    For people like me who want to option of all day freeway riding, this allows you to ride at 70mph just below 7000 rpm. The 15t works, but will not be my daily driver. 14t is perfect for off road and back road 60mph riding. Stock 40t at the rear.

    i drove the crf 250 rally (it's technically nearly the same bike md44) from southern france to spain and the way back to germany on standard gearing 14/40. in total 1200 miles on highway with constant 65 mph at 100 degf. between 6300 and 6500 rpm. dont make any worries about overheating. full loaded i had to shift back in 5th gear five or six times on steep climbs on the highway to keep up speed. i think you should possibly test the 15 tooth with luggage on highway with some uphill parts... i had the same idea to use a 15 tooth sprocket for highway use but i rejected the idea very quickly on a short weekend trip of 500 miles... (thank god i tested it before my main trip over the french alpes...) the 15 tooth will give you 400 rpm less in 6th gear at 65mph (it's running at 6100 instead of 6500 rpm and you're hanging on the gas more) but in the end i used more fuel... funny ha? from my sight the 15 tooth makes only sense on flat areas... waiting for videos from your trip, greetigs from germany

      Useful comment. I'm doing the run from St.Malo to Andorra and was wondering about swapping out for a 15t. Interestingly on the motorway my Rally (without luggage) will happily cruise along at 65-70 all day.

    Not a CRF-L, but a 300cc "inspired" on the CRF 250 X. It came with a 13 front sprocket. After watching your video the decision is taken, I'll go for a 14 in the front, the idea was in my mind for weeks. Thank you, and congratulations for such an informative post.

    Good data, really honest. I went up a couple of teeth on the back, for more low end grunt and so that 6th could be used more .. and I like it.

    Good Lord there's so many different ways to do the same thing. It almost seems like factory set up is the best & keep it between 65-70 mph 🤷🏻 if you probably do exhaust & tune it then you can run factory rear sprocket & 15 🦷 front because you'll have the extra ponies

    My 2017 all stock with street tires gets exceptional gas mileage. I ride mostly back roads in the 35 to 40 mph range and get average of 85 mpg. A few times I managed low 90s. I try to avoid highways cause because the bike seems to work really hard to keep up with traffic.

    Also I use premium non ethanol gas and a sleek wind breaker cuts down on drag all helps.

    I have also tried a 15 tooth front sprocket, but to be honest it wasnt what I hoped. I had to gear down quite more often than with 14 and fuel milage was seldom any better, if better at all (yes I did recalculate according to changed gearing)
    The only good thing is that the speedo went from showing approx 7 % too much to be totally accurate with the GPS speed.
    Maybe down 1-2 teeth on the rear sprocket would have done the trick?
    I ride mostly backroads and occasionally highways. Gravel roads just accasionally...

    Isn't there a clearance worry putting the 15 tooth sprocket on? I was looking at my bike and thought it would be a disaster for the engine cases if the chain should ever come off. I would like your input on this because I want to put a 43 tooth rear sprocket on the bike. Then having the option of going 13 to 14 tooth or 15 tooth on the front sprocket allowing easy gearing changes. Without changing your chain length. Thanks for any thought on this.

    • @BlakeCKelly
      @BlakeCKelly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the chain comes off then yes it will be an issue, It could damage the engine case. With that being said, I have been riding for about 16 years, owning everything from a 50cc to a 650cc dirt bike, including a crf450r which I still have and i have never had an issue with a chain breaking. Make sure you buy a chain recommended or better than what is recommended for your bike. Now about the chain length, I am not sure if you will have to decrease or increase a link. I will say that with the 15 tooth sprocket on, it is very difficult to hold any speed over 70mph up hills or in strong wind. The best gearing I believe for this bike on the road would be stock gearing, maybe going up one or two in the back.

    I have a 2013 250L with the FMF megabomb header and Q4 muffler and the EJK programmer. I live in southwest Oregon which is very mountainous. I have used the 13 tooth, it does work well for offroad. I did go back to the 14. We ride from home to the hills so there is some pavement pounding. I found the bike was revved out too much at 60 or 70 mph with the 13. I have the stock 40 tooth on the rear. I have heard some guys say it's not good to run the 13 as the circumference is too small so it isn't good for the chain, or something like that. I could be wrong on the exact reason, but the gist is they say don't do it. I like the selection of the 15 tooth since you're going to be doing a lot of high speed road riding. If you're coming over the Sierras they are steep, you will need all the HP you can muster lol. What part of Oregon are you coming to and when is this happening?

    Hello Blake , i want to give you a hint. it is about the time to reach the 60mph mark. double check your speedo sensor location. if it is located in the engine, the bike speed will give false reading on its stock meter when you change the sprockets ratio any of both front and back. so the method to test this is compare it with GPS speed reading. while you are having 14t sprocket, speed up until the GPS reads constant 60mph and mark the reading of bike speedo , then run the speed-time test according to the mark of the bike speedo to give exact time reading. then repeat the same method on 15t sprocket. i would like to know the result accurately , thank you!

    15 is alright. Have you considered the cbr300 crank conversion? I know a guy that did that conversion and he runs a 15t front. I can hit 75 with 13/40 and 72 with a 13/42. After the cbr300 crank was put in I can do 90 with 15/40 85mph with 13/40 and 80 with 13/42.

    On paper it would appear that a 15 tooth front would be the best option especially for Highway riding but in reality you are always going to face certain conditions IE. wind, inclines etc. So although your could always gear down into say 5th gear, what will happen is you will probably find is you would spend too much time in 5th gear because you need a combination of high revs and torque with a small displacement bike to maintain high speeds so the 14 would still be better over all. I noticed you were changing gears before 8000rpm, is there a reason you did not rev it higher at least 9000rpm while doing these tests?

    it's a dual-sport bike which isn't meant to be ridden on-road as you said, didn't even mention offroad, and IDK how you ride with 15 front, 14 is already garbage, 13 is better , 13-42 is the best option, I have bone stock crf250l rally and I am able to be cruising at 75-80mph with 13-42, its revving high, but who cares? it's not that much more vibrations, also smaller front-less load on the engine, obviously. I can do clutch up wheelies 1st 2nd 3rd gear. Are you 80 years old to be cruising on 15-40 offroad, saving gas and RPMs?
    also if your chains snaps say goodbye to your engine case, you just removed the guard

    • @BlakeCKelly
      @BlakeCKelly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your concern, 15 tooth is not something that will be staying on the bike as it is only for another option for a long trip back. The 14 is already back on it with the engine guard. The joy about a dual sport is the dual part. She sees the offroad but my 450r sees the offroad the most. This is considered my on road bike
