Saw this monster play Jellybelly two days ago in Buenos Aires. He's the heart of the Pumpkins, best rock drummer of his generation. I saw them twice with different drummers, great players in their own way, but no one comes near Jimmy. There's no Pumpkin sound without him.
Jimmy was one of those drummers from the 90s that blew my mind, I was a little kid hearing his chops and I remember thinking this was like perfect rock drumming. Even his story and his trials and tribulation’s fascinated me. Years later as an adult I went through similar trials and here I stand out of it, much like Jimmy. We all have a really good story to tell, and Jimmys got some special stories.
You aren't alone my friend. I was gonna comment that he's one of the few drummers that can write like this. It flows so well you can literally hear the entire song without anything but his drums it's so rad!
Yep. Except now I see it in a different light and realize how insanely difficult it is. Before I never even thought once about the drum part. I just knew it was a cool song.
How fortunate Billy was to have found someone to keep up with him, compliment and even augment his excesses. One of those magical relationships. Also, as an avid beginner when their first records came out, I learned SO much from the first few SP records about just how versatile a snare drum can be. He's magnificent.
It does almost seem like fate that those two met. They compliment each other unbelievably well. SP never would’ve been what it became without both of them
I think it's a testament to a great drum part when you can hear the whole song come through in just the drums. Just the subtle control of dynamics on the kick deserves some kind of medal.
If you drum, this groove is HOMEWORK! ANYONE would love to play something like this! BTW, I never heard the song before, went to listen, but I'm biased toward the "just the drummer" version now. Once you nail it this is a very nice workout for the drums. Bit metal, bit jazz, bit funky... good times
There are a lot of all time great drummers, but if i was starting a band and could pick anyone i wanted....from any era....I would pick Jimmy Chamberlin. For the music that vibrates my soul, and made me want to play guitar, i dont believe there is a better drummer than Jimmy Chamberlain. He is one of those few drummers that is irreplaceable. No one plays like him, and no one makes a song, blast off like a rocket, like Jimmy. Plus he is one of the most versatile guys out there. He does it all, is humble, and supremely cool. What else could you want? Thank you Jimmy for never letting the hard times stop you! Its such a blessing you are still with us, rocking hard as ever. Thank you Rick. This will go down as one of my favorite interviews, that you did.
What I love about Rick is that he giggles with the same musical enthusiasm we all do and I certainly did at the end of Jimmy's jam. My favourite music channel, good on you Rick!
Chamberlin is as smooth and cool as the other side of the pillow. His transitions between grooves and fills are so butter smooth and roll with downhill speed.
I envy you. SP is a solid mix of The Cure and Black Sabbath. I won't say that every song is a hit but I'll say they have a pretty good track record and the songs that hit, absolutely HIT.
That's probably the most insane drumming I've ever heard for a song. Absolutely incredible. It's mind boggling to think he could hear someone else make a mistake while performing that.
Billy and Jimmy are one of the best musical duos of any genre and time. Theres probably very few players that could do Billy's riffs the justice that Jimmy gives them. Incredible
Melon collie was one of my favorite albums in high school. So wonderful to see this now, and to see various aspects of the album unpacked on this channel. Really wonderful. Jelly belly is a crazy track!
I always knew Jimmy was an outstanding drummer, but this guy just came on your show and delivered a legit keeper take of one of the band's most difficult songs on the spot! Insane!
Jimmy is a living drum machine😂😂😂 jelly is one of my fav all time songs of all songs, and ode to noone. Hearing Jimmy talk about these songs is so incredible and uplifting in times of instability
This is amazing! I first got into SP back when I was 14 and just entering high school and as a drummer this was the first song that really stuck out to me because of the drums. I'm in awe of FINALLY seeing Jimmy play this song and finally seeing how he played some of those fills after 20 years!! Thank you SO much for this!
Jimmy is one of my idols. He is an amazing drummer. I got to shake his hand after a concert at the Bronco Bowl. His drumming is powerful, primal. I'm so happy to see him looking so well.
What a treat !.. Fantastic, fantastic song .. with world class drumming. There'd be no SP without this man. Thank you both, so much, for this. I'm smiling all the way, what a classic song. Kudos
Jimmy has been my favorite drummer since the very first time I listened to Gish. I hardly ever see his name come up when people talk about truly great drummers. So this is so awesome to see.
It’s one thing to be able to play all those fills back to back; it’s a whole other thing to make it grove throughout. Perfect example of a jazz fusion drummer.
@@thepirhomancer9745 It's definitely the way he plays it, he knows how to get so much texture and tone out of his snare with his array of rimshots and edge snare hits in amongst his single strokes in the middle of the snare.
I saw the Pumpkins in 2018 for the first time. As magical as it was hearing so many of my favorite songs live, I truly can't explain how much of the main highlight was hearing Jimmy play live. It's one of those things that you might take for granted when you hear a record or watch a video. When you hear it in person, it's a new experience.
YEARS ago I went to a drum clinic of his. I left with an even bigger admiration for his playing, but also left with a huge positive impression of Yamaha drums as he talked about his relationship with them over the years.
This is by far my favorite drum video in a long time. I remember being a young teenager listening to that album & falling in love with the drums of that song. Seeing him absolutely killing it was incredible!
Jimmy, Dave Abbruzzese, Dave Grohl, Matt Cameron, Danny Carey, and more. Lots of talent back in the 90’s, one could argue it was the golden age of drumming
Jimmy will always be one of my favorite drummers. His drum parts took Billy’s songs to an entirely new level that most drummers wouldn’t be able to do.
He so relaxed. As a drummer, I'm all over the place trying to play his parts, moving like an animal. I have no idea how he can do that as relaxed as he does.
Got to play on Jimmy’s kit after sneaking in early for soundcheck in Durban, got a pair of sticks, helped unpack Merch and got an armband so ended up selling my ticket too…more money for beers!!! best concert day ever.
That was sooo incredible!!! I picked up my guitar and started jamming along! 🔥🔥🔥🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💯💯💯 one of the greatest of all time and such an inspiration! ✊🏽🙏🏾🙏🏾

So great to see one of rock's best drummers sober and happy.
Fuck yeah it is.
Wurd
Didn't think he would make it out of the 90s.
Hell yeah.
Still making great music and still getting better! How!?
💜💜💜💯
The sense of pride and joy on Jimmy's face at the end is so well earned.
It's incredible that at his age he hasn't lost a step whatsoever

" best rock drummer of his generation" so true!!!
Adore is a pumpkins album despite no Jimmy.
I love Jimmy though. Better than Danny Carey…
Jimmy has some of the cleanest rolls of any drummer.
yep...his rudiments are fantastic.
He’s a monster on those rolls. Anyone know what type of Istanbul China that is to his left? It’s perfect
Facts.
He used to be jazz drummer
He cuts like a knife

Glad you made it through!
I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but I could hear the entire song along with him as he played. Man, what a drummer.
He puts so many accents and fills in to compliment guitar and vocal parts, that you can't help but hear them in your head as he plays. So good!
You aren't alone my friend. I was gonna comment that he's one of the few drummers that can write like this. It flows so well you can literally hear the entire song without anything but his drums it's so rad!

Absolutely! I know it's the other way around, but this song is as if it had been composed on drums first and had all the rest added afterwards.
Yep. Except now I see it in a different light and realize how insanely difficult it is. Before I never even thought once about the drum part. I just knew it was a cool song.
How fortunate Billy was to have found someone to keep up with him, compliment and even augment his excesses. One of those magical relationships. I think their duo matchup of ability is a huge part of what made them famous.

I heard that he's is not good to woman and he's is toxic gender male
SP was great despite and because of Billy, but it was nothing without Jimmy.
Jimmy is under-utilised.
I think it's a testament to a great drum part when you can hear the whole song come through in just the drums. Just the subtle control of dynamics on the kick deserves some kind of medal.
5:16 DOWN IN THE BELLY OF THE BEAST!!!!
Same thought when through my mind. Rare I can make out the song through the drums so clearly. Massive talent.
Dude. I heard the entire song in my head as he played. So good.
I think you deserve a medal for most boring comment
i've never heard the song so i have no idea what the rest of it sounds like
Gold. One of the greatest albums of the 90's.
Is that a drum-specific room? The drums sound incredible, even on a phone!
In my opinion, the greatest
One of the greatest albums EVER. Period
Jimmy is my favorite drummer of all time and so inspiring.
Oh Jimmy, all these years later and you still give me chills.
The first time I heard Jellybelly, I was floored.
I could listen to Mr. Chamberlin talk and play all day long.
It’s awesome how transparent he is on this interview.
That snare drum though! That thing just explodes of the kit. Massive sound. Jimmy rocks
Top 5 snare tones without question.
I doubt he brought his kit to that studio. It's probably Rick's.

What a workout. Awesome. Straight to tape, people. Mad respect. Thanks for the music, Jimmy.
I have always LOVED this song from Mellon Collie.
Jimmy's drumming was a big reason for my obsession with Smashing Pumpkins in the 90s. Great technique and a very reconizable style. Pure class!
What a performance! The orchestration of his drum part in that song...chef's kiss!
One of the best to ever sit behind a kit.
I never really sat down and listened the Smashing Pumpkins. I think it’s time for a deep dive!
