Just a thought, and I am not sure if it is relevant but the rule where you are only allowed to walk on colored ground could be to jump across the non-colored ground (such as, like you said snow). Once again just having fun with the rules. I tend to like to try to break them to get them to a point in which they can't be broken. Much love to everyone 😉🤍🩶🖤
I thibk it might be more fun if each rule lasted only until the next star is collected. That way you don't have to keep track of 10 different rules at the same time, and ones that are contradicting each other wouldn't end the run and rules that ban overlapping things wouldn't do so either
That's one way of doing it! I thought making them all simultaneous was more unique, since a lot of the rules are easy on their own. Could be fun to do it this way if each individual challenge was more difficult though!
@@MandatoryPixel I was gonna suggest something similar, but make it that like a max 3 rules are always in effect, and the oldest one is bumped off when a new rule comes in.
or you could do more like some of the GTA randomizers. roll them and instead of being on a timer, they're on a "collect X amount of stars before you are free from the rule", or you put them on a timer (always felt cheaper to me though honestly). there's also the option to start the run with a set number of rules that didn't change to go along with the ones that expire
Funny that my "no orange" rule was such a big deal here! I only bothered because I figured was "give me ideas for challenge runs to try" and I figured lotsa folks would spam no color runs but few would specifically say orange.
It would be cool to see a full 70-Star playthrough of this where you grab as many stars as you can until it's impossible to get more, and then eliminate all restrictions and continue from that point in the game. The idea would be to complete an entire playthrough while needing to reset the restriction list as few times as possible.
That does sound interesting! My original idea actually did involve a 70-star playthrough. The plan at first was to do one playthrough like the ones seen in the video, and then a second playthrough where I got 70 stars, and counted up how many times breaking the rules was absolutely necessary. But it was already hard enough to keep track of all the rules when around ten of them were active, so I decided not to go that route. Your version seems a little more reasonable!
I had something similar in mind. You can't have more than five active challenges at once. You must replace a challenge of your choice each time you get a sixth one.
this sounds very interesting and possibly more viable if the wheel wasn't additive and every new challenge applied to the current star and changed with every star.
Another idea: have a wheel that adds in things that clear either specific types of rules or even reset all rules. Add one free extra spin you can do as a last ditch attempt Another one: you can randomly roll something to see how long a rule stays in effect. What I hope to eventually see is a variation of this idea that allows you to complete a run.
10:21 I feel like taking on Koopa the Quick violates the no talking to anyone rule. You might not initiate the conversation with the press of a button, but you still have to walk up to him to get him to talk to you. I enjoyed the video! Congratulations on passing the 10K mark!
I would agree with you! Apparently my brain decided to ignore that rule for a while or something, because in the hour this video has been out I've already had two instances of me breaking that rule pointed out 😂 Oops! Keeping track of everything at once while playing was tricky, so I'm sure there are a few mistakes like that here and there.
Maybe the rules could increase per star per world. First star = no rules, Second star = one rule, Third star = two rules etc... That way it's still challenging, but not so annoying that you're forced to lose the game.
13:44 - I didn’t even notice that Mario was standing on a black-and-white tiled ground until the voiceover said “I was banned from touching grey.” This challenge seems very difficult, but it was so fun to watch!
One fun challenge for a hack could be to have a medium-size creature roam around in the game in random locations - not only on the stages, but _anywhere_ - and look for Mario, and then start heading in Mario's direction if it sees him, and if it touches Mario, then the game ends. This would add a wonderful element of paranoia.
That does sound fun! There's a challenge kind of like that in the regular game called the Green Demon Challenge, where you spawn one of the 1-Up Mushrooms that follows you, and then try to get a star without it catching up to you. Doesn't have the random element of your idea, but it's kind of similar!
I think it would be fun to see this done again, but with a limit to the amount of rules you have at a given time. Like maybe spin for 5 rules, then spin for one new one after each star. You have to add the newest rule each time but you have a choice for which one to discard so there's a little strategy to it. :)
Idea for a playthrough with this. Play until you get a rule combination that breaks you. You then discard the oldest rule involved in that combo and proceed. This way, you can keep gping all the way through with as much fuckery as possible, but you still get to eventually finish
Honestly, the enemies can't notice you rule is probably an end runner unless it specified that bosses or Bowser are exceptions because they have to notice you if you want to best them
Glad I found your channel, been looking for another channel who does good challenge run content. Not sure about your stance on suggestions but if you're up for it, since you seem to gravitate towards older games, maybe a Doom (1993) challenge run? It'd be different from what you've done so far but I think it'd still fit the vibes of your videos.
Thanks! Hopefully my videos can entertain! Regarding suggestions, I'm certainly open to seeing what people are interested in! Can't guarantee I'll do them though. I don't have very much experience with Doom, so I'm not sure I'd have enough knowledge to do a challenge run of it.
Hey, great video, keep going, i know you arent a big creator but i love your videos, would you be into doing pikmin challenges? Also love your narrating
A cool idea for a video would be to do this same wheel but with the 120 stars. Like, start the game and rotate the wheel. The wheel will say which star you should collect, until you eventually manage to get a playthrough in which you can collect at least the minimum amount of stars for the final boss, or, for example, if the first star is immediately an endgame star, the run ends because you cannot get to it.
I actually did notice that, but when I was researching for this playthrough, I found that even if you're a far distance from a Goomba, they seem to occasionally do that jump randomly. Since the other ones didn't notice me unless I was much closer, I figured that particular jump was one of those! I guess I could be wrong though.
@@MandatoryPixel That's fair. All of my knowledge comes from Pannenkoek videos, so far from an expert here, but it seems likely that you skirted the edge of its activation radius when jumping up to the next platform.
It would be fun to see you be able to toss the final bowser.. a few ways that could limit soft-locks would be either to only do one challenge at a time. or maybe have multiple active challenges and each new rule replaces one of the others, with a stipularion that you cant just cycle between one or two slots. The most ideal system imo would be to categorize the challenges, and so each category only has the latest one applied..
I agree with the suggestions to only have the rules last for a short while. Maybe 5 at a time max or randonly roll 3 for each level that resets for the next star. Alternatively, you could have some spots that allow you to remove a rule or reset the whole list.
Awesome video. It'd be really neat if those rules could somehow be built into the game itself so when you spin and get no R button, it's disabled in-game.
Maybe you could do a different approach that would be easier but still interesting. For every star you have to roll for a new challenge that only applies for the next star, and then after collecting the next star, you stop doing the previous challenge and roll a new one, and so on.
When I was a kid and played this game I wasn’t aware of the owl and just assumed the star in the cage had to be collected using the canon and did it that way, so you could’ve got that one :)
I would have considered prioritizing a Bowser level after one of the failed runs, since Bowser bottlenecks other levels. And that's always good for options, until the anti-control rules get too cumbersome.
You can get the Owl Star without using the owl, with a much slower, but easier method with the cannon. This is probably the most famous clip of this alternative strategy: th-cam.com/users/clipUgkx-eH_UFadB1JxEj244K8fJeq9Xn3-2l32?si=U8zrzFDpz-vmh3Tq
perhaps instead of lasting the whole run, rules could only last 5 or 3 stars (this could mean that you could get multiple of the same rules in one run too)
Great video, but I got a small advice: if you get unlucky like at 18:15, just repeat the level. Most people I know love the amount of work in the video and rulebends often make you feel less invested. Still enjoyed the video a lot!
How about the same concept, but the challenges reset after each world, whether you complete it or move on. See how many worlds you can complete and how many stars you can get. You can have allowances or restrictions on what order you get the stars or play the worlds. I'd say start with allowing any order, but have challenges on the wheel that restrict the star or world order, and have them be permanent. So if you roll one of those, you don't get an immediate difficulty increase for the next star, but the overall playthrough just got more restricted. Then for every non-world area like the Cap and Bowser areas, roll 5 random challenges or something. You could also have the Castle's Secret Stars activate permanent challenges.
You just earned a new sub. GREAT VIDEO MY MAN. I have a suggestion on how to tackle a challenge like this on a more manageable way while keeping it entertaining, seeing how you could manage many challenges at a time maybe we should put a limit to how many challenges at a time you do, I say 5 at a time. to make it easy to track realtime you use the wheel alongside a spreadsheet of the challenges. so it would go as follows: - Make sure you add every challenge in the spreadsheet first - Add the challenges to the wheel with their challenge number on it, meaning the row they show on looking at the spreadsheet (this will help easily track ongoing challenges later, trust me) - Start the run and get the first star, upon rolling the wheel you'll get the first challenge and it's number (make sure you keep all of the challenges on the wheel for the chance of them to show up again further down the run making it even more random) - Go to the spreadsheet and use another column to keep track of which challenge is on first, you can make a visual cage for each one of the five ongoing challenges, so for the first one you just use the function "=???" where the question marks you replace with the letter coordinates of the challenge that rolled on the wheel. so it's replace by a visual ongoing chalenge list you can keep looking at to keep yourself aware of which challenges are ongoing - Upon reaching the 6th wheel roll you just replace the first challenge with whatever is rolled on the 6th, overriding the first challenge because you're only doing the last 5 challenges rolled. - Keep rolling the wheel, overriding the oldest added challenge with the newest one while always keeping 5 on the cage, which serves as your visual queue to what do you need to be aware of everytime you route your way to the next star. Yes, more than one monitor makes it easier to keep the gameplay on one screen and the logistics on the other screen, you can also record the ongoing challenges cage to keep a visual reminder for the viewers here. I would love to do this myself but i wouldn't upload it because i'm not a content creator however i like SM64 as much as you do and thoght of viable ways to keep your very good idea going further
I did it and it was very fun. Could not get a 7th star because I was locked into a single stage bc of the "don't touch red's that's brutal if you consider how much red carpet is all over the castle. I loved it tho 🎉
Nice! Seven stars isn't bad. Thanks for the wheel suggestions! I've gotten a number of suggestions on how to improve the concept, so if I ever go back to this idea for a future milestone or something, then I'll probably make some adjustments.
This was such a great idea! I loved what you did here! Very fun to watch! I hope you do more things like this in the future. I could even give you an idea if you want
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Managing and keeping track of all the submissions was already pretty challenging at 10k, so it would probably become a bit much at future milestones unless I only kept a certain number of them, but we'll see!
This was so much to do! I Tried this myself and got as far as 20 stars, i got locked out of bowser key 1 super quickly but got alot of stars in the rest of the stages. This was more fun then i expected. Great video :)
...I suppose so 😆 I figured one or two might slip through the cracks, haha. It was pretty tricky to keep track of everything at once, so I imagine there might be a few hiccups like that!
So wait. You got lil penguin lost on your second attempt…when talking to npcs were banned. I have vivid memory of the ds version of mario 64 but im pretty sure momma penguin talks. Roll credits!
9:35 Toads are _fun-gis,_ but that doesn't mean they're people. Talking to a fungus isn't the same as talking to a person, so you're fine, if not maybe going a little insane. (I mean, by your logic, talking to bombs also counts, and those _certainly_ aren't people. Sure, they can make mushroom clouds, but unlike Toadstools, they're not even alive.)
6:30 ... Why couldn't you get past the Piranha Plant without it noticing you? Piranhas only wake up when you move too quickly around them, and you're in a state of permanent walking. Couldn't you ratchet it back to creeping speed and walk past it?
LOL, you know what, I think I've spent so many years bouncing through levels quickly and just ignoring them that in the moment I forgot you can sneak past them if you walk.
Thanks very much! I only hit 10k because so many people chose to support my stuff, so I figured involving the audience a bit would be a fun way to give back! Not sure what I should do if I ever hit a bigger milestone like 100k though, it might have to be something simpler like a Q&A because doing something like this with that many people might be too much 😆
I'd have preferred if you just replaced contradictory rules with the latest spun version, tbh. It would keep it more fresh and dynamic, and we'd be more likely to see later, more complex stages with bonkers ass rule sets. But I also prefer to see challenge runs pushed to completion even if you fail, with a counter or other indicator that it is not possible. Just to see how much of a game you can complete without central mechanics.
If I had submitted a rule, would "No Restrictions Rule" be allowed? Like as a very rare, one in a million, blessing to the multitude of curses? To clarify: It would just remove the current restrictions, but new ones could be added after.
I probably would've included it if you had somehow done that, but like I mentioned at the start of the video, I specifically avoided mentioning what my plan for the submissions was, so people didn't actually know I was going to do this wheel thing when they were submitting! I just asked for individual rules for a challenge run. So you wouldn't have really known there were restrictions to be cleared when submitting.
One of us needs to be checked for collr blindness... "are doors orange" (they're brown) - "the lava painting is orange" (come on, this is 99% red). "Oh look, a jumping box" (what? How is this thing not orange?)😅
Hey man. Loved your videos on OOT and MM. Mentioned your channel in a discord server I moderator for CryZENx (a guy who's remaking OOT with UE5 for free). Hope to see you do more videos on them in the future!
Thanks! Up to now I've generally stuck to doing only one video per game, but I actually have another idea for OoT I want to try, so that one might happen eventually!
6:29 Does it still count as noticing you if it's asleep? Maybe the stirring animation counts as noticing, but it shouldn't wake up if you're only walking right?
Yeah, I had another comment mention this! It was kind of funny, I've spent so many years bouncing through the levels quickly that I actually just forgot in the moment that you could sneak past them.
hobolord was so evil, it's basically a write of passage that multiple button inputs is required to beat all mario games. just try it, there are so many points in super mario ds where i go "oh yeah, that makes this impossible" the one for the wii feels much more possible to me, but only in multiplayer mode. beating sunshine is laughably undoable. maybe mario kart if you get godly rng? 🤔🤔
It would be the best selling game ever.. if they put a pc port on steam with no shenanigans like some extreme drm. seriously it would shoot to the top of the charts near instantly.
I think it would’ve been more interesting (and fair) if you removed all the rules from the wheel that were active on the previous runs. That way we’d get to see more rules in play and not have any duplicates, which happened more often than I thought it would in the video. I guess 1/70 isn’t that rare. 😅
That's a good idea, actually! I'm not sure if I'll ever do another video exactly like this one for a future subscriber milestone, since it was already tricky to keep track of everything, but if I do I'll consider doing it this way! Would provide more variety for sure.
10:00 Did I miss something? If you couldn't talk to NPCs, why do you collect the Penguin's Star? When you return his baby, he says thanks you for returning the Baby but it still is an NPC. 🤔
It's possible I'll do something like this again if I reach another subscriber milestone! Managing all the submissions and keeping track of them while playing was a bit tricky though, so who knows.

It's not your fault. Muscle memory just hits you like a truck. Sometimes, you just want to play like a speedrunner.
12:00 "How did I not collect this 1-Up" Pannenkoek2012 actually has an answer to this: 1-Ups have an extremely small hitbox
Maybe have it be on a per world basis? So then you have to figure out which stars to go after first.
Yeah that's how i imagined it. Enter a level and then spin the wheel
or you could do more like some of the GTA randomizers. roll them and instead of being on a timer, they're on a "collect X amount of stars before you are free from the rule", or you put them on a timer (always felt cheaper to me though honestly). there's also the option to start the run with a set number of rules that didn't change to go along with the ones that expire
Mario walking everywhere looks extremely cursed, I love it
Funny that my "no orange" rule was such a big deal here!
Brown is dark orange. Yes, i found this very entertaining
No it isn’t. Brow is mixed from orange + blue. If it was dark orange it would be orange + black
@@algotkristoffersson15 Brown in the additive color space is just dark orange.
But bowser, an enemy, noticed you. Invalid run😂
Another idea: have a wheel that adds in things that clear either specific types of rules or even reset all rules. Add one free extra spin you can do as a last ditch attempt
Another one: you can randomly roll something to see how long a rule stays in effect.
Thie star-challenge idea is so cool until just does a 0 star run instead lol
Dang, that would've been a good gag to end with 😆
Idea for a playthrough with this. Play until you get a rule combination that breaks you. You then discard the oldest rule involved in that combo and proceed. This way, you can keep gping all the way through with as much fuckery as possible, but you still get to eventually finish
Honestly, the enemies can't notice you rule is probably an end runner unless it specified that bosses or Bowser are exceptions because they have to notice you if you want to best them
One parallel universe away? So the best game is Paper Mario?
Well, "best-selling", so I guess the answer is Minecraft 😆
@@MandatoryPixel Fair. Minecraft is old enough to be pregnant... though nobody the same age as Minecraft should be.

You know, that first Bowser fightin the vid failed you cause Bowser counts as an enemy
The damageless category of speedrunning doesn't consider diving in normal water as damage. Only taking damage from cold water is banned as damage.
That's good to know! I guess I could see an argument for both angles.
Hey, great video, keep going, i know you arent a big creator but i love your videos, would you be into doing pikmin challenges? Also love your narrating
Thanks very much! I'm honestly not the best at Pikmin, so I'm not sure I'm the best person to do a challenge for it, but maybe sometime!
You should try this again, but every 5 stars you can remove a restriction. That way you have to strategize which rules are impeding you most.
5:54 I'm sorry to say, that Goomba noticed you. It jumped.
5:50 goomba spots you as you get on the upper platform
Honestly, keeping track of all the active rules seems like it could be the hardest part.
Well, maybe not hardest, but still hard.
Fair enough, that the blindfolded did not got into the video.
Still, this video is going to be good with that, what is going into it!
When I was a kid and played this game I wasn’t aware of the owl and just assumed the star in the cage had to be collected using the canon and did it that way, so you could’ve got that one :)
"no enemies must notice Mario"
the Goomba under the platform, somehow noticing Mario: 5:54
I would have considered prioritizing a Bowser level after one of the failed runs, since Bowser bottlenecks other levels. And that's always good for options, until the anti-control rules get too cumbersome.
I can already tell this one's going on the roster of videos I watch repeatedly while I work on other things.
People should try this as a livestream for fun
You can get the Owl Star without using the owl, with a much slower, but easier method with the cannon.
This is probably the most famous clip of this alternative strategy: th-cam.com/users/clipUgkx-eH_UFadB1JxEj244K8fJeq9Xn3-2l32?si=U8zrzFDpz-vmh3Tq
Cool! I haven't seen that one before. Thanks for clipping it!

Thanks for sticking around! Hopefully a shorter wait next time!
This was a fun idea! I'm glad that the algorithm recommended this vid to me and I hope to see your channel continue to grow 😀
Thanks very much!
Can tell this video to took long to make great work by it saying you hit 10,000 which is a good job but you hit 13,000 now
perhaps instead of lasting the whole run, rules could only last 5 or 3 stars (this could mean that you could get multiple of the same rules in one run too)
8:15 ahhhaha you’re using WarioWare DIY’s soundbits from the comic creator! Love that game, still play it! That franchise needs more recognition
It is good! The little comic jingles seemed perfect for my purposes 😆
Great video, but I got a small advice: if you get unlucky like at 18:15, just repeat the level. Most people I know love the amount of work in the video and rulebends often make you feel less invested. Still enjoyed the video a lot!
So many bits from this video are extremely funny out of context 6:55-7:00

Exactly
I just want you to know I spent last night binge watching your videos and you're now one of my favorite content creators on here.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed them!
Parallel universe? Omg he said the thing!
What if you did the challenges but only be used for a single play through. So each challenge can only be applied once.
Just a thought. Fun vid. 😀
You just earned a new sub. GREAT VIDEO MY MAN. I have a suggestion on how to tackle a challenge like this on a more manageable way while keeping it entertaining, seeing how you could manage many challenges at a time maybe we should put a limit to how many challenges at a time you do, I say 5 at a time. to make it easy to track realtime you use the wheel alongside a spreadsheet of the challenges. so it would go as follows:
- Make sure you add every challenge in the spreadsheet first
- Add the challenges to the wheel with their challenge number on it, meaning the row they show on looking at the spreadsheet (this will help easily track ongoing challenges later, trust me)
- Start the run and get the first star, upon rolling the wheel you'll get the first challenge and it's number (make sure you keep all of the challenges on the wheel for the chance of them to show up again further down the run making it even more random)
- Go to the spreadsheet and use another column to keep track of which challenge is on first, you can make a visual cage for each one of the five ongoing challenges, so for the first one you just use the function "=???" where the question marks you replace with the letter coordinates of the challenge that rolled on the wheel. so it's replace by a visual ongoing chalenge list you can keep looking at to keep yourself aware of which challenges are ongoing
- Upon reaching the 6th wheel roll you just replace the first challenge with whatever is rolled on the 6th, overriding the first challenge because you're only doing the last 5 challenges rolled.
Managing and keeping track of all the submissions was already pretty challenging at 10k, so it would probably become a bit much at future milestones unless I only kept a certain number of them, but we'll see!
you should do it that if u get a key from a bowser level and/or complete a levels whole set of stars you can remove one challenge
Glad to see you back, and congrats on 10k! This video was a cool concept, and entertaining to boot! Keep up the good work!
I would love to see you make this a series with different games or something because your commentary and gameplay was so fun to watch
I find crazy that you are at almost 14K with only 9 videos, thats a huge accomplishment.
You broke the no talking to anyone rule twice by doing the Baby Penguin Lost and Koopa The Quick stars
Id say start with x number of challenges, and every time you get a star, you can reroll a challenge. Might be more doable that way.
This was so much to do! I Tried this myself and got as far as 20 stars, i got locked out of bowser key 1 super quickly but got alot of stars in the rest of the stages. This was more fun then i expected. Great video :)
Thanks! 20 stars is pretty impressive!
Umm...doesn't the mama penguin count as talking?
...I suppose so 😆 I figured one or two might slip through the cracks, haha. It was pretty tricky to keep track of everything at once, so I imagine there might be a few hiccups like that!

Congrats on hitting 10000! Remember me when you hit a million subs.

Love your videos. Keep up the good work 👍
Woah this is crazy underated
I love how your avatar isnjust some dude going :3 but italicized

hobolord was so evil, it's basically a write of passage that multiple button inputs is required to beat all mario games. just try it, there are so many points in super mario ds where i go "oh yeah, that makes this impossible" the one for the wii feels much more possible to me, but only in multiplayer mode. beating sunshine is laughably undoable. maybe mario kart if you get godly rng? 🤔🤔

15:04 😂

It's possible I'll do something like this again if I reach another subscriber milestone! Managing all the submissions and keeping track of them while playing was a bit tricky though, so who knows.
