Can You Beat The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Without Using Masks?

- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a game that revolves around masks. To beat the game, you're required to use a variety of masks for many different purposes. So is it possible to beat the entire game without using masks? In this video, I attempt to beat The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask without using masks!
Thanks to @ZunarSR, @IndigoTeddy, @PushyMisumi, @turkenheimer4448, and @Majora1176 from the Majora's Mask Speedrunning Discord for helping me out!

My favorite Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's.
..face
I think i prefer it's predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of
@@Josuh That must be the European name. I remember it being The Legend of Zelda: of Time.
I quite enjoyed The Legend of Zelda: Princess.
@@FelisImpurrator Oh, i never knew about that. I also like The Legend of Zelda: Wind, definitely a timeless game
I like to imagine this is the result of Link being stuck in the cycle for thousands of years and gradually discovering ways to break his own reality to try to find which method might be the one to finally free him.
Groundhog Day featuring Link from The Legend of Zelda™ series
That’s such a badass idea dude
As Loki in S2, where he leanrs everything about physics
I like this idea but I wanna spin it a little, instead of gradually discovering ways to escape, he’s given up hope and is completely bored of the 3 day cycle so he fucks around and proceeds to find out
Well that explains the 700 million rupees in the bank at 2:22
30:56
Just imagine that guard on his lunch break talking to the other guards, “Yeah so I found an intruder, I threw him a bit too hard.”
“What do you mean?”
“So you know how the moon isn’t coming down anymore?”
“Yeah?”
“And you know that intruder?”
“Yeeaahh?”
“So I threw him so hard at the moon it stopped”
“Yeah right”
“YOU WERE IN THE SAME ROOM”
"It going up now..."
This entire run is basically: "I can't. However..."
"Normally you're supposed to do this... So I activated infinite sword glitch..."
@connorgibes709 well it's called INFINITIE for a reason
Its so funny how instead of Link just teleporting out of a cave to the credits like in Ocarina of Time, a guard actually throws him into the moon.
iirc there are actually faster ways like a warp from ikana straight to majora and of course a credits warp now
The idea of a random deku palace guard having the power to throw a small child all the way to the moon is one that amuses me greatly.
He's a chuckster
Ah yes zelda. If i remember you're the little guy who deposited 700000000 rupees. Not a bad amount for a single day in the game
"after giving my character the canon name"
*names character Zelda but calls him Link for the rest of the video anyway*
And the “Oca-ray-na” lol
Bro couldn't commit to the bit
“The True Name” lol
Immersion ruined.
Clearly it was meant to be a throwaway joke, would you REALLY want to hear him be called Zelda the whole video?
i audibly sputtered in disbelief when the true machinations of the whole deku guard thing was revealed how in the hell did just doing completely random shit make the guard throw you to the fucking MOON
You see its actually a very ancient Deku ritual of Power you cast upon the guard, and then when he throws you out doesn't realize the strength he has and accidentally sends you to the moon. Who knew a Deku would be the first to send the first Hylian to the moon?!
More over, how the hell was this glitch even discovered?
Stale Reference Manipulation is a hell of a glitch.
@@humantwister9209 It started with people noticing seemingly random things happening occasionally, like a door suddenly appearing in midair for some reason. Eventually it was figured out that it had to do with the way things are unloaded and then found ways for the player to do that, and used emulator memory viewers to study it and figure out how to get the game to execute the code you want. It helps that there's a decompilation project in the works so the code is pretty well understood at this point
What I liked about this video was that you were instructive on all the glitches executed for you to complete this challenge, and you taught me a better glitch for easier access to the Stone Tower Temple's boss room (26:41).
Glad to hear it! I think part of the fun of a playthrough like this is showing off the weird tricks you can do.
Yeah seconded! Very helpful for people who want to try this out themselves!
@@MandatoryPixelI’m in the Spirit temple as Kid Link in Ocarina of Time
I like to think that after turning his curse into a mask, Link is so traumatized by the experience that he avoids masks at all costs. Yeah it’s silly, but he’s like 11 in this game so I can still see it.
Man I love adding lore to things, this shit makes so much sense
masks scary. flying with bombs is fine tho
"One of these days, Alice...straight to the Moon" - Deku Palace Guard, probably
This could easily turn into a speedrun category
Wow!! Deku Guards are scary, being able to throw you to the moon :0
A force more powerful than Majora 😆
Link, having learned from doing this very quest once already, decided to throw all masks away, including the mask of a deity to prove he needed no masks.
I guess you could say he really went mask-off
How in the HELL did you figure out that big octo bypass. Drowning at a specific time and place in order to freeze the enemy projectile and use it to propel yourself backwards. absolute f*****g chefs kiss! well played.
I found a video from PushyMisumi that explained how to do it! Here it is: th-cam.com/video/ulzjuBuYe0M/w-d-xo.html
I’ll never get how people figure out the random, specific crap that’s required to do glitches like the one to get in the moon from Deku palace
It's done using ram manipulation that's only possible on emulators. Basically by watching the code move in real time. Essentially, wizardry.
@@skulblaka965 in this case, the specific Moon Warp setup he performed works on all versions though, with some alterations to the setup here and there.
But yeah, having an emulator at hand (or a modified version of the game that allows you to display memory addresses) helps discovering what SRMs work, and how to do them fast.
that is done by using SRM (stale reference manipulation) which the simplest explanation I have is basically by doing the glitch to pick up the invisible pot you can alter the location of where the deku guard throws you by using a stale reference (a number in memory that has not been updated properly) to overwrite the map data on where the deku guard sends you after getting caught and therefore sending you to any desired location as long as you can find out how to manipulate the memory in such a way that it aligns with the map data, all of which is done via emulator where you can watch specific memory addresses in realtime as they update which makes the process of discovering the glitch possible if tedious.
@@skulblaka965 This is an incredibly false statement. Emulation does not change the code of a game. ACE (arbitrary code execution) is an exploit that is possible in ANY game past present and future. All you need to do is find a way to manipulate the RAM allocation of a game to execute custom code. This is infinitely difficult in modern games since modern game's use up an insane amount of memory to run so most any custom code you run would just cause a crash. But in older games where the memory economy of programs was pitifully limited it's insanely easy to write code that can enable you to do nearly anything. All you need is to find a way to glitch the game into a state where your inputs control the code being written into memory. After that it's just a matter of working whatever values you want into memory and finding a method to execute your code.
@@MugiwarasNakama Yes and figuring out how to do that is done by inspecting ram in an emulator. As I said.
That superslide up Snowhead was just disgusting, I'm sorry you had to go through that.
Congrats mate, this was very interesting to watch. Glad to have been of help. Good luck with your future projects.
Thanks very much! Good luck with your future runs as well :)
I love all the challenges for Zelda games. Majora without masks, beating OOT as child link. Tears of the kingdom without crying. Phenomenal
of the kingdom
"One of these days Link. POW! ZOOM! Straight to the moon!"
",,, what I'm about to say is going to seem really random..."
Sir, I have seen what MM speedruns are like. Random is what we're here for =P
that Goat fight was so intense I was the edge of my seat the whole time
See I thought you were serious cause I hadn't gotten to that part yet
@@thesauce179 April fools
You know that the light arrow activated objects can also be activated with hot spring water? It may not be useful for this playthrough but helps speedrunning
No, I didn't know that! That's interesting!
@@MandatoryPixel Since you went straight from Snowhead to STT you could have saved a little bit of time by grabbing some HSW for the first sun block that you hovered over. Water only works on the sun blocks if it collides with them above the floor level, and that specific block is conveniently placed below a little step down.
It works on the other blocks too, but they aren't as easy to trigger because they are sitting directly on the ground so you need to do a hover to get a bit of height before dropping the water, at which point you might as well just hover all the way over them. It even works on the red button outside the temple if you can hover yourself right in front of it! There used to be an old 100% route that would use that trick to access ISTT without light arrows.
He's so composed throughout the course of this entire video. I imagine the Snowhead section took hours of attempts because of how getting blown off the ramp up to the temple door can still cost you all your progress.
This is amazing. I love when speedrunning glitches are used in different ways
Kinda sad you had to resort to SRM at the end (since SRM basically lets you do anything). Was hoping there'd be a wrong warp or some other glitch for getting to the moon or to Great Bay Temple.
But still, a really fun video. I like that you actually explained the mechanics behind a bunch of glitches I've seen speedrunners use just by name. Although it was silly to see you do all that pause buffering to do what looks sort of like a HESS to get into snowhead (just silly because I'm used to seeing people do it without, still an impressive trick to do with the buffering!).
It definitely would've been nice! SRM was a last resort, but all other options (Debug Menu for Remains, other types of SRM, etc.) were either impossible on the Switch version, or required masks as part of their set-up.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think part of the fun of these glitch-heavy playthroughs is showing off some of the crazy stuff you can pull off, so I like to explain them so that people could hypothetically follow along if they wanted to.
Drinking game: Take a shot, every time "bomb" is mentioned in this video.
Update, im now dead.
hhopital
Sorry, not enough bullets
This is a complete perversion of one of my favourite games of all time, and I kept finding myself saying "wtf" at each bizarre chain of glitches... I loved it. Well played, that was an incredible watch, and really informative for people who aren't involved with the speedrunning/glitch community! I like that you didn't even bother trying to explain how SRM glitches work; I certainly can't blame you. All my knowledge comes from a speedunning youtuber, but it's a tricky concept to grasp. It truly is devastating to learn that you could beat this game without needing to clear any of the temples though... Ah well, I grok progress, so this was a treat!
Usually when I see videos like this in my recommended, it's usually involving someone not doing anything interesting with the run and giving up the second the run got harder even though there were ways to avoid failing the run, but I was really pleasantly surprised to see you actually use no masks and use interesting glitches to complete the run, that made for a really fun video to watch so thank you for going the extra mile there.
Thank you SO MUCH for explaining the exact setups that you use for these tricks. Many people will explain the trick but they don't explain what they are lining up on the screen to get the correct angles and positions, so when I do them myself it is a lot of trial and error.
Yeah, I've experienced the same issue! I like to explain things so that people unfamiliar could hypothetically try it out for themselves... though I can't say I'd recommend it, haha.
"Ah, yes...Zelda. if I remember, you're the little guy who deposited 700000000 Rupees."
2:22 wow that's rich!!!
This is such a cool run! Thanks for explaining everything in detail. Half the time I watch challenge runs I have no idea what's going on, but this was great!
You definitely deserve a like & subscribe for the effort & hard work it took to pull this challenge off. It pays off for sure! Great work!
Thanks very much!
Goht's fight was so intense, like a good expresso on a monday morning. I loved how Zelda shot so many arrows, side jumping to avoid Goht's electricity. It was so tense but finally Zelda made it. I loved that fight
Just found your channel last night and I gotta say, you make some of the most interesting challenge runs for games. I binged all your videos already and absolutely adore them. I hope there's much more to come.
omg yaaaaay new mandatory pixel video. youre always making videos with my favorite games
Thanks very much! I enjoy seeing your comments when I put up a new video :)
0:20 I felt so bad for that Goron when I realized I took his room/key, and he had to sleep outside. It's crazy how I got emotionally attached to pixels as part of a game program, but the game really hits hard on the emotions. Very well made!
It’s an absolute crime that you don’t have more subs. This feels like any TH-camr with hundreds of thousands of subs doing a challenge run. Excellently played and discussed with perfect editing and timing. Please make more videos like this!
Thanks a lot, that's quite the compliment! :)
Great job! MM Is also my favorite Zelda, so it's very cool to see you utilize so many glitches to skip using all masks :D
I love the fact that i can't beat majora without a guide and hes doing this. You awesome man keep going
Definitely one of the most technically impressive and well done challenge runs I've seen.
I must say the climb up to snow point is absolutely mental. Such a great video mate.
There are a lot of challenge videos on youtube nowadays and most of them are very same-y but I tell you every subsequent trick in this video had me flabbergasted it was just one insane game breaking strategy after another. Very well done!
Great video man. You post very rarely but I know every video will be of high quality. I hope this video becomes one of your best yet!
Thank you! I'd like to post videos more often, but they take a long time to make, haha. I'm glad there are people who look forward to my uploads :)
I love how you describe your crazy challenges. I watched both of your zelda videos. Soon the Paper Mario and RPG ones have to be watched. Thx for your entertaining content here!
No problem! Thank _you_ for watching it!
20:41 link needs to play seige those peeks were crazy
Hey dude! I just wanna say I recently discovered your channel and it’s my new favorite!!! I watch a video before bed while I play (or replay) a zelda game, and then I restart it to fall asleep to! Your content is amazing, keep it up!
Wow, thank you very much! That's quite flattering. :) I'm glad you're liking them!
This is the most creative and most impressive run I have ever seen in this game
Your explanation of setups is incredibly thorough! Great video.
Thank you! I try to explain things thoroughly enough for someone new to the glitches to understand them, without going on for so long that it seems overwhelming, so I'm glad when I hear people enjoyed them :)
What a video… what a concept… thanks for explaining everything, and you did it pretty fairly and concisely.
The way you explain speedrun tricks is really impressive, it explains the process on how to do it in very simple terms while not taking too much time to explain.
Thanks very much! My goal is to explain things well enough that someone new to the glitches could hypothetically follow along, without dragging on so long that those familiar with them get bored.
I was stuck at collecting bottles and pieces of hearts in my own playthrough so i needed to cool off and I saw this. This is so interesting to watch, peak content. You earned a new subscriber, looking forward for your future runs! :)
Thanks very much! Good luck finishing your playthrough!
My jaw is on the floor. Clearly so much effort went into making this, thank you so much
Really solid video, I enjoyed watching you progressively do more an more broken strats to progress. (Love that you start the run getting moons tear and end doing SRM to do moonwarp)
Also GG getting the SuperSlide Lullaby skip with no prior experience, that's no small feat.
Also, Also, Appreciate the shoutout, not that you ended up needing a GBT BK skip XD.
Thanks! I guess the glitches did tend to get more and more complex as it went on, haha.
And no problem! Thanks for your suggestions!
Awesome Video Bro! Interesting Challenge!
Knowing there’s months in between your uploads is understandable but I love these Zelda videos. Subscribing waiting for the next upload
Thanks very much, I'm glad you like them! Worth noting that this isn't a Zelda-focused channel, so not all the uploads are going to be on Zelda games, but if you're interested in challenge runs in general then you might like the other stuff.
You're so dedicated to pull this off. Very impressive!
I was playing MM this week and wandering exactly this! Glad to find this
this was really cool! Awesome challenge run!!
Actually impressive and mind blowing. Sorcery at it's finest!
You gotta know someone said "challenge accepted" to maskless Great Bay Temple on NSO, after watching this video. That's why I love these types of videos!
I thought this was a very brilliant idea, sir! What other sort of projects can we expect? Perhaps something with Twilight Princess, as I'm curious to see how much that game can be broken, aside from the already known glitches. But, either way, I'll still be here, watching these great videos!
Your channel is underrated! Great video! Keep up the good work!
Thanks very much!
unfortunatley, link never got to discover what the point of the mask is
I stumbled over your channel and the way you describe the game is so calming. Keep up the good work buddy. Maybe someday a Twilight Princess challenge :) 👍
I'm so amazed and shocked at the amount of research and effort put into these videos. New sub for sure! Love the challenges ♥
Thanks very much!
This channel is criminally underrated! Subbing and binging some content! Always nice to see another Canadian
Thanks very much! Hopefully you ended up enjoying the other videos you binged!
This was an insane feat. Well done bro you got a sub ❤️👌🏼
Thanks!
This is flipping lit I’ve never seen this happen before ty for this
"Hey kid, to beat this game youll be cursed by an ancient evil sealed inside a mask, but to defeat that evil youll be cursed with the powers of other races who's souls are trapped in those masks you have to use. Pretty dark right?"
Rage Against the Majora: *"FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME"*
31:15
All of that was actual sorcery.
Nice! I was just randomly curious if this was possible!
Things i learned from this video:
Bombs are absolutely broken
Really enjoyed the video and the depth of detail you went into! 👍
Could have certainly used extra time to read those text prompts, like even doubling the time they're on screen wouldn't hurt, I paused or rewinded multiple times to get all the info. 😅
Totally fair, I usually hate quick text pop-ups like that myself! I generally try to avoid using them as often as I did here, but when I was editing, I felt like there were lots of little things I wanted to clarify that I hadn't put in the script, so I ended up including them like that.
This is a cool challenge run. I could totally see this as one of kaztaleks yearly lotads.
For the entire video… I think to myself “who on earth figures these things out!?”
After I saw the Ocarina of Time young Link only challenge, I thought about doing a Majora's Mask without any transformation masks challenge. However, I have yet to beat the game normally, so I did not want to attempt the challenge yet, at least until I knew more about the game. Then when I saw this video, I thought "Dang, someone had the same idea", and now when I watched, I found out your the same guy who did the Ocarina of Time challenge! Well, even though you proved this challenge possible, I will probably attempt it at some point, and hopefully when I do, there will be a way to access the Great Bay Temple without the Zora Mask.
Also, I find it funny how you asked the Majora's Mask speedrunning Discord for tricks and glitches, because I was going to do the exact same thing if I attempted this challenge!
Haha, well, welcome back to the channel, then!
I will say that I think this challenge is easier to recommend trying than the OoT one. Bomb hovers are way easier to pull off in MM, and there were less moments that were boring or tedious. It's pretty fun, for the most part! There were a few parts, like the Big Octo skips, that were very tough, but routing was the biggest issue for me. If you ever do end up trying it, feel free to come back and let me know how it goes!
Amazing video as always
I think it’s absolutely funny that you killing twinmold was actually how I beat Twinmold in my first playthrough, I didn’t know you could use the giant’s mask until 4 years later.
This video isn't in your challenges playlist. Gotta optimize! I freaking love your work and want more to see it! I'm subbed now :)
Strange, it shows up in the playlist on my end! I added it as it was uploading.
I'm glad you enjoyed! Thanks for subscribing!
You're right! UI must have not liked me. My bad.
I love challenge runs like this because it invites limited thinking (which brings creative workarounds)
Runs like these are so healthy for speedrunning because this could create arbitrary situations that invent new speedrunning techniques.
I know that didnt really happen in this run but the part where you got help from the speedrunning discord put the idea in my head and i felt like sharing.
Keep doing runs like these!
I like them too! It's fun to research the game's tricks and glitches to see what's possible.
This is the craziest string together of glitches to beat a game I've seen on TH-cam! Wow!!
Nice job. Shame that you couldn't beat all 4 temples, but still awesome you were able to do 3.
Overall very fun video. :)
Maybe some day you'll be able to do all temples. I think you could do it in Dolphin with Savestates and nobody would complain.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, but Link is so scared of masks after being turned into a Deku that he will NEVER AGAIN put on any mask for the rest of his life.
Not even a Keaton Mask.
Day 2 rain causing magic beans to grow is something I never knew.
That moon jump was legendary
It confuses me how someone could possibly have discovered such precise movement tech to make the skips and clips work
The Owl Statue in front of the ice dungeon, has the best farming spot for some loot extremely fast.
There are a few snow balls you can break for items.
* Bomb
* Arrows
* Magic
* Fairy
If you need any of those, teleport there; get the items, jump off, repeat.
Fiest off let me say this... Tbis was probably the best run i seen so far in a long time. You rewlly beat the game using 0 mask usage. Thats god status
I've beaten all the bosses as regular Link plenty of times... but never beat Goht is such an anti-climactic way XD
And I can just see that Deku guard getting so pissed that it says "Throwing you out of the palace wasn't enough, eh? I'll chuck you to the moon then!"
Well made video
Hope you have a successful youtube career because you deserve it buddy
Thanks very much!
So much pain!!! But you nailed it boss!!
also ty for starting my yearly Oot, Mm, and Tp play through
A lot of tricks you used reminded me of swordlesslink's glitch playthrough of this game!
Makes sense, considering that's where I learned a lot of them!
Glad to see that you made it
Awesome challenge run!
“Where gonna die!”
“That’s actually not the case”
Great video, I subbed!
