    My respect for Jimmy went up even higher when he was asked in a recent interview what his typical day is. He mentioned he goes to drum lessons (jazz). He’s all about getting better at his craft. Nothing but respect sir.

      He was learning jazz drums before the Pumpkins... it's what gives the Pumpkins a unique sound over other alternative bands of the same era and informs his style

      It’s great to continually improve and get coaching; even the top tennis players and other sports atheletes have coaches. This is what my surfing coach pointed out. (And boy do I need more surfing coaching lol)

    I just want to thank whoever shot this video that day, in this manner. You made an outstanding clinic video for aspiring drummers to watch and take notes on. This really gives you insight on his ergonomic approach, body movement, posture, etc. It also shows that you can play “loud” without having to beat the shit out the drums.

      100% agree excellent video of a real master of his craft
      Always tasteful always powerful
      Huge inspiration to myself and no doubt anybody who knows what they're looking at -
      Jimmy chamberlin
      Danny carey
      Tim Alexander
      You can't go wrong with these players

  • @adamcoe
    @adamcoe ปีที่แล้ว +90

    there's something really satisfying about a guy with an incredible pocket playing a washy (remote) hat with his right hand but also doing the 8th note hats with his foot. there are very, very few drummers I can think of that have the economy of movement that Chamberlin has, and there is no one on the planet who can play with as much power while seemingly barely moving his arms. a lot of guys spend twice the energy to get half the effect.

    • @finowa
      @finowa ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Right? The way he flicks the crash cymbals yet makes them explode is something I can only aspire to ape to this effect. Also, drumming with a huge wrist watch... I can't even wear long sleeves lol

    • @adamcoe
      @adamcoe 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      i've been watching him for 30 years and I am serious as cancer when I say I am still legitimately amazed every single time. I was at the first show when he rejoined the band in 99 at this small club (the most excellent St Andrew's Hall in Detroit) and it was one of the most insane things I've ever witnessed@@finowa

    • @ChrisPernaDrums
      @ChrisPernaDrums 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Jimmy has always had the 8th notes on the hi hat foot throughout the songs he's recorded. Go back and little to Pumpkins.... everytime you hear hi hat, it's likely his foot, so his right hand is free to color around the kit. Jazz drummer's arpproach to a pure rock drummer's mindset and touch :-)

    • @finowa
      @finowa 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ChrisPernaDrums I think OP was specifically talking about the auxiliary open hats combined with the left foot 8ths, something which might feel counterintuitive or redundant but just works and adds a very subtle texture and bounce to the mix

    Like Stewart Copeland in the Police, Jimmy's drumming was a much larger part of the noise of Smashing Pumpkins than most groups. Both these guys made drumming a real part of the music.

  • @simonharwood8488
    @simonharwood8488 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    First... that might be the most beautiful drum kit I've ever seen.
    Second... the connection between Billy and Jimmy is absolute musical perfection. As I watched this, the guitars and the vocals were fully playing in my brain. They have the perfect musical partnership, jimmy understands exactly what the song needs at every moment. Even when his fills are busy as hell they never get in the way; quite the opposite, just elevating it. Amazing.

    The first time I heard Jimmy was on "Everlasting Gaze" from the album "Machina". I couldn't believe that someone could be so good on the drums and when I looked up who it was, he was already a very respected person in the music world. I follow his career to this day. It's nice to know that "drum doctors" still exist.

    Jimmy’s definitely my favorite 90’s drummer, along w/ Danny Carey from Tool. He has incredible chops and doesn’t get enough credit. Although you have to be a genuine 🎃’s fan to discover his skills in non-radio songs & side projects like the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. I’ve seen the Smashing Pumpkins live 6-7 times. My favorite show was the Arising tour w/ QOTSA, when Jimmy returned. Lollapalooza ‘94 was also great!

    I love that he has that bigger tom before the smaller tom on the rack. Unusual setup but it makes his triplets w floor tom sound so deep without having to move all of the way to the other side with the left hand.

    • @flightgravity7483
      @flightgravity7483 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jimmy said he started using that setup when he joined the band because it made it easier to play the tom groove in I Am One. Otherwise he would have had to use a really awkward sticking pattern.
