Almost guarantee it's valve seals!!the EX'S are one of the most balanced quads EVER I'm 6'4 and have no problems doing one handed wheelies down the whole street!!..they're a really reliable quad as well bro!!

every 400ex i’ve owned or been around is very cold natured but that can be fixed! these machines along with many others were jetted very lean from the factory to pass emissions. if you bump the pilot jet up to a 42 it will start up 100x better.

I think your on the right path with valve seals judging by compression and the plug didn't appear to be oil soaked. At first I figured it was worn piston and rings and scored cylinder due to the K&N filter (not a good filter for small particulates) and it was not serviced. Glad to see your diving in deeper and attempting to correct these issues! You get 5 squirts 💥💥💥💥💥 of WD-40 for the effort alone!

Clean carb, adjust valves, change oil, maybe do rings
It needs valve guides and valve stem seals...it's classis air cooled issues

I’ve seen even with a worn oil ring it will still show good compression.

LOL i was going to say at one point have to hold that throttle in all the way when doing that compression test. 150psi is good! Adjust the valves and see where that gets ya. Great video keep up the hard work :)

Well like i said in the first video when you picked up that quad. Valve seals check them before rings. I bet it is Valve seals:) Nice video👍

Word of advice! also put some hard silicone on the plug side of that boot and on the coil side of the plug wire it will make it water tight to keep it running in the wet/water,if the coil gets wet it will shut off till it dry's out, I had a problem with my 01. Trx 300ex coil getting wet and shutting the bike off. Now I can put it in 3 foot of water with no problem, other than air
I had two xr400s same motor as the four wheelers awesome motor damn near indestructible. I think it would be a lot easier for you starting it if you just didn't touch the gas at all because they flood really easy. Mine always started right up without touching the gas
Get some beefy tires, oil change, check valves, and rings, KEEP THIS!!!

He short shifts cuz he is scared of the power band on 2 strokes, he rev bombs the 4 stroke cuz it has no power band, and he is used to that, not sure where he learned how to work on bikes but .. his skill needs work
Jason Petrich I remember when he got that 93’ kx125 and it was mint asf, just needed everything flushers because it sat for 6 years, when he started it up it was literally running perfect, best two stroke I’ve ever heard on his channel tbh, and what does he say “she’s running lean, might need to fix that” that’s why his shit always blows up, like wtf it was running perfect

You should put the oem 400ex spark plug wire it is built differently and it won’t get close the the exhaust.
Putting on Air Shrouds and Heat wrapping your exhaust helps with 400ex overheating problem

I picked up an 87 honda 350d smoked like a 2 stroker but after riding it everyday for a solid 6months didn't do any work and now she doesn't smoke at all sometimes all it needs is to be rode
i like that it wobbles really bad on the road riding, ill take it.

For it not starting try taking the gas cap off, sometimes the vacum builds in the tank
I had the same thing happen on my 97 300ex the spark plug cable got pushed out by a stick i thought I was out of gas also but after I had another quad get me gas he noticed it wasn’t connected and ran fine ever since

Excess oil is being burned in the cylinder bc of worn rings(oil & or compression).
A cylinder caked with oil could make more compression than normal btw...
i'd check over the exhaust too dude , some smoke coming frum before the end can , unless its drainage

Could still be rings, if oil is leaking past the oil rings it can seem like it has good power and compression, if your gonna open the engine up might as well get a fresh top end they are decently cheap
Try to put rec 90 at the pump if you have one keeps carb clean I have a 01 and it keeps it running smooth
I have a 400ex four wheeler and the best way to start a 99 or newer 400ex four wheeler is to pick it up and let some of the old fuel out not all of it just some, and then put amsoil in it and run none oxy fuel in it
400ex is such a chadded quad
Every few rides your suppose to change the oil drain some of the old gas out, change spark plugs and Bearings, Starter, Put good oil in it, Transmission fluid, new Oil filter new air filter, check the clutch make sure clutch and Shifter works and brakes, check the chain, put good gas in it not the cheap gas use 91 octane gas for any dirtbike or atv it'll run better and use amsoil oil and if you don't clean the carb it'll start bringing metal flakes into the motor and ruining the motor period

You should look into suzuki lt230 quadsport if you put a dg exchaust on it it sounds so good
Those are pretty slow and have absolute dog shit for suspension
You should look for a big red 250 or a 85,86 ATC 250r, also use that back brake as you’ll be able to wheelie down the road instead of just popping the front end up

I have a honda 300ex. Started smoking like that so I slapped some rings and a piston in and it stopped.
If you need help with the valve seals, I offer up my help for free. I am guessing you can do it no problem. BTW, when you do compression test, ideally you should be at Wide Open Throttle! 150 is totally fine. You might have piston rings that are not staggered. If I had to guess, I would say valve seals.

I have an 05 400ex. You can put a big bore kit in these for less that 800.00. Mine is so much faster now that I installed all these parts. SCARY FAST!!!

Cool videos! I recently bought a 400ex and rebuilt the top end but I can’t seem to time it correct, I have it on tdc but cam sprocket won’t align, I can skip a tooth either way but once it has tension timing marks don’t align any ideas? Thank you
Your timing chain is probably stretched. Also make sure woodruff key is not sheered off in the flywheel.
I think its the valve seals. My ltz 250 did the same thing when I got it but I threw in new rings and it still smoked. I got the seals and that fixed it. So try valve seals.

With the throttle open you should have like 220 psi compression.
If ever you can just keep one ....isay that 400ex is the most versatile toy you have 🤘🤘🤘 + those things are the best wheelie bike ever ...i could wheelie mine one the road for ever 😁

on my 400ex i always keep it on reserve because when its on normal it always bogges down
hey brother i had a 2000 400ex and it smoked like that. come to find out it needed a topend change
Am I right that the 400ex is the same motor as the XR400?
I have 2 400ex on is a race one with a 416 12:1 compression ration and the other is stock im guessing that bike needs a piston and and cylinder bc I had a 440 that did that destroyed the cylinder if u have any questions feel free to ask I know my way around 400s pretty well
Depending on how bad the rings are it probably scored the cylinder and your going to need a new cylinder and rings

I have 2003 trx 400ex and it’s licking gas for the carburetor I clean the carburetor still licking tho I don’t know that problem can everyone help me
Pump the gas a few times and give it gas when starting mine starts up right away cold
I would get that thumb throttle off and fit a twist throttle I feel a whole lot more comfortable with twist throttle
The reason atvs don't have them is because when you're cornering hard you're almost completely hanging off the side of the bike so keeping your wrist twisted is harder. It's also because atvs front ends are way heavier so when you hit a big bump you absorb most of it through the handle bar

You should do a 3 wheeler. Maybe a yamaha Tri-Z 250 or a tecate or a 250R.

If it was the valve seals it would allow oil to drip on the piston while sitting and once started it would burn off and go away. It could be a stuck ring or just blow by. Honda's will smoke forever before they need a rebuild.
My 400ex is absolutely quick and loud
