I’ve always wanted a Tesla, not because it’s an EV but because it has FSD. Ever since test driving a model 3 way back in 2019 I was convinced a Tesla would be my next car. However at the time my wife drove an old 2011 Malibu and I didn’t want to have to use that Malibu for family road tripping. Although road tripping an EV isn’t that bad and is getting better each day it was just something I didn’t want to mess with. So I leased a 2019 Ram 1500, a vehicle I planned to have until my wife got a new car. However we all know what happened in 2020 and I ended up buying out my lease as that was the only real option. Fast forward to 2024 my wife now drives a 2021 GMC Arcadia so I was back in the market. While I waited I decided I wanted something with a bit more performance then a long range model Y so I decided I get the New 2024 model 3 performance. After having this car now for about a month and driving it just shy of 1000 miles what are my thoughts and did I make the right choice.

We thought we'd use the Toyota Camry for road trips, but it turns out the Model 3 so much more fun to drive, has better cargo space and charging with Superchargers was easy. I need those breaks every 2-3 hours too. With planning, we take it to remote locations as well.

I bought a 2024 MYLR a few months back. I have never enjoyed driving a car so much in my life, not even the sports cars I have had. I now spend about 25% of what I was spending on gas to power this car, and FSD - as imperfect as it can be sometimes - has already prevented me from having multiple accidents. If you think about it, having the FSD prevent even one accident that would have totaled the car effectively pays for the car by doing so. I got FSD because no matter how safe a driver I am, I still cannot prevent others from crashing into my car (2x in the last 11 months, one drunk and one playing on her phone). So to keep my family safe, I bought the safest car I could find (a Tesla Model Y) and got FSD. As long as no more idiots crash into me, I expect to have this car until the battery self destructs from age in 15 to 18 years. At that point, with how the price of batteries is going down and the range is going up, if they still make batteries that fit this car I'd bet a dollar that a 1,250 mile battery will cost something like $25. The value you get from Tesla vs the price is incredible, especially when you keep the car for a long time.

What you seem unaware of is that one of the great benefits of FSD or Autopilot is that they're *always* aware of what's going on 360° around the car, and can react instantly to a threat from any direction; while a human driver can only be aware of what's going on where he's looking at the moment, and even then has a substantial delay before taking any action. *That's* why Teslas with FSD engaged have orders of magnitude fewer accidents, injuries and fatalities that average drivers.

    • @noseboop4354
      @noseboop4354 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@BigBen621 Have you looked at global vehicle accident stats? Injuries and fatalies on the road are fives times higher in the USA than most european countries. A testament to how bad the drivers are due to poor education and very low standards to get a license. In places like Germany and Norway where people learn how to do defensive driving, accidents are higher with full FSD because the roads in Europe aren't all straight and well marked, they twist around, have more pedestrians and cyclists, and traffic lights are at the beginning of the intersection, much harder for cameras to see, rather than the other side of the intersection. Driving aids for cars is the same as flying aids for pilots, it helps bad pilots from making stupid mistakes, but doesn't help them become good pilots.

Not sure what you're saying here. FSD isn't available in these countries; where is it you're claiming accidents are higher with full FSD?
_Driving aids for cars is the same as flying aids for pilots_
I would think your claims about high accident rates in the US would increase the argument for driving aids, especially since FSD (Supervised) is demonstrated to reduce accidents, injuries and deaths so dramatically.

Road trips become so enjoyable, no more gas stations and dirty toilets, most Tesla superchargers have restaurants, shopping and coffee shops. Perfect for a 15 to 30 minute break. With EV critics talking about how the government is "forcing" them to buy an EV, you'd think an IRS agent will show up at their house, point a gun to their head, march them to the closest dealer, and force them to drive off in an EV.
Or they suddenly become environmentalists who are concerned with how EVs are more polluting than gas cars, and how EV batteries will destroy landfills with toxic materials, including mining cobalt from the tears of African children.
When you let them know cobalt is also used to refine oil into gas, or how the US military is deployed/stationed in regional hot spots to keep oil flowing relatively smoothly, it seems to completely fly over their head and they will either stop replying, or they resort to childish name calling because you've debunked most if not all of the EV myths they claim.

It is our only car, and I don't have any issues road tripping w/ the abundance of superchargers. Navigation takes care of the worry. Most charging stops aren't to 100% and you're stopping every 2 or so hours for 20 minutes, which is plenty of time to stretch, use the facilities, etc.

You should at least try using it on a road trip. It’s honestly not that big of a deal. You can drive for around 4 hours and most people will need a bathroom break after that long anyway. By the time you all use the restroom and possibly buy snacks or drinks, your car is charged up.
Will the total trip take longer? Yeah but only by a little bit. But it will be drastically cheaper and more pleasant of a trip thanks to FSD. You won’t be as tired because you can relax your brain by letting the car do the bitch-work of driving.

I wasn't convinced on road-tripping an EV until a buddy walked me through the typical fill-up at a gas station and a typical charging stop. I won't go into the same level of detail (because it was boring) but the tl;dr was that you pull up, gas up, move the car, use the bathroom, get back to/in the car, and head out. I think he added it up to about 15min.
He then did the same for an EV stop where you park, plug in, use the bathroom, get back to/in the car which took 12min. His (and my) _typical_ charge time is about 20min (just 5min more than gas). Needless to say, he talked me into giving it a shot and he was pretty much spot-on. Now, this _does_ fall apart a little bit in those rare situations where you need to charge for 40min, but that's the exception (not the norm) and I just make those stops the times I eat. You gotta' plan a little ahead to make sure the stop either has someplace with food nearby, or that you'll be rolling up to the charger with food in-hand, but doing that planning is how I spend those surplus 8 minutes at the previous stop.

Teslas are very easy to drive long distances in because if you really don't want to think about it too much, you can just tell the car where you want to go, and it'll plot the route, add superchargers along the way, and even tell you how long to charge for at each supercharger. Meanwhile you can get out of the car every 2-3 hours, stretch your legs, go to the bathroom, and grab a bite to eat while it's charging for 15-30 minutes. Often the car is ready to go long before I finish my meal at sit-down restaurants.

Other than that I would never go back to full gas for a daily. No maintenance and $7 for 200 miles is way too nice. Maybe a good plug in hybrid, but no one makes a decent one yet. They're all very low EV range that can't even cover 1/2 my commute.
Having said that I've taken the tesla on many US road trips without much drama. I live in MN, so getting anywhere cool takes a long time. Been to Kentucky, Yellowstone, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana, and more. The times I've travelled with other people using gas vehicles they weren't really waiting on me as most people wanted a stop break every few hours anyway.
What we really need are more level 2 charges at hotels. That would make road and work trips a lot easier.

I think everyone goes through "range anxiety" when they first own an EV. I'm no different. When I first got my Ioniq 5, I was afraid to go any farther than work which is only 13 miles each way. After a few months I got very comfortable with the commute and traveling around town so I decided I wanted to be brave and go on a road trip which was a total of 360 miles. I found a hotel at my destination that had complementary level 2 charging and was able to charge overnight and return home easily. Success! (and a rewarding feeling). The next step was to take a longer trip and try out the available charging networks out there, which Tesla - bar none - has the best in the US! Low and behold another milestone and confidence builder achieved! It's been a year since I took the plunge and I would not hesitate to jump in my car and take a trip anywhere in the US with a little smart planning. It's so relaxing and quiet driving my EV over anything else I have owned before. I think the fact that most of the weight is low and centered makes the car handle extremely well. Plus having all that power available to punch out of any bad situation in an instant is so gratifying! 😉

FWIW, our 2018. Model 3 with its now-dinky ~250 miles of range has been our primary road-trip car for nearly six years. When lunch stops and bathroom breaks are factored in, the elapsed-time difference between the Tesla and an ICE vehicle doesn’t amount to much. And on trips of 200 miles or so, there’s no difference at all.

the problem with tesla not offering android auto or car play is the long term support. eventually your car will go EoL in terms of software support but it may still be perfectly safe to drive as a second third or forth hand vehicle for someone else especially with battery replacements assuming they become more readily available. if tesla stops supporting their software and something causes a breaking change that makes allot of the software accessories to stop working atleast in terms of phone linking, its moot at that point. adding android auto or carplay or both will allow the vehicle to maintain the phone linking features with a different package sure but it will be there.

I bought a new truck once. That was 22 years ago. Still drive it daily.
    8:30
The no physical buttons thing is because you have to take your eyes off the road to know what you're pressing and go through menus, and take your hand off the wheel while you're doing it, whereas with a physical button you know by feel and you don't have to take your eyes off the road, nor is there a menu to get to the thing you actually want, like the radio, or the heater/window defroster, or the headlights if they don't turn on by themselves. The tactile feedback of switch, and the shape of the switch tells you enough that you don't even need to look at it do do what you need to do. Now this might not seem like such a big deal out in the countryside where you are and "traffic" means there are 6 cars on the road at the same time... ;P (Kidding) But for those of us in the big city where the freeways are either going 80mph or are a parking lot for hours, taking your eyes off the road even for a half second, it can be a problem (considering you travel 60 feet in that half second)... It is a problem. We have multiple accidents daily because of distractions. Drivers are already distracted enough as it is, we have laws against using your hands to even answer your cell phone (must be hands free so you don't have the distractions of looking for it, taking your hand off the wheel to reach for it, keeping your hand off the wheel while you talk on it, on top of the distraction of talking on the phone in the first place), so we really shouldn't be encouraging drivers to "play with touch screens and browse through menus" when they should be focused on the road with both hands on the wheel. Even GPS devices are supposed to at least give you a warning that you aren't allowed to "set or make changes to the device" once you're no longer parked as soon as they power on.
Also about the turn signal, I can flip the lever with my pinky finger on my left hand without taking my hand off the steering wheel. I can't see where it is, your video doesn't show where "here" is when you say "I don't mind it being here" (maybe I missed it being pointed out), but if it requires me to take my hand off the wheel or readjust it to a different location just to hit the signal, I'd be opposed to it as well, but if it were like paddle shifters, I'd be all for that on more vehicles.
One final thought, for years the state and local governments here have been telling us to reduce our power usage, turn off lights you aren't using, set your A/C to higher temps during the day, etc... Because the grid can't handle all of our electric needs... Now they're all about trying to force everyone to get electric cars... Last I checked, the power grid was problematic enough and we're having issues with generating enough as well, which is why we are supposed to conserve energy wherever and whenever we can, yet "BUY ELECTRIC CARS AND PLUG THEM ALL INTO THE GRID!!!!!" That just makes no damned sense to me. Either the grid is a problem and we need to reduce our electricity consumption, or all of our electric bills are too damned high because we've been getting lied to for decades because our grid is just fine and we should all switch to electric cars and plug them all in. No thanks, I'll stick to gasoline until the power companies all come out and say, we have fixed the grid, we will never have another black out, brown out, or any other issue because of our transmission system and your power bills are being being slashed to half or less than that.

What I really love (esp on Road Trips) is the Autosteer. Plus if I put on my signal it will automatically change into the lane for me (if its safe) which is cool. The Model 3 is really nice but the Y was just more practical for me and the family having the extra space. A lot of fun driving this vehicle. BTW when in FSD/Autosteer and it starts nagging you for some steering wheel feedback you can just move up/down any one of the scroll wheels just even one click and you're good.

No physical buttons with no feedback is a really bad UX choice.

You should sync up with @DirtyTesla. They live out in the same state.

I’ve owned gas cars most of my driving life and have now owned a Tesla for over 7 years and 117k miles. I take a road trip all the time in my Tesla and love it. The charging stops are not bad because it matches my driving habits of wanting to stop every few hours. I don’t enjoy cannonball run style road trips. The car is often ready to go before I am. But unlike almost all haters, EV owners actually know both sides. And Tesla owners stick with Tesla.

"Do you live in Florida, where it's always warm, and you can charge at your house, and you drive 20 feet to work every day?"
    ✔Lives in Florida
    ✔Charges at home
❌Drives 20 feet to work every day
You almost had me for a second there. It's *at least* 30 feet to work for me, but I don't drive in my house so I have to walk the entire distance. Still, I love my 2019 Model 3 (Standard).

I don't believe that. No geezer in Florida has an actual "job!"

I took delivery of my model 3 performance a couple of weeks ago ironically I ordered mine the very first day It was available as well.
I can understand wanting to track the car. But be very careful the brakes are not up to it. I'm loving the car for a daily driver it is stupid quick and very comfortable and nearly silent. But fair warning for track use in the brakes are not up to it. It took me less than a minute to get the brakes smoking hot. Granted as a younger man I used to race a bit so I may push harder than the average Joe but they're simply not up to truly spirited driving if you're going to track it you're going to need to either do very short spurts or you're going to need a big brake kit and possibly some ducting to get air to them.
Another thing I replaced the 20-in wheels with 18-inch wheels from t-sport line to provide me a little bit more protection in the event of a pothole or on a track getting a rumble strip or a curb.
Apologies for any spelling or grammar errors I'm using voice
