  • After having the Tesla Model 3 Performance for 11 days and over 1,100 miles, here’s my review of all the things I don’t like, or things that annoy me, or where it could just be better.
    Just my opinions… but it’s only fair to be transparent and share the negatives and well as the positives (of which there are plenty and are in a separate video, see link below) because the Tesla isn’t quite perfect and there are a few things which could be better… let me know your thoughts in the comments section.

    Isn’t the reason for not having a covered up rear camera, is to enable dash cam footage whilst driving and also all the self driving features. I suspect even Tesla vision cruise control checks the rear and its surroundings at all times. It simply cannot be covered, a washer jet would be better.

    Agree with so many of these points. I moved from a 2020 model 3 to a 2021 Škoda Enyaq. The wipers, the autopilot, the puddle lights, the HUD even the Bluetooth had much greater functionality than the tesla. I think tesla were ground breaking but have now fallen behind in many areas. Without them though we wouldn't have the wide range of EVs we have today.

      @@marsec-1 no, Tesla customer service was appalling so there's no way I would risk buying another car from them. Fine if there are no porblems but useless if there are issues.

      @@enyaq_gorm yet millions of people have found the customer service for tesla great and skoda is a dodgy one.
      It doesn't matter which car company you go with, they all can have good and bad experiences.

      @@stinger15au I am on my 13th Skoda and have had zero issues. My 2nd electric Skoda. I only bought one Tesla and from day 1 it had an A4 sheet of faults/ defects. It took tesla 6 months to even start addressing the issues.
      The car was back in the workshop at least once a month in the 14 months I owned it. I had as much experience of driving Model S loaners as I did of my own car. Eventually Tesla accused me of havign caused some of the paint defects (there were 43 lumps of sand / grit under the paint, quite how I was supposed to have done that is beyond me).
      I can only go by my own experience (though Tesla Facebook groups are full of others with poor experience of Tesla service) and based on that I wouldn't buy another. Several friends and family members have all had Skoda with no issues. Several friends with Model 3 have had multiple issues (though many of them say that's just normal for any car such is their love for Tesla).
      I don't dispute that all brands can have bad experiences, but Tesla were so appalling I had to sell the thing and pass the problem on to someone else to deal with. Basics like windows that close, coolant in the battery cooling system, and paint that's free of sand really are not too much to expect of a car in the 21st century.

    Appreciate the candour in this video, it’s rare to see. Most other reviewers are effusive to a point of parody and one wonders whether they’re being genuine or whether they’re thinking about their future access to these cars.
    A few points:
    - Glad you highlighted the power difference between US and Euro cars. It’s real, even though some people say “US measures BHP differently”. There’s a difference in torque and 1/4 testing shows the US car pulls more at the top end. Disappointing.
    - It’s good that Tesla have finally unlocked adaptive matrix functionality, but it exposes just how few LEDs there are in the lights. It’s very blocky, and seeing big chunks of your light pattern disappear betrays how far behind the pack Tesla are in this department.
    - On the whole I feel like this is what the original Performance should’ve been and looked like from the start, but I would echo that compared to e.g. an BMW M3 it’s still too “safe” in the looks department.
    - Likewise power. 600bhp ought to have been achievable, surely? Since we don’t get a RHD S here (which is a different type of car anyway) it would’ve been nice if there was clear daylight between this and the older Ps, and there just isn’t.

    I'm on my third Tesla starting from 2018. Tesla has made massive improvements and added so many new features. They are still ahead of the pack in the EV world. I looked at other EV's to replace my 2018 Tesla but I came back to Tesla. Only Rivian can match Tesla, everyone else is still years behind.

    In Australia, Tesla have slashed all specs of the model 3 by almost $15k (due to the onslaught of over EV’s coming from China and the fact that we no longer make any cars so our governments don’t need to protect a non existent sector with import tariffs). In plain white the performance is around $80k AUD (or just over £42k). Is an absolute bargain! Tyre noise, tight seats? It’s a car that you need to spend considerably more to get close to that 0-100 kph time! 30 degrees? Try low 40’s and then you’ll know what hot is as 30 is a nice cool summer evening…. Yes a heads up is required, especially for people who are wearing distance enhancing glasses as seeing the screen makes it difficult to read plus you are taking your eyes off what is ahead of you.

      It is a very tempting proposition indeed. It's just a shame about the range with the big distances often needed for Aussie road trips. That's for me the main sticking point that has me unsure whether to pull the trigger on this or play it safe and get the long range again. I was very happy with my 2021 long range.

      @@jful Look at it from a comparison perspective comparing ICE performance vehicles (capable of almost 3 seconds from 0 - 100 kph). These also aren’t designed for high mileage and long distance. Speaking electric the Kia EV6 GT for example has terrible range. In my opinion a small price to pay for overall performance. For me, none of any high performance vehicles owned have been used for any long distance road trips. For these, we now use my wife’s 24 model GLC-300. More comfortable, more space and modest performance characteristics. For me, I average about 600 kilometres per week, have solar power charging with an internal battery so I’m considering stepping up from my 21 Model 3 long range into the new performance purely down to all the changes they have made to distinguish it from the others and make it a better drivers car instead of just making it faster in a straight line. Plus it won’t cost me a cent to charge as I already have the infrastructure in place at home. If it does go on an extended trip then I can live with what would be a reduction in range by approximately 100 kilometres compared to the long range version.

    The UK price includes the destination charges, first registration and the VAT, probably the only place where all of these are included in the advertised price (Australia includes the GST but not destination fees, some European countries include VAT, destination fee and a recycling fee etc.)
    £59,990 includes £935 destination and £55 first registration, excluding these it's £59,000, ex the VAT = £49,167, excluding the import duty = £44,696.
    The US price includes no taxes (these are state based and also no destination fees) is $54,990 = £43,474 - before federal tax incentives, not that much different considering the UK model requires shipping 1/2 way around the world compared to the US model.

      An inferior battery pack with less range , less capacity, slower charging speeds and, critically, less performance than the US counterpart… yeah, really struggling to find negatives.

    I’m glad this doesn’t look to different to the other variations. I’m a financial adviser and if a client thinks my car is too flash, I won’t get paid 😂. Can’t wait to get from 0-60 in 3 seconds. December can’t come quick enough.

    The auto wipers on my software version here in Canada are performing as intended. No more mysterious wiping on a sunny day or driving in a downpour with wipers off, they adjust perfectly to the conditions every time. I think Europe and UK will get this revision soon.

    Wow! Honest negative remarks on a Tesla from a Tesla fan! I did look at Tesla’s before but I didn’t like it and now with the elimination of stalks it’s definitely not on my list.

      Try driving one without the stalks. You very quickly get used to it - why sentence yourself to life with inferior products just because of a decision made over stalks?

Objectively they’re not as good, sure one or two will outperform a Tesla in one or two areas, but overall, Tesla offers the best value, the most reliable, the best software, the safest cars, the best owner experience, the minimum running costs, the most efficiency, the best charging etc etc.

    Personally I’d love Waze integration for the hazard alerts I’m happy with the Tesla mapping I just want to have the Waze alerts I agree on the wipers and reversing camera cover too

    Thank you for being clear and upfront about the positive and also the negative with the new Tesla 3 performance. I appreciate your honesty comparing Tesla with other manufacturers that are catching up quickly. I agree that Tesla is now lagging behind the competition and Tesla needs a major rethink to keep ahead of the competition when I come to spend money I need to now I am buying the most up to date technology.

    I too wish the performance was actually noticeably better over the old car. Look at what they did with the Model S Plaid vs the old Model S P100D Raven - you can't even compare the two the difference is so huge. Yes, they kept the price competitive and made the handling far better etc etc, but it'll barely beat out an M3 xdrive or Ioniq 5n, which is quite a shame as I doubt Tesla will make any meaningful performance upgrades for the foreseeable future.

    Agreed. Aussie here... i wanted a car with 510 horses, not 460. I want 2.9s 0-100, not 3.3 0-100 like fellow aussies are reporting... so in essence, what we get is a car with a comparable 0-100 time of the OLD us model 3P. I thought Tesla said they left stuff on the table with the old model, but seems like they did with this new model as well.

    Hi Richard, great, objective video. Your comment on road noise and UK asphalt is very true. Apart from the noise caused by uneven surfaces (UK issue), the asphalt is a different formulation to the Netherlands and Germany for example. We have just got a Model Y RWD in the UK and have done 1000 miles in a week and we noticed noise is very tarmac dependent across the UK this week. We picked up ours at Manchester Tesla last week and there was a huge batch of M3P awaiting delivering (> 30 cars). In addition i work a lot in the Netherlands and hire M3 and MY frequently. Tarmac noise is much less there. I was in Germany last week and that was also much better. I havent taken readings as yet but subjectively the UK various in Asphalt, condition and therefore noise levels across the road network. Some stats on my MY RWD after covering 1000 miles, varied journeys and fully loaded with towbar and bike rack. Overall average now 4.2 mi/kWh, best 50 mile trip with external temp at 22 C, mix of urban and dual carriageway is 5.3 mi/kWh, 200 mile trip, mainly A1, 20 C, 4-up+luggage and bikes, is 3.8 miles/kWh. All trips in Chill mode. Its the LFP battery therefore 100% charge regularly. Consistently showing 260 mile range at 100% each time with external temp between 12-22 C. We registered ours in June therefore qualified for the 15,000 mile free supercharging offer (valid for 3 years). Superchargers have worked seamlessly at all times. Great site, great videos. One interesting topic for your videos would be tesla car insurance...pretty crazy prices (more than the normal crazy pricing) currently.

    Fair play Richard, you give us the rough and the smooth. The U.K. is one of the most expensive markets globally in which to own and buy a Tesla. I’d like some nicer prices some day soon.

    Rear Camera cannot be covered as it is part of Tesla Vision, Sentry mode and active collision assist, what they really need is like on the Cyber truck a lens cleaning system!

    I agreed with you about the rain sensors a few months ago, but now I find they work well, not 100% perfect but good enough, I did a 100 mile trip in variable rain conditions a couple of weeks ago and they worked fine

    Worse than stalks is having 3 cars in the family and each car has a different function for the right hand stalk. On one car it's gear selector, on car #2 it's a turn signal and car #3 it's wipers! When I swap between cars muscle memory is useless. No standardization means no stalks is a huge benefit. It's maddening when you think your selecting drive and you've thrown the wipers on. Or you think your throwing a left turn signal and in reality you're trying to throw it in reverse. Plus the stalks are hidden and for wiper settings or lights the labeling can't be seen anyway. Or is it just bad luck my 3 cars all have different stalk functions. Ugh.

    Thanks for your honest reviews. It's frustrating when reviewers only talk about the good things and if you listen to the Tesla faithful they will try to convince you Tesla are the best at absolutely everything.

      You either go for the SR or the Performance. I see no reason to buy a LR instead of a P..you get worse brakes, worse seats, worse performance and worse looks, for just a little bit of price difference. You can drive the performance nearly as efficient as the LR..obviously you gonna loose some range but not so much that it would actually affect real life. If you dont need performance and all that just get the SR..you get the most robust battery, you actually can use 100% without killing your battery, get all the highland optimisations and its still quick enough 99% of the time..I own a 22 M3P and Im seriously considering switchting to the SR Highland.

      ​@infinityfumble I guess you are US based? The price difference is €7k here between LR and P. LR has quite a bit more range and can tow twice as much as well.

    Don’t forget UK Tesla FSD running software from 2016, only need to jump on TH-cam and see where version 12 FSD is at to see they are light years ahead. Fingers crossed it will be in UK soon.

    Got same mine this week and everything is fine. Small cons, obviously. But its budget car, great for commuting and having bit of fun on the road. Price wise I coildnt find anything with similar performance close to this price range.And with PV in the garden and low electricity rates ( at least where I live) its very cost efficient. But still cannot imagine not having second normal petrol car in the garage.

    The reason why Tesla cost more in UK and Europe compared to the USA and other markets, is that our sales tax is higher therefore we pay more. The actual real cost of a £60k car is £48k minus 20% vat ,sales tax. Plus most global products are priced differently depending on local markets. So not really fair to compared UK price compared to other countries

      Interesting, I just compared the price here in Australia. It is about 85k on the road for a base model performance which converts to 44800 British pounds. We have 10 percent GST and a small amount of duty, maybe a couple of percent all included in the price of 85 k AUD.

      That’s partially true : in Italy we have 22% VAT and the M3P costs around 48k GBP. In this instance sales tax is not the reason

      In Portugal we have 23% vat and M3P coats 56000 €, witch I think is 47400 GBP

      @@sidneyshaw9999 Import duty was removed from electric cars entering Australia in June 2022. The general import duty for other cars is still 5%.

      @@TB-up4xi Thanks for that TB I was unaware. I just checked border force web site and as long as it is an EV under about 85k it comes in duty free. That means only GST of 10% is applied here in Australia to a model 3 since China has an FTA. Then of course the on-road costs. Still seem a big difference though.

    I have the Model 3 RWD Highland and agree over the rain sensor and the roof heating a balding head. Also at over 6' it would be nice if the rear boot was adjustable to a higher level. The "autopilot" at the free level is far superior to any similar priced car as the adaptive cruise would be at the set speed or the speed of the vehicle it was following with no concern for corners!
    The Tesla also slows but a little too much as you say, but this is better than not doing so and makes me more excited for the full self drive.

    I just wish Tesla would add a maximum speed setting so when your driving without autopilot or cruse control you could set the maximum speed to say 30 mph but still be driving it yourself. Plenty of other cars have this function but not Tesla.

    Puddle lamps, heads up display, heat reflective glass or sun roof cover, air con that can be properly directed onto the driver, vehicle to load outlet. Basic features Tesla needs to implement and get right.

      Tesla offers a dozen things other's don't. Some people consider them essential, some people don't think they are necessary at all.
      A heads up display you could argue is important, but then again, I have turned it off and never used it in any car I have had with it so that means nothing to me.
      Also the air con works just fine *shrug* maybe it's because I'm short, but it's perfect for me.
      Tesla is still by far the best overall package, but there is always going to be someone who does something better.

    Hey change the setting for your auto pilot will follow the exact speed signs you have it set to follow traffic. All you need to do is change to follow speed signs and maybe set a 10% offset to go 55 in a 50.

    Regarding the air vents, you can pull them together on the screen. I do that all the time and I can get air to blow directly on my face.

    My previous Model 3 Performance (a 69 plate) had the heat reflective roof. Unfortunately Tesla managed to break the rear section when changing a boot seal. I was gutted. Not least because they couldn't source a replacement one. So it ended up with standard glass at the back.

    I’ve had my new 24M3P for a few weeks and the Turning buttons keep getting stuck, and that’s after having it serviced and supposedly fixed.

    Interesting you still find the wipers aren't good. 2 updates ago my wipers are fixed now. Work fine now.
    I actually had the wipers start aggressively wiping a second before i was passed by a truck ans sprayed

    Instead of covering the rear camera, there could be a washer fluid. Some cars have that. I don't know how well it works, but it's better than nothing I suppose. You can't really cover it up since it is needed all the time for Autopilot and FSD.

    Very honest review, i have a model 3 highland , i agree to all. Tesla also need to step up on the door dash interior that is somehow off center. I would love to see how they put the door panels togheter because something is not right in production. Tesla actually said that when cars arrive at dealers on many cars they must adjust the doors cause the door touch on the dashboard side when closed, so i dunno.
    Another thing is that i drive in salty roads all winter and i was told that the guarantee is broken if i have it tectyled for corrosion prevention , never heard of that for any other car. And also make darker tint on windows like other cars.

    I’m sure it is a setting to make Autopilot change speed if the speed limit increases. We have it set for the same as you as it’s easy to just tap the speed limit on the car for when it changes speed limit. Also we wouldn’t want the car to increase

    As others have said, VAT and other tax account for some of our higher pricing in the UK. There is also the RHD factor which manufacturers claim impacts scale economies. But then the motor (and other) industry have traditionally called the UK "Treasure Island"

    Holding to the speed limit while in autopilot is a big risk. Imagine if it falsely interpreted a sign as having 10mph on a freeway, and your car suddenly slowed down. The only way would be to have some threshold logic.

    I own 2 and completely agree with all your points. Great video. If we don't push Tesla to improve they won't. My biggest gripe is no rear collision warning when backing up.

    In my view the fact the 2024 tesla M3LR is better in virtually every way than the 2019 one and it cost virtually the same despite 30%+ inflation is amazing really. We didn't buy a m3 refresh 1.5 because it wasn't different enough to the 2019 one. 2024 is pretty much all the car you ever need and the network and integration into the car is simply better than the rest

    I’ve just got the ionic 5 after testing the model 3. I think Hyundai have overtaken tesla for both charging speed and tech, it’s also quieter and more comfortable. Hyundai also has a great app which can control everything you can in the car. You can even get the car out of the garage with the key. I also like the buttons and having stalks for the indicators and the auto wipers work! Only downside for me with the ionic 5 was the price, I got the Namsan which was £56k which is ridiculous but that’s the ripoff country we live in.

    [2:00] Things sold in the UK for a higher price with a lesser specification is a trend that has existed since before Tesla sold it's first EV. This is nothing new. Cars in general, tech, equipment, digital media, accessories, gadgets and many other items would be sold at a higher price here than in other countries having had some of their specs tweaked downwards or removed altogether. I remember someone quoting that you could fly from the UK to Sweden, buy a wardrobe from IKEA and fly it back to the UK for less money than it would cost to buy the wardrobe direct from your local IKEA in the UK. This is how commerce works here.

    Autopilot: I only use it on motorways tbh. But a biggie that I’m surprised you’ve not mentioned is when overtaking (on EAP, so changes lanes for you, on motorway), it takes ages to start increasing speed. It only does it once you are fully in the lane, which becomes es really awkward as to me, once you are fully in the lane you should be at the speed that you wanted/meant to be so I often find myself accelerating a little as I change lanes.. not deal breaker but little annoying. My bmw i3 6 years ago did it much better.

    I noticed as I was walking the Tesla delivery center parking lot to pickup my 2024 M3P that the LED strip from the front of the door panel that meets the dash, that it does not line up on a lot of the cars on one side including mine 🤬. Some were perfect. I guess it’s just the luck of the draw but it does sure bother me. I hope Tesla service and can do something about it and just not say its within spec 😒

    I remove a post on inicial video...related with feeling and specs of performance since i was care to be miss understand. Since i have a 2019 stealth perfomance with 18 wheels ...i found very similar and ONLY feel maybe a bit Pull after 120..130 KMS.
    Since i agree with most of good and bad things you Said...i want to remember that.. the car now lower ( in some Park and road Touch more easy down part) and the consume is much more then previous...a lot!!!
    Since elétric car autónomy in King...this is a step back!!! This car Will make on some speeds some 30..40..maybe 50 KMS less then previous with that 79..75 usable baterie.

    No rear wiper on my 2019 Model 3 LR. When it rains rearward visibility is awful. Still no change on the latest models including Highland. Not enough to stop me buying a Highland, but come on Tesla. How hard would it be to fit a rear wash wipe? And grab handles. No grab handles. As my wife reminds me every time she struggles out of the car. Yeah, grab handles. You'd have thought wouldn't you?

    The autopilot in the uk is severely held back by eu regulations. Even standard autopilot is considerably better in the USA.

    Nearly all the dislikes except the pointless 30 profile tyres are due to cost cutting by Tesla which would be fine on a £25k car but not on one nearer £60k. Also a true performance car as opposed to a faster Tesla for Tesla devotees should really have a proper driver interface to be able to change modes, regen etc without taking hands of wheel, plus an in line of sight display. Hyundai for example who have a great track record of producing performance models full understand this.

    I think the Performance was a missed opportunity. Considering that it is clearly not a single-minded radical performance car, it would have been better to go for a Tesla Model 3 PRO, rather than performance. More performance, yes, but more everything. First and most important, a more modern battery, more energy dense, lighter, like Porsche has done, and faster charging. Then, the interior upgrade feels watered down... There should be more differences, perhaps some different colors hints, better components (maybe an upgraded screen, perhaps a behind the wheel screen)... Finally, make it stand out, make sure someone paying the money truly stands out, which is what people paying premium want. If adding obvious changes to the exterior is too expensive, then perhaps exclusive, more eye-catching paint colors? Same with tire covers, make them look more obviously different, etc.
    In short, a true, overall upgrade over the rest of the line and one that is unmistakable at a glance. I think that would make it much more attractive for anyone with the extra cash.

    Richard it’s good that as a “Fanboy” you have also driven a ton of other EVs as I find I get headaches from serial Tesla owners who have never driven another make of EV and experienced some of the things other EVs get as standard that aren’t even an option on any Tesla. Yes I’ve driven a Model Y for 28 days on a touring holiday and would I buy one for myself NO, too many things not there that for the price of the MY I have as standard on my own EV that cost less and it’s a European built EV not a Chinese one.

    Great video, my take is what I’ve been feeling for some time….. Tesla are falling slightly behind for the First time. Worryingly it’s a mix of tech, hardware but most of all these cars basically look the same and have done for more than 10 years. The best feedback I can give is my farther in law feels he can now get better value with legacy makers 🙈 even after I’ve been telling him for years Tesla are the best. I have to concede I’m beginning to wonder.

    The Model 3 is a mass market and more affordable vehicle so design decisions have been made with price in mind. If you want premium features like 22-way adjustable seats then buy a more premium vehicle.

    I love my 2024 M3P. Can handle the indicator buttons, but I miss the lane change (three click) option from my 2022 model. The buttons auto cancel is hit and miss and doesn’t work for roundabouts

      The auto cancel for me works perfectly in my new m3p. Roundabouts where I live in the US, no one uses turn signals entering or exiting them.

    I agree with your negatives, especialy the autopilot and tire noise. (it sounds almost like a noisy ICE engine, depending on the surface)
    These 2 things are always praised I dont know why... Truth is, they're just getting horrible at times !

      A lot of things can and will be fixed via software updates, especially FSD which is radially improving with 12.4+

      As for tire noise, that's almost 100% dependent on the tires, it's a performance tire, it makes noise, whether it's a ferrari, tesla or anything else.
      Put 18" eco tires on there and it's extremely quiet

    It's a sedan, if the rear it's not as roomy or the boot not as wide it's NORMAL and it's GREAT like that. Thanks god it's not another SUV like the Ioniq or any other car out there these days. Oh and the absence of lights in the door handles is a great think, i can't stand those Audi, Mercedes and BMW owners with logo projectors under the door or stupid illumination around the interior and exterior (illuminated grill)

    Reason for the cost comes down to numbers, they likely only sell 5% right hand steering globally and that is going to increase the price over the North American, EU versions.

    Why do you guys always complain about the wipers. I always use manual adjustment. Either adjust wiper speed straight from the steering wheel or use voice control. Also, Im not a chrome dome, but I am an Aussie, so I know about heat. The first thing I bought for my M3 plus was a glass roof shade. I use it nine months of the year (brilliant).Talk about wingeing poms 😂

    Excellent and fair minded video. I agree that it is still an excellent car but ongoing signs that it is behind or falling behind other manufacturers in certain areas. I still feel variable regen via steering wheel paddles should be on all EVs and DEFINITELY V2L etc. I mean, the fact that you have an almost 80kWh battery sitting there, should be useable for other things,if needed. I always say all EVs should have frunks which Tesla has of course. An interior electronic sunblind would be better than a reflective surface or electro chromatic glass like on latest Renault Scenic etc, but again not a deal breaker.

      Tesla is ahead only at:
      1. mobile phone app and tech integration.
      2. energy consumpion
      3. luggage space
      4. price considering all the "very good" things you get.

    Australian model is like US.
    Bigger battery and 26 minutes charging to 80%.
    It is important to acknowledge that it is a 80K AUD car and yet provides performance of a supercar in daily driving. I have owned a rear wheel AMG E as well as Alpina B5. And I can say in my personal experience Model 3P rides tighter than AMG and in ride approaches Aloina without being boaty.
    It is a slick package
    Nothing is perfect though.
    But if compared to Porsche or I5 BMW, be prepared to spend double the money quite easily May be more.

      I don;t think so, the Australian model comes out of Shanghai with the LG battery. A Porsche Taycan in Australia is about $240k on the road so just an irrelevance for most.
