    Having owned both, I could have told you. If a z loses to an ex. There's definitely something wrong with the z.

      top speed on a stock 400ex is 73 mph and it lost to the tecate 4 250 which top speed on it he did was 68. the 400ex is not running right if it’s losing to z400

    I think your z400 needs a new cdi box, shouldn't hit the limiter that quick.

      To each his own. The LTZ has reverse. Liquid cooled. I had both bikes and the LTZ was a far better machine. But that’s just my opinion.

    Iv had both the 400EX and a 400 LTZ the 400EX going up one sprocket tooth in the front will smoke an LTZ 400 the 400 LTZ is geard just a little taller than the 400EX from the factory other than that if they were both geared the same the 400EX has more horsepower and would win every time. You are wrong the LTZ is geared for higher speed you're not calculating or dividing your front sprocket with the rear sprocket the gear ratio on the 400EX is 2.85 the gear ratio on a 400 LTZ is 2.40 so the gear ratio on the LTZ is going to be faster just because of the gear combination if you were to switch them the 400EX would be the faster one. The 400 LTZ would not stand a chance against the raptor 660r no way in hell

      U guys need to research some dynos of these bikes, the 400ex is an old school air cooled motor, vs the newer tech liquid cooled zuk 400.the ltz makes about 5-6hp more than a 400ex. Everyone knows this in the quad community. The ltz will win a drag race against a 400ex every time all else being equal and stock. Both are great bikes, the 400ex is more trail friendly and the ltz is a lil more track ready. Again this has been decided and proven like a decade ago. Anyone that still thinks a 400ex is a faster quad in any form just doesn't know, is ignorant or just a brand whore that can't except the facts lol

    2vintage what’s the gearing on the z400 it sounds like it’s geared low is why it’s hitting the rev limiter so fast and the Kawasaki kfx400 is the same quad as the z400 and dvx400

    Ive owned a few 400ex and now own a kfx400 and the kfx is definitely faster but the 400 was more reliable.

    Figured the z would win. When you mod it, it's a beast! 14/40 is stock for the ltz 400. Definitely should try replacing the cdi box! Shouldn't be hitting the rev limiter that quick. I have a dynatek cdi on mines. Cool video

    i understand small tires for moto or flat track but even then i always ran 23 in in the front n 22 in in the back but i did alot of woods riding and never do a garage tour you dont want everyone knowing what you have nd trying to steal your shit by taking inventory of what ya have

    The rev limiter really makes it not reach full rev which i think would have changed the race a lot

    Change around your gear ratio on the ltz400, it should help with hitting the rev limiter too early.

    There’s is a bigger difference than just being air cooled. Ltz is stock 11:1 compression and ex is stock 9:1:1 if I remember correctly.

    To be honest if check the specs on the sprockets on the ltz . The previous owner may have changed them for the type of riding he was doing because it tops out way too quick. My brother had one and his wasn't like that at all. It stretched out more like the 400ex.

    Wearing shorts in the rain while riding. I live on Washington state so I can relate. Never seen someone only grab the clutch when your ready to shift. I always keep my two fingers on.

    personally, i like air cooled more than liquid cooled, its just less things to worry about, + i've never had a problem with over heating on a air cooled. And i've owned many different air cooled bikes and trikes.

    Having owned 3 ltz400s over the past 16 years; I can assure you that ltz400 is not running the stock gearing at all, maybe a 13T front sprocket probably, cause a stock 14T z400 is no gonna hit that rev limiter that fast! Also, you were racing all the way to 5th gear? Cause that looked like 4th gear 🤔🤔

    I have a 07 carb and 09 fuel injection z 400 and mine don’t hit rev limit that fast they must have changed the cogs and lowered the speed u need the plug and play over ride

    Back in January I bought a brand new Foreman. My wife wanted to learn how to ride so I taught her how to ride on the foreman since it was a foot shift model. I sold my 450R Honda last week and shopping for something else. The slow trail riding we do as you know the 450 isn't really cut out for that we average around 20-25 mph at the most. I love sport bikes and was going to get another one that was better suited for trails I heard both of these are. Behind the being a little bit better on the trails? I'm not worried about topping speed as you can tell I am a Honda guy but that really doesn't make my decision which one would you buy if you're just doing slow trail riding? I don't want another utility since I got one of those already here for when I want to ride it. And it seems like the air-cooled motor would be easier to work on then a liquid cold any input you have is appreciate it

    I had a 400ex with K&n Air filter and a slip on fmf pipe and it felt to me like the kfx400 i had that was stock was faster. couldnt race them side by side but now ill know

    Of course the Suzuki is faster its LQ cooled. Both machines need a aftermarket rev limiter box makes such a big difference. After riding my RM 125 my buddy wanted me to try is 400EX. I could barely ride it just kept hitting the rev limiter.
    He eventually got exhaust jet kit and aftermarket rev box omg what a difference. I actually enjoyed riding it after that totally different machine.

    Z400 kicks Honda ass everytime on equal playing field. The z400 is the ultimate light quad...only 3lbs less than ex but a stock z is crazy fast/geared for it's size. The ex is mehhhh....just normal mainstream stuff. In my experience of 50 plus years, it's the best bang for the buck ANY YEAR on quads.

      Your cdi controls the rpm setting and if it's bad then it'll limit early

    LTZ stock is a Lot faster then my 2006 400ex. My neighbor has a LTZ and it feels like it has 50cc more then my 400ex no Way the Honda wins. Even you bike with its Mods win hang with LTZ

    Wow the ltz obviously has issues with rev limiter cutting in early and it STILL reels in the 400ex lol. And the 400ex is geared taller so should have beat it in top speed but still couldnt lol. 400ex's are great with a few bolt ons to uncork them, great all around quad. The ltz is just a generation of development ahead of the ex.

    Why are you missing so many parts on that Suzuki 400 LTZ should have a key and reverse not a switch to kill it also what upgrades were done to it you sure it hasn't been bored out making it a 416 I know that pipe that's on there is not stock is it just a muffler or is it the whole exhaust these things make difference how fast it runs

    Yeah 400 ex are just as fast until the top end and the Ltd. Walks the dog on the ex, the kfx 400 would hang right with the Ltz400, I thought when the kfx450 come out it would have been super fast on top end and it wasn't the kfx400 is just as fast on top end as the kfx 450

    A 400ex with sim engine work an pipe will keep up with a stock z 400 an maybe beet it but 440 big bore will deff beat a stock z 400 but a z 400 with lil engine work will beat a strong running 400 ex even with a big bore

      the 400ex top speed is better and it hits top speed faster. that 400ex is old and has more miles on it

      @@no-nh8ol that’s incorrect, I’ve had multiple of both quads in the time I’ve flipped them. The ltz hits a much higher top speed with stock to stock gearing, and it accelerates faster. Oh, and it handles much better. It’s overall a much better quad. I mean it is an air cooled sohc vs a dohc liquid cooled…not even a comparison.

      @@dilloncollins7521 honda handles way better no doubt. and ive done top speed on 2 different 400ex the 2003 one hit 69 and the 2007 one hit 73 cause it was tuned and had a slip on and has other things done to it. the z400 top speed was 67 and handles horrible in the dirt

    It's hard to predict when it's going to hit the rev limiter? It's all by sound. You should know that quad by sound the first time you hit the rev limiter

    Ltz400 should be faster and its better than the Honda because it has reverse. Both are great for wheelies but the ltz400 shifts like butter and its very reliable. That ltz400 looks like it seen better days.

    Try a different cdi on the Suzuki should help it rev higher

    I have a 07 ex and a 06 ltz and tell yall what the ex is way more fun and handles way better. The z is faster top speed but my ex is way faster off the line

    Dude that's not you rev limiter that's sounds to me like a carb issue I worked on one of these before and it sounded nothing like that yours sounds pretty fuckin rough

    I had a yellow 04 z and a 99ex. Best thing is the reverse on the z and bigger seat. Ex wheelies better. Z is hard to wheelie with low gearing
