From BCS Contenders to BOTTOM of the ACC... (The Fall of Boston College Football)

- At one point during the 2007 season Boston College was sitting at number 2 in the BCS polls and looked like the new kids on the block led by quarterback Matt Ryan. It seemed like it was the coming out party for a program that had been on the rise since a gambling scandal in the 90s. A little over a year later, a rash decision by their then athletic director would lead to the downfall of Boston College Football. From back-to-back ACC title game participants to the bottom of the ACC this is the fall of Boston College Football.

EA Sports College Football is only days away. Time to revive this program, boys!
One of the teams I was deciding between for my first dynasty this video just confirmed it
Lived 20 minutes from the BC campus, they are at best a 7 win team. Most of the time when I go to alumni stadium it is a late arriving early exit crowd.
Jesus, you’d think they were 2-10 every year. They’ve been the pinnacle of Mediocre since 2007 but in no way are they a gutter program. They went 7-6 last year beating a Top 25 team in their bowl. You would literally think BC averages 1-2 wins per year.. They are consistently mediocre, not great but not bad. Bill O’Brien should get them back to being a consistent Top 25 program now that they spend more than most football programs in the ACC.
As a BC fan I’m ready to be hurt by this video
I have always had a fondness for Boston College so it's been sad to see them stay at .500 ball for so long
You know BC has Bill O’Brien as their head coach now. BC has win 6 games consistently on auto pilot with mediocre head coaches. Imagine what they’ll do with top notch NFL coaches on their staff. They have 3 former NFL head coaches on their staff this year, Bill O’Brien, Doug Marrone and Rob Chudzinski. The coaching staff is finally legitimate so never underestimate a team with great coaching.
@@Chris-tq1jythe problem is NIL and the fact that many kids do not want to go to a school in Massachusetts. California,Florida,or the deep South are a better option if the player wants to go to the NFL. Maybe Notre Dame ir Michigan also
@@STMARTIN009 If kids want to play in warmer weather, then maybe the NFL isn't for them. In the NFL you play in all of the conditions. Finances are not a problem, they paid Bill O'Brien to come to BC and gave him the resources to be successful.
If the ACC dissolves, I still want BC in the Power conference and not dropped to G5.
They belong in the g5 terrible recruiting for a p5 school
@@user-nj4qg4gx7hit's hard to recruit with such high academic standards and what kid wants to go to BC when California or Florida wants a recruit badly
@@STMARTIN009 lol “high academic standards” the funny thing is basically all schools use the same general curriculum for said major it’s all a illusion. Just an excuse for trash bc
@@user-nj4qg4gx7h Explain our hockey titles then?
@@notoriouseagle1074 no one cares about hockey. It’s not even remotely the same thing lol. Plus Boston is full of talented hockey players. Football not so much if you think some Texas football stud is choosing bc you are beyond delusional
While they haven’t been complete trash, they have been consistently mediocre, so essentially irrelevant. Def have high hope BOB can get them back to 9-10 wins a season, if not more.
5:25 Ironic considering T O'B never won more than 9 games during his NC State tenure
As a Virginia Tech, I will always despise the Eagles. But I do feel bad for them. I want the Big East or an Eastern Athletic Conference of some kind back.
I grew up in New Jersey with the Big East. I miss it so much
BC is so bad that we all accidentally call them the “Golden Eagles” from time to time lol.
(Unless you were referring to their cheerleaders, in which case I’m sorry for whatever happened)
As a BC fan I bad for Virginia Tech fans, as VT has also underachieved for the past decade
How is BC so bad?
They are the Eagles, not the "Golden Eagles", that's Southern Miss. And your mascot is a turkey lmao
Not picking Steve Logan to replace Coach Jags was the biggest mistake in BC history. As I stated before, Steve Logan was the brains behind BC’s stellar offense in 2007 and helped develop Chris Crane into a decent QB in 2008. Coach Jags was fired in pre season by the Buccaneers because his strategy was very vanilla, he was nothing without Logan. There’s a reason Jags was never offered to be a head coach in college football again.
You're so right on that. 👏👏👏
THIS
Tom O’Brien never achieved the same success at NC State that he did at Boston College. So that dig he made at BC bit him in the ass. Tom O’Brien’s son is on the BC coaching staff this year.
As a Wake Forest fan being the giver of a heartbreak instead of receiving the heartbreak is great.
You have to be a certain age to even remember a time where BC used to not only be somewhat good but send a lot of good players to the pros almost every season for a little bit.
The Big East in the late 90s and Early 2000s was pretty deep. Outside of them Pitt, WVU, and Syracuse were pretty good programs that had a bunch of players become NFL starters. Of course you also had Miami and VT at their peak
Boston College is ranked #8 in CFB as far as Highest cap hit per college in the NFL. BC players in the NFL rank higher than Ohio State and Michigan. I bet that’s a surprise fact you didn’t know and that’s with Matt Ryan no longer in the NFL.
@@Chris-tq1jy no i didn’t know that but from 1999 to 2009 they had 8 first round draft picks, since then they have only had 5. They had 4 first round draft picks from 1999-2003. That tells you the drop off they had after the 2000s. Interesting enough since 2009 most of those draft picks have been in the past few years so i am surprised they weren’t better. I guess you can blame coaching on that since they had a run of good coaches in the 90s and 2000s
@@Chris-tq1jythe current problem is schools have to pay top recruits and BC may not be willing to pay the price. Let's also not forget that BC much like Notre Dame has high academic standards.
@@STMARTIN009 Academic standards are overrated, I know a few players that went to the school were just average students. Maybe the FSU players are illiterate idk. Playing in the Northeast preps you to play in all conditions, rather than playing for a warm southern school. If the cold conditions sway a recruit away from BC, then maybe the NFL isn't for them. In the NFL you play in all of the conditions.
They just beat me in my first bowl game ever
God getting recommended this was a sting to the heart as a Bostonian…but it’s true. They have more tradition and history than anyone will give them credit for, and part of that is how they’ve gone from a regular top 25 school to 6-7 every year. It’s a shame, I think the program deserves better.
As a BC fan, I’m excited for what Bill O’Brien can do. Thomas Castellanos is a playmaker at QB. If BOB can control the gunslinger a bit, TC will be good. We are set at RB with Robo and Ward. This year will be tough with the schedule, but I do think BC is on the way up.
Firing Jagz wasn't the worst decision. His recruits, while talented, often left the program without a year or two. Hiring Spaz over Steve Logan, in my opinion, sealed this program's fate.
Boston College always seems to rise to the top for a couple of years, then fall back to the bottom for a decade plus
The program has been falling due to the fact of NIL deals and the fact that not many top recruits want to go to Boston College. The academic standards are too high.
Wow if coach jag stayed BC would probably be looked as a completely different program
The program was doing extremely well even though they had only recently joined the ACC. Though I don't know how strong his recruiting was. Though he seemingly had a strong coaching staff in place in his first two years
Is that why Coach Jags was never a head coach again? Because he was just so great??
@@Chris-tq1jyHow easily people forget he inherited a good team and tried to leave the program at the peak of its success to boost his chances at an NFL job. Failed miserably.
Do you make basketball videos too? I’d be interested in seeing a breakdown of how BC basketball fell apart in the post Al Skinner era too. I didn’t cherish those years enough when the Eagles were a fringe Top 25 team in both sports. 😭
You need to upgrade your microphone or do more practicing on your voiceover because there were several times in the vid where i couldn't understand what you were saying.
It’s hilarious how both Umass and BC just completely imploded their major sports programs
BC still has one of the best hockey teams in the country.
You should look at SIU-Carbondale
Too much focus around the professional teams in Boston. Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox have all had incredible runs over the course of the last 25 years or so. BC lacks identity with the city tbh. On top of the fact that it’s a somewhat smaller Catholic school compared to most FBS programs.
I’ll admit. I routinely forget Boston College even exists despite being a Power program.
I hope Bill O’Brien turns around BC
Huh???? I thought you start at the end of the 1984 season (the end of the Flutie Years)
As a life long BC fan. Thanks for this. Now I’m sad again lol
If you haven’t done one, you should do Illinois.
Do the fall of the Florida gators and South Carolina gamecocks
Coach Jags was the most overrated coach in history. Steve Logan was the mastermind behind Jags success.
Would like to see a fall of Texas Tech
Coach Obrian took the job where? Comment engagement so I can be lazy 😂 4:55
Oof NC State…

Just subbed
What is a Boston College? I only know of SEC teams.
BC will never be a true BCS contender. They can't win when it counts.
why are you drawing out the last word of every single sentence. makes it unwatchable
As a WVU alum, no other fanbase was as arrogant for no reason in the Big East than BC. They act like Notre Dame fans, but without the national championships, Heismans, All-Americans, etc.
I was always puzzled by this mindset.
Maybe its a Northeast thing? Lol
Huh? As a BC guy, the WVU fans were always the trashiest fanbase. WVU is basically a trailer park.
Even when Matt Ryan was their top QB their team was not at the top 😂.
Matt Ryan & Joe Flacco were not marketed heavy until middle of their last seasons either. Brian Brohm was thought to be QB # 1 for 2 yrs until their senior seasons because of how U of L’s program had risen under Petrino until his departure into the Vick situation.
Boston College has never been a factor.
Jesus Loves You
BC was only number 2 in 2007 because that was the craziest year in college football. That team would have never broke into the top 10 any other year. West Virginia was also number 2 that year 😂.
They were number 2 in 2007 so get over it.
@@Chris-tq1jy they suck get over it
So was Cal
@@fakereality96 that was the same year Appalachia St beat Michigan and the worst Stanford team ever beat number one USC two weeks later. Insane year for college football.
Boston College….exists 🫠😨
They always play hard but are just always mediocre. Every season it’s 7-5. Like chalk. I wouldn’t call them complete bottom feeders (cough wake forest). But yeah expectations have been high on occasions only for them to choke away their chance at an FBS big bowl game. It’s been frustrating at times 🫠😥
I was at that Syracuse game in 2005. It was a disaster. We LED at halftime albeit close but we just completely fell apart in the 2nd half. I also went to a 2007 game which we won but again it felt like a team on Deja Vu. Glimpses of excellence only to find a way to blow it.
Not fun being a BC fan 😪😓
