What a treat! John and Mira ❤! Windy Wyoming! Idaho Spuds! And both have monstrous mosquitoes. I had to get a new tire in Pinedale. The problem was that it was 2021, and supply chain issues meant no good tire options. I ended up with the nobbiest rear tire I have ever seen! Only option the guys in Pinedale had. That tire was rough to get moving. At that point my fatbike would have been a better option! I made it two more days after Pinedale to Lava Mountain Lodge. You're absolutely right. Rushing this trail would be a real shame. I'm really taking my time now. Another day off tomorrow. John is seriously fit! 100 miles a day with all the extra weight. Amazing. Thanks for following along 👍
Well Mat... welcome to Idaho! My home state!! Glad you changed your mind about this place 😂. Been to Red Rock Pass a hundred times. We pick huckleberries nere there. Henry's Lake is my favorite fly fishing spot. Wish you could have stopped for a burger and tater tots. The worlds best spuds are indeed grown here! Your neros were fun. I carry a small umbrella so that I can always find shade. Put a t-shirt on top of the umbrella for max shade. The brolly is also handy as a wind block. And, a quick shelter to get out of the rain, somewhat. Cheers and thanks for sharing your journey.
That is a good idea, I took an umbrella on the AT with me but didn't think of it for a bikepacking tour, the shade would be nice though. Thank you for watching.
You're doing so well Mat! I tend to get very scatter brained when bikepacking especially trying to keep all my gear organized and accounted for. I'm amazed that you're able to coordinate the filming & drone on top of planning your route each day, cooking, eating, showering, filtering water, and rechargering your portable chargers and accessories! I'm sure you're aware that the trails are very rough when you to get New Mexico! Traveling Thru on TH-cam indicated that a lot of cyclists deviate onto the roads as the trail becomes quite rutted and rocky, it's very exposed terrain and it's often hot as heck or rainy as all get out over there. Plus there's a strech of 130 miles where there are few if any resupply points. But I"m sure you'll continue to make the best & safest choices! Keep up the great work and momentum.
Thanks. The organisation is a bit of a challenge but I've found a routine that seems to work. I'm going to wait until I'm closer to New Mexico before making any decisions about alternate routes. I'd love to stick to the main route but that peanut butter mud is unrideable so I may divert. Thanks for commenting 👍
I thought you could fly your drone up ahead and hover it in position for some of your ride by shots but I guess it wouldn't be as good without sound. I would dunk my shirt in every stream I came across to keep cool. Those Tour de France ice vests look great!
Your suggestion is a good one. It can be done with the drone but I would need to record audio separately. I should be doing this more but I forget. I occasionally dip my shirt in the streams. It dries so quickly so I should do it more often. I haven't seen the ice vests but I'm going to have a look. Thanks for commenting 👍👍
Another great video Mat. The views are simply stunning. I think Caroline was more excited than you about your meeting with John and Mira 😂can’t wait for the next instalment. 😊
@@matryderadventures We were skipping rocks and my 8 year old daughter pulled out a very large rock from the lake. I attempted to skip it and the weight of the rock and force of my throw was enough to split my index finger.
Thank you for posting memories of the Great Divide! That road where the transition from ID to WY happens, a guy riding with us for a few days went to filter water and came back to his bike with a grizzly bear eating his food. Lucky for him, a family in a truck saw what was happening and the guy fired a shot overhead to scare the bear. Stayed at that Colter Bay campground, nice camp but we had some rude party people with loud music until 2am. Once you get past Pinedale, WY no more grizzly bears heading south. Pindedale is a nice small town, there's a decent motel there, the bike shop is friendly, we took a day off there before heading to Atlantic City before the Great Basin. Before the trip I worried about the Basin long stretch without services or water. We got lucky with weather, Diagnus Well was running and a great place to camp. The AM reservoir, one mile off route in the Basin has good water to filter, and is also good camping. Tip: as you get close to Pinedale there is Mosquito Lake above town in the NFS land. We heard wolves the night we camped near the lake as they howled back and forth because we evidently camped just off a dirt road they used to skirt the lake. Great videos, thanks again.
That Grizzly story is remarkable. I hadn't considered that that could happen. I'll know better for next time. Luckily I'm in Pinedale right now. I saw two more Grizzlys since the last video was posted. I passed Mosquito lake this morning. I was all set to camp there last night but a storm.was looming and I ended up staying in Strawberry Creek shelter. It would have been an experience listening to the wolves. Pinedale is a great little town. I'm sat in a restaurant here right now, having a beer as I type. I'll have a day off tomorrow, partly as my new rear tyre is being fitted and partly because it's a nice town to be in. I'll come up with a strategy for the basin tomorrow. I'll definitely need to carry more water but your experiences will help with my plan. Thanks for the information, and for following along 👍👍
@@matryderadventures There is a good cafe in Atlantic City. And the small trailer park 100 feet past has showers and laundry, you have to find the manager though. We rode from Atlantic City to Diagnus Well, not a long ride, the well was running and filters without taste. Nice place to camp around the south side of the fence. AM Reservoir has good camping too and clean water to filter. I left Atlantic City with 6L water just in case, but didn't need it. It was hot, a light wind, but the nighttime in the Basin was amazing! Riding from the reservoir south to Rawlins is real stuff. Take plenty of water it is hot, dry, no water, and it is a long slog uphill on the Hwy before Rawlins with a Divide Crossing at the top. Then a long sweet downhill into town. Big grocery and a BarBque restaurant there.

Thanks for sharing Matt, beautiful images. I thought Colter Bay would be very busy and that people had to book in advance, but I see that you could pitch your tent in a quiet place and that there are still empty tent spots available.
Great shot at the end. That lake was stunning. Wyoming famous for Buffalo Bill Cody, the Sundance kid, and close encounters of the third kind. Loving the videos bro.
Yep weather is pretty miserable, my pinion has been back at the factory so I have been without a bike for 3 weeks now ! But keep those adventures coming, cheers me up no end !
Another great instalment on your adventure. The Tetons look very dramatic in the distance. The rear tyre always gets more wear than the front so you could swap them round if you needed to preserve the tread on the rear. Great stuff - Thanks for filming this, very interesting
Thanks. I definitely should have swapped the tyres but I left it too late. I'm in Pinedale and the rear is completely worn out. It's having a new one fitted today. The Tetons are incredible. Cheers 👍
i think Wyoming is famous for headwinds and mosquitoes. and amazing scenery and people. another great episode, cheers. closing in on 1000 subs and the halfway point. well done.
I am finding out first hand about all of those so far! Just ticked over to 1000 subs, halfway point coming very soon, hopefully I will notice as I keep missing milestone distances! Thank you for watching.
Thanks for sharing your journey Matt. I found your channel yesterday and have watched all your videos in 1 day. No need to mention that I have subscribed. I will follow you till you complete this. Hey Bert, Landscape looks awesome and your going well. 👍 What a result meeting John and Mira, seemed like a nice guy to stop and chat, seen them crop up in many videos for years. RE Tyres: If you have a choice when you get to bike shop, wide tyres (2.8 or 3.0 if you have clearance) will be more comfortable at a low pressure and likely better in sandy terrain . I run 29x3 on my Jones and find it works in most conditions, without being overly draggy on the tarmac. HTH Keep up the good work. Best. Ernie
Hey Ernie. A new rear tyre is being fitted today. Sadly the largest they have is 2.6" and my old one is finished. I want to try 3" tyres. Maybe next time. John is a really nice guy. We had a normal chat off camera. Mira is such a good dog. Everybody loves Mira. Cheers, Bert 👍
Hi. I saw 4 Grizzlys but had no problems with any of them. I think the key is to make sure you keep food out of your campsite and, where possible make noise so you don't surprise them. It was an amazing trip. I hope you make it out there. I'm sure you'll love it. Cheers 👍
I'm excited to get into the basin. It'll be a completely new experience for me. Colorado will be amazing and interesting because of the altitude. Cheers 👍
Mat. Right now I'm on Part 6 of the GDMBR journey with you. Quick question. I few episodes back, you mentioned that you were starting to get saddle sores. Just curious, how did you resolve this because normally you need to get off the bike for a while in order for them to get better. Love your dry sense of humor! The videos are awesome!
I seriously hope so too. I've ridden 20 highway miles into Pinedale today, supposedly downhill bit the headwind has made it feel like a climb. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Cheers 👍👍
You made me laugh when you said the leech was only little. Good job it was because they get fat and ugly when they’ve finished feeding on you 😅 looks like you found it just in time. Keep up the amazing job your doing and don’t forget to lube your chain and check your bolts are tight 👍
Thanks for sharing, Ive been watching this on my 55" telly as a laptop does injustice. This and lejog are now on my bucket list. May I ask if you have this on Strava or similar please and the best months to ride this.
I'll watch these on a large screen TV one day. I don't t have this trip recorded anywhere I'm afraid. I would start at the beginning of July. It all worked out well for me. You can get route information on the ACA website. Any questions, fire away. Cheers.
That's fantastic. I never thought I'd encourage others to do it. This makes me very happy. Saddle sores....I've only used spot cream and it's worked. I learned that saddle sores are caused by bacteria and are just spots/pimples. The spot cream dries them up and I seem to be keeping them under control. It's still painful at the end of a long day's ride but they're definitely becoming less of a problem. Hope that helps.
@@matryderadventures My friend was actually my partner and l think its more friction sores even though she lubes up (oh matron) lol. so this weekend we have booked in for a saddle fit for her.
@@cyclingstevo I wish I'd gone for a saddle fit. It must be the right way to go. I think you're going to get the sores whatever happens l, it's all about minimising their impact and severity.
@@matryderadventuresI do agree that it's all about minimising the impact of them, and on trips of more than two days I take antibacterial wipes and give my sweaty bits a wipe during the day, and a wash with soapy water morning and night. I'm also about to buy a Brooks B17 saddle and give that a go.
Just had an issue with the pedals slipping forward and a metal clunking sound, Pinion said it was the shifting pawls kind of resetting it happens every 20 to 50 k but I was getting it every ride, they have been great took it back and turned it around really quickly, did a full revision but found no obvious problem. So hopefully should have my Broken Road back by the end of next week.
Interesting. I've had a few slips but didn't really think much of it. I'll have to make note of when it happens again. I thought maybe I needed to adjust Something. Hope you're back out on yours soon.
🤣 It's true, filming does slow me down but I love the whole community side of TH-cam so it's more than worth it. I honestly don't think I'd have enjoyed the GDMBR as much as I did if I didn't share it.

I think that lovely family who gave you peanut butter and jelly sandwiches saw you when talking to that spider 🕷 😉 😂 Have a great time. Take care

HTH
Keep up the good work. Best. Ernie
Hello 👋🏻 How many bears 🐻did you see on trip or had a problems with bears 🐻 in Montana to Colorado? An amazing trip. My dream in 2024.
Hi. I saw 4 Grizzlys but had no problems with any of them. I think the key is to make sure you keep food out of your campsite and, where possible make noise so you don't surprise them. It was an amazing trip. I hope you make it out there. I'm sure you'll love it. Cheers 👍
The Great Divide Basin should be a stark contrast and then Colorado, looking forward to it!
I'm excited to get into the basin. It'll be a completely new experience for me. Colorado will be amazing and interesting because of the altitude. Cheers 👍
Great video Math. You’re getting better every time. I like seeing the stopping places. Hope you weren’t doing a “John Stonehouse” at the end🤔X
🤣🤣🤣 I suppose it didn't show me coming back in. I had to look John Stonehouse up. What a Muppet he was 🤣🤣🤣
I think with Mat's humour he'd more likely be doing a Reggie Perrin ... 🤣👍
As the saying goes " Be one of the few who dares to follow there dreams "
It's a great saying. I'm definitely lucky to be able to get out and do things like this. Cheers 👍
Enjoy the Great Divide Basin. I just hope you don't have the head wind I had 😞
I have never even seen a leech so I'm glad I spotted it. I'll check the bolts, but lube the chain?? I have a belt 🤣🤣 chains are so old fashioned 🤣🤣
@@matryderadventures 😅🤣 i thought u had a belt but wasn't sure
Thanks for sharing, Ive been watching this on my 55" telly as a laptop does injustice.
This and lejog are now on my bucket list.
May I ask if you have this on Strava or similar please and the best months to ride this.
I'll watch these on a large screen TV one day. I don't t have this trip recorded anywhere I'm afraid. I would start at the beginning of July. It all worked out well for me. You can get route information on the ACA website. Any questions, fire away. Cheers.
Did you have problems finding places to buy the fuel containers for your stove?
No problems at all. Most towns had an outfitter and they all seem to carry this type of cannister. I usually carried 2 just in case. Cheers 👍
Hi Mat loving your videos and you have inspired us to try the trail next year, question how have you treaded your saddle sores ? asking for a friend
Great drone shots ,what phone sim are you using?
I have a worldwide roaming SIM from the UK. I considered buying a US SIM but haven't needed to so far. I've found plenty of WiFi.
Sorry if you have mentioned it already. What is the shirt you are wearing?
It's a Columbia Siver Ridge Lite. It has lots of vents for good airflow and dries really quickly. I really like it. Cheers 👍
“I can’t blame you for me going slow, but sort of. Sort of. You’re welcome.” 😂 TH-camr Truth
🤣 It's true, filming does slow me down but I love the whole community side of TH-cam so it's more than worth it. I honestly don't think I'd have enjoyed the GDMBR as much as I did if I didn't share it.
Well a deep felt thank you for your work in it too. And so happy to be a part of your community!@@matryderadventures
That lake..... everything screamed, jump in. Obviously, I don't have wise knowledge, I too would have gone in. You should have listened to your better half! Leeches, yuk!!
Those views are wicked ❤.
You do realise you might have appeared to look like a nutty tramp befriending cecil 😂 that was funny.
Face it,that mattress has died a death, and your best friend needs a good wash. Treat it😊 Don't worry about the tyres as they are better than my car tyres!
Well, now you have young strong man's legs again make the most of them, sure Ross with love the competition 😂
Ps.... I think that lovely family who gave you peanut butter and jelly sandwiches saw you when talking to that spider 🕷 😉 😂
Have a great time. Take care
I'm lucky I didn't get more of them on me. Maybe I did 😳. There are some places you just can't/don't want to check.
🤭🤭🤣🤣
I told you earlier, you‘re legs will feel pretty strong soon. I feel now is the time to tell you, that the return to the normal form will be even faster once you stop the daily riding. Sorry buddy, enjoy the legs while you’re on the GDMBR;)
You did and you were right. I'll have to keep riding!! I'll find plenty of bikepacking trips in the UK and Europe. 👍
This is every bit as good as Ryan van Duzers series. No offense to Ryan.
High praise. Cheers. I watched all of his GDMBR videos and it's good to hear that you rate mine.
To rid yourself of Canadians, tell them there’s a hockey game on the nearest tv.
Excellent suggestion. I'll remember for next time 🤣🤣.
