Trying Something New: Kayaking Basics and Future Plans
In this video I am trying something new, kayaking! A friend joins me to teach the basics and help me get comfortable with my new kayak. I bought it with the aim of staying active through the winter, as I’ve realised cycling for exercise doesn’t bring me the same joy as my big touring adventures.
I also share my long-term kayaking ambitions, including the very early seeds of an idea to paddle the Inside Passage-a stunning route from Puget Sound, Seattle to Skagway, Alaska. While that feels a long way off as I am currently struggling with the basics, it’s all about learning, and the prospect of a new challenge that will push me out of my comfort zone is really exciting to me.
Thank you for watching, if you enjoyed this video please consider subscribing.

Cycling New Zealand From Top to Bottom: 2025 Tour Aotearoa Plans
มุมมอง 8K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
A bit of a short video this week, I had planned a night camping out locally, but the sub-zero temperatures led to a last minute change of plans, and instead I thought I would just get my Sonder out for a quick ride to check that everything on it is still working well. The reason I wanted to get out on my Sonder again was because it is the bike I will be taking with me to New Zealand in a couple...

I’m getting a few of the best youtubers a beer today. Merry Christmas to you and your family Mat. Thanks for the great videos. They are inspiring. Can’t wait for the next big adventure.
How called is this bicycle? Which model name? Could you please tell me
It's called a Sonder Broken Road.
Norfolk is such a great place. birthplace of Johnny Carson. There is a great museum there and a great restaurant called Black Cow Fat Pig Pub & Steak. Besides agriculture, Nebraska has tons of quirky restaurants. I'll see if you got to see any of the sights in Norfolk. In crossing the Northern Tier, I did learn to also, check out the small towns I got to go through.
@matryderadventures, I don’t see your “bike non-stop” route indicated on the ACA’s interactive route map. Is it documented anywhere? Am enjoying “the ride” with you!
Hi. I'm glad you're enjoying this trip. Thanks for watching. The Bike Non Stop route isn't an ACA route. Here's a link to a site which has all the details. bikenonstop.com/ Cheers.
@ Thanks, Mat!
Idk if you show it in this video but what is the thing called on your handlebars that seems to track you miles and elevation you climb?
I have a Wahoo Element Bolt V2 bike computer. It's been a great little device.
@ how does it work?
How did your saddle treat you on the trip?
I had saddle sores for most of the trip but I don't think it was the saddle. I ended up figuring out that seams on underwear/shorts were the problem. I'd still recommend the saddle.
@@matryderadventures Good advice. I didn't have good luck with the Ergon on my last tour, but I was also using padded shorts.. Never had issues with saddle sores before, but maybe because I am getting older? I just bought an Infinity saddle, so hoping that will help next trip along with a suspension seat post..
Fantastic video, I really enjoyed watching it. It is very good quality, can I please ask, what camera and drone did you use.thanks, Tom
Hi Tom. I'm glad you liked it. On that trip I had a GoPro Hero 11 and a DJI Mini 4 Pro.
@ thank you and best wishes to you
Thanks mat very enjoyable and informative. What was the guide company you were with ? Please
Sir, Your video quality is very good, but you are not getting more views & subscribers because of these SEO problems. As a result, your video is not reaching the target audience. If you want, I can fix this problem. I have sent you an e-mail regarding this. Please take a look.
Thanks for the cool mini tour of the ACA! Lael Wilcox is my hero! What video editing program does your guy use?
It was a very interesting stop. Ross uses Premier Pro but only recently switched from using Power Director. I'm enjoying your tour videos.
Have you ever tried White Lightening on your chain?
I haven't heard of it. I'll look it up. Thanks 👍
I recommend getting solar charger power banks so you never run out of power. Unless the sun never comes up lol
Only on a bike trail is it acceptable to take candy from a strangers van, lol
Mat, you should always have a knife in your 10 essentials kit. 😉 I keep a 10 essentials kit on my bike, in my backpack and in the car. If you respond I'll let you in on the 11th essential!
Im addicted to your channel lately Fantasizing about when I can finally do this
Great video! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thoroughly enjoyed your game vids loved to photography loved the commentary great job 👍 I have ridden across Australia top and bottom and down both sides (supported) but you had the best time with those stunning views …. I look forward to your next adventure….. I’ll come with you …. Anyway good luck Regards garry
So fun to hear you loved Ohio, it was my 2nd favorite when I rode the Northern Tier.
The sign at 13 min mark was showing a place to pull off...mostly for fly fishing I think.
Cheers.
The desolate trampoline! Lol
Is no one going to mention how Mat fell at 3:39...lol, hope you're ok. I bet your brother just laughed at you
Hi. You noticed 😂😂I think you're only the second person ever to see that.
@@matryderadventures I think Ross left that in as a sort of an "easter egg" like in video games, lol.
Such an incredible video! Enjoyed every second of it. So refreshing to watch a punter do this trail compared to the pros!
I guessed seafood sampler I won nothing 😂
😂😂
Thank you for all of your videos. Suggestions for the future: The one thing we have noticed as viewers, like you say too many folks find a thing that works and then churn it out repeatedly, itchy boots is a good example bombing on her bike through country to country without us getting a feel for the place. What i am trying to say is when you can please stop more, visit more locals, not the touristy places, real places and real people, those are the ones that lift your videos, stay longer in the places that are nice if you can. But mostly keep doing what you do.
Thanks for commenting. I honestly appreciate the feedback. Cheers.
Matt & Ross, I’m very much enjoying your videos. Kind of jumping around. Watched some of your Trans Am but cut back to some of your earlier videos and love (a) your relationship, (b) delegation of “duties,” and (c) your honesty and “real” presentation. I’m 80 and via e-bike looking forward to tackling part of C&O + GAP to ride to my 63 year HS reunion next August.
Hi. Thanks for commenting here. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Good luck on the C&O and GAP E-bike ride. I'd love to hear how it goes. Cheers.
Once the American rail trail is done in 10-20 years I plan to ride that on a e trike cause being disabled I could never ride a regular bike cross country
Excellent stuff. Where is your accent from? I thought Welsh at first.
You're right. I was born in Cardiff. I left at around 18, but the accent has stayed.
@ excellent. I was gonna say black country at first 😂
I’m addicted to this series rn!
I plan to do this trip in the upcoming coming years. But I’ll be riding a e trike since I’m disabled but plan to pedal as much as I can
Cycling seems easier! Well done nonetheless!
I enjoy the variety of your channel, I would say it is niche enough, it is all about outdoor adventures, keep up the good work.
I solo bicycle toured New Zealand in 1977 and returned with my new wife on 1979. I returned with my recumbent in 2015. Great people great scenery narrow roads windy and can be rainy. I saw your route map and you will miss two great rides. The East Cape of the North Island. No traffic super scenery. And you will miss riding the Kaikora Coast on the South Island. Ten thousand foot mountains down to the sea. One of the great rides in the world. If you hated mosquitoes on the Trans Am you will loath the sand fleas especially on the West Coast of the South Island which is also noted for rain. I hiked many of the national parks and the most spectacular in my mind is Able Tasman near Nelson. Love your videos and will watch excitedly which ever route you take.
Thanks for all the information. I should have some time at the end to explore now if the island. Thanks 👍
excellent loveing the series so compelling to watch
I thought about this then unthought it pretty quickly 😅
🤣🤣
When I learnt to do this, I started in a swimming pool first, which really helped to get the basics bedded in.
I'm late to the party but, having ridden across Nebraska, you may be interested in what folks from my neck of the woods say about that: th-cam.com/video/7xqBg75um-k/w-d-xo.html
I'll have a look. Cheers
Hey Matt, when do you actually start the ride in NZ? I'll have to set a reminder to watch. I've just recently found your channel and binge watched your videos. It'd be cool to follow this in real time. Cheers and happy riding
Hi. I'll start on 14th January. Cheers.
Where's the tomato sauce for the sausages
I forgot. I would have had brown sauce if I'd remembered though.
That’s wholesome entertainment 🙏🏻
Enjoy the style of commentary of your videos. Been watching since the divide and enjoy your content. Really enjoyed the most recent series on crossing the US bike ride. I did want to ask, what are you using to film these videos. Looks clear and very stable.
Thanks. I mainly use a GoPro Hero 11. I also have a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone.
@@matryderadventuresthank you. Will be here following along.
Good stuff Mat. You should keep a climbing karibenar on your PFD to attach yourself to the boat if you fall out and you are struggling and i always keep a large car cleaning sponge stuffed under my seat to mop up the last of the water in my cockpit, it helps lift all the gravel and dirt out too
Most importantly though, always make sure that tab on the soraydeck is out. Stay safe
Thanks for the advice. I'll look into both of your suggestions. Cheers
Did the TransAm in 1999 in 36 days just me and a buddy nice to see the places we rode again hate you are getting off the TransAm but I do understand.
Hi Mat, Dave from the Teton Valley. I used to live in Seattle on the water, Puget Sound, and have taken my private boat a 46’ power boat up part of the Inside Passage and have kayaked extensively in Puget Sound. It is BIG water and requires extensive preparation and experience on the water with tidal rips and big waves. Don’t underestimate it as you cannot simply pull over like you can on a bike and wait out the weather. P&H Boats, British made, makes a great boat called the Cetus MV that you could buy or perhaps hire in Seattle. Fast, carries plenty and nice in rough water. You should switch to a dry suit now so you stay warmer and get used to it as you will wear it everyday. Your current boat is great for learning and well done on the cowboy re-entry!
Hi Dave. I think I underestimated the Inside Passage so have a lot to learn. Honestly, I love that this will be a proper challenge but I'll only take in on once I'm ready. I have a lot of practice to fit in. Cheers.
Can you share some information about that foldable kickstand?
It's called a click stand www.click-stand.com
@@matryderadventures thank you for the information
