- West Virginia found itself in the national title race in 2007 with their dreams of a spot in the national title game being dashed by their arch-rival Pittsburgh. Since that season, the Mountaineers have fought to become national title contenders again and because of those aspirations, it may have run their program into the ground. Now, led by head coach Neal Brown, West Virginia finally looks to be back on an upward trajectory heading into the 2024 season. Can they return to winning double-digit games in a season once again?

It can be tough being a WVU fan but god damn I love the mountaineers.

If I'm not mistaken. The old Big East was the only conference that had a winning record against the SEC . No wonder they killed it.
UCONN made a BCS bowl through autobid playing in that conference. It didn't deserve to be a power conference
Imagine how good the Big East could have been if the kept Virginia Tech, Miami and Boston College and added Penn ST.
@@jacobdye4037 It almost happened right as they were in talks to form the football side of the conference. Penn St. pulled a Texas and said they would only join if they got unequal revenue share. The Big East office told them to stick it where the sun doesn't shine and they left Independence and joined the Big 10. Also Florida St was on the table and set to join at the same time at the founding but rumor was Miami kept them out.
I’m surprised how much information you put this video. WVU has always been right there but has never past the finish line. From the 1988 national championship game loss against Notre Dame. Then just one game away in 2007. Both games we had injured QBs.
Neal Brown needs another good season in 24. He has shown he can get recruits and get transfers. Just needs to continue winning.

Had Pat White not said, "Stewart needs to be our coach," he never would have gotten the position.
Stewart was the greatest mountaineer while also the worst thing for the team. The attrition during his 3 seasons was nightmarish. He set the program back a decade in progress, and 90% of WVU fans have no idea.
Ummm, Dana Holgerson set the program back. He was horrible....
@@carlbrenda6518 incorrect. It became apparent shortly after he took over. He made lots of mistakes and did not do a lot of things he should have done or done differently.
But Stewart did damage that was far worse and far less obvious at the time. Had he been around another 2 years, it would have been apocalyptic.

Rich actually persuaded Prior to not come to WVU. He told him to follow him to Michigan. A lot of fans felt like Rich blew that Pitt game due to trying to build his legacy elsewhere (getting all WVU recruits to go to Michigan). Needless to say we were very pleased to see Prior go to their biggest rivals.

i remember WVU football for 2 players, Pat White and Tavon Austin. Both explosive players. Also those OU WVU games were wild 2 notable ones. That game in 2012 i believe in Morgantown when Austin put up video game numbers (had 300 yards rushing) and that 2018 game.

Slaton was explosive during the mid 2000s. There were also WRs in Stedman Bailey and Kevin White (who didn't pan out in the nfl due to injuries)

I understand this wasnt a Rich Rod video but I'll die on the hill that if Michigan Boosters has gotten behind him and had he staffed a REAL DC, Michigan would have been a force under Rich Rod. If those Shoelace Offenses had even a middle of the pack defense, would have been a whole different story.

Note that Rodriguez actually only had 2 1/2 "big" seasons. Until that, seasons were generally fair then followed by a bowl loss. The Pitt loss was on him because he made the offense increasingly predictable, which is what allowed the Pitt defense to figure out how to stop them. Stewart discussed the problems when he was named interim coach, and he told Magee to open the offense against OU, which became one of the keys to winning.
It may be an unpopular opinion, but I think holgersen set the program back more so than any other coach. People love to point the finger at Neal for underperforming his first 3-4seasons. The talent pool was super dry, there’s a reason why holgersen left. The vast majority of key players that transferred out in Neal’s first few seasons didn’t produce after leaving, but were key contributors at WVU. I think Neal is a good coach, but he needed time after holgersen. He didn’t even have the same talent level as the rest of the Big 12, but he may now.
He was a lazy coach
Last year was the first year the offense looked like what Brown had during his time at Troy. Much of that talent is returning. There is some guys on OL that just left for the NFL, but they’re being replaced by guys who have had significant playing time. If Greene can stay healthy, the offense could be a top 25 offense. The defense lost a few guys, but mostly backups. LB should be a strength. DL could be very good. Just need some new blood in DB to gel. If they can and the team stays relatively healthy, WVU should be in the thick of it.
I have full confidence in the offense next year but man I do not trust that defense yet one bit, hope they prove me wrong

Man West Virginia used to be a upper echelon program, not the top tier or blue blood but they were always a good team hard to beat if at all year after year. Then Rich Rod left

Let this be listened to you if Rich Rod has stayed at West Virginia thanks for the continued to grow and he would have gotten statues built in his honor. Instead he left for the big time and got nothing.
Pat White, Steve Slayton, and a weak big east made dickwadriguez look much better than he was. He proved it when he went to Michigan, a bigger richer school with better recruiting, and completely failed. "Statues" ? lmao

@@wvgolfnut1 And a losing record against the ACC, Big 10, and the PAC. So what ? After Miami and Va Tech left in 2003, along with BC, the Big East was weak while rodriguez had his best seasons.

I believe wvu is on a good path but with nil money not being regulated to college football its going to be tough to win against the much larger schools in the country that have more to pay out thanks in part to the mega boosters they have

Many people don’t know that Bobby Bowden coached in WVU early in his career either.
But AD Pastilong was the one who screwed us up! He couldn’t stand Rodriguez and stayed on his bad side. He went after and after Rod! Coach Rod wanted a few perks and facilities for the program. And the love was lost long before that Pitt game!
Dana Holgerson and Oliver Luck screwed this program by getting us in the BIG 12!! We’ve not had that Mountaineer feeling since! Or any good whatsoever!!
Get us out of than damn Big 12!! These kids coming from all accross the map trying to leave their families behind and come to the Mountains. Their families don’t get a chance to come watch them play. It’s super expensive and those families can’t afford that.
And it’s not like we are getting Texas, Oklahoma and other #1&2 ranked players! More like 3’s and 4’s because they are not leaving that area to come all the way across the US and play!!

He will not prove the doubter's wrong. Will see this year. Easy schedule last year except for PSU. We lose PSU and yes PITT. 5-7 season maybe 6-6 when some B12 team takes us lightly and we upset them.
