  • Heart palpitations, shortness of breath, but your heart is fine?
It's scary when your heart starts racing, skips beats or you're short of breath. Add some chest tightness or pain to the equation and a visit to the ER or your local doctor is not a bad idea.
But what happens when you've had the ER visit (or more than one) and you've visited your doctor or cardiologist and you're "assured" all is well.
It's good to know that your heart appears normal, but it doesn't help much when it's again pounding in your chest or you feel short of breath.
What's REALLY going on? You may be surprised at the answer.
    Give a listen.

You have explained sooo much!!! I've had digestive issues my entire life (literally) and have an hiatal hernia that has caused serious problems. I've had unexplained high HR....until now! You just gave me the answer to that question lol. I'm going in to see a GI because it's gotten so bad that there are very few foods I can eat now that will go down without getting stuck. I didn't want surgery but I don't think I have much of a choice if I want to live a normal life. Anyway, thank you so very much for answering this very important question! Blessings to you💙💜💙💜

This has been so helpful. I have recent diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer with a large 9 x 12 cm tumour on the left ovary and metastases in the omentum - awaiting date for debulking surgery. My main problem has been worsening shortness of breath on exertion and an expanding girth. I have had diagnosis of small hiatus hernia in the past and had ablation for SVT. Of course it has been a very stressful couple of months since diagnosis and I've noticed occasional 'ectopics' when stressed and heart rate goes up briefly to around 125 bpm (I wear a fitbit) when I feel the ectopic but settles down to my normal 75-80 quickly. I now think these ectopics are caused by the pressure in my abdomen and on my diaphragm causing just the problem you discuss of a sliding hiatus hernia. I had an ECG about a month ago and everything was fine/normal - so there you go.

I am at a loss for words, wow. Dr.vikki you literally listed off everything single thing I've been experiencing for the past couple of months. From the doctors telling me it's just anxiety and just putting me on medication, to all the symptoms. Thank you so much for this video and all of your work. I will for sure be looking more into this and hopefully find a solution to my problems.

Here I am, stumbling across this video after I figured all of this out on my own. Having to walk the Doctors through their own process so that they can see the same thing was like a bad dream. But it is finally getting taken care of. Helpful information like this is needed as there are so many physicians that believe they are High Almighty and know everything and patients need to be able to have the information to ask the right questions and get the right help.

I've been struggling to breathe for a year and a half, Doctors tried to say it was anxiety and all in my head. I was adamant that something was wrong, along with the shortness of breath, I also had heartburn, sore throat, constant throat clearing and now difficulty swallowing with choking episodes. The e.n.t doc was so annoyed with me when I bought up the breathing issue and proceeded to diagnosed me with LPR with Anxiety with somatization, and all this over the phone, not once have they bothered to check my throat or food pipe even after requesting for both to be looked at, I went to the ER several times, till eventually they checked my heart, lungs and confirmed all clear. The last few years have been rough and im at my lowest, everyday is a battle! Doctors have literelly ignored my pleas for help and left me feeling unvalidated. I really want to show these videos to the doctors in the hope that they will empathise with me but they dont want to listen, lost faith in the health system.

Your video is so helpful. It feels like someone just gets it. Doctors, ERS, tests, lab work, everytime eveything comes back as normal which yes I am happy for, but I also feel like I know I am not crazy. Or am I exaggerating the situation (when I know I am not, I am just making excuses when tests comes back normal). I do feel I have had plenty of stomach issues in the past. I am currently in the process of waiting for thyroid tests to come back because after doing plenty of research I thought maybe I am suffering from Hyperthyroidism. So far my electrolytes and everything are normal, but have not heard back about thyroid yet. I get sharp chest pains, like spasms. Its painful and freaks me out. I do not have anxiety, (maybe situational) and I am not really stressed. I take deep breaths and recognize when the palpitations start to help ease my anxiety. Does not always help, but acknowledging it rather than freaking out is far more helpful. What do you suggests. I drink tea and use essential oils. I am vegatartian, but at the moment my diet is poor because I thought maybe I could be suffering from Hyperthyrodism

I feel your pain and can totally relate! I've had chest pains for nearly two years and progressively they've gotten worse. At some points feeling like I'm gonna have a heart attack. It's super worrying bc I'm only 27 and don't do drugs or anything. And my cardiologist tells me my heart is fine just telling me it's stress that's causing my chest pains. And I've also had stomach issues for a while now and I get acid reflux real easily. I'm currently experiencing shortness of breath and heart pains as well as acid reflux and my Gastroenterologist just discovered a hiatal hernia so I'm sure that's what's causing my problems. I'm about to go on a very strict diet to help with the reflux and do more cardio to help me lose weight hopefully that'll help with some of my symptoms and help me lead a normal, pain-free life again.

I was seeing a pulmonologist, cardiologist and Gastroenterologist and just like you mentioned in the video, my heart and lungs are fine and doctors were just saying it was stress. But the gastroenterologist did discover a "small" hiatal hernia which I'm sure it's causing all these problems.

They wouldn’t refer me to a specialist And they both acted like it was anxiety and that I was crazy. Both of them offered me meds and we had maybe spoken for 10 minutes. I saw a 3rd doc this morning who referred me to a heart specialist. Mine symptoms happen at the peak of fitness and getting my heart rate up, followed by chest pain. It’s happened maybe 15 times now in the last few years and my heart gets sorer and for longer each time.

This has been going on for me for quite some time now, but its only recently been a concern to me. I’ve had shortness of breath before bed, in the car, and other times when I’m not thinking about things. I want to see a doctor about it but I’m worried my problem won’t be resolved. I thought it was Anxiety which I’ve had mildly since I was 10. (I’m almost 14 by the way) and the breathing problems don’t help because I instantly jump to searching up whatever is going on when something even mildly different is happening to me. This is the one time my research has helped me. I think I can actually go to sleep well tonight knowing I’m not dying. Thank you so much! Hey, I’m happy to hear this video. I’m in my mid twenties with two toddlers, whom I stay home with. The past 9 months has been a rollercoaster. I’ve seen several doctors, dozens of ER visits. Echocardiogram, Pulmonary Lung Function Test, Stress Test, Chest X-rays, etc. ALL NORMAL. It’s like a wild goose chase for answers. Nobody has answers. I get really short of breath the second I stand up and try to do light activity that never phased me before. I can’t eat a lot without feeling like a balloon swelling in my diaphragm. I get crazy heart palpitations everyday, most of the day, and shortness of breath anytime I try to do anything basic with my kids. I’m at a loss, I’m a nervous wreck all the time. I just want to feel normal again, and for the kids to have their fun-loving momma again. I find myself sitting ALOT now because I’m afraid to get up and lose my breath and my heart pound like crazy. Any advice or tips? I literally get dizzy often now, and it’s scary. I cry a lot because I’m scared for my future and this is a never ending vicious cycle for me. It’s taken a mental toll.

You said it's easy fix. Please share the fix! I have been having this very problem off and on. I have klonopin for anxiety and it doesn't touch it!
One day I said, okay, if this is a heart attack let's see. Got on my tread mill and gave a good go. Then lifted some light weights, some squats, and about 30 push ups. Heart rate went up to 120 and within about 20 minuets around 60. I am 64 years old and I do have some type of hernia that's is visual. Another thing I deal with is apnea, but I diligently use my C Pap. What's the fix?

    • @DrVikkiPetersen
      @DrVikkiPetersen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The fix is not something I can tell you to do over the internet because there are differences person to person. Does it include diet change? Often. Does it involve identifying the cause of gut imbalance/infections? Yes, again often. Can it involve the nerves going to the diaphragm coming from the neck? Again, yes. Does the doctor of Physical Therapy work to break the spasm of a high diaphragm? Yes again. There are many factors and we need to identify which are occurring and then fix them. Yes, it's not hard, but it's not a single "pill" for everyone. I know; I wish it was "take vitamin C" or something everyone could just take, but that's just not the case. I hope that makes sense. You can contact us for a free consultation if you're interested.

Hi fascinating reading I’m a 61 year old male who until 3 years ago was extremely fit and healthy. That’s when I started with all the symptoms you have listed for haital hernia. I have had numerous checks done on both my heart and lungs, the lungs are clear and the cardiologist says he has no real concerns though I have some narrowing of one artery. I also had an endoscopy where I was told all was well. Despite all of these tests my quality of life has plumeted mainly due to my shortage of breath. Your description fits my condition perfectly and I will return to my GP (I’m in the UK) with these findings. I wonder if you could tell if this also fits the symptoms of a HH when I bend forward to pull on my socks or fasten my shoes my upper stomach is extremely painful and I feel like my oxygen is being cut off to such an extend that I can only stay leaning forward for a very short period of time. Very many thanks for your help.

One day I was in stress and suddenly I felt like something inside my chest(left side) is exerting outwards. I rushed to cardiologist got my ECG and thyroid test done. My blood pressure was 90/60, ECG suggested Sinus Tachycardia and Thyroid test was normal. Cardiologist told me everything was okay. But I never felt okay after that day.
I used to be an active guy. Workout, yoga and daily 3-4 km of brisk walking was my regular schedule. But out of fear I stopped doing my workouts. I still feel a kind of pressure/heaviness and a burning sensation in my chest. Got my tests done 3-4 times with different doctors.

Hi Vikki, I am from South Africa and am 1000% certain that my hiatus hernia is causing my severe symptoms. I wake up and go to sleep with a shortness of breath. I have had a few scopes and have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia but most doctors seem to think that it isn't the cause to my shortness of breath. This has been going on for over 10 years and I am only 29. I cannot live like this. Is there any way to schedule a remote call or to deal with you from this side because you really seem to understand alot about this. I really need to sort this out. It is really tough to live a happy life under these circumstances. Please do let me know. Much love, Daniel

I am on two different antacid, antidepressants, blood thinners, and a beta blocker. My gastroenterologist said that the haital hernia was nothing to worry about. He did however found that my esophagus was narrow, he used a balloon to stretch it out. I also struggled to swallow food.

I have pretty much all the symptoms you've mentioned. On top of that I have panic anxiety disorder, I've had that for 20 years. I've been to the emergency room twice within a month for palpitations, I've been to my cardiologist and all the test that were performed didn't find any heart problems. I even wore a heart monitor for two weeks and no issues. I am 99% sure I have a hiatal hernia because I've done some of the suggestions I've found on the Internet and TH-cam, like pushing down under the rib cage, warm water, stand on toes and drop. Symptoms are usually relived almost every time. I have no idea what type of doctor I should see, my cardiologist said all was fine, but I know it's not. I'm located in Florida so unfortunately I'm not able to visit your clinic. Any recommendations on how I should proceed?

Get yourself a juicer and juice up some cabbage or carrot. It will settle things. Plenty about it on youtube. I did cabbage until I found out carrot does the same. Have read drinking these juices have repaired ulcers far quicker than these nasty side effect drugs. Not saying you have an ulcer. I've had gerd in past and it cured it, until I fell back on eating to much sweet stuff and the stomachs worse enermy, alcohol. Getting loads of palpitations, so will be juicing when my carrots arrive tomorrow. I also eat natural organic plain yogurt after meal that calms palpitations down. I seem to get palpitations during exercise, as if I don't sweat quick enough. Doc says everyone is different. In other words, he's useless.

Some Dr. prescribed anti depressants and Beta Blockers. Of course, I never took them, I don't need them. I walk almost 3 km every day and never run out of breath. It's just at night anxiety gives me this Air Hunger feeling, I take my blood pressure and it's perfect. It just feels like an endless loop. I'm not sure if it is Hiatal Hernai since my gastroenterologist did not detect it when he scaned. I assume my case is simply Health Anxiety. Why?
