How Michigan-Ohio State Became The Greatest Rivalry In Sports

- The rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State is perhaps the greatest in sports. But besides from the game, the rivalry goes back centuries from the events of the Toledo War. The first game was played in 1897 and they went on to play a number of classics such as the Snow Bowl, the Games of the Ten-year War with Woody Hayes & Bo Schembechler to the days of Charles Woodson to Jim Tressel to the present with Ryan Day and Jim Harbaugh.

It’s a rivalry so strong that without the other one life feels empty
That is the essence of it, well stated.
I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life, my dad is an alum of tOSU and now I am a student there as well. A rivalry does not describe the feeling. It’s a hatred that sits for 364 days and on one Saturday at the end of November it’s released. There’s no game that means more to either team or fanbase.
Yeah because that Iron Bowl is intense.
@ToddRobinson13
Yea, "nobody" cares about The Game, yet it is the most watched regular season game almost every year.
Last year wasn't close; Michigan v OSU had nearly 20 million viewers whereas the second most watched game of the regular season was 11 million viewers.
But sure, "Nobody Cares".
Let me put it another way. Which other rivalry to people (to use your words) "care" about more. If "nobody cares" about Michigan v OSU, I'm sure you can easily find another one people care more for.
@@Jon.A.Scholt last year was very close. If Honda McCord doesn't throw that pick, tOSU probably wins that game at the end and wins the Natty.

You know whats great, after looking at the history of the rivalry. The most competitive time of this rivalry was the 70s and 80s. As there were decades of dominance on both sides outside of that period.
I live in the Toledo area. It is still split. Not odd to see Michigan, and OSU fans at the same place here. Some families are even split. That does not happen any where else in Ohio.
Toledo may be in the same state as Columbus buts it’s a lot closer to Ann Arbor distance wise so it makes sense that it would be pretty split

Living in the border counties (Lucas, Fulton, & Williams) is weird like that
The Toledo valley strip was a major blessing in disguise for Michigan, in compensation for us not getting that land the upper peninsula was given to us as sort of a consolation prize, and in the end I think Michigan residents would much rather have that being honest
Once again showing that the entire native population of Ohio is comprised of the worlds single largest percentage of people possessing a double digit IQ.

Harbaugh played QB in the game, guaranteed a win in it, delivered, and now he has coached to 3 wins in a row. His history with the game probably deserved a quick mention.

Bo Schembechler would have loved this game. Power football at it's best. Late int the 4th quarter, 8:06 to go and Michigan runs the ball down the field for a field goal, a 6 point lead, with 58 seconds left and OSU has used all of it's time outs. Then, Michigan's defense does the job once again for a second interception. Therefore, game over with 25 seconds to go and a victory formation for Michigan and a 12-0 record once again... Michigan 30 OSU 24..
You forgot to mention the legendary coach and innovator, Paul Brown, who coached for OSU.
There isnt much to mention in terms of Paul Brown and the rivalry, he was 1-1-1 against Michigan.
@richardclark1127 He won a national championship.

I’m so glad you mentioned the Toledo war… I did a research paper on it in high school years ago. I’m pretty sure there were fatalities on both sides. I grew up in Michigan age 3-24, 45 minutes just south of Ann Arbor. The hatred for Ohio State was strong. I could only find a job out of college in Toledo Ohio after college in 2010. Very well put-together documentary 👏 ! I enjoyed it immensely ! 😊 🏉
A note : between 2001 and 2019, Michigan won two contests - the 2003 game along with the one mentioned in 2011. 🏉
In retrospect, the 2006 matchup is probably more noteworthy in that Schembechler passed away the night before the game. The actual game was, arguably, a made-for-tv hype contest - #1 v #2 which, yes, did provide a close, competitive, entertaining affair. Yet OSU then gets blown out by Florida in the nat'l title game and UM is routed by USC in the Rose Bowl. So ... maybe not a real matchup between the two best teams; more simply, the last two regular season undefeated schools. 🤔 🏈
I grew up during the Ten Year War. That was also the era of the 'Big Two and the Little Eight' - since none of the other Big 10 teams were ever really competitive for the conference title. The winner of The Game won the Big 10 and went to the Rose Bowl and - since there were fewer bowl then and the Big 10 only sent a team to the Rose - the loser went home.
13:07 bo would pass away the week before that game, adding just that extra little element to the it. Despite the hatred between the fans and teams, bo was respected by both sides.
He died on the eve of the game
@@BrewerUMich91 i wasnt sure exactly when he passed in relation to when the game was but i knew it was before this game.

It will never be as intense of a rivalry as the Iron Bowl
Do people realize that long after retirement Woody came to Ann Arbor for a dinner and was lionized. Moral of the story is your best enemy is actually your best friend. I love Michigan but nothing but respect for the Buckeyes. What fun would it be if Indiana was our big rival.
It actually use to be dangerous to visit as an opposing fan. There’s stories of cars with Ohio/Michigan license plates being flipped over and fire bombed after losses lol. This rivalry runs DEEP. Go blue!! 3 in a row!
You're right! When i went to Michigan my dad told me not to go to an away game in Columbus.
As a Detroiter visiting Colombus as a Michigan fan, I definitely realized how serious the rivalry is firsthand, getting into a physical scuffle just for wearing all Michigan apparell during The Game. It's real
I’m pretty sure it still is. I would never go to a game in Columbus. They’re on a different level of sick. When you want to hurt a Michigan fan or damage their property that’s beyond sports. That’s criminal.
@@Adam-vs2inYea, that’s horse shit. I’ve been to every OSU/Mich game in Columbus since ‘93. 999/1000 times Michigan fans are treated with respect and fellowship albeit with a heavy dose of ball breaking. Only time I’ve ever seen physical altercations is after The Game when a Michigan fan or two gets lippy in enemy territory when everybody has spent the majority of the day drinking. Not smart.
You’ve obviously never been to a game here and it shows through your ignorance. Guarantee if you walked up to any tailgate and said you’re from bum fuck whatever Auburn Hills and wanted a recommendation on a good place to eat and get a beer before the game you’d have a brat in one hand and a beer in the other before your sentence was finished and have already been insisted upon joining the party with them. Seen it a million times. Two of my best boys are Michigan fans, we all grew up ten minutes from the stadium. Nobody ever does anything but talk some shit in good fun. It’s like you think nobody here has ever seen a Michigan fan before. It’s a big city. There’s thousands of them here. This is Columbus not Baton Rouge or Gaynsville.

I dont recognize the college fb I grew up with, the second or third weekend kicked off the season with UM/ND with some great games.
Tressell didn't "promise" to beat Michigan in his speech at the basketball game. He hedged his bets. He said that people would "be proud" of their team next year in Ann Arbor. Not the same thing. On the other hand, Jim Harbaugh flat out guaranteed a victory over OSU in Columbus in 1986 the week before the game and made good on his guarantee.

His own players (more than two dozen separate accounts from former players) and an opposing player on national television. Man was a legendary coach but my lord he had some incredibly deep seeded hate in him to the point of becoming physically violent with people.
@Hardtimesflushthechumpsdude the sheer number of times he would assault his own players as well as his explosive and violent behavior towards people off the field went way over the line to chalk it up to a generational difference. He probably suffered from a psychological disorder as no other coach at the time had this consistent pattern of violent behavior towards his players and visible lack of impulse control than Woody.
