at the top look at this".
I remember where you mean. I definitely followed the ACA route so they must have altered the route. I'll still check the map when I have chance. Are you considering riding the GDMBR ?
@@billbike9573 That singletrack is called the grading camp trail and herman gulch trail to Roosevelt drive. search for Thomson park for more details. going this way you miss the blacktail trestle.
@@matryderadventures Yes, probably next year (northbound). Only: I'm worried about the high temperatures. Was that also the case in previous years? Over the whole gdmbr it is now about 85 Fahrenheit. In mid-May 2023 it was already so hot in New Mexico. On the routes where there is no water, you should therefore take a lot of water with you.
Thanks. The drone definitely captures the views better than the GoPro. The pedals are MKS Lambda. They don't have the pins so I don't cut myself to shreds and they're definitely grippy enough for this trail. Cheers 👍👍
I only took 4. I uploaded to the cloud as and when I could so Ross could edit close to real time. There were plenty of opportunities to get a decent WiFi signal. GoPro offer unlimited cloud storage with a subscription. Glad to hear you enjoy the videos. It's an epic trip. You'll love it. Cheers 👍
You’re doing a great job! I really enjoy your story/reporting. From ride to camp, your narrative is raw and reflective. It’s inspiring. What handlebars are you riding with? Do you use the horns?
Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. I'm being honest about the whole trip. The bars are Velo Orange Crazy bars. I didn't think I would use the horns much but I use them all the time, especially on road miles. Cheers 👍
Thankfully I only have to film and upload the footage. That's definitely enough work for me. Ross does all of the editing back in the UK. It's a joint venture. It means we can keep this series pretty much up to date. Cheers 👍
Thanks so much for the awesome video. Maybe a silly question, but at the campsite outside of Lima where did you end up storing your food to keep it away from critters?
It was tricky but there was a steep bank with a convenient boulder which I hid my food bag behind. It wasn't ideal but was well away from the campsite. It was the best I could do. Cheers 👍
The gear and bike have been great, I went into it a bit at the end of the last video, but I haven't had one mechanical issue with the bike. The only issues I've had have been with my airbed (which I did use for the whole AT a few years back, and plenty since then as well), and my stove (again, used for the AT), so I can't complain at all. A mixture of good luck and good prep I think, hopefully it continues!
Love watching your videos, very informative but your diet is so self destructive. Sugar, sugar, sugar, no wonder you're dehydrated all the time. I know used to be same way.
Wait a minute…you ride a bike and play the piano? Be still my heart ❤😊😅
Loving the video series. Such an accomplishment.
Thanks. I'm glad you like them.

I think you're right. It's my mission to slow down.....Cheers 👍
It is so great being here!
I wish you all the best on your trip to come. When I get back home I will watch that series! I’m planning to go to Jackson, not all the way to Antelope Wells. But I’m taking it slow, so will take some more weeks. 😊
Bye, bye 👋🏻👋🏻
Astrid from The Netherlands
Woke lots of Beavers, Cubs & Scouts up 😂
That deserted gold mining village was awesome, but creepy! x
I'll definitely have a look at your channel. Congratulations on finishing!! I'm guessing you're pace was considerably faster than mine.
So now we know that you are an accomplished pianist. Ivory tickler, needlework craftsman, Sesame street voiceover, is there no end to your talents...
Curious as to why you quote your distance in miles but your ascent in metres 🤔
Another great video Mat, and a nod must be nodded to Ross also 🚴♂️👍
I use metric for nearly all measurements, but haven't quite got used to the transition from miles to kilometres for distance, I think it's probably as road signs in the UK are all still in miles/mph. I think my true talent is my ability to take create the illusion of talent! Thank you for watching 👍
@@matryderadventures yes, that's probably it, UK road signs.
Well, keep up the illusions, they're very entertaining!
Bloody hell mate you’re doing some climbs …what was that you played on the piano pls 👍🏻🍻🚴
@@matryderadventures lol one meter at a time mate 👍🏻🚴
Those views are awesome. Hopefully, you didn't shatter the North bounders dreams but telling them about the uphill that they are about to face!
It all looks like your non plan is going to plan. It's great news. Keep it up😊
Ps, you can't rely on those tripod things. You should have packed your faithful stick. I believe it would not have let you down 😂
Ahhh my trusty stick. I should have brought it. 'non plan going to plan' 🤣.
Glad made it through the peril! Gonna order my aeropack soon, presume you are using the 10L mini panniers?
They are the 10 litre panniers. I'm very happy with the whole Aerospace system. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures awesome thanks mate!
Thanks for the video Mat! The wide drone shot was EPIC! :) Question - what pedals are you using on the Sonder?
Thanks. The drone definitely captures the views better than the GoPro. The pedals are MKS Lambda. They don't have the pins so I don't cut myself to shreds and they're definitely grippy enough for this trail. Cheers 👍👍
How many micro SD cards did you take, use for all your videos? Planning on doing this one days. Love your videos.
Cheers 👍
Can your drone do follow me that would be cool on those trails
It can do the follow me thing and I'll use it when it's up next.
Love this series. How are you managing to upload and edit the videos while your on the road?
Thankfully I only have to film and upload the footage. That's definitely enough work for me. Ross does all of the editing back in the UK. It's a joint venture. It means we can keep this series pretty much up to date. Cheers 👍
Well done on the piano. How have the directions been? Easy to follow?
Thanks. It's about all I can play. I've followed the ACA route maps which I downloaded. They've been great.
Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures thanks so much for the info and the great videos. I love your comments and dry humor too.
How is all the kit and bike holding up? All though I've done it (GDMBR 2017), I am still so jealous!
Where in Wales are you from Mat?
Cardiff. I live over on the east coast of England now.
@@matryderadventures nice Porthcawl here but live in NZ now, keep up the miles👍
New Zealand and Porthcawl are kind of similar 🤣
@@matryderadventures totally!
As i said do it by time not by miles
Love watching your videos, very informative but your diet is so self destructive. Sugar, sugar, sugar, no wonder you're dehydrated all the time. I know used to be same way.
I'm terrible at eating properly. I'll continue to work on it. Cheers 👍
