- Hello All. I begin this video leaving Abiquiu with a heavy bike! Two days of potentially difficult terrain, no water source, and a big climb lay ahead of us, and despite definitely being a challenge, these few days were some of my favourites of the whole ride. The New Mexico landscape is incredible to ride through, the vastness of it reminded me a bit of the basin, but the colouring, topography, and heat make this section stand out as truly unique. It is daunting, but absolutely breathtaking, and spending the night camping in the wilderness here was a real highlight of my time on this tour.
Thank you for taking the time to watch this video, and if you enjoyed it please make sure you are subscribed so you can follow along with my adventures.
Your videos have been fantastic to watch. I haven’t always kept up with everything exactly when you upload, but when they pop up in my feed it’s a pleasure to watch, I hope to get on the GDMBR in 2025 when work pressure lessens. I will look back on your experience with fondness and inspiration. Keep filming and going on adventures. You are a fun fellow to watch no matter what adventure you are on.
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I hope you make it in 2025. You'll love it out here. If you have any questions message me at matryder2@gmail.com. I'll be happy to answer as many as you have. Thanks also for the support. Much appreciated 👍
Desert terrain is some of my favorite, the views, open space, the peace and silence, tremendously inhospitable in many ways as well. Lets you feel alive!
I agree completely! It was an incredible place. Thanks for commenting 👍👍
Ride safe! 🚴🚴♂️🚴♀️🇵🇭✌️😎
I did and I will 🤣🤣. Cheers 👍
Dinner of champions...spam, rice, cashews... all you need is some beans! Looking forward to see you finish strong! Great job!
Hmmm... Beans would have been good. Next time. Cheers 👍
👍👍👍
Cheers 👍👍👍
Hey Mat...exceptionally lucky with navigation and dodging the infamous peanut butter mud. Only one day of it. Nice! Volcano core mountains were very interesting. Gotta love breakfast at Dennys. That last drone shot was crazy. Thanks and best...pops
We were extremely lucky. I had a taste of the peanut butter mud but that's all. I heard some horror stories from others. Thanks for watching the whole series. I'm starting to plan a long trail for next year now. Cheers 👍
Thanks again for the wonderful video Mat and thanks Ross for the fine editor work! The drone is a great addition to the GoPro. Looking forward to the final stages. The gdmbr is what you say an exceptional trail it's just fantastic, I hope to ride it someday.
Thanks. The drone definitely captures the scenery better than the GoPro. I hope you make it out here at some point. It's an amazing trail and you'll love it. Cheers 👍
Another great instalment, you know I wouldn’t ask too much of you Mat but I’m sorry mate, you’re going to have to either go back and start all over again or just reverse the trip from Antelope. I mean it won’t be the same without these instalments !!
Well..... If you insist!!! 🤣🤣🤣I'm going to plan the next one as soon as I'm back but it won't be as big as this one. Cheers👍
So glad you're having a wonderful time, Mat! Great adventure!
Thanks 👍. I'm still loving it. New Mexico is astonishing!!! I'll be in Silver City today.
@@matryderadventures Outstanding! So close to the finish. Enjoy every pedal stroke!!
Good stuff... honest and straight to the point....no fluff...love it 😆
Thanks. Good to hear 👍👍
Loving this series! It is awesome. I love how you tell us its hard, but how mu h its worth it and how youre loving it. Its cool to see youve made friends en route and they're having fun and getting involved in videos too! Thank you and safe travels!
It's definitely hard but the views are exceptional, and the people and towns moreso. Thanks for following along 👍
I love your positive attitude, especially for a Brit!
That's good to hear. I'll definitely take that as a compliment 🤣🤣Cheers
Hey Bert, not heard or thought about "backies" in a very long time! made me laugh out loud. I had a hand me down Raleigh Commando as a kid which was pretty good for backies but the Chopper was always king with big long seat and backrest. Happy days. Cheers. Ernie 👍
Hey Ernie. I always wanted a Chopper. I had a Tomahawk and jumped to a Grifter. I may do the next trip on a Chopper. Cheers, Bert.
@@matryderadventures Both great "backie" machines in there own right!
Can't wait to see how you fit the tailfin to a chopper..... 😉
Cool drone shots❤. You have been up against it! Wind, rain, mud, cows😂. Beautiful night sky. Well worth it, your videos say it all. Continue to have fun and keep smiling 😊. Fantastic.
Thanks. It's been a challenge but in general I've had lots of good luck. Only a few days to go!!
That was weird. Just as you said you were on route 66 I said to Steph that we drove route 66 through New Mexico. I wonder if we got that far? I thought we got to Santa Fe but I could be wrong. Loving the Lisa Simpson hair. Another shout out to Ross. You’re doing an amazing job editing these videos. Any chance I could get the outtakes some time? You know, the ones with Mat rambling on until someone says ‘The end’. 😂
Maybe you've been there?? I don't think Steve and I got that far. Lisa Simpson hair 🤣🤣. See you soon Sis!!
It would be interesting once home do a video on total budget for this amazing adventure .. good info for people interested in doing this route
Yes I am planning to do that as part of a review video at the end. I am probably going to give what I spent across the route, and also what in my opinion would be the minimum daily spend if someone was looking for the minimum amount you would need to give it a go.
Thanks again for watching 👍
@@matryderadventures make 2 videos one for friend really price one for wife fake price if you want to live lol
🤣🤣🤣 great idea.
Another fantastic video Mat the contrast through the different states are amazing and beautiful. Again well done👍
Thanks. The variety of landscapes is amazing.
Well done Mat been brilliant this trip sad it’s coming to an end 👍🏻🚴
Thanks. I'm sad too but I'll b planning the next one soon enough. Cheers, and thanks for the support 👍
Loving the recipes.🥘
They're pretty basic but I'll class them as edible 🤣. Cheers 👍
Great video Math. I watched it twice. 😊X
Wow. Twice!!! Thanks Mum.
You are right, it's an exceptional experience. You are doing an exceptional job with the video updates. cheers to Ross too. this just fuels my obsession with this route.
Thank you, and yes he's doing a good job! He may be the only one looking forward to me finishing! 😆
Your videos usually make me rather hungry, and the prospect of watching you devour plate after plate of authentic Mexican food was already filling me with envy, but I must admit that what you ended up with in Cuba did not look quite so appealing! I may have opted for the McDonalds, although I am sure it probably tasted better than it looked.
I cannot believe you are so close to the end, it seems to have gone so fast. I look forward to whatever adventure you have planned next, be that big or small.
I've eaten so much Mexican food lately. El Rito was the best. Chaco's in Cuba was actually pretty good. Thanks for all the support (more or less from the beginning). It's appreciated 👍
Excellent episode! Bet you couldn't wait for those pancakes, they looked yummy! Thanks for sharing, looking forward to the next one! :) :)
They were awesome!!!! I love pancakes. Next video will be out tomorrow (Friday). Thanks 👍
视频拍得很好❤!
Thanks 👍👍
Don't you just love Dennys 😎😎
those pancakes look like good fuel
I do. I'll admit it. It's is chain food, but they do it well. Cheers👍
Nice one bro, really enjoying your adventure. Keep safe 🙏
Cheers. I'll be in Silver City today so nearly done. 👍👍
Hi - once again a fantastic video - you obviously love America and it’s landscapes and towns and your commentary and photography are superb. Thanks for putting this together - I look forward to every episode. One little question - if you had the choice again would you have preferred mtb style suspension forks for this trip over your carbon fibre forks? Thanks for the videos 👍👍
Hi. Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the series. I really do love America. It's a fascinating place. I would stick with the rigid forks but would definitely invest in a suspension stem (I think the company that makes them is called Redshirt). In fact I'm going to get one for the next trip. Cheers 👍
I’m really enjoying this trip and you’re videos, I’m watching them every chance I get. Meeting people from different places is such an amazing thing, I love that. Did Bill have a small trailer and then it’s gone? I’ve told a lot of my friends about your channel, hopefully they’ll subscribe, and have emailed my cousin, who lives in BC and cycles, about doing this trip next summer. 🤞🤞
I hope you make it out next summer. It's amazing so definitely go for it. That trailer had a child in it. It was a couple we met from New Zealand. They made it the whole way!!!! Thanks for recommending me to your friends and thanks for following along. If you have any questions about the route mail me at matryder2@gmail.com. cheers 👍
Just a tip not to prise the belt on like a chain by helping it over the sprocket. Loosen the rear wheel and use the Gates app to get the tension right. In mud, you can run it tighter than normal to help push the mud out.
th-cam.com/video/JO8466-4NSs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-1dUvb2-bsw3Vc2A
Cheers. Thanks for the advice 👍👍
Have you seen that if the belt comes off , Don't prize it back on ,it damages it ,you have to remove the wheel .
I'm careful not to prize it back on. Thanks for mentioning it though. I think it was misaligned for most of the trip. User error!!! Thanks 👍
So many changing of scenery! Thanks for sharing
I can't imagine there's a cycling route in the world that takes in a wider variety of terrain and scenery, it's been incredible. Thank you for watching.
What time of year was this?
I'm going to be going north through there early June.
Thanks for the great videos!
Hi. I set off at the beginning of July and finished early September. Good luck with your trip and thanks for watching 👍
Another great video Mat, loved the drone footage and very interesting about the volcano remains.
"backer / backie" in northeast England, "croggy" in County Durham villages a few miles away.
Big thanks to Ross for his editing skills and time devoted to it, I can't imagine you're paying him top rates ...
All the best 🚴♂️🏕👍
Thanks Tony. I've never heard of a Croggy. I won't give any Croggy's to escapees either. Ross is doing a great job. Cheers 👍
No mountain lions😮
None. I imagine they saw us but we didn't see them. Shame really. Cheers 👍
Great video as always. Thanx also to Ross.
I can’t help it, but I have the feeling you are a way older than you have been in the beginning. Maybe it’s the weight loss or the hair gain? But as long as you’re feeling good, that’s all that matters.
👍 thanks. I always look older when I lose weight. I'll eat until I'm young again when I get home 🤣. Thanks for following along.
What detour did the ACA let you drive? There is no information on the ACA forum (Temporary ACA Route Road Closures). The Black Feather fire is about 2.2 miles north of mile 2230 of the gdmbr (starting in Banff). Did you descend to Valles Caldera National Preserve and then take Hwy 126 to Cuba?
We took a small diversion on forest roads. Bill spent a good while figuring it out. It was the smallest possible diversion but there was a difficult hike a bike section. I'll post the link to the RidewithGPS link below.

The narrow mesa you see at th-cam.com/video/_JzKC5Zsyks/w-d-xo.html is Cerro Pedernal (9,862 feet / 3,006 meters)
Nice. Thanks for the info. I replied to your other comment with a link to our Black Feather Diversion.
Other rides refer to that mud as Peanut Butter
Yes that is what everyone refers to it as here as well, I think I called peanut butter mud in a previous video, and it is so accurate! Before doing this ride I had never experienced mud that you literally cannot ride through, but you really can't. Thanks for watching.
1962, February.... had to be
It was you!!!!! Why would you do such a thing??? 🤣
Hello again Mat. What front fork do you have again? Can’t find a video where you mention the model. How you finding it comfort wise? Recommend it? Just not sure if I should order one with suspension or something like you’re riding. Guess it’s so much easier than having to worry about servicing suspension forks. Take care and great video as always
Whisky No 9. He refers to it in a couple of pre trip videos where he introduces the bike then reviews it. It's not a stock option from Sonder (at least not any more if it was previously). The offer a Pathfinder carbon fork as an option which I guess is similar.
A well maintained suspension fork will do the entire route without any service needed, the dust wipers will need to be cleaned externally if they get muddy.
ah ok thanks, seem to be a lot of no9 models is all@@COYSMike
@@teddylott It looks like the MTN Boost LT based on the specs, particularly the 3 cage mounts and post mount brakes.
@@COYSMike thanks buddy
Our favorite video series, in fact TV period. Love your journey Mat. Looking forward to meeting up. 💪💪
Hi Graham. Best TV period 🤣. I'm flattered. Somebody recognised me yesterday for the first time. I'm starting to become a diva already. 'Do you know who I am?'
@@matryderadventures Starting to wonder if I need to book a space to see you when you return home. haha
One serious note, did you hear about Jay Petervary, he was going for the fastest time on the route you're doing, he got rear ended by a truck on a dirt trail. Just be carefull, not sure oif it was night time.
I heard about him coming through. Do you know if he's ok?
@@matryderadventures he's in hospital but thankfully fixable and says he's going to be back on the bike soon.
Great vid as always. Where did John go??🚵♀️ he seemed to vanish half way through :-)
Thank you. John is still with us and we will finish together, he was just taking some alternate options in some places. Thanks for watching 👍
